About This Class

I created a unique way of offering prints of my original sold artworks that are water resistant, ready to hang, textured and each have a one of a kind value. By the end of this course, you'll know exactly how to do the same thing with your art prints and be able to create your own version of these prints which are unique and valuable, based on your original artwork.

This class is geared toward artists who are interested in offering prints of their original artwork that set them apart from the traditional standard print, by offering something that is unique and special with a handmade look and feel.

Prior experience or someone to assist with cutting plywood is helpful, but you can also use pre-cut art boards as an alternative. Other than that, we will be using acrylic and enamel paints, some gel mediums and some simple tools. The types of paints you use are entirely up to you, but I'll outline what I've found to work best for me.

1. Intro Video What To Expect: Ola. I'm Rafi, and I'm about to share with you a secret technique that I developed in creating my own artist enhanced prints of my work, things that I could create myself. I created a unique way of offering prints of my original sold artwork that our water resistant readyto hang textured and each have a one of a kind value to them. By the end of this course, you'll know exactly how to do the same thing with your our prints. So you could create your own versions of these prints, which are unique, super valuable and based on your own original artwork. I'm gonna walk you through the process, step by step and also talk about best practices and methods that I've created in order to get the best results for these pieces. I'm also going to talk about how and when and why you should probably tweak it so that you could really give it your own personal touch. Now this class is geared towards artists who are interested in providing prints but aren't happy with just a standard flat print. They want to provide something that separates them from the traditional standard print by offering something that is unique and special, with a handmade look and feel. The only thing required for this class is that you already have some artwork that is available to print up for yourself and some kind of woodworking technique. Unless you're willing to buy some boards, there is an alternative to that other than that will be using acrylic and enamel mediums and some simple tools and some other acrylic gel mediums. To be honest with you, the type of paint that you use doesn't really matter. But I will outline the class with the paints that have had the best results for me. As we progress to the class, I'll talk a little bit about my experience with Prince as a professional artist, as well as why I decided to create these prints in this specific way and the journey that led me to finally create these prints. And I can't wait to have fun with you creating some Rafi style prints, and I really can't wait to see what you create once you learn these techniques in this lesson. So enough talk, any talk, let's get right into it. Shall we 2. The Project: So first thing is, first, here is an introduction to my prince. I have different sizes here, As you can see, um, and this is what I'm gonna be working on today and showing you guys are the bigger ones, such as this one here. I actually have this printed out at a print shop on our paper. You could print these out yourself and do all this work of yourself without having to rely on a big print shop. Of course, unless you have a bigger printer, if you have a large scale printer than you could definitely do all the steps on your own. Her bigger ones. I use bigger pieces of wood, but we'll cover that in the materials section. The project them I don't want you to work on is to pick an image of one of your old pieces of art, maybe something that you already make prints off and choose an image that has, um, thick lines that has, like darker lines, use an image that is maybe one of your best sellers, or maybe one of your favorite pieces, that the original piece had a lot of texture to it, because then I'll be showing you how to be able to add that texture in that piece in of itself. So this is pretty much what the final product is gonna look like. You're gonna have a nice, vivid image. You're gonna have a background frame, which you can always add to that frame and make it more frame like if you want to. I choose not to. You'll be able to add your own unique touch to have your single piece. So that's one of things I'm looking forward to when you guys share your project with me on . And then, of course, all these pieces will be ready to hang. For the purposes of this lesson, I'll be working on a smaller piece, but also be showing some footage of me working on some of the larger pieces. So I'm sure you had a work on bigger pieces and the smaller pieces. There is a difference in the size of the wood that I use, and obviously I'm able to print thes out myself versus printing out these larger ones. And like I said, if you have a large scale printer than it doesn't matter much. But there is a slightly different technique to doing the larger ones than there is to doing the smaller ones. So in the next video, I'm gonna go over all the materials that we use to create these prints. So, yeah, See you there. 3. Materials Things You'll Need And Why: All right, So we're gonna discuss the materials that you're gonna need to work on this project. Now, one of the main materials is obviously the board that the piece goes at here to. I use quarter inch plywood that I'm able to cut, that I buy it hardware stores and I'm able to cut Thies to size. Now, you could use quarter inch plywood, birch, or you could use art board any kind of hard surface. To be able to do this, it should work the same now for the painting. I do use the grains of the wood in order to accent the piece. As you could see with a lot of these pieces the way that it is on this side, it's just a dry brush that goes on there. Um, you can do that. You could not do that. I'm just going to show you the process in which I do things. And obviously you could tweak that formula as much as you want in order to make this your own thing. So for the smaller pieces up to about this size, which is an eight by 10 I usually just go with the quarter inch thick board, it looks aesthetically pleasing. Anything smaller than that and about that size works well on 1/4 inch board. But for the larger ones, I tend to go with 1/2 inch and 1/2 inch. Just looks really nice up to about 24 by 36. If you're able to go that large, I generally don't go any bigger than that because you also want to take a look and make sure that the wood is not being war. So some side notes on this make sure that when you're buying the wood that you take a look at war Pidge to make sure that it's not warping. Thea other thing that you want to do is take a look at the weight. That's one of the reasons I used the birch, because it's a very heavy duty and flat surface. Very beautiful, and it's not as heavy. The other thing that you're gonna want to make sure if you're buying this because it is plywood, you want to smell the wood. If it has a somewhat barn, uh, how dung smell to it, then don't buy what that means. Is that the glue that's holding the wood together has not adhered completely. And so it's sending off these gases, and it's just the smell is not gonna go away. So don't buy, and he plywood that has that barn cow dung Smell to it because it's not. It's not nice, and you obviously don't want to sell a piece like that, somebody and then they open up their box or they open up their package and it just smells like cow dung and smell makes their house smells. Make sure that you keep an eye on that. Make sure that it's not warped, because that will be a pain in the butt for them once they buy it and make sure that it doesn't smell like cow Patties. The other thing that I use is flat blacks enamel spray paint. I like using the flat black because it gives it a nice even coat and it's flat. So any glues in any medium that I use on their will and here really well, the other thing you're gonna want is a general purpose spray adhesive. There is a reason why you spread he sieve, and I don't use the brush on stuff which will cover in the lesson when we get to that point . But one of the reasons is when you are mixing, the different mediums, especially with paper, intends to shrink and stretch and you'll get bubbling into paper. When you use a general purpose adhesive, you're able to re adhesive that down for a while because this does take a little bit longer to dry, and it does remain tacky. One of the more expensive things that you're gonna want is a clear leveling gel acrylic clear leveling gel from golden. You don't need to buy this big, huge thing. They have smaller ones. The other thing is extra heavy gel gloss. It's another acrylic medium. This is more like cake batter, not cake batter cake mix. Eso. You'll be using some of that for the texture. The other thing that you will need is a staple gun, like a really good staple gun. Either one of these or one of these doesn't matter hanging wire so you could stable the hanging wiring to back. Now, the thing is that before I had hanging wire, I use just regular wire, just a thin wire and honestly, nobody's ever complained about that. So if you don't have hanging wire right now, which you probably do. But if you don't, it's not a big deal as long as you have some kind of thing in the back where people could hang it, but that you want a hammer and a hard surface so that you could pinch the staples in there . I have this block, but just a heart surface forward and then water based polyurethane. Ah, I used poly acrylic. I also use this one very thing, so I usually go with a semi gloss or gloss in the finished product. So other than that's brushes, rags, I also use this. This is a screen printing brush. I use this so that I could apply all the stuff on there because it is a print. So if you have one of these, or you just have, like, a spatula or something where you could really rub this down, I use this. That seems to work really well for me. If you don't have one just at using any kind of credit card or something to just get the surface down, that will work as well. For the purposes of this project, I'll be using ah, interior enamel paint, which you could get at the hardware store. I use Behr Premium Plus, but if you use acrylic paint, I think it should be fine. I just like the way that this covers the wood so I usually get a little sample of this. They're not very expensive, and you could pick out whatever color is that you want. Also, if you're cutting your own wood and you are not doing art boards, it's a good idea to have sandpaper so sandpaper if you need it. And finally, if you are printing these out yourself, what I recommend is that you use uh, Strathmore textured paper. This is very jets, which that's what you'll need. You'll need an inject Brynner in order to do your inject. Prince. Anybody has a question about that. I suggest they use an inkjet printer that is designed for printing out photographs, and one thing to keep in mind is as you clay, she clay stands for inkjet. So don't be scared of printing these out yourself. Just make sure that your printing them out in high quality and that's it for the materials . I'm pretty sure I didn't miss anything on from here on out. Let's create a Rafi textured, ready to hang a print 4. Size The Wood, Cut, And Prep Or Buy : so the order them in a work on is a small five by seven when you're cutting your own would , what you're gonna want to do is have it cut ah, half inch size, larger than what it is so like. My five by seven. This is a five by seven, but the actual image that goes in here is a four by six by eight by tens. Go on a piece of wood that is about 11 by nine. So that's about an inch larger. And you could play around with those dimensions, depending on what size it is and then just have your standard. Would that you cut. That is either about 1/2 inch or full inch or even two inches for the larger pieces larger than the actual print itself. So whether or not you're cutting these yourself, finding somebody to cut them or buying art boards, just keep in mind what the size of the wood is going to be. You want the wood to be slightly larger than the print itself. If you are cutting the wood yourself, make sure that all the corners air sanded because you want to get rid of all of this. You want everything to be sanded nice and flat to add any additional advice for this? The size of the wood that I usually get fits beautifully in the plastic sleeves. After all of that is prepped, you're gonna go ahead and take your black enamel flat spray paint or a black flat paint, and you are going to paint both sides of the wood and the edges. So you're gonna paint all of it nice and black. And there's a reason for this because once we put the color on there, I'll be able to show you why. 5. Prepping And Painting The Base: so your pieces should be dry enough now to work on, and the first thing we're gonna do is put the hanging mechanism on the back. So for this, we're gonna need the staple gun, which I'm gonna use the electric stapler inside of the staple gun. You've got a little over 1/4 inch staples. Then what I'm a do here is just get a little piece of wire Stay up there. Maybe about a new inch down from the top. There, there. And as you could see, it pokes out through the other side. We're gonna want to do now is go ahead and flatten. He's down. So you get a nice, smooth surface. So usually what I do is I put this on the side here. You've got a nice food surface. This is not gonna go anywhere just for measure. I've been these up. It doesn't have to be heavy duty because this isn't a heavy piece. So once that is ready, what we're gonna do is grab the paint to paint the background would Well, we're gonna want to do is take a look at the piece that needs to be printed out because we want to make sure that the background matches the painting in some way, shape or form, because this particular piece is going to have a bluish green background. I'm gonna go with this color, which is called Green Cherokee. Now, what you do is you grab this this brush and we're going to dry brush this paint on there. So first I cover the edges. I don't concern myself too much with any of the paint getting on the back here. Um, because I'm not really worried about the back of the painting. But if you want to make sure that it remains nice and black, you could always put some painter's tape along the edges here just to make sure that you don't get any paint on the back. But like I said, I don't concern myself too much with getting paint on. The back of that you're gonna do is just a quick, dry brush going up and down. And as you could see because you got the black in the background, uh, you get a nice would textured look to it, and that's what we're trying toe. Get here. I want to get this nice would textured look. What I recommend is that when you're moving your brushstrokes that your brush strokes go with the grain. But just nice and smooth, dry brush strokes. That's it for this step. Just go in and let it dry. If you're doing your own personal thing and you want to add like a variance of colors, go ahead and do that. Whatever it is that you want to do with this is totally up to you as faras. The paints that use you just want to make sure that it's light layers of paint, just a dry brush. You don't want to put anything too thick on there because you don't want your adhesive to not stick to the surface. So a nice like cope. That's what I use. I don't worry about the back, but if you want to back to not have paint on it, you could put Painter's tape on it, and that's it. So let's let that sit there and dry, and we'll come back as soon as it is 6. Self Printing Your Print : So while I'm waiting for that to dry, I am going to print out the image that I need. I have all my prints on a thumb drive, so I'm going to go through that thumb drive and see if I could find the print. Print is for Angel Mermaid, and then what I do is I will right click, Go to print and I have a cannon. M. G 2100 Siri's Printer. It is a photo printer, so I have this set on high quality. The paper is Matt photo paper, even though that's not what the photo paper is. But I just like the way that the print lines looking there, I do the four by six. Now. This would be a waste of paper if I just print out one image. So what I'm gonna do is print out two of them, and it's that simple. I know that there's a lot of confusion when it comes to prints. In a lot of times. US artists, we pay a lot of money for prints, but the fact is that G clay actually means inkjet, and as long as you have a good inch up printer. You should be fine. Just something that is designed to print pictures than you will be fine. The simple fact is that there isn't that much of a difference between a high quality printer that you have at home and the each of printer that they're using at the G clay places and charging you a lot of money. And as you could see, it prints out beautifully. And I've got the two images, so I only need one something. I go ahead and cut this in half here and just put this one away so that next time, if I sell another Angel Mermaid, I already have this print ready to go. Now what you're gonna want to do is leave no white on there, so cut carefully along the edge. Okay, So now, once that's cut and you only have the image there, then you could test it out and see how it's gonna look. That's gonna look freaking amazing. And what will happen is once all the mediums and varnishes and everything goes under, these colors become way more vivid. You know, when the print is actually getting at here down here, keep an eye on this. Ah, I've made that mistake several times where I put it on their upside down. And then once that's upside down. Changing this out is just a pain in the butt. So make sure that you are lined up exactly how you need. And now that that's all cut and ready to go, it's time. Food here. This in order to adhere this, we're gonna go outside for this part. 7. Sticking The Print To The Base: Okay. The reason we're taking this outside is because we don't want this to be sprayed inside because it's not now bueno to have inside your house because it adheres stuff. I suggest using like a piece of cardboard behind it. Make sure that you know which side is the top and how you're gonna put it on their spray The adhesive on the back let it sit for a little bit because that will cause it to get tacky. And while that's getting tacky, I'll say when you are working with larger pieces, this point is the point where you could really screw something up. So when you're working with larger pieces, what I suggest is you get the to upper corners where you need them to be, and then slowly peel it down. Because once this sticks, you can't you have a very limited amount of time of being able to lift it up and put it where it needs to be. But the more you do that, the more you compromise the piece itself. Okay, so this is ready to go, and with smaller pieces much easier to just kind of frame it and put it right in the center . Good. And let it stick on there. The reason we let it sit over here and get tacky is because this may move. And that's the only thing you want to make sure that doesn't happen here. We're gonna use the screen printing brush and get that nice and flat. Now, if you notice I'm holding it on one side as I'm pulling with the brush on the other side that so that this does not move or go where I don't want to. Okay, so that is now stuck to the base. I'm gonna let this sit for maybe about 10 minutes before I move on to the next part. All right, so let's let that dry and then I'll see you inside. 8. Why These Kind Of Prints: so I didn't take this time. While that's adhering out there to talk about, why was that? I decided that I was gonna do these prints, which are way more complicated than just printing something out in a printer. I've been a professional artist for about 10 years now, and it's always been an option to offer prints. I love the idea of doing handmade stuff. I love the idea of my art being textured. And there was something about my art losing something when it went from being a textured, original piece to just being a flat piece of paper, which essentially was an image. And and I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with selling prints, I'm just saying that for me personally, uh, it just didn't feel like it was enough. So I went back and forth with doing prints. I went back and forth with looking for other options, trying to find something out there that that was already a thing, and I could not find anything that just expressed what it was that I wanted to express within my prince. I wanted my prints to be somewhat originals, not just a copy of another piece so eventually I decided to just take matters into my own hands and just create something that I wanted to create create something that was based on one of my pieces but was completely enhanced, something that was based on one of my original pieces, uh, that I would be able to capitalize on the design of that piece, but yet still create something that was original and unique, something that not too many people had seen. So that's where this slowly came together through trial and error, and through a lot of mistakes and a lot of failed experiments, I was able to come up with this technique which I really, really excited about and my collectors are very excited about. They're able to purchase now different originals that still have that handmade feeling to them. But they don't have the the higher price of on original piece because essentially, they are prints. They are artists, enhance sprints. I just wanted to give you guys a little back story and how this got created. I've only been offering these prints for the last two years. It took me eight years to figure out how I was gonna put prints together that I was happy with. And I'm really happy with ease. I hope you guys enjoy creating this. I can't wait to see what you guys share. So get ready to use your artistic creative Know how? Because that's what we're about to enter the point where we get to, uh, enhance our prints the fun part. 9. Applying The Base Medium: All right, so next up, we're gonna do the acrylic medium and basically what I'm gonna uses the self leveling gel to put the medium on the surface. Here I have the self leveling Joan, this little bottle. So what I do is put a nice, healthy amount of self leveling gel on there. Basically, what you want to do is have the paper gets saturated by it. If you need to add more Atmore, don't worry about adding too much. There's no such thing. Just add as much as you can on there. Obviously, don't waste it because this stuff is pretty expensive. But don't worry about don't worry about putting too much under. And then what I do is I'll usually just kind of brush on some on the edges here. Then I have two of these. This is the one I used outside to fly in the paper. I usually don't use this one. I don't use thes intermingled, so this one's dry. It's just used to press it down. Then this one here I am going to just gently go along the top here and just flattened out that pain. And as you could see, you get some of the inks coming up, and that way you get it pulled up on the edges around it. But, ah, you're leaving your leaving that under. Don't push too hard on there because what'll end up happening is you may rip the paper. You may ruin it. Uh, so this is it now. Your base is ready. So this is this is pretty much where the magic is going to happen in the next few steps, your base is ready. You're gonna want to let this dry and not add anything to it because this is where if there is going to be any bubbling from the paper, this is where it's gonna happen. Now, that's the reason that we use the general purpose adhesive because the adhesive is not completely dry. It's not adhered yet, so it's still tacky. So if it does bubble up once this medium acrylic medium on the outside drives, you're still able to tack that onto the tacky surface. I'm gonna go ahead and put a fan on it, and that will help with the drying process, so we're not gonna need it to cure. We're just gonna need it to be dry enough to be able to add the stuff to it. So, uh, you could let it sit here and dry, and at this this rate, it should take me about 10 15 20 minutes for it to be ready for the next step. So just let it do what it's got to do, and we'll get started on the next step when it's dry and ready to go. 10. Enhancing The Print The Magic Touch: So now that the piece is pretty dry, what you're gonna want to do is look and see if there's any areas that are lifted, and if they are lifted, you can push them down with your thumb. Or you could use to squeegee again to move it down or credit card. You just want to be careful, though, because some of the paper is still a bit saturated by the medium, so you don't want to rip the paper open. You just wanna make that section at here to where it needs to. In some cases, none of that bubbling up happens, and then you're good to go just a long as you press that down and you keep it down for a bit nice and firm. It shouldn't lift up anymore, and the peace will dry, nice and flat for larger pieces. Almost every single time I do it, I'll get that bubbling up and just do the same thing. Take care of it in that way. Ah, once it dries and it's nice and flat. You could move on to the next step, which is the magic. You may have noticed that your image may seem a little bit washed out. Don't worry about that. If it happens because once the varnish goes on there, it's really gonna make those colors pop again. So it's just the the It's just a flatness of the acrylic medium. So don't worry about that for this section. Now, what I'm gonna do is I'm going to enhance the print. And honestly, this part of the section is totally up to you for this particular print. I'm gonna be using the clear self leveling gel. If you want. Teoh, add a little bit of color to that some acrylic paint you can if you want to enhance certain things or you want to add details to it. I'm also gonna be using the heavy gloss medium now. Like I said, this is all up to you. The reason that I use the heavy gloss medium in this section and a self leveling jealous because I'm adding texture to it. In some of my pieces, I will add a little bit extra detail in the background, and like I said, it's all up to you. Whatever it is that you want to do here, just do it. What I do recommend is that use acrylic medium because this is an acrylic base. So with this, I'm not looking at painting. I'm looking at adding texture. So that's what I am doing here. Just adding a little bit of texture to it. And trust me that in this part a little bit goes a long way. You don't need to add a whole bunch of texture to it to make it stand out. Just a little bit of texture to the surface is going to make it really stand out. Now, as far as pricing these prints, remember that any additional stuff that you're doing to it, you are adding onto the price because you're adding a handmade artistic touch to it. All of this is original work that's going up, even though you're basing it out. One of your old prints, the heavy gel medium, acts a little bit like cake icing, so that's how you're gonna treat it. You don't really painted on there. You just kind of move it around with your brush. And once again, once this dries, it's gonna dry, nice and clear. So that's what you got to keep in mind when you're putting the sun, your pain to now for this piece. I'm just going with it clear on here because I'm just looking for the texture. But like I said before, if you want to add color to it, you can just remember that a little bit goes a long way when you're doing this process. Now, what I'm doing here is a mixing the self leveling with some of the heavy jelled medium, just so I could easily move it around and get the desired result that I want for the texture and that's it. That's all I need for this particular piece. There are some pieces that a little bit more involved. Like I said, there are some pieces where I might add something to the background with paint. I might do a textured paint. I may do some drift texture, but with this piece this is all it needs, and this thing is gonna come to life. So let's wait for this to dry, and then we'll move on to the next step 11. Signing And Varnishing Your Piece: you're good to go. So no, it is going to be time to sign this. So luckily, the hook is on top here. I already told you guys warn you guys to make sure that this isn't upside down. The simplest way that I've found to sign these is to just use a silver Sharpie. Then I signed these under back with my signature and I put the Year Han there. So for a lot of these, sometimes the bigger ones especially I supply a c o a. A certificate of authenticity, but it's not really needed. Um, so that's my signature. If you want to just paint on the front, whatever way you want to put your signature on there, you go ahead and do that. And other than that, I think we are ready to put the varnish on. So for varnishing, I used a polyurethane water based stuff either poly, acrylic or very thing. I'm using very thing right now for this particular piece. I'm gonna use the semi gloss. There is a reason why I use this stuff and this is because I do shows a lot of shows, outdoor shows, and, um, honestly, when I use this stuff. It really does a fantastic job of protecting my art from rain or any other elements that might be, ah, disastrous to art. Now, thing is, when you use these, you almost get this, like, milky white coat on there. I wouldn't concern myself with that, Will. You do want to concern yourself with depending on how much texture you got in there is that you don't end up with any little bubbles. You just want to make sure that you get rid of any any little bubbles that might be forming on there. That's the only issue with this. The more text you nobles, that is it. That is it that's gonna sit here and dry. I'll put the fan back on here, and once that is dry, that is a finished piece. 12. Closing And Final Thoughts: And that's what you guys like, that it's magic. One of things that I do encourage you is to make sure that you add your own little twist to this. Make them your own textured style things by either adding paint or adding some kind of weird texture to it. There is no limitation to what you could do. The thing to remember here is to have fun when you are creating these pieces based on older pieces, you could take an old work of art that you've created, turn it into a print and then enhance it and make something else out of it that you'd like to do. These style prints have set me apart from a lot of the other artists, a show or display work in places that I display work because nobody else is doing them until now. Until you, I encourage you to please share your creation in the project gallery. I would love to see it. I would love to see what you guys do, how you enhance it, what it is that is your own unique twist to it. That would be amazing to see. So when I do shows or when I shipped these out to people. They're sitting in a plastic sleeve. Like I said before, Some of them have certificates of authenticity. All of them have my signature on the back. And one thing to keep in mind. One of the reasons I used the quarter inches that even though even though they're mounted on wood, people can frame them, you could also do additional things like you could add a little lift to this and essentially creating your own frame.
