One of the things I love most about Mixed Media art is the texture. You can build up so many layers, and when you do, you end up with a rich and textured piece of art. In this class, I will walk you through several techniques I use to give my Mixed Media art pieces depth, texture, and an aged richness that only Mixed Media art can produce. You can use one or two, or all of these techniques together to create your own unique background ready for your own unique focal point.

1. Create Rich and Textured Backgrounds: Class Intro: Hey there. Welcome to my beginner mixed media course. Create rich and textured backgrounds. Mixed media style. My name's Hannah Clark. I am a author and illustrator and a mixed media folk artist. And this is my first beginner course in mixed media technique here on skill share. Um, so as a mixed media artist, I am, um, probably known most for my rich in texture backgrounds and the layers that I put into mixed media. And actually, that's one of the things that drew me to make speedy art the most was being able Teoh use so many different mediums to really create this really rich layered effect. Eso what I'm going to teach you in this class is I'm going to take you through several different techniques that I use in order to create that layered texture. Look, So let me show you a few examples of the kind of backgrounds that we're gonna creating in this class. So this is a piece that I did in my art journal, and I'll just try and get your really closely. You can see, um, some of that detail in the background. You can see kind of that There's lots of lots of stuff going on back there. Um, all through. So there are a lot of different techniques that I used to get this this kind of texture. Look, let me show you another one, but this one as well. You see, um, all this background going on here, there's all sorts of things going on back there. But But what I want to do is I want to take and show you how to use these several different techniques to create a cohesive background, something that while there is a lot of rich texture going on in it, it's still all comes together to create a foundation for you, Teoh. Then go ahead and put your focal point of your art piece on top of it. So I will not be taking you through the steps of creating a focal point. This is all just about creating a background. So it's a very beginner course. And so, um, if you are just starting out of mixed media, this is for you. If you are an advanced mixed media artist and want to just brush up on your skills, this is also for you. Um so I'm excited to have you in class today. Let's go get started. 2. Create Rich and Textured Backgrounds: Supplies: Okay, So the supplies for this class Well, really, Very depending on what speaks to you. I'm just going to tell you what supplies I will be using. Um And you are by no means required. Teoh, Uh, get all of these in order to complete this class. These are just some of the mediums that I'm gonna be using to demonstrate the techniques. So, first and foremost, what you'll need is some kind of a surface to be experimenting on. I'm gonna be using an altered book, but you could use a canvas you could use. A handmade aren't journal. You can use a mixed media. Um, Strathmore has a great brand of mixed media, um, journals. So whatever. Whatever you choose to use, um, we'll work. Just needs to be some kind of an art service. Another thing I'm gonna be using in this class. Of course, you'll need brushes. You will need Matt. Medium or much podge is a great but much thicker glue, uh, medium to use for mixed video art. Um, if you don't like the thickness of the Monge punch, what I recommend is is thinning it with a little bit of water and that should work just fine. Um, so I really love the liquid text brand of Matt Medium. You will also need a some form of Jess. Oh, acrylic gesso. I'm gonna be using white and possibly black for this class. So, um, whichever color speaks to you, both of them are are great. Um, and and really, where this is an experiment class, Get the cheapest One is what I would what I would recommend. Um, I will also be using modeling paste. Liquid tax has a great brand of that. What modeling paste is It's kind of like drywall paste Almost is what I would what I would describe it as, but it's it's pasty, and it holds form very well. So I use it, um, a lot in my mixed vinyard. Actually, if you if you look closely at any of my art pieces, particularly my mixed media mermaid course that I that I did recently, then you'll see that I use it even with the hair of of my mermaids. In that particular course, you will also need some sandpaper. You will need scissors. Um, you'll need various forms of collage material I've got here about some tissue paper. I've got these royalist cake doily is that I love and use a ton. I've got some texture papers that are just great for this kind of stuff that I've also got some foil, some scraps of a foil cake, lace doily, our Royal East oily. And then I've also got some foiled fine art papers that I will also be using Another thing that I will be using as I'll be using various stencils Got a cherry blossom, a dragon fly music. I've got some branches here, some more wild flowers and then some bird cages. Doesn't matter what your stencils are. Just if you like the design, that's that's what we're looking for here on Ben. You will also need some form of ink. Hossam. Either black or brown ink. Um, the acrylic Inkster. Great. Um, I also love the India ink, so really, it's whatever whatever speaks to you. The other thing that I will be using is iridescent or metallic paint. Acrylic paints. Um, if you're just starting out and you don't want to invest in professional paints, I highly recommend surround coat. They have a great texture, and they go on really well in a really nice to work with, Um, full cart does a nice set of metallic paints is well, and, um, really, it really doesn't matter what brand you go with. I just really love to work with Saran. Coat Another thing that you could possibly if you have lying around the house paper punches . I've got this leaf paper punch from Fisker so that I really love to use. You want to use a palette knife with for your modeling paste? So they're your supplies? No, let's go get started. 3. Lesson 1: "Put Down Some Underpants": All right, Welcome back. So this first part of the course I'm going to be demonstrating collage as a four way to bring more depth and texture into your paintings on your art Now collage I use in multiple ways I'm going to show you kind of a layered way of using it. Because that's usually what I do is I take all these kind of different techniques and I layer them into my piece. And that's really I feel what gives it the most depth and texture. And so what I'm going to start with is I'm going to start by putting down a kind of a foundation base layer, and then I'm going to build on top of that. And so the first layer that I'm gonna be putting down first, I'm gonna pour myself some at medium, because I'm gonna be using a bit of it during this segment. And I'm going to start with some tissue paper. Tissue paper is a really great technique in collage, because it really can give you your piece on aged leathery look. And the way you do that is just rip off a piece of your tissue paper and then just start. Just crumple it up. You just really try and get it is tight as you can get it without, of course, tearing it and then But you want to do is uncoupling and you see all that texture that's going on. And you probably There you go. Can you see all that texture that's going on in there now that is going to stick with us as we lay this down onto our canvassers. So I'm gonna just start with little pieces and I'm just going to start covering this and what you want to do is you want to take your breast, you're gonna want to put down some a light layer of that medium I usually like to start a corner just helps me to be more organized. As I worked my way across the page and then you just start laying it down and and don't be afraid to add some more wrinkles as you're going. You're just blue ing this down. And because it's so thin, it's going to go down really easily without you having to put a layer on the back side of the paper like like I do with other kinds of papers just to keep the bubbles out. But with tissue paper where it's so thin, you don't have to do that. So just start. Just start doing that and I like to just kind of not not wanted up too much. But really make sure there's some nice texture in there before I lay it down. And then I'll just at another piece just and now you're not gonna notice Ah, lot of this texture until you start building layers. Um, and that's OK, because that's the whole point of layering is that, you know, each layer adds something new that doesn't really come out until the final coat of whatever you're doing. Um, so just keep building and don't get discouraged as you build, just keep on going, and when you're finished, you're gonna end up with something pretty cool. So the tissue paper is the first bit of collage that I wanted to show you on. I love this tissue paper because, um, it's such an easy way to age whatever it is you're you're working on, and I love, um, vintage e looking things and to be able to have Theobald City to create some vintage looking anyway is a pretty meat skill, I think. So you're gonna finish laying that down and see how I got this water of the tissue paper here. Just don't be afraid. Toe wanted up and then really glue it down when I don't know if you can see this, that I'm gonna hold it up and hopefully you can see Do you see that texture showing up? Doesn't that meet? So, yeah, there's your first bit of collage. This is gonna be a multi collaged piece, so I'm going to add a few more elements now, the texture to scrapbook paper is really fun. So you see all that fun texture? It's almost like seashells or scandals or something like that. I love this is one my favorite wants to use. So I'm just gonna tear off a piece and you tearing is is really the best way because it feels the most organic. Um, when you are trying to combine it with other forms of collage, I wonder if it's gonna stay. I don't know if it'll stay on that tape right there. Go way that one down. Really down somewhere. Over here. Just tear off that street egx. Now, on all my most of my art, actually, all of my art, I always lay down a foundational layer before I even put down Jess. Oh, um, and I do that because one, it's I've heard them referred to as underpants. You're putting your underpants on, and then you're gonna put, you know, the actual showpiece over the top of it, you know? And so this is this is like your underpants, your your course at whatever you wanna call it. It's the foundation of what's to come. And so I like to do all this first with the mat medium and then cover it all with the Jess . Oh, gonna try this other more Pebley sort of scrap of paper. And just don't worry about neatness or perfection. Um, one. You're just you're just trying some things out here. That's why it's so great to work into some in something like an art journal or unaltered book like this is your just experimenting. So it doesn't really matter what what mistakes you think you make or whatever. I make lots of things that I finger mistakes in my art. And then I end up, they end up being my most favorite thing about pieces of art. And I just discover some new things when I'm just like, letting myself just kind of create. So don't worry if it looks kind of like a mess for a minute. I usually like toe work in threes. I think threes are a powerful combination in art, So I usually like if I'm using particular kinds of paper, I usually like to use him at least three times in my artwork, and that just seems to balance things out, even even with the underpants, even with the texture that you're putting down in the first place. So there's that. Now let's move on to this next texture piece. So last but not least, I'm gonna add some of these, uh, cake to release to my paper. And I used these a lot in, um, in all of my art. I just love one. I love the design, and I love the way it comes through in the final piece so you can find these on Amazon there, just the royal laced cake. Doyle, ease, um, and they come in all kinds of different sizes. From this is a forage. All the way up to, um, a 12 inch, and I just I just let him on. You can go whole, or you can cut him or tear them. And they they were great. And they go down pretty easily, just like, um, just like your tissue paper. You don't have to a wet both sides in order to get him to stick because they're so thin. So I just laid that down there. I'm gonna cut out a corner piece here on, uh that there and then I'm going to add another one down here. Over here. Let's do that. So this could be done with anything. Paper like that has a texture that you really, you know, just like, um, feel free to use it. I mean, it's it's mixed media art. You can do anything. It's great. Eso get creative with what you decide to use as your collage elements. They are pretty versatile. And please, I mean, if you find something that you just love, please feel free to share in the classroom because I know I would love to learn have any new materials to use on. I'm sure that other people taking this class will love Tuas. Well, so feel free to share. This is another great thing about mixed media is It's just It's a very sherry kind of environment community, and I love that about it. Okay, so there's those claws element so far, I'm gonna finish laying down two more sections of the tissue paper, and then we will then go from there. 4. Lesson 1.5: "3D Underpants": now, the last underpants collage element that I wanted to share with you is using these Fisker paper punch to create some more texture and some fun little surprises. So what I usually do is I'll take a not a super thick paper, but thick enough for to kind of to rise up a little bit off the paper on. And I'll just punch out a few of these and then I will just We went down as a part of my the underpants here, and I'll usually depending on what peace I'm making. I usually try to incorporate, um, something symbolic with the paper punches if I can. Um, for example, I did a piece called a gentle heart a little while ago, and I What I used as the kind of the background underpants is, um, I used punched out hearts, um, just punched out a bunch of hearts and put them in the background. And so, you know, just kind of like it's just one more layer to the meaning of the peace and also something that also contributes a cool element to your texture in depth. So I'm just gonna go ahead and finish gluing these down. We'll let this dry, and then we will move on to the next segment of Kalash 5. Lesson 2: "Adding Gesso": Okay, so are underpants are all dry. And now it's time to put on a coat of Jess. Oh, I'm just gonna take I'm going to use white just so. And you don't need a lot of this. It goes pretty far. That's probably too much already. But for the Jessel, you're gonna want, um, an old crusty brush to put it on. So I am usually getting pretty cheap at places like Hobby Lobby or Michaels and then just kind of designated Jessel brush. And as you can see, this one's been well loved. So then just put on your Jess over the top of your underpants, and they're gonna I don't like to put it on super thick because I kind of like that, um, shadowy feeling in the background, and it also gives me a chance to see how my texture is gonna come out on the final piece in the end. But if you're gonna be doing any kind of major acrylic or whatever medium you choose to use any kind of painting over the top, you might want to go a little bit thicker. But don't worry, because this not too thick because you don't want to fill in all the texture, but, um, but thick enough to where you have a nice surface to adhere your paint, too. But the thing that's nice, too, is that even these brush strokes So this is kind of an older brushing. It's a little bit, it's a little bit warn, so it gives more course brushstrokes, which also adds an element of texture. So pretty much everything that you're layering on from the liquid mediums to the paper, or are whatever kind of mediums who you're using their all adding something some kind of depth to the texture. Hey, now I'm gonna give you a close up view of this texture that we created How it all looks pretty uniform now, but see all that nice texture going on there. I could see your leaves folk ing through. You can see the textured scrapbook paper, your tissue paper kind of swayed vintage age to look your kick. Doyle ease. I mean, there's lots of neat stuff happening in this piece already, and we're just getting started. So is this. Collage underpants is one of the ways that I, from the very start, create a lot of texture um and then from there I just build on. So I will be using collage again on another layer of this background. But, um, I'm gonna show you a few more steps before I get to what I like to call the over pants kalash materials that I use for texture. So I will see you guys in the next segment. 6. Lesson 3: "Stencils and Modeling Paste": Okay, So the next step that I take in making a rich and textured background is to use modeling paste and stencils in my background. I do this before even begin putting on any color. So I've got this fun stencil right here. But I'm going Teoh, use in the way that you use modeling paste is you have your palate night. I like to use this style. It's kind of got a flatter Ah, whiter head. Um and then you just take your modeling paste. You just get a little bit of on there and then just kind of scraping on over the top of your stencil. And, um, I want to go too thick or too big with this. I'm just trying to get a little bit of extra raised up texture here, and you can't supersede that, but I'll try and get it close enough that you can. There you go. So there's a little bit more texture there And just make sure you clean off your stencils as soon as you're done with them, because this modeling paste, it hardens really quickly, and it'll ruin your special if you don't clean it off right away. So I just baby wipes to do that when it comes right off. It might also be useful Trended toe. Make them last longer too. Just have a kind of a tub of of warm waters, warm sudsy water close by that you could just put your stencil right into. And that'll clean off, especially on the in inner corners of the stencil. Because sometimes even with the baby wife, you can't get it all the way off. So having that close by is a nice option as well. So gonna do a few more of these stencils here. Got these cool bird cages. I really liked these a lot, so we'll stick them on just along the side right here. Now, Like I said, this building up this rich texture is all about layering. You gotta just kind of be okay with working over things that you've already put down. Like I'm working over the top of underpants Collage, texture. Um, but don't worry, because when you put on your top coats of paint, that texture is gonna come peeking through in really cool and fun and unexpected ways, and that's that's one of the things that I love. So much about it is that you never know when you're layering like this, you never know what's gonna pop out of the surface. And it's it's usually really neat to see it all come together. And then I wanted to do just one more down along the bottom here again, I'm using that power of three. So just three stencils, just like I did three of each of the different kinds of collage that I was working with. Make sure your queen off both sides understand salutes you. I thought about this cherry blossom. Just having some of it sort of pick up on the page with this little bird in the corner to kind of tie into that those bird cages up there. Okay, so I'm just gonna let this dry now and then we'll come back and I'll show you how to get it ready for paint 7. Lesson 4: Bringing Out the Details: Okay, so the last step that I take in Really? Um, bringing out everything that we've done underneath all the underpants and the stencil and modeling paste levels and everything is to use two different kinds of paint. I've got to this first I've covered it with just a regular basic color. Um, this is called turquoise deep, and it's by liquid text the heavy body on. And then I've also got his inference, Violet Fine by golden. And this is an iridescent paint I really love using iridescent and metallic paints to really bring out everything that we've put underneath our base color of paint. The other thing that I'm going to show you is how a lighter color or a contrasting color could help you bring out all of the texture that you've put underneath your base color. So let's go ahead and let me show you how this is gonna work. So I'm going to start with this iridescent tone, and I'm also going to show you the difference with a metallic paint as well, and just show you how that really brings out everything underneath. Got a little dab of that over here, and I just want to use just a nice flat brush. Make sure it's dry when you start, because the dry is what allows you to kind of control the paint a little bit more and you're just gonna dab just a tiny bit on and kind of cleaned it off just a little bit so that you have a nice light coat and then I just lightly brush over to slightly brush over things, and this iridescent isn't going to show up as well as the metallic, but it just gives you kind of hints of the texture behind. You can see right here. This is where we put that paper. I'll pull it up a little bit and hopefully you can kind of see a little, um of the iridescent sheen on the paper that we put underneath. There kind of brings out that meat texture. Whether it is now, it's starting to come a little bit better. So there's our texture there with an iridescent color. Hopefully, you can see that she another it is not pretty. Okay, and now I'll show you a metallic. What that does this is gonna come out quite a bit stronger because it's so cake. We'll try over on these little bird cages will do the tell it. Or maybe we'll just do these little leaves. See how that brings out those leaves right there. Get up closer in just a minute, and then you'll be able to see it. Buddy, these are just kind of hints of interest that are in the back of your painting that I'm kind of really give it that layered. Um, you know, Rich, look that every painter really wants in there painting, and you could do multiple colors, like I'll put a little bit of the gold over here to bring out that paper just a little bit more, you know, pretty that is That's just really coming up that gold. You see the leaves in there, and you got that interesting thatched sort of paper over here on this side. That pretty? Yeah, I see that. Okay, so let's add some a little bit more of this metallic. Looks like that over there is a little bit on a kind of cool fire. And when the way that I apply it is, I just kind of do sort of like a circular motion and keep it a pressure of my brush really light. And that just kind of helps the texture come to the surface. Oh, and so look, I didn't even realize that there was a leaf. And then look at that. You can see that leaf coming out right there in that paper. It's so fun because he you forget what? You put 100 teeth there and then you start adding this. He's this very last layer, and then you start to see it all come out, and it's just so pretty because you don't really realize why you're putting it all down and tell this moment, and then you're like, Oh, yeah, that turned out so great. So this is what I love. This is my favorite step in the whole process is kind of the revelation of what we were doing it all for. So when you get this kind of pretty light effect on the cages here, we put down with the stencils a little bit more over here, coming on C. It's just that light can't makes him look like little mental cases. I'm sure that you guys with your own imagination and your own tastes will come up with some pretty amazing things. And I can't wait to see what your backgrounds look like. That's the one thing that I love So much about Art is that everybody has a different take on what they like in their tastes and everything. And to see that all come together and come out there are work is just such a neat experience for me. Anyway, as a teacher is to see what kind of my idea inspires and other people, and vice versa. What other people's ideas bring out in me? It's just such a neat, kind of, um, giving culture in art. Okay, so there's that. Now I'm gonna show you what a light color a lighter than your base color will bring out in your paint. So I've got this orange over here that I kind of like a almost almost quarterly, Not quite Coralie that I used on another painting. And I'm just gonna show you right here how that's gonna bring out the texture again. You're gonna want to clean off your brush a little bit, make make sure you don't have too much paint on there, and then you're just gonna want to use your really light hand. Yeah, that does There it also kind of ages it a little bit. Well, look at that. That's pretty. A little. Almost a little bit rusty again. Remember what I told you about when we're putting in the underpants? Um, kind of the power of three. So if you've got a little bit of one color, be here, then you want to put a little bit of over here and over here are you know, over here you want to make sure that there's kind of, like a balance of a new on balance, odd numbered balance of of you're elements in your piece to really kind of bring it all together. I really like how this stencil here? It turned out its meat. Okay, so I think I'm gonna add a little bit more of this. Your destiny balance things out. Like I just explained about the power of three. Just kind of play around with it until you have kind of the balance and look that you want before you, you know, put your art over the top of it. At least that's what I do. Em This for me isn't finished. This is just ready for the frosting of the piece of that makes sense, but it just gives me a lot of inspiration, Teoh, what I actually want to do with peace at this point to see the background come come out. It really helps me kind of decide. Okay, What kind of what kind of pieces is gonna be? What's gonna be the the theme of this piece, And this is reminding me very much of, like, underwater. So some, maybe a mermaid scene or something like that is what I would end up creating out of this. Some kind of, uh, sea creatures in these cages instead of little birds, you know? Yeah, that's all coming together. So lots of texture. Really rich variants of colors. Um, just so much fun stuff going on in here. 8. Lesson 5: Inking and Aging: now, the the last step I'm going to show you, um, is something that I usually wait to do the very end of the piece. But since this is just backgrounds class, I'm just going to go ahead and show you what I do, Um, so you can see and hopefully use it in your own art as that kind of final step of bringing out that meat texture in your background. Um, so what I'm going to show you is kind of the way that I really age a piece, and I do that using black ink. And this is just Bombay, India ink. And what I will dio is you wanna have your ink, You wanna have kind of a brush that you don't really care about very much. This is a really old brush that I've designated as my ink brush and in just a small one. And then you're gonna wanna have some baby wipes on hand because you're gonna need to be kind of wiping away with that soil. Keep Go ahead and keep this on hand. And this is pretty dry. This acrylic paint dries pretty fast. Oh, dear. I'm gonna leave the color there give you a close up view of what that is all looking like here. Kind of neat. How much more feels like there's going on in there now that you've done that top coat of of paint. Okay, so now I'm going to show you the final stuff that I do if my whole piece was was finished. Um, and this is one of my favorite steps because it just kind of really transforms the peace even more. So I take my black ink, You're just gonna dip your brush in there a little bit. Don't get too much to start off with, because it's it's going to go fast. Um, and you want to just be really ready with your wife in, and I just start by rubbing on the quarters says where I start and then, um well, you'll see. So what I do is I just take my quite and just kind of remove most of it, and you'll do. You'll work in layers. So if it takes off most of it and you don't quite like that level of and don't worry about it, custard can go back and add more on, but you just don't want it to become permanent. Um, before you're sure that that's what you want. So that's why that the baby having the baby wipe on hand, this is really nice is you could really control how aged you're, I think, makes your piece. So come down here, we'll see. That's a lot of ink that's gonna go pretty far, but that's OK. I got my people with you. See that nice kind of you can also do this with, um with acrylic paint us, for example. I've used the color wrong number, or you can use Payne's gray. Or you can also use black even to get the same effect. I just prefer the ink because I feel like it. It gives a richer black, and so, um, that's why I use it. Plus, it's more of like a, um, a transparent black, too, and I really like that. But if you thin your your paint your black down with same at medium, it'll give you a transparent black as well. It just happens to be my favorite. I don't really know why I like it so much more, but I do. I think it's also easier to work with because, um, it doesn't dry as fast, and it's not a stick, so that helps me as well to kind of build a little bit more. But if you don't have black ink, that's totally fine. Just use your acrylics, and that will work Great. You don't need Matt medium to thin them down. You can also offended them down with water, your acrylic paints. I mean, you see how that's taking it, too? Just a whole new level with that black around the edges. I just love that. I love the way dark in these edges up just a little bit more, and then we will call a good 9. Create Rich and Textured Backgrounds: Class Wrap Up: Okay. This is the finished background, um, for a plethora of possibilities for a finished art piece.
