1. Welcome!!!: Hello and welcome to creating a postcard in Canada. Today you are going to be learning how to create a postcard in Canva. And this tutorial will guide you through the process step-by-step. And it's going to be a lot of fun. I really liked this tutorial because if you learn how to create a basic postcard, you can continue on and create so many new designs. Create postcards, you can create invitations, you can create holiday cards. The possibilities are endless. Now the first module is going to be an introduction to Canvas. Here are going to learn how to sign up for an account. And you're going to learn the general interface of canvas. The one thing that might be different is the overall interface. You will still be able to follow along. But because Canada is constantly updating their program, which is amazing, it can lead to slightly different looks between each version of the app or a website. That is one reason why I love using Canva is because they are constantly updating their tools within the program to become more like Adobe Illustrator. I really hope you enjoy this course in. Let's get started. 2. Canva Sign Up Instruction/How To Use: The first thing we are going to want to do is to sign up for a Canva account. And all you need to do is you need to search for Canva. And this is pretty much what you will see. I'm going to click on the first link. And this is what your Canvas page will look like. What we need to do is we need to sign up for an account. If you don't already have an account, I'm going to go over here. I'm going to type in my email address. I'm going to click sign up with email. I will create a password. And that password needs to use eight or more characters with a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. And I'm going to write down email address that I used, as well as my password so I can remember them and login. And then you will click, Get Started. It's free. You will get a confirmation email in your inbox and you will need to click on the link to verify your account. For some reason, if you do not see that email, check your junk folder. So once you have that done, instead of clicking on the sign-up, you'll click login. You will type in your email and password. Now this is what your Canvas dashboard is going to look like. You will have templates up here. And you can see templates down here. And then once you start creating designs, they will be right here. Now you can create posters, logos, Instagram posts, videos, pretty much anything you want. And if you click on the Custom Size right here, you can create a custom size of anything. Now we are going to be using inches because we're going to be printing stuff out. And the typical size of printer paper is 8.5 by 11. So I'm going to go ahead and put 8.5 by 11. And just here, and I'm going to click Create new design. And that will take me to a new page where our design will be. Now, Canvas updates itself all the time. So depending on what version you are using, it may look slightly different, but it functions all the same. So over on the left-hand side we have templates. And you can see that there's just different templates for all kinds of stuff. There is elements. And you'll be able to find graphics and shapes, and photos and videos and even audio. Here. Upload. You can upload files in. This is your text button where you can create text. So I'm going to click on my text and I'm going to click add a heading. And when you do that, it brings up a toolbar right here for your texts. This is the font toolbar. As you can see, there are so many different fonts you can use. Since we are using a free account, we can only use the kind that do not have the crown next to them. The crown is for the premium account and you have to pay for it, but you can pretty much use any one you want. So they have just all kinds you can choose from. If you go over here, this is the font size. If you press the plus, it'll increase it. If you press the minus, it'll decrease it. Or if hover over the edge of the text box, you will see this double arrow. If you click down on it and drag outwards, it'll get bigger. Or if you drag it inwards, it'll get smaller. And then you can click on it and you can move it around to wherever you like. This. A here is the text color. Now you can use any kind of default color you want. Or you could click on this, add a new color. And you can move this slider bar around to choose a general color. And then you can move this one to fine tune it which color you want. Now if we look at this toolbar up here, we can click on it and we can name our document. So I'm going to name it Test 1. And that is the name of the document and that's the name it'll be when you download it. Then if you go over two elements, you can click on it. And you can search for, let's look at a cat. And it'll show up a whole bunch of different things. But I'm going to search for a graphic. So I'm going to click on graphics. And you can see that they have all different kinds of cats. So the one with the crown next to in the Pro we cannot use, but this one is free and we can use it if we want to. And you can move it around. If you click on the picture, it'll automatically drop it in. But if you did not want that picture there, you can click on it. And if you hit Delete on your keyboard, it'll make it go away. And you can move this around however you want. And then you can double-click and you can type in whatever you want. I'm going to put in Garth because that's the name of my brothers caps. In order to make your texts larger, all you have to do is hover over the corner until the double arrows appear. You will click your mouse down and you will drag it outwards. And I'm going to move it around and I'll put the kitty head on top. The last thing I'm going to change this, I'm going to click on the background. If we go to this color, box, it, when we click on it, we can change the colors. So here are some document colors we have. But I think I want to use a default gray color for the background color, and I like the way that looks. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to go over to this download right here. I am going to click the file type and I want PDF Standard, just because this is the typical file that we use when we are printing. And then you'll click Download. And this will be downloaded to wherever your downloads are saved. And when you look at your file, it will look something like this. 3. Postcard: Hello and welcome. Before we get started in Canva, I wanted to show you what we were going to be making today. And today we are going to be making a postcard. Now, I wanted to let you know is that if you didn't want to put dogs on your postcard, guys put cats, horses or anything you want. What is amazing about creating things and Canva is that you can create a brand new designs that you create. So I'm going to head over to Canvas and I will meet you there. This is what it is going to look like when you are in Canva. You may not have all the designs down here, but this is the general layout. And you should already have an account and should already be logged in. So once you're in Canva, we're going to go over to the search bar and we're going to search for post card. It will bring up some templates. And what we are going to do is we are going to click create a blank postcard. So the first thing I want to do is I want to click on the white part of my postcard. I'm going to change it to a light blue color so that it looks like a sky. So I'm going to go over to this color wheel. I'm going to go over to the blue. And I think I'm going to pick a nice light blue color. And you can take this little circle thing, you can move it around. You could also pick colors from here. If you wanted a different color, you can just move it around. It is totally up to you what color blue you want to use. So on the left-hand side you're going to see templates, uploads, photos, and then elements. We're going to click on the elements. And we're going to search for a rectangle. And then we're going to click on it. And this is going to be our grass. So on this sides, if you hover over the little circles, it gives you an arrow and you can enlarge it to make it larger. But if you also hover over on the side, there's this little flat cylinder right here. You can click on it and you can stretch it. So that is the same size as your postcard. And then you can make it shorter by clicking on the bottom one and moving it up or moving it down. And I'm going to move this to the bottom of my postcard. And I'm going to change it to a green color. And I like this green over on the corner. I think that looks really pretty. So the next thing I'm going to do is I'm going to go over two elements and I'm going to search for a tree. So you may not be able to find the same tree that I use. But the wonderful thing about Canvas, I have so much to choose from that you can pick any one you want and any one that you like. Since we are using the free version of Canva, we can only use the ones that say free and not the ones that say pro or have the crown next to them. And we're going to look through here. And there's a whole bunch of different ones you can choose from. That one's really pretty. But I really like this one right here. I'm going to click on it. And I'm going to make it bigger. And then I'm going to right-click with my mouse. I'm going to click copy, and then I'm going to right-click and paste it. So I have two sets of trees. So I'm really liking the way this looks so far. I think that the trees are really pretty. They've got some flowers and I like the clouds in there and they match the background. Well, now that we have our trees in place, what I'm going to do is I'm going to click on the grass area, that green rectangle we made. I'm going to go over to position and I'm going to bring it forward so that the trees are almost sitting behind the grass, like they're coming up from the grass. So I'm going to go over to my elements and I'm going to search for a dog. And once again, we can only use the ones with free on it and not the ones that have got the PRO or the crown next to it. So I really like this dog. And I think he's super adorable. They also have these fun things called magic recommendations. And you can pick a dog from there as long as it's free or you can go through here and pick any one you want. I think this dog is also very cute. So we have our two puppy dogs right here, and I think I'm going to make them a little smaller so that we have room for our hello. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to take it and I'm going to shrink it down. And I'm going to take this puppy and I'm going to shrink him down. And I think that looks cute. However, I went to flip the direction the way this dog is going so that he's looking at the other dog and a cat looks like they're playing. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to click on this puppy. And then I'm going to go up here next to the colors on this top bar. And I'm going to go flip. And I'm going to choose flip horizontally. And what that will do is it'll flip it sideways. And the puppies will be looking at each other. I am loving the way this looks so far. However, if you didn't like the puppies, you could put cats in there. You could put horses, pretty much anything you can think of. But what I'm going to do next is I am going to click Text is right underneath the elements. And I'm going to click add a heading. So we have our add a heading. I'm going to scoot it down so we can see it better. So I'm going to double-click on everything So that is highlighted. And I'm going to type in hello with an exclamation mark. And then I'm going to highlight everything. And up here is a font, tabs. And if you click on it, it shows you all the different fonts you can use are the different types of texts there is. So we cannot use the ones with the crown next to it, but we can use any one that you like. I kinda like this cursive handwriting look. And I think that looks really pretty. And then I'm going to go over to the a right here. So we have our text area are font size and our text color. And I'm going to click on the text color and I'm going to change it to a light blue color that's similar color to the sky. And that is what it looks like. I think I want this a little bit bigger. So if you click on it and you hover over the circles on the edge, you can drag them out and you can make it bigger. And that is what our postcard looks like. So all you have to do is you have to go to this arrow right here. You click on it. And it is your download. So you're going to click PDF print, and you are going to download it. And what it will do is that it will save it to your downloads folder or wherever your downloads go to. And this is what your postcard will look like. So all you need to do is you can print it out on your computer at home. And if you are going to mail it, you'll want to print it on a card stock, which is just a thicker type of printer paper. And that can be found at like a craft store or even your local grocery store, office store may habits. 4. Congrats!!!: Congratulations on finishing this course. I am so excited that she made it to the end and let you meet an amazing postcard for your course project. I want you to create a completely new design. I want you to either create another postcard or a green car and rotation, or even a holiday card. And I want you to post it in the project area. I'm really excited to see what you come up with, and I am looking forward to seeing how you apply what you learned within this course to a brand new design. Thank you for taking this course, and I will see you next time.
