About This Class

Use your imagination and creativity to apply tried and true lessons for launching a successful startup to your own career. Jenn Tardif, Product & Marketing Manager for Adobe, formerly Head of Partnerships for Behance and Sr. Marketing Manager for the Drake Hotel, will lead you through a few simple exercises that will result in a helpful career plan. In this 45-minute class, you’ll begin to see your career with a fresh perspective and commit to a plan that aligns with your hopes, dreams and values. This class is perfect for creatives who are just starting out, or itching for a change. No prior knowledge or experience is required! And by the end, you’ll have everything you need to begin building your dream career.

1. Welcome: Hi, My name's Gen Charter and I'm a product marketing manager at Adobe, based here in New York State. I've worked at a small start up big companies and pretty much everything. And when I'm not at work, I'm usually practicing for teaching yoga, and my entire career has been motivated by helping creative people succeed. So today we're going to borrow some tried and true lessons from launching a startup and apply them to building your dream career. Although you may think you already know exactly what your dream job is, having a plan can prevent you from getting stuck along the way. It can help you break down bigger goals in tow. Bite sized tasks and a simple exercise like this one can even give you the confidence that you need to be successful. 2. Getting Started: Theo. Over the years I've met so many brilliant and talented creators. The work that they make is amazing. But when it comes to their careers, many of these same brilliant and talented artists aren't side aside. So I started digging a little deeper and kept getting the same feedback statements like I just want to make things. I'm not a planner or I love being creative. But business isn't my thing. Or, worst of all, self promotion is selling out. And if you know someone like that, or you are that someone I have bad news, you're already in business. If you're freelance designer, you're literally running a small business. And if you're in house or part of a creative team, you're in the business of relationships and regardless of your situation, as silly as it may sound your in the business of yourself. So I invite you to spend a few minutes today treating your career like a new business, a start up, if you will, and will craft a plan for your dream career. 3. Project: Create Your Career Plan: in this class will go through the steps to create an effective career plan, and in the end you'll have an outline that you can revise and revisit as you progress. With the help of my colleague and Adobe, designer Alison McGrath will share you some visual examples to get your wheels turning. But ultimately it's your career. So you know best what to put in your plan before moving on to the assignment. Please have some paper, pencils, markers and any other creative tools that you'd like so that you can take notes, Draw and capture your ideas in an imaginative way. By the end of this class, you'll have crafted a plan for your dream career. This will include a mission statement, mood board or a style guide, a list of experiments and some ideas for self promotion. For the purpose of this class, we invite you to think of your career like a startup. And in true start up fashion, that means wearing a few different hats. Four to be exact 4. Be Your Own CEO: in her first exercise, We invite you Teoh. Pretend you're the CEO of your startup, and as the CEO, it's your job to keep the company focused on its underlying mission and ensure that you stay true to your values as you scale and make business decisions along the way. So start by capturing your answers to the following questions. What's your idea of a dream career? What are a few things that you want to be known for? How would you like other people to describe you? Where do you hope to be 357 years from now? How does what you dio help people? That's an important one. And lastly, what is what you dio matter? And if you get stuck along the way, you can always ask a friend or colleague who knows you well to help answer and then incorporate the words that they use to describe you. Then you'll turn your answers into a mission statement. You can pause and work on this for a few minutes, but know that it should be a short one or two sentence max bio. That clearly explains who you are and what you dio, and this is different from simply defining what it is you dio. This also includes what you want to dio. So if you're mostly designing at the moment, but I hope to do more art directing in the future, make that your mission statement. Once you're happy with it, you can distill it down to a list of key values the same way that a company might have a manifesto for their users. Things like creativity and innovation. Making money so that you could be financially stable, working with clients who are both collaborative and respectful and making beautiful work. If that's what it's important to you. This will become your check list when deciding whether or not to work with a new client, take on a new project or even a new position. There are no wrong answers here, but know that this will eventually become your check list when deciding whether or not to take on a new client project or even position 5. Be Your Own Creative Director: in her second exercise, I invite you to play creative director. This one's fun. Here you can close your eyes and visualize your dream career. Then we'll ask you to capture the way that looks and feels with a mood board. So if you're an illustrator and a lifelong goal is to land the cover of The New Yorker, put that on your mood board. And if you're hoping to have a better work life balance in the future, put a picture of your kids or your partner on your mood board to symbolize a career that allows for more family time. And definitely don't worry about creating a masterpiece here. It's more important that you capture the things that are important to you with whatever symbols, stick figures or even cut outs and photographs that work. And if creating a mood board is too daunting, you might consider creating a style guide instead. This can include yes column, which shows work that you've created that you're proud of, or that you aspire to create, and the no column work that you know you don't want to do again, or clients that you're not super interested in working with knowing What you don't want is just as important as knowing what you dio. So spend a few moments now using whatever medium you prefer to get some visuals down on paper. 6. Be Your Own Developer: way have our idea, and we know what it looks like. Next up. We need to build it and make it real. That's where 1/3 role comes in. You get to be your own developer. This is all about experimentation and iteration. So if one of your career goals was to do more public speaking or teach a class, start small. Begin by volunteering Teoh speaking meetings or lead them. Teach friends and family first and enroll in classes and workshops like this one, then assess how it goes and adjust as needed before going live. Think of these experiments like you're staging environment to borrow a developer term where you can test your ideas out and have a bit of a safety net. So spend a few moments now creating a list of experiments that you're willing to commit to . Thes should relate to your mission statement and list of values and what you pictured for yourself in the future. And as you create your list, please be mindful of having a fixed mindset versus a growth mindset. That's the difference between saying things like I'm bad at math, full stops versus I'm working on my math skills And like a developer, don't be afraid to fail. If something doesn't work out, maybe you remove it from your plan. No big deal for continued tweaking it until it does. 7. Be Your Own Marketing Manager: in her last exercise, I invite you to play the role of marketing manager. And even though I know self promotion can sometimes be thought of as a bad word, this is arguably the most important role of all. Full disclosure. I'm totally biased because I am a product and marketing prison. But here, reality, This is where you get to take your vision in your real life experiments and share them with the world can find like minded people to collaborate with. Start letting people in on your ideas, like your colleagues, even your clients and direct manager. If you have one and then make them public by updating your online profiles, start incorporating the same language that you highlighted in your mission statement and your values into online personas like your V. Hance portfolio, your linked in page your Twitter, instagram, Facebook, whatever you use and even in conversation. So when you're speaking to your boss or a new client, going back to our earlier example, start using words like art direction to describe yourself in your role. Commit to your plan by letting people in on your goals and don't feel like you have to accomplish this all on your own or overnight. It's like going to the gym. When you have a buddy, you're more accountable, and that way you're more likely to succeed. And lastly, a gentle reminder to be authentic. Throughout this process, you can share works in process and let people in on the trials and tribulations of what you're working on and working towards. That's more memorable than someone who pretends to have all the answers anyway. 8. Closing Thoughts: you did it, I hope. And now you should have a plan for obtaining your dream career. I'm having a plan can be incredibly empowering If and this is in true startup fashion, you invest in it, which means putting as much time and energy that you already pour into your creative projects into your own career. Lastly, know that this is a living, breathing thing. You can revisit it and make changes as often as you like and as your priorities shift. Thank you so much for watching.
