About This Class

In this class you will learn how to create simple and more complex patterns in Affinity Designer. At the end of the class I share how I use a template to show my patterns on Instagram. I've included three Instagram templates for you to use as well. This class is great for anyone that is new to Affinity Designer or someone that already knows the basics.

1. Introduction To Pattern Design In Affinity Designer: Hi. This is Lindsay from East Coast Charm. In this class, we're going to go over how to create patterns and infinity designer affinity Designer is a great alternative to Adobe Illustrator and is much cheaper. We're gonna create a basic polka dot pattern as well as a slightly more complex floral pattern. How dio set up the repeating tile and also have to upload your pattern. So places like spoon flour and society six is well as Instagram. If you have any questions at all during your class, make sure to ask in the community section and I will be happy to let you know the answers. 2. Simple Pattern: we're going to start off with making a simple poke it out of pattern Click file. New Next the document type. Select either print or Web, depending on what you want. The final pattern for change the unit two pixels And then I'm going to change the dimensions to 500 pixels by 500 pixels and click OK for this pattern. I would like to use a grid click view show grid and then on the left toolbar. Select your circle or clique em on your keyboard. I'm going to start this corner and drag the circle down to this corner and click select. Make sure that the circle is perfectly round. To change the color, go to your right toolbar. Make sure that the color window is selected. An affinity designer, you can drag around the circle to find the color that you would like for that in the triangle, he can drag it around more to make it lighter or brighter or darker. For this one, I'm going to select a great color. You can also double click on this circle in order to put in numbers for RGB or see him like a also the hex code. Once you're happy, click close and I do not want a stroke on the circle. So select the stroke outline and click the circle what they line through it now to make the circle for the corner, click on the black arrow on the Left toolbar or Click V on your keyboard. It's like the circle Click Command and dragged your circle. Once it's already copied, you can release the old, drag it up to your corner and tell. The green and red are both lined up with the edge of your document if you're not comfortable with using the awl, but you can also click Command C and Command V, and that way you're circles. Copy. So continue with putting circles in the corner until all four corners have a circle. So when you're pattern comes together, these four circles in the corner combined to make one circle, so all four of these need to be the same color. I like every other road to have a different color, so I'm going to make this middle circle light blue. So as of right now, your background is transparent. I would like to make sure that my background is white. So when a select the rectangle tool or am on your keyboard, try it from one corner to the other. Change the color toe white right click on the square to arrange and then move to the back. Now you can click file Save as, but I'm going to save this on my desktop. The first line. A test Your pattern, an affinity designer is to create a new document. The summer made it larger than the last ones of 1500 pixels by 1500 pixels. Click File Place. Select your pattern. I move it to the top left corner and either using command C Command V two copier pattern or all on a keyboard. Lying up the second tile and everything is looking like it is lining up correctly to duplicate in the process. Had command J on your keyboard, select all three tiles and duplicate. Make sure it lines up correctly and hit Command J again, and you have a pattern that is lining up perfectly. It's another tip with affinity designer, and this is one thing I think is really, really neat about this program. If you select your first, I'll double click. It's going to open up, and you could see that it was the embedded file. So you're not happy with the color blue? Anyone green and set See moving around until you find the correct color that you like and go back to your new document and you will see that all of the dots have changed colors and you can go and say you want to change the gray. Select all four of these. We'll make it slightly darker. Go back to your document and you can see that the color has changed again. So the second way to test your pattern an affinity designer is Teoh. Export the document this time save it as a gift. Really, new documents. So left a circle or square. Really any shape that you would like make it any size that you would like and so let the filler radiant tool and in the tight, select bit map. Select your pattern and it will place it into you're squares or cold, and you can make your pattern smaller. You could move it around just a good way to test to make sure that everything is lining up correctly. So, yeah, there's your second way of testing your pattern of affinity. Designer 3. Pattern 2: our second pattern is going to be slightly more complex than the last. Hey, the new document. I changed my two pixels and then change the document size to your 500 pixels by 500 pixels . The first thing that I like to dio iss to make the background. So select your rectangle tool or am on the keyboard and drag it over the art board. So elect the color you would like for this one. I'm going to dio a dark blue and then with the background, I like toe lock my name. So when I'm moving motifs around, I don't accidentally select back from as well. So if you go to the right hand side, make sure the layers palate is selective and then click on the lock button and you will see that that is locked. To use your selection tool or V on your keyboard, you'll see that you can no longer select the back room, so I'm gonna make a flower. He's select the circle tool dragon until you're happy and then change the color. An affinity designer with your selection tool, this very top circle will allow you to rotate your object. Concil ect, the corners, the change, the shape, the sides to change the Web and a top or bottom to change the height. Using the command C Command V option to copy and paste or all on the keyboard, make a second pedal and then rotate, and I'm going to use Command J to duplicate this process. I don't like to have everything perfect on my flower, so I just wanted to move some of the pedals around. And when you're happy, use the circle tool again and make the center of your flower, and I'm going to change it to a yellow orange color. And then I'm going to create some smaller circles in the center and change them. It's like a gray, and when you are done using the selection tool or the on your keyboard, select everything and a group your motif so either command G in your keyboard or right click. I'm group Mr. When you click on it, you can move it around for our second motif. I'm going to make another flower. If you go to the left hand toolbar, you will see a triangle or a different shape. If you click on it, it brings a drop down of several different shapes. And I'm going to use the cloud tool. Click and drag changed to a color that you like and I'm going Teoh, copy this Shake So command, see him and be or all on your keyboard. I am going to shrink the size, rotated, mistreated a little bit more and then change the color. And you can do this as many times as you like. If you wanted to dio 1/3 1 once again, I want to be the and, um, going to make the center the same color as the one before. And you could do that by selecting. May I drop her and dragging it? And what the Sandra in a second Moti selected Click on that yellow. I'm just gonna make some more of the circles on century. I did not like the one, so I clicked it on the right and don't so you can come over here And with all of the central one selected, you could do it individually by using the selection tool and shift and clicking at each individual one or in the right side. You can select one at the top or bottom and holding shift clipped the bottom one that you want. I do not want to strip Someone tried to strip off, and then I'm going to use eyedropper tool to select this gray. I can click on it, and you can move things around until you're happy. If you would like to take a step back, if you move something around that you didn't intend to move around, you can hit Command Z on keyboard. And I just noticed that it looks like these three have a stroke on that someone from the strip off and I would like to make some leaves, so I'm going to use the tear tool, and I'm going to change the color green. Can the the enter key board or click the selection tool at the top left and I years command on the left bracket on? I click until it moves it to the position that I would like. I'm going to make a 2nd 1 and then rotate. I want to change the color on the 2nd 1 slightly, and then I'm going to select everything, and the group it together could also use the heart tool for a leave or a flower. So you have your heart. He's in command C command be or all on her keyboard. Thank you. Second heart and then use command J to duplicate things around until you're happy. And you can use the heart tool again to make you leave. Another way to move it is too selective on the right side and visit below where you would like it. You could make an additional leave if you would bite and select everything about my teeth and put together okay. With three NTV's, we're going to make the pattern. So I'm going to move this off of the art board slightly. And the rule with patterns of anything that overlaps the sides, needs Teoh reflect back on the other side. So for this one, with its elected I'm going Teoh copy and paste using Command Z Command be And then in your transformed palette on the right side, the X access I am going to put a plus sign and my art board is 500 pixels. Someone a Dio plus 500 enter and you will see that it has copied to the other side of the art board. I'm going to do the same thing for this blue and moved it and it iss going off of the top edge. So in the transform palate after I copy in pace and won't go to the why access and I'm going to add 500 and you will say that it has copied onto the bottom. I'm not 100% happy with that. So I would just like both and I'm going to move it over. It's important to look both at the same time so that it moves together so that the pattern tiles on the proper way. So the purple ones left it. I'm just going Teoh, rotate it, actually make it slightly larger and keep it simple. I'm just gonna make a polka dot of background. So select the circle tool. I was going do shift, and I'm going to make the polka dots. I don't like the way I think the lights a little too great someone to bring it him slightly toe a gray white with the selection tool and all. I'm just going Teoh copy some built up around until I, um happy move them around to make sure that you overlap some of these copy and move to the other side of the heart board. - And it is important to know if you have something over laughing at the bottom and you need to bring it to the top. When you go to the UAE access instead of doing. Plus, you're going to subtract it, and it's the same or anything on the right side of the art board. If you need to bring it to the left you need in the X axis to subtract instead of add. Okay, When you are happy with your pattern, go ahead and save. We're save to the desktop. And then just like last time, create a your document. I'm going to change this size to 2000 pixels by 2000 pixels. File place. Select your flower, drop it in and using either all or command C command V create a new tile. Line it up. J. I want to select the four tiles using all going to drag down, find it up, Come and J two more times and there you have your pattern. If there's something that you see that you don't really like, this is kind of a little more open than I would like it's like the first tile DoubleClick. And I'm gonna move this around. I'm actually gonna this over slightly. Click back on the entitled and you'll see that things moved around. Actually, don't like where the purple flower is, So I want to do that back down. I think I might add a couple more open shots from the entitled and you have your pattern. 4. Sharing Your Patterns: you've made a pattern that you love and you want to show the world your design. I won't walk you through three different steps of getting your design out there. How to get it on Teoh Spoon Flour Society six and instagram. So the 1st 1 want to go through a spoon flour. If you go back to your original file this time file export and Spirit Flower will take J peg PNG and GIF files as well as tiff. I believe I'm going to say what does P and G. I'm fine with being 500 pixels by 500 pixels and I will export Save it. Open up your web browser to spirited flower When you were logged in, click create on upload fabric design, choose file and then select The PNG file flowed, and once it is uploaded, you can preview it in different sizes. Fat quarter tests. Watch on then a yard. So you get an idea of how it will look when you could see that everything is lining up correctly. They also have wallpaper. He ends gift wrapped so you could see what it looks like on a present. And with the wallpaper you can preview it on a wall. If you would like to do all paper, I recommend doing a much larger size 500 pixels by 500 pixels, and you should also put in any of your information tags colors how you would like people to be able to preview it and save it with society. Six. You need to say your document as a J peg, and you also need more than just your original tile. So using the document that you tested out the pattern on SE or export as J best quality on an export in your Web browser, Open Society six. And then if you click on cell, it'll bring up this page a little bit of information. Select your file and while it is uploading, so click on a few categories published and it will show you your design. And this is where Society six is different. It will give you the exact dimensions that you need for each individual products. So for the we will dio for a fellow, it needs to be 3500 pixels by for every 500 pixels. You go back into affinity designer pile new document. It will be printed. Select pixels. Take them. Besides that, you need it and click. OK, file place. Select your original tile. Sure, it meets in the corner just like you did with your test document. Still on this document, Man J again and export as a J peg and going back to society six. Select your file once that up leads that will show you a preview of the item. So this you give you a good idea if you like the size of your pattern. If you don't, you could go back in two. Affinity designer, select all of them and then change your size. Save it again and re upload. Instagram is another really good way to get your patterns out there to show everyone that's another place to get really good feedback on your patterns. In this class, I have included three different templates for Instagram. All you need to do is Obinna and Affinity designer. So once you have your template open, you can use either method. Teoh, get your pattern into the template. So I've already included a background in there so you can use the bit map method which is using your fill tool tight and clicking the bit map have been just opening your document. This is an okay method, but I don't think you get as sharp of a detail in your pattern. So I would use the file place method, change the size to something that you are happy with and just like you did with your test documents. Go ahead and line them up. Tell your document it was full. Select all of the tiles and then you can either range back one or you can use the commands and left bracket and move it until you have your liver spot president and I'm going to change the color to match the pattern. Export it as a J peg. When you share your patterns online, I'm something like Instagram or Facebook. I wouldn't say that as your best quality, medium quality would be fine and export. And now all you need to do is upload to instagram. Either send this document to your phone and upload it, or use a program like later or hoot suite to schedule it on. Instagram 5. Conclusion: hope you enjoy the class. I would love to see the patterns that you're making, so share them in the projects tab below. I've also included three instagram templates for 80 years, and you can find them in the class projects had. If you have any questions, make sure to let me know. And if you enjoy the class, please click on the recommend button so that others confined the class more easily. Thanks.
