1. Class Intro and Project!: Hi everyone. Welcome to my first ever skill share class. My name is Carly and you may also know me as Beach live studio by my UK artists living in Australia. And I really loved to draw key girls on procreate. In today's class, I'm going to share the full process on how I get from this to this. I am going to take you through all the steps that you need to create your own character using a character profile sheet that I created myself, which you can download in the project and Resources section below. I've also provided the references that I use in this class plus the base sketch that you can use to help you get started. So I'm going to take you through the whole sketching process using references, color palate, all the way to shadows, highlights, and final details. So if you're a beginner, or maybe just looking for a way to create a female character, or maybe just gained some new tips and ideas, then this class is for you. So I hope you're as excited as I am to get started, let's jump into the first class and we're going to start by setting up our canvas tau c. There. 2. Setting up: So the iPad I'm using is the iPad Pro. And this is a twelv 0.9 inch size. And I'm using an, an Apple pencil, which is a second-generation. The app that I'm using is called procreate, and it's this one here. Thing available on most iPads. Ist is the iPad six Generation and begin in. And that works absolutely fine for me. If you don't have iPad with procreate, then you can most likely follow along with any kind of drawing tablet or drawing software. I'm sure you will be pretty similar, but there will be features within the procreate app that you might not find on offer. Tablets written stuff. So yeah, this is the answer. We're going to open this up now and then create the canvas. And I'm just gonna go to this plus sign, which is up here on the right hand corner. And this is why you can make a new canvas. So I have a lot of different cavities pre-set up for different things I've made before. But if you just go here and you can create a new canvas. So I usually work. So between two thousand and three thousand pixels for the canvas. So I'm just gonna do like 2500 by 2500 and check-in DPI there which is dots per inch, that's at 300, which is good. And it's on pixels. So I'm gonna click Create. And then I'm gonna use two fingers which you can actually pinch and zoom in and out of the canvas itself that so it's bringing it into the sensor there to go back and check Canvas information. You can go to this little wrench icon up here, make sure you're on the Canvas icon there. And they could go down to the bottom and click Canvas information. And on dimensions here, this is why you can see the pixels that you've set up has and the DPI. 3. Crafting your Character: Okay, so now this is the exciting part, but we're gonna actually make our character. And we're going to answer a couple of questions to get an idea on what they look like and what they enjoy doing and things. So I actually created this little targets or profile which she catchy downloaded in the profile section below. So feel free to do that and follow along if you like. And you can use this for future characters as well. But otherwise you can also just write this down a bit of paper that you have. So it just societies or micro IN focusing on a few things that I felt like was most important for creating null character, the fossil, and I'm going to fill it in with you. So let me just make a new layer. And it's going to use a 6B pencil to write. I'm going to leave their name and so offer a thought a bit more into so I, my, help me a little bit more. So you know what the characters like. The age. I think I'm just gonna pick age of 22 where they live. And the Gold Coast in China is actually in Australia. Have never been myself by herders, amazing beaches. Dan is really nice. I love to go one day. What do they enjoy? Nice surprise there if you follow me already with my artwork, you know how much I love the beach and the summer. The next one is job for her job or she if she might be in school or college or something. And then appearance is the last one. So you can pick the skin color, body type, hair color, hair length, or she's a human or a creature. So creature could be like the mermaid and elf, or a fairy or something. So yeah, these are just a few options that you don't have to use. All of them. Just keep it simple for this video. Okay, and then back to their name. So see you in on how I've created. I think I'm going to cool her coral. Okay, so now let's move on to the next video. Another fun one. We're going to search up some references and finally bring out character together. So I'll see you there. 4. Collecting References: Okay, so now we're gonna get some reference photos to help Braille characters together. So I always love to go on Pinterest. When I search for references, I have actually created a whole bunch of folders already before, just everything that inspires maze. I sometimes refer back because there's so many ideas the eyewitness love to draw. And let's just go back to the homepage. I'm gonna go to the search button. I'm going to set beach GO. So I just need to find a picture of a guy like from the shoulders up. I quite like this one here actually just because she's looking over her shoulder. That's kinda like a little bit shy look, which my character is shy. So I think I'm going to save this one. So I'm gonna tap save. Creating a board quite like this one with the hand eye like this from facing place. I'm gonna save this one just because I quite like her hair. So I'm gonna save it into that same folder. Okay, so I'm gonna go back to the search bar now, and I'm going to search for beach shells because she likes to click the shells and a finger my app as an element on her somewhere around her. And just keep on going as much as you want. And then once you've got the moon in your folder, I've got 758 and Tokyo. And I'm pretty happy with that. Let's move on to the next video. Now what we're going to start sketching our character. 5. Mapping out the Sketch: Okay, so we just broke or of these reference photos together. And an easy way to view them and poke procreate on the other side is that you can just sort of finger up and you just see the procreate app. Haha, so if you didn't see it because you need to recently click on the app for it to show you just in this section. Hold it down and then drag and let go. And then you can move the middle bar across. So now we've got all our reference photos at the side and our canvas ready to work on. So I'm going to start sketching by using this phi tight. I'm gonna use one of my favorite brushes that I loved to sketch wave. So I've actually got a favorites folder here. And it's a torus or evil sketch T brush, which I actually bolt separately to procreate. And I'm going to make it the brush pretty large. Discuss we're going to take some basic shapes to start wave. So I always start by doing a circle for the head, the middle of her phase where it comes down through here, noise kind of sits here. And she's looking down very slightly as well. So I'm just going to make it on a table and you can see that I'll drink placer. And then I bring this line down just a little bit more than a circle. And then i, from the bottom of this, I just bring it up and connected to the outside edge of the circle. In the middle of the circle. And you're going to draw another line across to divide that again. So you got like into four sections, basically, just placing where the eyes would go away and the noise which will be here. And then the mouth kind of be about, hey, the shoulder goes just over her mouth. So that's the base map kind of sketch. Ok, so join me in the next video. Then I'm going to do a new layer and stop and start refining the sketch. 6. Refining the Sketch + 3 Tools I love using!: Okay, welcome back. So now we're going to refine the sketch that we previously just did on this layer. I'm gonna make a new layer and then I'm going to bring this layer one. I'm just going to bring the capacity down to about 28. So going back on the other layer, so I'm going to start bringing in the shapes a little bit more in the eyes and the NYSE and then actually at the Heron. Still use in togas I will sketch brush. I'm just gonna download the image I'm bringing into procreate just so you can see it a bit better. So I'm just lining up the phone and you can see it much better now. So the eyebrows are going to be bringing this line down then. And then I'm going to bring an inverse lady at the eye and then out at the cheek and then back. And you just want to make sure that you don't take the cheek outwards too low. Below the eye of wise, it can look a bit strange. It's always right at the very bottom of the alumina, is that that's where the chief always pops out, hey, and then from here I'm just going to draw a ring where the arm is, where the shoulder is. As you can see, a face kind of comes up here and then we're going to draw in the which shifts you can see for the a is always the bottom part of the air is always kind of in line with the bottom path, the nose, and the top of the air is always just at the top of the hill eyebrows, but that is just a general proportion of her face. So yeah, always just depends on when it comes to drawing, a stylized drawing. You can play around with it and do what you like. As long as unite the basics of FEI, story and, and everything, then you have to kind of know the basics first to them BY other, shift things around and exaggerate different features. I always start by doing a half ooh shape. And then from the corner of her eye coming up, I just draw the eyebrows and curving around the way of like the shape of the eye. And these are usually placed on that middle line. So I'm just gonna bring Pinterest Barack. And I wanted to grab the other picture of this of a girl I had here because I liked the way her hair is. So where the line is in the middle of the face, I'm just gonna use this line to guide where the part is. Okay. And then I'm just gonna add some shelves now on her shoulder. So I really liked the fact of these shows like on her leg and the ones on her arm here. So I'm actually going to use these ones. And then the last thing I teach us a check that the sketches, okay, they've you go to this little wrench icon up in the corner, and then you get a canvas and then flip canvas horizontally. And this is why you can see all of your mistakes. And I can already know is that there's a lot of things that look a bit off. Samy is always at a sketch state that takes the longest to really play around and get the right look and feel that you won't feel drawing before you move on to the next stage. So a sketch can look always excited a friend to the final illustration that you end up with. So I always like using the liquefies Jose. If you go to this little wand icon and then come down to the bottom, you'll find liquefy. And I would have it on push and I was just play around with the sides here. So I'm just gonna have it quite big. And I'm just gonna start adjusting everything back. And then a Mosaic. And I use the selection tool, this little icon here. And I'm just gonna use the free hand version. And it's going to roughly select around us showed area. And then with it on distorts here, I'm going to fill in a little bit because I felt like her shoulder looks a little bit too big. So I do end up tweaking them around quite a bit before I'm happy to make them look a little bit more, Keita. Oh, yeah. Just to make them how I like them ready. So I'm just gonna continue playing around and tweaking it until ally case, it took me a while so I didn't film everything. Suggest always remember to flip the canvas horizontally and use Transform tool to select and move things around and the liquefied soil as well as also a really good. So join me in the next video, we're going to finally move on to some color. And I'll see you there. 7. Creating a Colour Palette: Welcome back to the next video. This is the sketch I actually came up with in the end of jello tweaking. This was the before and then the often. So now we're gonna move on to the color palette. So I'm gonna take you through the process that I usually j. And it's pretty simple. I'm going to start by bringing up Pinterest. So we actually have a folder of color palettes all saved over time. I actually have quite a lot, pretty much the same, but for some reason I keep pinning new ones. And so sometimes if I'm stuck on figuring out columns, I'll just come straight here and I'll just pick a color palette and just stick to that. Okay, I really like this one here is very summary and even says that their feminine, inspirational, dreamy and fresh, which is perfect for the style and fill that I will my ought to be anyway. So I'm going to download this image. So I've just brought it into procreate here. And now I can just hold my finger down on the page there. And now it's selected the color. I'm gonna make a new layer above that. Okay, so now I can just take away that photo. I'm gonna delete the other reference failure that I had there. Okay, so I'm going to click on this sketch image and I'm gonna bring the opacity down to so I can work now underneath and just doing a rough color palette to see what it looks like. I guess I'm going to bring back in the character profiles I made. So refined bats, my character profile, I've got tan skin and blonde white hair. So I'm going to select this collar here and make it a little bit darker. So it looks like a predicate tan color. I'm gonna make sure I'm going to need a layer below the sketch layer. And then I'm just going to block out the colors. It doesn't have to be perfect. This is just so you can see what they kinda look like together. Before I go on, actually, I'm gonna make a new layer. And i'm going to select this blue one and drag it on to the background. And I was going to be my base background. So I can just walk on top of that. So go back to the color layer. Just going to quickly start naming these layers. They usually like to keep on top of name in layers or navigate, mixed up with everything going on. And I'm just going to combine those two. Ok, so going back to the color palette, I'm going to select this kind of white, pinkish color. And I'm gonna use that for the Hare. And I'm going to continue with that color for the OISE. Select it and then make it smaller. So I'm going to continue with the same skin color. I might make it a little bit priors who's going to take that across? And I make another layer. And I'm just gonna make one more color palette. Okay, so I'm gonna go to this color palette. So join me in the next video. We're going to start applying the flat colors. 8. Flat Colours: Okay, so now we're gonna move on to the flat colors and color palette in the corner here. And I've made my sketch quite big on the canvas and the capacity is down at FastCV percent. Sorry, I'm gonna make a new layer underneath the sketch. And I'm going to call this skin. Sometimes you can go on top of the sketch layer and actually do a final lineup. But lately for a while about shipping, going straight from a refined sketch straight into color. So I'm going to use the shell brush. The shower brush is actually under calligraphy on pre-create, which I have actually just saved it already in my favorites folder. So I'm going to select the skin color, which I'm unskilled. And I'm gonna just start coloring in. And then I'm going to make another layer on top of that. And that's going to be named the hair layer. So I'm going to select that hair. He's in the shower brush still, and I'm just gonna color in the head. And I can add a new layer above the skin. And keeping the same white colored of Gs. And I'm actually going to use the hot air brush for this. And that can also be found under airbrushing. Say hot air brush is just at the bottom there. And I just like the kind of hard lines it has for the eyes because I'd love to meet them pretty, pretty solid. Okay, and then selecting the eye color, I'm gonna make a layer above the eyes and I'm gonna click on it. And then I'm going to select clicking Mosque CE, the little arrow here. That means that this is now attached to the IaaS layer beneath it. Say when you draw on top of the I am on that layer. It won't go outside. Just like that. So now I'm just going to fill in with the same brush. The people's maybe known to the eye brows making enough any layer. And I'm gonna use the dry brush for this one. And dry ink wash is actually under income just here. And now I'm going to do another new layer on top of everything and cooler lips. And I'm going to again use the hot air brush again for this one. And then for the ellipse. And it's gonna make the top one a little bit soft because I'll just bring that collar down slightly. And then I'm going to click on the lips layer and click Select. Now, this again won't allow me to go over the lips and I'm just going to basically just color on top and make that one a little bit darker. Next, I'm going to do the shows and I'm going to keep them on a separate layer for both of the colors, say festival, the shells whites. And I'm going to use, going to stick with the hot air brush for this one. And lastly, we are going to be the starfish and say that's it for this lesson. In the next lesson we're going to start doing some lines. 9. Adding Lines: Okay, welcome back to the next video. We're now going to move on to in some line WACC. So I'm gonna take away this color palette with any dye anymore. I'm gonna make a new layer above all about flat colored layers. And I'm just gonna call it lines. So actually I might want to take this sketch layer down a little bit more. The capacity, I mean, a little bit more. Just so I can see. I'm doing a little bit better. So I'm going to start with the skin Versailles. I'm gonna slip skin color and then bring up the color palette. I always work in this classic books most the time, but you have other options down here as well. That you got the desk, you've got harmony and value as well. And then you've got a color pallets which you can make your own color palettes here as well. Yeah, going back to the classic one. So I just basically just move this little circle across and down very slightly, just sorry, the color a little bit darker than what it was, but not too drastic. And then I usually use a dry ink brush for my lines. Just check the thickness and let make it tiny bit smaller. And then I basically go over anywhere that's gonna blend with scholars, say, this line here where her shoulder and have face off that will disappear if we took away, whoops, the sketch layout. So I need to make sure I draw a line to define the difference between the two. Right? That's pretty much it for the skin. Okay, I'm gonna do the lips now, so I'm going to select that colour and track it basically down to the right diagonal, a whole global goal, the whole back, back, back, back. And then you can just take the sketch layer just to see how it's looking. Hey, that's probably okay for now, are probably go into a bit more with the details. I'm an ISP of hair hasn't been done yet, but I will just add in a little bit later. Okay, so I'm gonna bring Pinterest backup quickly. I'm just going to go back to the algorithm that we created and bring up this shows picture. I'm going to select the Show Colorado and bring that down. And then the last thing I'm gonna do is use the arrays are here and it's actually selected on the hot air brush if you click it twice or bring up all the brushes that you can use for it. And I'm going to go into the shelves quickly. And I'm just gonna give them a little barrel shape to them. This is why it's good to bring up reference phase because it just helps you sort of see the little things that you might wanna add to estimate the, make it look a little bit better. Okay, so that's pretty much it for the lines. This is a pretty simple joins. There's not too much more I could do with the mightiest. Just paid a little bit on just showing up. This little bit here to stir it defines whether neck and face say, yeah, that's pretty much it. Okay, join me in the next video. We're going to move on to shadows. 10. Applying Shadows: Okay, so we've done all the flat colors or they're sort of extra lines to define the drawer in. Now we're gonna do some shadows. So I'm gonna make a new layer above the lines and name it shut. And I always say it's a multiply. So I'm gonna click on this end. And if I scroll right up, this is where it has multiply. So first, I'll just select a color, skin color. And I'm doing what I did with the line. So I'm just going to drag it down to the right a little bit just to make it a little bit darker. And I used the dry ink brush at the moment, mostly for shadows. So to make sure I don't go out the lines, I can just click on the skin layer, click again and then click Select. And that now ensures that I won't go outside of the skin layer. So there making sure you do come back to the shadows layer because I've done a lot of times where I have not clicked properly. And then I've done all the shadows and realized I was on the wrong layer. So just always double-check your back onto the shadows layer. So I usually hit my shadow is pretty simple and I just think about where things are overlapping or so. There's always a bit of a shadow in the air and under the NYSE, and it's always around the neck area. I always add some shadows just under the hairline as well. But if you are looking into doing more work with shadows, you just always gotta think of where the light source is coming from. And you could really go in and learn a lot more about shadows because there is a lot more types of ways that shadows can actually be cost onto human face depending on where they are. And then I'm going to click off of the select and then hope I think down to get the hair color and do the same. So I'm gonna click on the hair, click again and click on select, and then get back onto the shadows layer. Okay, that's pretty much it for shadows among men. I might go back in and change things, but I'm going to click on here and then take the opacity right down to about, to about 19%. So it just depends on where you feel that it looks good for. Yea, okay, so that's it for the shadows. Now we're gonna move into the next lesson. We're going to move on to doing some details. 11. Details and Highlights: Okay, so welcome back. We're going to now move on to Jane some final details on the illustration and add a few things to bring it all together. Festival, I'm going to add some eyelashes. And I find that the moment that the shell brush does pretty well for eyelashes, I'm gonna bring back the sketch layer so I can just refer back to where I did do the luscious previously. Sometimes I have to copy and paste the eyelashes. I Dave, but another easy way, I just flip the canvas horizontally. And then I'm gonna make a new layer on top of the luscious. Here I'm gonna select the shower brush. Again. I'm going to select the starfish color and make the color slightly darker. And we're gonna use a dry brush. And if you hold down the color button at the top here, this is actually going to change it to the previous color that you're using. Okay, so I'm going to turn off the sketch layout. And I'm gonna select the icon and make it a little bit darker. Then I'm going to click on the layer and press select. And then using the soft brush which is under airbrushed. And I'm just going to make the tops of the eyes a little bit darker and the soft brushes gives a really nice smooth blend. All right, so I'm going to make another layer on top. Say select in the skin color. I'm gonna make it a little bit. So I'm going to add some kind of sand effect on her skin in spray paints. There's one called flicks. We're gonna see what that looks like when she got to drag this layer. So it's above the skin. And then I'm going to set it's a clipping mask. And then I'm gonna click on this little button and you can try it. Change like the colors in the way that it looks by Guy and free holidays. And now I actually really like this one ad. Oh, it does. Given such a pretty lucky as she looks like lithos hurting, I might even keep that. Ok. And now I'm going to make a new layer above star fish faces. And I'm going to call it by light. And I'm just gonna use the pure white color. And I'm gonna use the hot air brush. And then I'm gonna go to luminance and I'm going to use the flare. Now we're going to add some blush. Cy, I'm gonna make a new layer above the skin. And that's also Muncie. We just set that to eclipse the Mosque, which is what I wanted. And then I'm going to select the skin color. And then the brush I'm gonna use is the soft brush. Okay, now I'm going to just add some extra glue. And I actually really love he's in the light pen. You can also find the light pen under luminance. I'm just going to have it set to almost white color. So I really like how the light pen looks. It's got very neon type of effect to it. And then lastly, I'm going to add another layer and I'm going to name this highlights. And I'm going to click the little n here and change on this list down to eye fillet. And I'm gonna use the soft brush for this. I just want to select the hair layer to says they if the light was coming from this side and kind of hit in the head. I'm just gonna a little bit on the face. So I'm going to select the skin layer. I'm just going to add on one more layer and I'm just going to call this strands, just kinda use the dry ink brush. Okay, so that's pretty much it. I'm actually done. So I'm gonna make one new layer. And this is where I usually add my logo. So I actually have free created my own stamp already, which is my beach life shady a logo. So as you can see here, I can just make it larger or smaller and I can just stamp it. And I want to invoice, but because it's not very vibrant there and go to the letter and then I'm going to change it to add. Because as you can see now that just made it a lot more of a brighter white. So you can actually see, OK, I think I'm just gonna add in one more layer. And I've actually got these presets stamps here that I've made. So I'm using the hot one. I think I'm just gonna give her two little hearts on the face there because I think that's pretty okay. I'm gonna leave it as that. I'm pretty happy. 12. BONUS: Full Time lapse : Today we'll be back. Back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back, back.
