About This Class

Welcome to my new class! This class focuses on creating engaging designs derived from hand-letterings. It’s more about a specific technique where you encapsulate your hand letterings inside a recognizable shape to enhance the overall concept. I will tell you about how you can tell a story, how you can engage and how you can create effective hand lettering designs using this creative technique.

If you have just started out or you know the basics of lettering in any form, then this class is for you. It's about the tools and techniques that can help you in the long run as a designer.

Using the learnings from this class, you can design beautiful lettering works, to tell a story which is powerful and much more engaging than just a hand lettered piece. So hit enroll and jump right in!

The tools that are required is nothing special. Any pencil for sketching and a brush pen for inking is enough to get going. But for your ease and curosity, here are few of the tools suggested:

  • Brush-pens: TomBow Dual Brushpens,  Pentel Fude Brush Pen (Bold & Medium) or Pentel Color Brush Pens. You can use any refillable or soft brushpens for practicing.
  • Pencils: Mechanical or any simple pencils.
  • Eraser.
  • Scanner.
  • Sheet: You can use the copier paper too. But try to use bleed-proof marker sheets. Or anything which can withstand wet ink of a brush-pen. For practicing anything is good.

You can use any supplies that you own right-now. These are the basic tools that you can find at any art supplies store.

1. Class Introduction: Hi. Welcome to my new class. You might know me from my previous skill share classes. This class is entitled Create engaging hand lettering designs using shape nesting I love tight. More than anything, lettering is also something related to type, so this class will specifically focus on creating engaging designs derived from Hamlet Aries. It's more about a specific technique where you encapsulate your and lettering inside a recognisable shape. To enhance the overall concept. I'll tell you about how you can tell a story you can engage and how you can create effective hand lettering designs. Using this creative concept, you can jump in and try her hands at it and get a feel about how you can turn a basic hand . Lettering work into something more engaging and more powerful in the journey. You will also learn about some creative tools that can help you on the longer run as a designer. So let's get started 2. Basic Tools & Supplies: Let's start by going through some of the tools you will need for this class, I will use a stack of blank paper A forest? Fine. You can use any regular premium quality paper. Ah, lightbox for tracing. You can use a window if you don't have this, but you can buy a light box online or you can create your own D i Y light bucks. This is my D i Y lightbox for tracing purposes. It works really well for me. A selection of various pens. Now I'm using a refillable brush pan with black ink. Ah, harder brush pen and a lead pencil. These are the very basic tools that I will use, but you can get all of these in any art store nearby. You or you can just buy them from Amazon. Next, I will use a black fine liner to clean up the brushwork. It can be really handy and refinement. And while working on small details, lastly, I will use my scanner and Mac computer to scan and then digitized the final artwork. So these are the tools that I will use, and you can use any similar tools that you own. Even just a pencil on a brush pen is more than enough for the following class. 3. Research & MoodBoard: in this video, I'm gonna cover the brainstorming and mood board methods that I use for inspiration. Usually I use Pinterest and instagram thes air Really good websites if you want to get inspired for your new design. So I start with Pinterest using hand lettering, filter and another filter of shape to narrow the search. But you can select a design that you like from the results. So Explorer various keywords By copying this and then pasting it into a document in photo shop, we can start the mood board, open the design that you like and then right, click them to select copy option, then go to Adobe Photo Shop and paste it there, exploring many different directions and then select different images that you like. The image that you will select should be according to the design that you want to create. So this process is just for giving your vision more of a meaningful direction. It's like the design. Copy it, paste it and adjusted in adobe photo shop. Your mood board will define the look of your design so you can use control and T to adjust the image and to rotate it. That's how I work with Pinterest. As a designer, you should use Pinterest. It's a super awesome tool to see other designers works and to help get inspired as well. The next I'm gonna try another search engine like Instagram. I will search here, hand lettering and see what the results come With. Instagram, you have to screen grab by pressing command. Four. You can click and drag on the image because it's not going to allow you to just save the image. File placed the screenshot into photo shop. You should be updated with Instagram. It's a useful platform for designers, especially hand lettering artists, so just follow them and keep updated with some new trends. Uh, and then lastly, I use Google. So here I'm gonna search with the keyword hand lettering in an object. Search the image open the one that you like and then copy and paste onto photo shop. But remember, these searches are to get inspired for your project, not to copy them. So I'll repeat the step and search for a wide variety of designs. Because I'm working with a Disney themed quote, I will look at this style of lettering to get inspired and Teoh understand the letter forms . So in mood board, save anything that you feel useful for your design. Okay, That looks good enough for me to start concept ing thumbnails. 4. Illustrative Visual & Mapping: In this video, I will take you through a brief introduction into mind mapping to develop a concept that relates and harmonizes with the quote. So my mapping is a technique used by designers to explore their theme or design brief in different direction. The quote is the moral of snow. White is never eat apples. So now I start thinking of objects, feelings, words that associate with this text or the story of Snow White. It could be directly or indirectly related to snow White humor, irony, Apple moral dilemma Mirror Queen story. Um, Disney Playful. I wrote all the key words that I can connect with Snow White. And in this way you can understand the subject or the theme better. And then you can relate it with other objects better. It's after brainstorming now to narrow it down to what would be most appropriate Apple playful and Disney as in type style 5. Drawing Letters: in this video, I will create letters from mind mapping stage. I have decided to use Apple as a silhouette in this project. I have chosen Apple because Aiken directly relate it with Snow White, and I feel like it's going really good for this project. So it's time for US sketches. Keeping the wrist loose and not worrying about mistakes. I start with a rough pencil outline of an apple. Be rough at this stage. It's just for an idea and how you're gonna place your letters. It's time to start fitting the letters in, so I'm breaking up each line by thinking about the shape and how many letters I can fit in a lime opposed to the next line. So, firstly, I will do it really rough. And this is just to fit the letters and to kind of get an initial idea about the look, so that seems to fit quite nicely into the shape, actually, but you can introduce any ornamental shapes you like to add. I wanna have an organic shape, so marking out the flow of the baseline will help with us. Now, I'm just gonna go over this roughly with the markers I can see it when I trace it neatly. I'm also Skilling up some letters and fixing any space issues here. So I will roughly refined shapes here so that I have less work for later stages. So that's how it is looking after rough sketching with the marker. Now it's time to make this draft a little bit meter, focusing on, um, form of the letters a little bit more. We'll also be a rough sketch so later I'll do lots of refinements to make it final. Refine your design until you are not satisfied with your design. I am doing this in the reverse, knowing that later on in the digitizing stage weaken, swap this around so this makes it a little bit easier. So if I were to start by filling in the apple and coloring in around letters, it would take a really long time. 6. Refinement Of Design: now I'm going to start an ink draft in this video. So using I refillable brush pen and directly over the pencil sketch from the previous video while refilling, always keep a tissue cloth. There's something to clean the ink from your brush pin. Otherwise it's gonna make your artwork so much dirtier. Sometimes you may have to do it again, So to avoid that, just keep something to clean it with always. Now I will start the thinking process here. I'm still treating it as a draft, but focusing on movement, direction and the weight of each letter just trying to get a consistent style and thickness . So I'm gonna work on each letter at a time, and at this stage, I'm gonna work really slow on each letter. I'll try to be, um, really precise and refined my design where I feel like it, but always maintained the consistency and style of your design keeper design brief and the theme in mind just create all your designs. According to them, there is only a subtle contrast between the thickness of the strokes, so I refer back to my mood board, looking at the Disney letters, the downward strokes They're quite thick and upward there, just slightly thinner. I will have to increase the cunning of the letters on this line in the next trace. So looking for like a similar gap between all the letters remember, this is the refinement stage. The final design is still yet to come. After drawing the letters, I will draw boundaries of the apple. So this will be really helpful for the next stage. I am thinking in this area because when we will digitize on this computer, this area will be inverted. So whatever is black will turn toe white and vice versa. 7. Final Changes: in this part, I will do the final hand lettering. So using the previous draft as the base on the light box, I will be creating my final design. The sketch that I created in the last video is behind my final sheet and using the lightbox . I'm just gonna trace it so I will be slow and study in my approach while creating these letters. It's because this will be our final design. So try not to make any mistakes at this stage. Otherwise you will have to do the sheet again. So I'm really focusing here on making no mistakes here. The thick down strokes will be thinner up strokes, and I am finishing the letters off with, like, a fat end. So I'm gonna do this with each letter, and this is the style that I chose for this project. It's derived from Disney letter form that we saw in those previous videos. It doesn't have to be an exact trace of the drawing beneath. The point is to use it more as a guide and rectify any space or lettering issues along the way. You can fix all the areas that you feel existed in the last sketch. So if you are new to brush pen lettering, you can check out my other classes where I've covered all the fundamental topics on hand lettering. I'm not gonna cover them here because this is more of an advanced course. So I am really focusing on the space here. Between the lines and the letters, everything should fit together like a puzzle. Although focusing on letters is more important to also look at the negative space. So, in this way, I'm gonna create my final design. In a project like this, it is important that you maintain the flow of shape that you choose. The letter and shape that you are creating, uh, should look compatible together. You should choose your theme style in a way that both should complement each other but not distract each other. Okay, so I am not happy with the two peas, But that's okay. I'll fix it on the computer. So that's how it looks. After all the refinements, you can see it here how it improved after the last stage. Now I'm gonna quickly draw the apple separate so that it's easier when tracing on the computer. And then there will be two different elements. So here are the two final pieces. Time to get digital, and in the next video, I will start digitizing it. 8. Vectoring: starting the digitizing now, so I will create a new document. It will be a four portrait, and I think that will be fine for this project. But you can create new document by going to file menu and then choose new art board option . Or you can use shortcut control and n I'm using to our boards one for the apple and then one for the letters. First, I'm gonna trace the apple. I'm just gonna go with the default live trace. This is pretty straightforward in terms of contrast between the letters black and the white background and then hitting expand for both. Now I will select and delete all the nodes that I don't need. So you compress command and why to show any straight points to delete it is outlined mode and here you can find any nodes which you want to delete. So, using the direct selection tool, I select the white and go up to select the same fill color and press delete. So just left with the black Now next, I will smooth the design. So go back to normal mode, select the design and start smoothing it. Smoothing design will give me a human look to the design. It is to add more smoothness to the design. So now I'm gonna zoom in and refine the letters. Using a combination of direct selection and the smooth tool, I can also simplify the paths. Then, using the direct selection tool on holding option and shift, I can select just the inner path of these shapes. And I only want the exterior forms. I can delete these so we have the silhouette that we wanted. And now I'll copy the text over the apple, making it white so I can lock the apple in place so I don't alter it by pressing command and to, and you can adjust at according to the shape of the apple. Even if you can move, rotate each letter according to the apple silhouettes, and now I can move letters around. More on the letter should be evenly and distributed here. I'm just evening up spaces here and sizes to fill the apple as letters air. Now fine. I will simplify the apple by simplifying the path to 98 to 99%. I can get more refined letters quickly that way, so go to object menu then path menu and then simplify option. Here you can have different options. You can check which works best for your design and click on OK, but before you do that, always preview the results. I think now it's looking fine. Just a little more refinement will be required. You are always free to make any changes that you feel make your design better. So in Adobe Illustrator, you have all the tools required to work on. So I'm happy with the design and in the next video, I will finish it. 9. Final Touch: Effects & Texture: Okay, now here. I'm going to expand the artwork further, adding color and texture. Using the two images above, I will create a color palette using colored drop tool, making a box and dragging. Holding option will copy it now by pressing command and D so little. Repeat the last action of copying with the same distance by using the eyedropper. I'm looking for a variety of colors, from thes to contrast ing images. So this is one of the ways that I choose color. You can also use online resource is to make a palette as well. Now, in the swatch palette, I select all unused colors and delete and then select add all used colors in the same drop down, adding my swatch selection. I can save this to bring into other programmes by selecting saved Swatch library. The next I will convert both into complex path, so go to object menu, then choose compound path and then make. Now I need to subtract the text from the apple now. So in the Pathfinder I select both objects and click minus front. In this way, we have hope in the apple, and if you want, you can use this for different effects. So next I will create a background and give color to it. Select rectangle tool and add olive green from this watch. And next I will add color to the apple. So try different color combinations. See which one looks the best. I'm just trying different combinations, and I feel like this looks the best as it gives a good color contrast. After experimenting with colors, I will now bring this into photo shop, adding my swatch selection. I'll copy each element from Adobe Illustrator and then pieced it as a smart object in Adobe Photo Shop. So smart object that's the best option to choose if you were copying something from Adobe Illustrator to Adobe Photoshopped. It's so dynamic and nature next I will export swatches. So for that, go to Swatch panel. Then choose Save Swatch Library as an S e. Save it where you want Teoh and now you are ready to import the Swatch panel in Adobe Photoshopped. Now, selecting a color for both the foreground and background. I will make a Grady int background. You can use Grady and Tool for that. Try different Grady and combinations. Next, I will add noise, so go to affect menu and select noise. You can experiment with different effects. I am using noise because I'm not looking for a clean style here. I want to add texture to the apple. After placing my texture, I want an increase contrast by adding a selective color adjustment layer making white whiter and black blacker. All then merge these together, flattening the layer. So now I make a selection via color range, isolating the dark tones, and I'll save this selection and save the apple selection to. So next I will go to select menu, then choose load selection option from here. All load saved selection and click on OK. The selection is then loaded, and then next, I will create a new layer with this selection and change its color. So in this way I will have color texture, which I will use in my design, so duplicate this fill a few times to increase its exposure and merge the layer. Now I can load my apple type selection and make a mask on my texture. In this way, you can add texture to your design and to finish the art off a lot. A couple of adjusted layers to increase contrast and saturation. But you can experiment with different effects in adobe Photoshopped to 10. Class Project: For this project, you're going to design a hand lettered artwork using concept of shape nesting. You can choose any theme dimension style you want. This class is all about understanding this new techniques, so use the tools and techniques taught in this class. Try and experiment with different shapes and different styles. Try different ways to digitize your artwork. The illustrate of hand lettering artwork that you will create should be according to a specific theme or look so share your projects in the project section. The delivery bols of the project arm images showcasing your selected theme. Your mood board, um concept thumbnails, refinement sketches, final design and then, lastly, the final artwork. After digitization process, you should add at least one texture to your artwork. I would love for you to share your project so that everyone can see it like it and then give their feedback on them accordingly. I'm excited to see your chosen theme, your design and your final artwork. This project is a great way to practice and strengthen your basics.
