1. Introduction: Hello, everyone. I'm Ashleigh Shaffer, and I'm a digital artist. I'm going to be showing you how to make your own digital daydream portrait, which is kind of fun way to make a portrait that brings an element of the magical or fantastical to it. I'm going to be covering the basics of digital art in this project, so I'll be covering things like layers and choosing your tools. All right, let's get started. 2. Layers and the Select Tool: All right, guys, before we get really into things, let's discuss a few things. First layers layers are how you keep your art organized when you're working digitally lots of types of layers. But we're gonna be talking about three mainly in this video. Normal layers, overly layers and multiply layers. You should have a little panel something like this that shows where your layers are, and there should be an option toe. Add layers and delete layers and change your layer types. First, we're gonna talk about normal layers. Normal layers are the once a year. He is the most that you can use for sketches. Line are flat coloring things of that nature. Now on the Slayer, I'm gonna make a sketch as an example, Um, and then I'm going to take the opacity bar, which you should be able to find. This makes it more see through so that you can see what you're doing if you create a new layer on top of that that we can use for our clean lines. And when I'm done with my Leinart, I can hide my sketch with the little I toggle right there and makes it so that it's gone pretty much. It's still there if we want it for any reason. But we don't have to look at it. We can see just the pretty clean lines. Now we can create a new layer, put it underneath our line earlier. You should be able to drag the layers around or have a little move up. Move down depending on your program, and we can put the color that we want. I put this orange color on his own layer. Now we're gonna mess around with the select tool, the select tools very, very useful as well, if a little tricky. You can see it's this little magic wand here, right here, and you can refer to only the edited layer or two other layers were going to go with just the Advil air for this. So we're gonna go on our layer with the orange umm oval, and we're going to select it and it should select everything and without worrying about the words or the, um, white. And you could solve that. I can scribble all over it without going outside the lines because I have selected it all right. Now that we've talked about the selection tool and some of the types of layers. Let's get into the more complicated types of layers. Let's talk about multiply layers, multiply layers, take the color that you're using and put a dark multiplication of that layer on top of your current colors. So it's like layering a darkness on your current layer, and you can see that I'm filling it in with our nice selection, keeping it inside the lines. And it's sort of a shadow overlay. Layers, overly layers are sort of the opposite of multiply layers. They create a light layer on top of your colored layer that we have here, so you can use basically this like dark pink. But it's gonna show up is a pretty light orange, and then you can see I'm just kind of blending in this a little bit. Don't worry if this feels a little fast, because we're definitely gonna go over things in a little more detail as we get onto the further steps. This is just sort of giving you an insured. Everything your friend is the undo button control Z or depressed a little Baquero. As you can see, I just using a bunch of times because I messed up my little highlights. Now the thing I like to do is I like to play around with the color of my Leinart. So I lock the layer and change the colors and you can see I did it with the kind of red. This time That's not necessary. But it is fun to play around with things. You can always save copies of things. And then, if you don't like the way it turns out, you can see how this worked out. All right, let's move on to the project part. 3. Sketching: your program probably comes with lots of different pens and textures and tools. You'll have to play around with him a little bit to figure out what feels right for you. Because the end, whatever you can get to work, works. I tend to stick with a rough pencil type tool for my sketches and just a basic pen for my Leinart. But you can figure out what works for you. All right, so now we're gonna start sketching. You want to make your canvas first If you haven't open to canvas. Ah, you want to get a picture of the person you're going to draw? We're not gonna copy the picture exactly. We're just gonna look at the couple pictures and sort of see what features make them distinct. What looks interesting and appealing about that person. And we're gonna take those features and try and capture them. I'm drawing a picture of myself, and before we add, all the fantasy elements were just gonna kind of draw a basic sketch of that person. So here you can see, I have sketched out my face shape and I'm trying to put in my eyes. The eyes are typically in the middle of the head heads up. You didn't see that I'm trying to get on knows which I'm using basic shapes like circles to create. Just try and look at what these features actually look like, and it will help you a lot. And we're not trying to create this amazing, exact replica of your face. We just want something that's going to be interesting to look at. You may have noticed me flipping the canvas back and forth. That's a trick that you can do that helps you see problems and errors in your drawings. It's really useful. I highly recommend it if you're drawing. Traditionally, you can even use this technique by holding your drawing up to Amir. You can see that I've started on another layer. I am now cleaning up my sketch a little bit, but I'm not quite to the line. Are phase. I'm just doing a clean sketch on top of my super messy sketch, Um, adding in some more details, tweaking something's changing up some things just to get the picture to a point where I'm a little happier with it. You can do this as many times as you feel necessary If you have really clean sketch already , you don't have to do more than one. I just tend to do more than one because I'm a very messy sketcher. You can see I'm trying to capture a few more details. I have my few of my like fickle things and some more detail in the eyes. Just overall. Give things a little more life in detail. We're getting close to being done with this portion of the sketch where I just draw myself normally. So we're going to start thinking about what is interesting and what kind of things I want to go with. I end up going with the like, see theme. You can see I'm putting like a little seashell in my hair and some things aren't gonna stay the whole way through. But that's OK because we're just trying to get the idea out there. I am a water for hair which will be more parent with the coloring. Some features stay the same, like my eyes were gonna be pretty similar to how they were in the initial sketch. I am going to make a wave across the bottom. Just add something to it. Put ah starfish on my face. It's it's kind of silly, but you can do whatever you want to do. Do something with something you like. If you want to do space or stars or leaves or trees, or whatever it is that like you like and makes you happy, try it out elements of that to you. 4. Lineart: All right now, let's we want a liner. Leinart requires that we'll have a little bit of patients because you have to try and get things a little cleaner and a little neater unless you're going for an intentionally messy style, which is totally fine. If that's what you want to go for, that can look really cool. Ah, I personally trying and go for a cleaner style just because I can't really pull that off. I've tried. Now I highly recommend that you look at pictures for, like, final details. Well, you can see I was trying to do a starfish year and I messed up a little bit. I try to do a pattern I didn't quite like. And so I had looked up what starfish actually look like and decided you just small bumps. Instead. Though getting references is always a good idea, you're not sure. Look up what something looks like. I also looked up pictures for what of waves and tried to sort of incorporate them with what my hair looks like to create something visually interesting. You'll want to keep in mind things like you don't have to keep everything in your sketch like I started to draw the little shell, and I just felt like it was too busy and I didn't like the way it was looking, so I just got rid of it, and that's fine. So you'll want to be careful of line. Wait and try to keep your lines from being all the same, like thickness all the way through. You want some to be thinner and some to be thicker because it will add to your drawings, death and just make it look in general pretty nice. If you have differences in line, wait. 5. Colors: all right, so now we're gonna make a new layer that goes below or Leinart layer. I'm going to fill in everything with a solid color, even if it's not going to be that color for right now, because it's gonna help us out later on. In our coloring process, you can use the fill tool or the pen tool. I used to make sure both because there some holes in my Leinart. There's probably gonna be some holes in your Leinart, and then I can select the entire thing and start filling in the different colors. It's a personal preference thing, whether you want to keep them on the same layer or do them on different layers for different colors. It's easier to make changes if you do things on more layers, but it also can get a little bulky and overwhelming. If you have too many layers, you can see that I've chosen some complementary colors here about some blues and some like orange, pink, some blue green and some orange pink. We'll see here that I'm changing some of the colors like my I started off a different color . That's OK, I it's okay to change your mind on things located decide you want things to be different. It's a very easy thing to do with digital art to change things, and it's one of its strong points is its ability to change. You also notice that I locked the layer that my hair was on. This is another thing that you can do if you keep colors on separate layers, is locked them and then give them Grady INTs that fill them in So that could have a little more color variation and solid colored objects like my hair looks more watery now because of the additional shades of blue. And you can see that I also changed my mind on these background pinks, all right, and that gets us pretty much done with the basic colors. Now we're gonna move on to using some of those layer types we learned about 6. Shading and Final Touches: first, let's talk about how multiply lawyers work in a little more detail. Here I have two colors that I often used to shape with on multiply layers, a warmer color and a cooler color. I'm also gonna put some general skin tones down at the bottom so you can see how these colors might look if you were to shade skin with, um and we're gonna create a multiply layer on top and I'm going to show you with both colors. So we're gonna take this like, pinkish gray on top, and then we're gonna do the bluish on the bottom, and you can see what they would kind of look like if you were to shade with. Um, Well, now that we've gone over, multiply layers were actually going to do overlay first. I know it's a little counterintuitive, but we have these little white caps that I think will really add a difference to the hairs waves. So we're going to start with that, and I'm gonna do those on overlay layer so that I can get that knife highlighted. Effect as I blend in the edge is, I recommend you try to play around with your blending brushes and find one that you really feel like suits you. I personally like using one with a little bit of texture to it, because I feel like it really, really. Add something to the peace and you'll see that I am doing the Libs Shines like just try and keep in mind where you think things will be highlighted. Where would they be brighter based on the lighter based on their coloration? And where does it make stuff highlights? Now I made a new layer. On top of my line are layer to add I shine Eze because my Leinart, um, has my darks of my eyes inside it. So if you want to do that, you don't have to keep in mind to move that layer to above. You're right, aren't layer. And here have another overly layer that is making the highlights in my hair and the wave that has like a bright blue that I've used. And then now we're going to the multiply again so you'll see that I've got the same blue I've used to darken my shadows on my face and add those in now Water isn't exactly solid, so here I've gone and taken a soft eraser and erased on some of the edges of my hair and the wave to give it a sort of transparent effect. Try and be creative and think of ways that you can eg interesting effects with your art. You'll see that I'm toe adding in some finishing touches were a few more highlights. They're a lot more highlights and shadows in this piece because I wanted to feel kind of soft. Now here, I'm going to sign my piece. I highly recommend that you do this. It will make you have that sense of accomplishment. You finished it. You did it. You made this. You did great. I'd also love if you guys would share with me what you're working on.
