About This Class

A peer review system will allow student submit a project and have the project reviewed by other students.  This is fantastic for courses or classes that are project based and have a large number of students.

Over the course of 3 classes we will build a peer review system that will automatically email student project to review and automatically calculate a score and email the project submitter their results of the review.  Once set up the entire process is automatic.

All that is required is a Google account so if you have Gmail, or a Google+ account then you can do this at no cost!

In this class you will learn how to set up a Google form to allow student submit a project for review.  We will then look at the formula required in the collection sheet that will allocate reviewers to projects.

In the class Create a Peer Review System for your Class or Course - 2 we will look at the Google apps required to auto email students the projects they must review and also setting up the second form for reviewers to submit their review

In the final class Create a Peer Review System for your Class or Course - 3 you will learn how to set up the rubric, the formula required to grade the project after the review has been submitted and how to automatically email the learner their review

By the end of the series of classes you will have a fully functional peer review system

1. Course Intro: in the session, we're going to look out building a peer review system using Google forms and Google cheats . Peer reviews are a great way for learners to learn and for learners to engage. Students learn well from their peers, and by reviewing somebody else's project, they can learn quite a lot formal. It's also useful, too, if you've quite a lot of students on your course and you want to get feedback to them as quickly as possible. But you just can't physically managed to get all of your students. It's very, very good for project work. So what we're going to use is we're going to use a mixture off Google forms, and we're going to use Google cheats. But Google Sheets is going to be the main driver for this, and we're going to use formless such as Look up some. We're going to use the offset functions. So I broken this down into a number tutorials to keep it as relevant on us. Easy to follow as possible. So let's hop into our Google drive now on. We will start on our first on our first form 2. How to take this course: over the course of tree classes, we build a peer review system that's automatically going to email students projects to review or automatically calculate the score on. Then email the project submitted with their results of the review. Once you set up this process, it's entirely automatic. This course is broken down into tree classes. So in this class, the first class you're going to learn how to set up Google forms. Tolo students submit a project for review. We will then look at the formula that's required in the collection sheet that will allocate reviewers to the particular projects. When you've completed this class, you can move on, then to the next next class, where we look at the Google maps that are required toe all toe email students projects that they most review on. We'll also set up the second form for reviewers to submit their actual review. And then in the final class, we will learn how to set up the Rubicon, the formalist that's required to grade the project after it's being reviewed on how toe automatically email the learners, their review 3. Setting up the Project Submission Form: So here we are now in our Google drive and to set up our form, we go to new more and we go to Google forms. And this is going to set up a new blank form for us. And I'm gonna populate a form very quickly here on I'm going to call a peer review samples of mission form and then this form has been set up is a sample of pre set up this former. We're going to talk through the former very, very quickly. So for a peer review, there's some things that you need to make sure that you collect. You need to make sure that you collect, um, identify air for the students of the student's name, the student number, something like that. So I have please into your name here, and we can edit this question here or we can copy it or we can put it in the bin from here . Addison, I say, actually set up the question. If you haven't looked at any off the previous tutorial there under unsure. So we've asked for this student's name. We've asked for the students e mail address, so these are the key pieces of information that we need to get so we can auto respond to them then then need to submit their project towards for review. So they need to give their project in name so they can enter the name for the Project Onda . We want to be able to visit their project so they need to give us a link to their project. So they're the four questions that I have in this particular example and you can have as many questions as you like. But just remember, you want to make it as easy for people as possible to submit their project to you don't want to over complicating their ask any questions that aren't relevant to them submitting their project that if we scroll down further, I have my confirmation page. Andi, I have changed theknot information message to your responses being recorded. You will be sent an email with details off the projects that you need to review. You will also receive an email when your project has bean reviewed. So if we jump into the live form now to have a look at the life for what I've done is I'm gonna just go back into the form here. I've changed the team, so I've made the form look statically more, please. So that's basically the peer review submission form. All I'm doing is on collecting the names. Andi, I am collecting the email address on then on collecting details off the project to be reviewed. The rial magic off this particular form is thesis spreadsheet. So in our next tutorial, we're going to look at the responses spreadsheet for this particular form. 4. Setting up the Collections sheet: to get to our spreadsheet. All we need to do is view responses on our span shed will open up with any responses that we've received. And I've entered in some responses to show you as an example what actually happens. So what's pulled in is thes columns. Here are the columns that are from our form itself. So first of all, it automatically gives us a time stamp. Please enter your name. So if we look, please enter. Your name is first on the go to appear in this order. Please enter your email address so that second so it appears. Second, please enter the name of your project on then please enter a link to your project. So that's pulled in all off the forms now what do we want to do and what is it we want to achieve? We want the students to peer review two projects on. We want them to peer review the two projects that were submitted right before, so we can use some formulas in the spreadsheet to pull in the projects the particular students need to review. And I've already set these up, but I'm going to talk you through them one at a time on that's thes cells here in red. So the first thing we need to do is we need to give each course a unique course code or a unique course. Identify where on you'll see at a later stage in this in these tutorials, why we need to do this. We want the course called to be unique, and we want the formula to be able to fill down each time. So what I have actually used is I've used the role function. So what the role function will do is the row function is going to return the particular row number. So you see there I have equals low open close bracket. If we just change that to open close bracket, you'll see that it returns the number two. But I've decided to add two to this, so that means it's starting at number four. The same with road tree so equals whoa open bracket close bracket will give number. Tree Plus two will give number five. So each time you feel down, that's going to give a new code number, and it's going to be sequential. The next thing that we want to do is we want to pull in the code for the first project that we want the person to review. So we said we wanted to review the project previous on the project previous to that. So we need to pull in the cold for the project that was entered previous. Now I have used the offset function on I'm gonna Jim down here till the last row because it would be a little bit easier to understand what we've actually done. So the offset function is going to return a range that is offset a number off cells away. It's the easiest way to explain it. And I have an additional resource there for you to go and look up some more details on the actual offset function. But for this example, the officer function, I'm. First of all, what it's looking for is the starting point. So that's the cell where you're in. So we're starting here on. We always want to return the course. This course called here one salable. So what we're gonna do is we're going to delete this form a lot, and I'm going to enter this formal again. So equals offset on the first thing that looks for is starting position on the starting position is the cell that Warren? It's G five. Then it wants to know how many rows away is the data that you want to get. So we want to go minus one because we want to go up one row, so minus one, If then is asking us how many columns away and we want to go over here one so it would be minus one. Over here is well, I'm hit Brockett on injured on it returned six. So it's returned this value here. The second thing we want to pull in is the name for the particular project. So again, what I have done is I've used the all set function on DWI have started in the cell that Warren, we've gone up one row. So we've gone up here and then we've got across four columns. So we've gone one to tree for and it's pulled in the name off the project that was submitted by this particular person. After this, we want to pull in the link for the project. So again we used the offset function. We start in the particular cell, we go up one on. Then we also move over 12 tree for, and it's going to pull in that particular link so you can see how using the offset function can pull back in data that you need to a particular cell because it's always going to be in that same place. We want the learners to review two projects, so we've pulled in the project immediately before. But now we need to pull in the project immediately before that, too. So, taking the same example, we are going to pull in the project cold for the project. That's two projects before, so it will be Project number five. So we will use the offset function We've started in South J five, which is where we want to start. How many columns way will this time work on two columns away 12 to bring us two columns way , and then to go over to the course cold, we'd have to go 12 tree four. I'm put in minus for their and that's going to pull in the course code for two projects ahead exactly the same again to pull in the project name. So we're pulling in this cell appear. So we're going to start here. We're going to go minus one minus two. So two caught two rows on. Then columns is going to be 12 tree for 567 So it will be minus seven, which it is Andi, then for the link. We also need to pull in the link on. We will start in this cell will go up, Teoh, and we'll go across seven on Little pulling the link. If you haven't fully understood the offset function, do go to the additional resources which will send you to it. A tutorial purely armed. The offset function.
