1. Introduction: Hi, I'm doing jokingly Ryland in Illustrator out of San Diego, California In today's course, we're gonna talk about how to make collage inappropriate. Now, collage is usually a physical medium that uses cut paper. But I'm gonna show you how I emulate that collage look in a digital program, the first thing we're gonna do is look at it some inspiration. Some other artists collage and kind of take a look at how they do what they dio. Then we're gonna pick subjects matter, create sketch makesem digital papers, cut those digital papers and piece together our illustration. You can follow along with me and make a French bulldog, or you can pick your own subject matter, and then that will be your ultimate project at the end of the course. So if you're ready to go grab your AIPAC your apple pencil and procreate and let's get started 2. Collecting Inspiration: The first thing we're gonna do before we get into making our own collage illustrations is to look at other people's that we are inspired by and that we're drawn to. So the best way to do that is to hop on Pinterest and make a board full of clutch, this one's mine thes air all illustrations that I think are very visually interesting. And then I want to know more about how they got the results that they got. I'll link this to the show notes so you can check it out as well. But I highly encourage you to make your own. So a couple things I want you to notice about collage is that, um, even one. They come in all different colors and moods and feelings, right? It's a very creative and very visually interesting medium. Uh, this can be used for Children's illustration. For editorial illustration. It could be a mixed media situation Service pattern design. I mean, really, it can be used for pretty much any type of illustration, and it's going to be visually interesting. The other thing I want you to notice is that, um a lot of the mood comes from color palette. So when picking the colors that you want to put together just like any other illustration, color plays an extremely important role. So when you're looking at the illustration, do you like pay attention to color? And if that's what's attracting you as well, a couple other things The shapes and clash tend to be very, very simple in this illustration. Here the trees are just circles and rectangles. Where the visual interest comes from is that these shapes are not perfect, which makes them interesting, and they also have texture. And whether that's texture from paint or pastel or maybe colored pencil, or whether that's texture from being a patterned paper, they there is always some sort of visual interest, and what you'll notice is well, is that all of these colors are not the same color with the same texture, right? There's a lot of different things going on. Um, the uh, cuts on these branches or not perfectly straight right? There's some Ben to them, and they're just are very interesting. Another thing to notice is that the characters are very simple. There, just shapes that can be cut out. These bears were basically a couple circles put together. And the same is true for most of these illustrations. As you, Aziz, you look through them. Um, well, grab this one. These houses, for example, are very simple. They just look like a basic flat houses that, um maybe a kid would draw, but because they're cut out and because they have all these beautiful textures and interesting details and these details are made with, um, this looks like colored pencil to me on the colors air vibrant and interesting. And the papers are different. Different patterns like graph paper and regular paper. And ah, spotted paper. Maybe, Uh, that's what makes that's what gives that that visual interest. Okay, so go ahead and look at, um, some illustrations that you're drawn, Teoh. And take a look at how you you think that is done. And then we'll get into We'll get into our project 3. Sketching: So I've decided for this project in this class I am going to make a French bulldog because they're adorable. So I just put French bulldog into into Google. And these are the images that came up. And I want to find something that has a full body shot on something. That's pretty simple. So I think actually, this, um, 1st 1 here is great. So I'm gonna grab that. Mm. And I'm going to take a screenshot of it, and I'm gonna put it in my procreate canvas, and all I'm doing here is just kind of trimming off the edges. Okay, so here's my reference photo. And I could have, um, done this by just keeping biopsies by keeping the Internet on a split screen here and then having this on the side. But sometimes I just would rather have it in my actual document. Um, OK, so this document here is an eight by eight square. You can use whatever size you want to use. It does not matter. I'm just gonna grab black, um, pencil here, going to sketching 60 pencil. And I'm going to sketch out this, um French Boldak so you can start detailed if that's what you normally dio, or you can start with shapes, collages all about just really simplified shapes. So if we can break this up, India's many shapes is possible. All the better. So if I start Munich forming a different layer here Oops, OK, so if I start with his head and it's kind of I'm gonna say it's a little bit boxy and I could make this a circle, I could make this square, um, but a simplified shape for his head and then, um, this shape. And if you think about it as I'm coloring, I'm sorry. I'm cutting out paper. It might help you simplify these shapes. So here's another shape. The body here. Here we go. Okay, so this right here is our other shape. Okay, we have a leg here that's just gonna be, like almost like a rounded rectangle. Um, another shape here that will put behind his body. Okay. And then this leg would be another sheep circle and can't see his tail. So maybe we'll leave the tail out of the equation. Um, And then, of course, these awesome, brilliant years There's a little more rounded on the top, huh? and feel free to exaggerate anything that needs to be exaggerated. Obviously, these ears are like the highlight of the French bulldog so they can be exaggerated. And then I would also do his, um, snack here has a shape. Um, we can add these details if we want. There we go. That that's what our French bulldog is going to look like now because I made his body so big, I think I also I want to make his head bigger. So here's the time to just make adjustments. I'm just gonna select that and adjust as I go. There we go. Okay. And obviously his head is oversized with this is a exaggerated peace. And maybe because his head is, um, square, I want to make his muzzle square. This is where you can kind of. You just have so much leeway. Teoh, Make this however you want to make it so if you're doing a French bulldog, you can follow my lead, or you can create different shapes or however you want. And then if you're making a different animal kind of approach it the same way, we just approached it where you're just looking for all the different body parts and breaking those down into shapes, because that's what we're gonna piece together 4. Creating Papers: Now that we have our sketch, we can start making our papers, and we're gonna make those the same way we would we would on physical paper, paint textures and patterns. And, um, we're going to do the same thing in different layers. So every layer that we create is gonna be a new paper. And just think to note I added a little spot here for visual interest in all spot here is Well, um, e think I'm gonna stick with natural colors for for the dog. But if you want to, you know, make your dog or whatever it is that you're making, you know, green or blue or whatever, That's totally cool. You can get crazy with it if you want, so I'm going to create a new layer here, and this is gonna be my first paper. I'm also going to create a new palette, and I can name that a French bulldog, and I won't. I'm going to just keep my, um, dog almost white. So my first put that in my palate. Um, my first paper I'm gonna create I'm in this new layer to create my paper. I'm going to go into painting um, and usually I like to start with the base of wash or watercolor because it just gives the paper a nice coat of this color, and it's very faint, uh, color here. So now that I've got coverage, I'm going to start adding some some texture. This is where you're really going to be able to individualize your papers, whether you're more drawn to fund patterns or just like painted organic type textures. This is where you can really play around. I have certain brushes that I am drawn to, and then I and then I like more than others. I still have some exploring that I can do is well, but but really just play around with this. So I'm gonna go ahead and grab my dry brush. I'm gonna, um I think there's a little bit darker of a color and this stain, so Okay, cool. And I'm just gonna start making marks on my paper, so I'm gonna treat this the same way I would just regular paper. I'm gonna turn my sketch office. It doesn't distract or anything, and I don't know how well you're gonna be able to see the marks that I'm making here. But when you start doing on on your paper, you're gonna start to see it. You're gonna also play with the opacity, uh, so that you can make something a little bit more faint or all the way up so that it's a little bit more deep. Uh, driver, she was a good one. Um, stucco is pretty interesting as well. Some really nice texture in there. You'll notice I don't do the whole paper the same cause. I want there to be differences throughout the paper. And I want there to be different colors throughout the paper as well. So I'm gonna keep adjusting. Not too. Uh, let's go. I also really like oil pastel and artists cran as texture makers. It's Grab that and this is oil pastels. It almost looks like watercolor paper. A little bit artist cram. It's good to on this is becoming a really, um, a really nice textured paper. Um, drawing has some neat ones as well what I do want. And so just go ahead and play with all different types of textures. You can't do this wrong, right? All of these are going to create these really interesting fun. Um textures every now. Okay, um, the one thing I do want to show you is that actually, let's do with the new paper. So we've got one paper. Let's That's gonna be our dog's body color. Uh, let's add another. I actually think this is getting a little bit too dark, so I'm gonna go back toe white and use that go roll, you know, here and just keep it a little bit later. All right. Um, what's gonna combine those? I didn't mean for this to be on different layers. And now I'm gonna make a new paper here. I can make asses many papers, as I want with I could make more of those for the dog body color as well. I would recommend it actually, so that you can pick your favorite one. But just for sake of of time, I'll just keep making different colors. So, uh, the spots I'll probably want to be, Maybe it a deeper, darker brown. Here. Let's put that into our palette so you could go back to it. I'm gonna start with, um, washer water. Color doesn't matter. I think I mean wash just to get some coverage. You also do not have to start that way. That's just my preference. Um, and I think I want to do more of a pattern, so she would to do there. So there's a couple different. Um, these are really cool textures to under artistic, but, um, textures have some really interesting ones. Uh, like graph paper. Almost actually, exactly like graph paper. You can have your spots look like graph paper. Um, you could have your spots look like decimal points. It's pretty. Q. It's pretty cool. Uh, and you can see there's, uh, depending on how hard you press or don't press, you can affect the opacity of this one. Now, what I would recommend that you don't do is pick your pencil up and then go over it again because it's gonna mess with, uh, you're That hurts my eyes. It's gonna mess up your pattern. Okay, What you can do once you have that pattern down is adds some texture on top of it, right? So let's say it's grab like a painting texture like this. If you had that on top, it's gonna make it even even more interesting, right? So you can mix patterns with, um with textures. Uh, textures is gonna have some cool patterns. Um, Vintage is gonna have some cool patterns. I think this one's really fun for groups for paper. Okay, so there's that we could use other spots or maybe in the ears even. Um, let's see all of these actually look really fun and interesting. Newsprint can use that. Um, it just depends on what, um, what your preference preferences are. Okay, I would scuffed ease up a little bit now and on, Um, there is, Let's add some industrial industrial has some really interesting textures as well. So it's at some, um, textures on top. A swell. Okay, All right. So there's a paper that will have a lot of options with Let's add another layer and let's grab a pink for maybe the inside of the years like a light pink here and go back to my painting. It's his watercolor this time and gets coverage. And maybe, let's go half, uh, texture and half print can see. Uh, sure you may not. Um, what we end up liking cool. You'll notice that I tend to go back to some of the same brushes, but, um, yes. Around it's fun. Sometimes I forget where the patterns are. Oh, flicks is a good one, too, Um, sometimes difficult with their cause. I don't really use them. Except for when I do this. Um, I find that the patterns in here are, um, are this is the best use for them. It's pretty cool. This one's pretty neat to it. Almost looks like fingerprints. That's our color. It when he used, though different, that may palette here. Ugo Mm. Let's try Honey Eater. Let's see. No, I don't like that. Let's go with going back to that and see what you think. Yeah, that's cute. It's subtle. Maybe we'll like that for the years. We'll see. Okay, so sometimes I do things half in half so that I can experiment or I just do a whole page, um, one way and a page another way, and then go from there. But I think we have enough to get started here. So, um, now that we have our papers, we will get into cutting our papers 5. Cutting Papers: So for cutting our papers, we're gonna start with our sketch, and we're going Teoh, grab one of our papers and put our sketch on top of it. So we're gonna start with, um, our dog body since its, uh, the most cutting that we need to dio. I'm going to duplicate this paper in case I do something toe alter it. I have a spare down here, have the original, um, And what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna cut out all my different shapes. So for the body, I have 12345678 different shapes that I need to cut out. So we use my selection tool. I'll start right here on the body on I'm gonna, uh, use my selection icon, swipe with three fingers and copy and paste it. I'll go over here and I have my body now. My original papers still intact because I used copy and paste. If I were to use cut and paste, it would literally cut it right out. I'm gonna go back to this paper and I'm gonna keep cutting out all my individual dog pieces here. Dog body pieces go back toe a regional paper and then do it again eight times. Okay, so now that I have all my pieces, Aiken, turn off my original paper so I can see what they all look like together. It's also turn off that sketch to see. So because of these papers with the same, um, come from the same piece and they're the same color. They're gonna blend together a little bit more than I would like. So what I'm gonna do is go through and put Alfa lock on for each one of these pieces, and then I'm going. Teoh had a little bit of texture and add a little bit of color to each of them so that I can different and she differentiate them. Okay. I can also put these in order to I know my dog body is gonna go underneath. Um, this leg, Let's see what shun? Yep. That's the one I want that one also going to go. That's gonna go underneath my dog body. The other one is gonna be on top. The other one is gonna be on top, actually going. I just put the years together for sake of simplicity. Um, this is the snout so that's gonna go on top of the face so that all should be in order. We can start with this now. Here. Um and I'm gonna grab a texture. Let's go into it's going to painting J brushes. Great. Let's grab that brown color. Because that muzzle might be a little bit darker. Right, Then the rest of the body and scrub something else as well. Yeah, some stucco there could be cool my Passy down a little bit. Okay. And now I also can trim. So I'm gonna use my eraser, and I'm gonna go into me thinking and get my technical pen. Is there gonna be kind of straight? Um, lions? You don't want me to perfect about it, but, um, we're definitely gonna have pieces that we're gonna need to trim that. We didn't cut out exactly how we wanted them. So now's a good time to do that. So I think that about does it And the more like shut corners we have in points, the more it looks like it's been cut out. So So that's why I'm saying don't get too, uh, perfect and to technical about it, because then it'll start to look a little bit too smooth, but definitely trimmed. Teoh better fit your vision. Okay, so we have a muzzle. Uh, we have a little bit more color. A little bit more interest in our in our muzzle. And now let's go to the head. So let's add a little bit of shading to these other pieces. So, um, I'm gonna go no textures, and I'm gonna go into grunge. This can be done with a lot of different brushes, but I like grunge for this, um, you can either paint directly on your piece, or you can Atalay above it and create a clipping mask so that you, um, aren't worried about ruining it. I'm gonna put a little bit of shadow around the muzzle here. A bit of just visual interest. Um, I'm gonna go to see, Does that need any? Doesn't look like it needs trimming yet. It might. Let's see, Let's turn off. I'm going to do. I'm gonna put a background color on just for the time being, because our, uh, dog is so light. So let's put on some blue here. There we go. Now we can see it a lot better, okay? And we'll change that later. But that's good for now. You can actually see what we're doing. Um, so now I'm on the head again, and I see there's a little piece here that he needed trim. So gonna go through and try many thing that needs trimming and adjusting. Um, oops. What you'll notice when you use the selection tool, Usually where you start and stop will be, like a little funky, uh, issue with it, Like over here. And so they'll just be training on all these pieces that you only do just kind of do as you go. Okay, so we have that now. It's but the ears on years air underneath. Um, I'm gonna just draw directly with me, touch with me texture here. Um, but you can create a clipping mask on these two. And I'm just gonna create a shadow shadow there to stand them apart, movies over just a little bit, this one over a little bit. Do some trimming here, sir. Weird shape I made. Um, and if you think about it, just like like, you would just keep cutting paper. Uh, it makes a lot of sense. Okay. Um so those are my ears. You have a nice little shadow tomb. Let's go to our leg Here, bring it down just a little bit. I'm gonna turn the body off so I can see, uh, where you need to trim miss this piece. Okay, trim here. Um, here. Maybe I'll go do that play. Well, they see it. Okay, maybe we'll do this one to always see it. Just clean up a little. Okay. Leg. Um, that's, um, grand. Remember, have Alfa lock on. That's why I'm ableto can do that on this leg. Same thing you could do this with, Like, any texture, this leg as well. Let's turn the body back on here so that I can now put back there in a move that laying over just a little bit. Great. Let's turn the legs off for a second so I can see how the body looks. Actually, that looks nice. Um, what's handsome shading to the body here? Just a little bit. It's in the leg stand out and said just a little bit more dynamic. Okay. All right. And maybe maybe we do that with, um, something a little bit more visually interesting. Texture wise. So maybe with, like, artistic. I don't know. We can just really Yeah, play around with what that looks like. Okay. Any adjustments of the pieces that you need to do? Maybe. I want to move this sliding a little bit and these guys a little bit. We can do that now. And sometimes when I moved things, I need toe and just, um, the colors in them. Okay, I think. Okay, so now that we have our body and we've got thes cut pieces that make make it all up, uh, let's add the details in our next section. 6. Adding the Details: in this section. We're going toe add details. So we're gonna use those other papers that we made the brown and the uhm pink, and we're gonna decide what we want our spots to look like. Can't really go wrong here. This is just fun. Um, we're definitely going Teoh duplicate this because we'll move it around a little bit and we want to keep the original. So let's see, um, let's make thes Let's make the spots really dark. It really doesn't matter, but let's do that. So I'm gonna cut out like I did before. I'm gonna actually move this below the muzzle so I can see where I want it to be. So I'm gonna cut out the little eye patch, okay? And then I'm gonna grab whips. I'm gonna grab this paper, and I'm gonna move it on top of the sketch again. Um, actually, I'm gonna move it. Let's see on top of the body. Can I see it now? Yeah, okay. And I didn't move this papered down, so it's on the body for me, and I'm going to cut out the spot on the dogs back. Okay? All right. So now I have a spot. It's a little wonky, but that's OK, because I can trim it. So I'll do that. I'm gonna put it under this leg. Okay? So that gets cut off, and then I'm gonna cut a lot. Herman, race along the dogs back here. That doesn't have to be perfect, but kind of like you cut it to fit right on top of the doctor. Good. So now we have these two spots. Pretty interesting. Um, if I didn't like the pattern that I used, I could always go in and use a different pattern that they created, cause I still have my original. Okay, um, the next thing I'm gonna dio iss add years. So let's use this pattern for the ears as well. And we're going to do the same thing. We're going to select out the ears, copy and paste them. Um, I could always just make a copy of that and put it over here, but any time you are doing clause, it's kind of nice. Teoh, cut them out individually. It will give you more of a authentic cut paper. Look. Okay, so let's turn off our paper here, and let's see how those turned out now, those were not Let's put those together. Those were not very dark. They're not showing up very well. So let me move this, um down here where they go and what I'm gonna try to do is I am going Teoh groups, uh, duplicate them, duplicate them again, and you can see they're getting darker so that I'm gonna combine them. They're still not quite as dark as I want them to be. So I'm going, Teoh, um, play with the color a little bit. Hair hue, saturation and brightness. Someone take the brightness down a little bit. Um, are you mess with saturation as well here on? Yeah, I like that better. So there we go. Now they're a little bit darker. Okay. Okay. Um, the final thing we're going to do for details is add highs in the mouth. So I draw these on with pencil. You could cut paper for those. That's totally, um, find Teoh. Uh, there is no wrong way to do this. I'm gonna grab my pencil and sketching May 6 b pencil, and I'm just gonna draw little black eye here on a little black eye here and some eyebrows and nose. I keep this all very, very, very simple. Okay? And there is my dog. Okay, I could also grab taping paper and make a tone that would be of fun detail. So let's try that. Go. Um, and the same thing happens here where it's not quite dark enough, But we can do the same thing we did with the years and, uh, and ducking it up neither by using the hue, saturation and brightness or by using Here we go, uh, or by duplicating the layer a couple times. Okay, so there is our little collage, Doug. Okay, so I went back in, and I changed that pattern paper to something that I like a little bit more. And that's why it's really important toe have a bunch of different papers to choose from. That way, if you create something that's not quite working for you, it's an easy fix to go back in and change it to a different, um, paper that you've made. So I'm a lot happier with this paper. And the last thing on the show you with the details is how to make, um, the papers just look a little bit more authentic, like they are cut paper and not like their digital by creating a shadow behind the elements so that the paper kind of stands out from the paper beneath it. Okay, so, uh, let's start with yeah, that I spot and let's put a way or underneath it and turn off the clipping mask. We don't want it to be a clipping mask. I'm gonna grab, like, close to black. I'm gonna have my opacity down pretty pretty much gonna have my 60 pencil, uh, for sketching. And I'm just gonna create a slight shadow that actually might even be too big a slight shadow right around the outside of that element. And like I said before, all that's going to do is kind of lift it off of the paper below it and give it a little bit more of an authentic feel. And you can go through with all of your pieces, uh, that are on top of other pieces and put in that little bit of shadow. Um, so I'm gonna go in, and I'm gonna do it to all the other pieces as well. And I won't show you that part because it'll take too long. But, um, next we are going to work on the background 7. Creating a Background: Okay, now that I haven't piece that I'm happy with, I'm gonna go in and work on a background so I can change this background color back Teoh White. And, um, I'm gonna work right above that background color whips. Here we go at a new layer. I can name all these two that would be more organized. And but, um, just for sake of time, I'm not going. Teoh, uh, let's start with the background color. Let's use pink. Since that's kind of an accent that we have And this time kind of looks like she'd be in, like a Victorian home, right? Um, I like doing backgrounds. If it's just like one subject that are almost look like wallpaper. So let's try that on, and you can mess with the size of this, but if I just I just What is going on here? There were, and I don't want to pick up my pencil here because if I do or if I go too far out of the bounds, it's going to start the pattern over again. And this pattern would look pretty strange if it was, um, inconsistent. Like someone did a really bad job of putting up wallpaper. All right, there's our first layer of our wallpaper. Okay, Um, I also will want maybe a color. That's lighter. Let's add another layer and let's put it under wallpaper. Uh, let's grab either quash or watercolor something that's just going to give us, um, a color here and the nights. I think that's a little bit too dark for me. I'm gonna lower the capacity just a little bit. Yeah. There we go. Okay. And then, um, let's go on top of that wallpaper. Let's grab even lighter. Almost like a white and maybe some dry brush. And, like, just gonna scratch it up a little bit. Maybe it's ah, vintage. Well, keeper here they're working with. Okay, I don't know how well you're gonna be able to see that on mine. Um, are on the video, but it's just adding a little bit of texture into into that pattern. Okay, um, now we need Let's go. Let's grab a dark color here. It's got a bunch of black, uh, and let's grab a pen. Technical pen. Um, I'm gonna put on a grid here. Um, oops. Canvas drying guide. There we go. Uh, and I'm just gonna draw a straight line across here and fill that in as kind of the floor said, Now, let's put that on top. So now our dog sitting on four in turn, are drawing guide off, Just looking for a straight line there. And then on top of that, we'll grab black and maybe a sketching pencil. Um, you know, I'm gonna resize this. Maybe I don't. Maybe it's OK if the dogs big. Um, there are a couple things that I'm not liking the. So see how you can see the line through the dog's body cause the body is OK. Um, her not opaque. Um, I'm gonna duplicate that. And yet that took care of it. The Legace. Well, no. Duplicate it, and that takes care of it. Okay, so and I'll just combine those for ease if I Mm. Okay. Yeah, that's good. So I'm thinking through things as I go, so I'm just gonna add some shading here, um, on beneath the dog's body with my sketching pencil. This is a dark floor. So that's just gonna be kind of faint there, and that's OK. And then, um, I want to make this floor just a little bit more visually interesting. So it's crab are brushing our dry brush again. And from him, put a clipping mask. No, but I'm not going to do that. I'm gonna add a layer and then make that a clipping mask. I don't know why I always do that. And I'm just gonna put some streaks in the floor just a little bit more interesting. Okay, So as much as you can, texturizing things up is gonna really make them pop in, stand out and be interesting. Okay, so now that I see this, I don't know how much I love the color of the background. I'm gonna combine all of them here. Yep. And I am going Teoh play with my re color tool. Actually, no. I'm gonna play with me. Hue, saturation and brightness tool. Um, I'm gonna see if human I can turn this into a color that's gonna make the dog, um, pop a little bit more. I see anything standing out. I kind of like green, but I don't like how that floor looks. Yeah, we're gonna suck the saturation out just a little bit here. Okay, move. Yeah, I got better. Okay. Let's go with that? Um, Anyway, you can re color. You can play, can create these backgrounds. Uh, if you I think my dog placement is a little bit off. So I think I'll go in and just select all my, oh, my dog pieces here and then resize and move them. So this is just I don't know that you need me toe show you this piece of it, but if I want to move it, I can. Right? And then I'd actually have to move the shadow to write and resize it. That's okay. Um, so there's my final piece. I've got a collage dog. I've got a background. It looks like cut paper. Um, and it's a lot of fun.
