Hi, Welcome to Cantonese 101

This course is designed for completely new Cantonese beginners who want to take a glimpse into the language as well as those who have limited knowledge of Cantonese and would like to understand more about its usage and learn new vocabularies and phrases.

Although mastering Cantonese can be a daunting task for beginners, it can be achieved through dissecting the language and learning it through a structural and pragmatic way so that it can be easily absorbed and enjoyable to learn.

That is the main goal of this training course.

As a native Cantonese speaker, I will walk you through each lesson and pronounce each Cantonese word where you can repeat after me or pause whenever necessary.

The most important way to progress in any language is through repetition, practice, and perseverance. So don’t hesitate to repeat and review the course, then take it for a spin and practice with other Cantonese speakers.

What’s Included In This Course (Scope)

This training course consists of nine lessons covering basic Cantonese words that are widely spoken within everyday conversations.

These lessons include:

              - Counting System

              - Colors

              - Pronouns

              - Directional Words

              - People

              - Time

              - Questions

              - Counter Words

              - Verbs

In each lesson, you will find the English translation; followed by the Chinese characters and the pronunciation that closely resembles English (romanization).

The reason why I chose these nine lessons to start off for Cantonese beginners is because each lesson reflects a basic structure. These structures will help you better master the Cantonese system and allow you to build upon what you learned.

It is important to note that when learning Cantonese from an English speaking perspective, you should never translate word for word. Instead, try learning it as if you were a baby trying to grasp the language for the first time.

The English and the pronunciation are only there to guide you, but you must absorb Cantonese with a clear and open mind. This is important because it will stop you from over analyzing why certain word is spoken differently than from that of your own language.

Why My Approach Could Work For You

Cantonese consists of six intonations. Although these intonations are important as different tones can change the meaning of the word, mastering it while learning new basic vocabularies can be overwhelming.

Therefore, I have designed this course to leave out the intonations so that you can focus on learning new Cantonese vocabularies without being discouraged by the added complexity of the intonations.

Since most people fail to master pronouncing Cantonese correctly anyway through learning the intonations first, this training will provide an easier approach to remove the roadblock and allow you to dive in head on.

Similar to learning how to swim, this course will essentially allow you to test the water, get comfortable with it, and then refine your skills through practice.

Therefore I recommend learning the six intonations only after you feel comfortable enough with the language, then you can use intonations to sharpen your pronunciation.

This approach has worked for many students that I teach and they find this method to be less overwhelming.

After all, babies never learned the intonations before speaking Cantonese. What helped them was through listening, so that is basically the same approach here.

By visualizing the English meaning and Cantonese words along with the romanization, you may find this learning approach to be less overwhelming and more enjoyable.

Good luck and let’s get started!

1. Introduction to Cantonese 101: Hi. Welcome to Campanis 101 I'm your instructor, Choi. I was born in Racing Canton, the capital of Guangdong and southern China, which is also the birthplace of Cantonese. It is therefore my native tongue, and I love speaking Cantonese so much that I wish more people can learn easily and make it assessable to everyone. Cantonese is a major dialect of the Chinese language, and it is widely spoken throughout major places like Cuando Hong Kong, Singapore, Macau, Malaysia and in almost every Chinatown around the world. But I know mastering it can be a daunting task for non Cantonese speakers. So I made this video with the go off, dissecting the language to make it easier to absorb and enjoyable to learn in a structural and pragmatic way. In the next video, you will find out what is being cover and not cover in order to decide whether or not this is the right training course for you. Even though learning a new language could be challenging, it should also be enjoyable, efficient and rewarding so that you can keep the momentum going. Practice makes perfect. I hope you will join us on the journey to learn Cantonese 2. What’s Included In This Training (Scope): things. Training course consists of NY listens, covering basic Cantonese words that are widely spoken within everyday conversations. The's lessons include counting system colors, pronouns, directional words, people, time questions, counter words and verbs. In each lesson, you will find the English translation, followed by the Chinese character and the pronunciation that closely resembles English. I will walk you through each lesson in pronounce each Cantonese words where you can repeat after me or pulse whenever necessary. The good news is that there will be no Chris is because the main focus is to learn by repetition and persistency. The reason why I chose thes nine listens to start off for Cantonese beginners. It's because each lesson reflects a basic structure. The structure will help. You better master the Cantonese system and allow you to use it in everyday contexts. It is important to know that when learning Cantonese from an English perspective, you should never translate, were forward. Instead, try learning it as if you were a baby trying to grab the language for the first time. The English and the pronunciation are only there to guy you, but you must absorb Cantonese with a clear and open mind this is important because it will stop you from over analyzing Weisser and work is booking differently than from your own language. Finally, be patient. It truly takes practice to learn a new language. I hope that through this course you will find the confidence to use it among companies speakers and continue to practice improved and progress. 3. Why My Approach Could Work For You: this that this training does not cover the 60 intonations of Cantonese. This was done purposely because when I talked Cantonese, I find that many people get discouraged right away. But the added complexity of the Internation mixing we're learning new Cantonese vocabularies. Furthermore, most people failed to master pronouncing Cantonese correctly anyway, even through learning the inter nations. This is because Cantonese is a difficult spoken languished that requires repeated practice , just like most other languages. Therefore, I find that by diving into learning the actual pronunciation that closely resembles English , you will find learning basic candle needs to be more efficient and enjoyable. After all, Cantonese babies never learned the actual intonations before. Understanding basic words would help them room with the repetition of listening to family members speaking Cantonese around them. This is the same idea. What that said the six intonations are helpful, even though they can be quite overwhelming and discouraging for beginners. So instead of jumping right into the intonations, it could be much more helpful to first overcome the hurdle of speaking basic tender in these words and then use the intonations to refine your pronunciation Afterwards. However, if you prefer to first begin with understanding the inter nations, then there plenty of great videos out there that help you achieve this. But if you want to learn Cantonese in a simpler approach that will help you develop the confidence to speak basic and who needs words and phrases that this is the right video for you, so let's get started. 4. Introduction: Numbers: counting in Chinese may be easier than you think, and Cantonese is no exception. The Cantonese counting system follows a logical and structural approach of sequencing numbers. What this means is that as long as you're able to count from one to 10 you will be able to count as highest up to 99. It's really that simple from their arm. All you have to know is to say, 101,000, 10,000, 100 million, and you'll be able to count as high as in the trillions. So because counting from 1 to 10 is so important, let's get started. One. Yeah, to hey, three. So four se five Mm. Six. No. Seven 10 a, uh, nine. Go 10. So now let's put them together. Yeah. Mm. So se Mm. Long it's, huh? Um, go. So now that you can understand how to count from 1 to 10 we can put the numbers together for a sample to say 11. You put 10 and one us such so 10 and one. Yet therefore so yeah, it's 11 to say 12 again. You would put 10 and two together to say 10. It is so to say to it is me. So he Therefore, it is 12 5. Two Digit Numbers: to cow higher numbers. You follow the same logical approach. 20 is two and 10. 30 is three and 10 and so forth. Let's try it out. 20. He's up 30 some So 40. Say something. 50. I'm so 60. Look so 70 I said. So 80 but so 90. Go some now that you are able to count from one digit 22 digit. Now let's try a little bit more harder Numbers such as 23 to say 23. You put 20 and three together to say 20 it iss He's up and you say three. It is some. Therefore 23 it is. He's up some. It is the same logical and structural approach as you're putting numbers together. So let's try three random numbers and you will see that it is very, very easy. 53 50 Moves up. Three some 53 use of sound 71 70 Just one. Yeah, 71 sense of yet 99 90 goes up. Nine go 99 goes up. Go! Now that you understand how to count from 1 to 10 you're able to count as high as up to 99 6. Big Numbers: The next level of counting in Cantonese involves understanding the Chinese counting system . Unlike in the West, in which you count by separating the three digits such as 1000 100,000 or one million, the Chinese county system is much simpler. As long as you're able to say 100 1000 10,000 and 100 million. Then you can virtually say any numbers or count of two trillions to say 100. It is, Yes, but yes, but 100 to say 1000 it is yet seen yet seen one 1000 to say 10,000. It is young mom yet Mom. 10,000 to say 100 million is your yet? Yeah, yeah, 100 million. So now that you're able to say all these four essential numbers, you can count as high as up to trillions. It is a different way of looking at numbers. But if you're able to say the four important numbers in Chinese, then the system is much easier. So forget whatever system you know and learn the Chinese approach and think in Chinese. Then you're able to speak and town in Chinese. What? These This practice again, For example, to say 200 IHS e bought he bought to is he? But is 100 he bought is 200 to say 3000. It is some teen something three 1000. Some team to say 40,000 it is same on. See Mom four and 10,000. 40,000. Same to say 500 million. It is. Mm. Yet? Um, yeah. Five. Mm. Yeah. Ah, 100 million 500 million. Yeah. Now let's join some numbers together, such as 103 to say that you need to know a newer, which is zero to say zero in Cantonese. It is late live 303 That is samba links. Um, 300 03 Some back links. So you can pretty much put any numbers together in this approach of using zero this practice in them for another number. 508 to say 500. It is back to say a it is spot to say 500 me. You essentially put 500 0 and ate together. That is battling back like that, battling back 500 a fine 08 So now that we're able to count as high as the hundreds Let's try the 1000. It follows exactly the same approach for a sample to say 1111. It is essentially 1000 100 10 and one yet seen yet, but yes. Yeah, yet seen yet. But yes. Yet here in the 11 you have to add the 10 digit which is yes, up yet. So to put them all together, it is yet seen yet back. Yes. Some. Yeah, to say 2222. It is the same approach ET me, but he's up E. 7. Review: Numbers: Let's review what we just learned. You learn how to count from 1 to 10 and because you're able to count from 1 to 10 you can now count up to 1 to 99. And because you're able to say the four important Chinese counter numbers, which is 100 1000 10,000 and 100 million, you can now count as high as up to the trillions to review what we just learned. Let's count 1 to 10 together. Yeah, Okay. So, se Mm. No, it's hot, but go. So to say, the four new counter system from the Chinese counting system is 100. Get back 1000 yet seen 10,000? Yes, Mom. 100 million. Thank you. To say zero. It is Lynn. These are all the essential numbers from the Chinese counting system in which will help you effectively count in Cantonese. So a slow as you can say these 15 numbers, you can really count any number you wish in Cantonese. 8. Introduction: Colors: There are 10 frequently used colors that are often spoken in Cantonese. The's 10 frequently used colors are important for you to learn so that you can understand descriptive phrases. In addition, you will also learn how to say light and dark. Fortunately, that Kent on the system off saying colors is actually very simple. Let's get started. Color is I'm sick. Um, se sick is going to be used throughout all of the colors for a sample Read home. Sick pink fun home Sick, purple Si sick blue lam Sick green look sick. Yeah, Low. Whoa! See orange Tom Sick Brown. They're sick. Black, huh? Sick gray boy. Sick. Why? But sick this. Repeat them together. Home. Say fun. Home sick. Si. Sick, long sick. No sick, long, sick. Thanh Sick. Fair. Sick, huh? Sick 46 by sick 9. Light And Dark Colors: to save variation of colors in Cantonese, such as lying and dark. You just have to put this work in front of the colors, for example to say light. It is seen to say dark. It is so seen. So, for example, to say, like blue, it is seen lousy. Seen life long, sick, blue seen lounge. Sick, light blue to say dark red For a sample, it is some home safe, So dark home, say, read some home sick, dark red. You can put the words light and dark in front of any colors, and you will be able to describe the color variation you wanted. So let's review it together with a few other examples. Team won't Sick team won't sink Seen look sick, seen look sick. Some They're sick, some fair sick. So no sick. Some look sick and there you have it. Now you're able to not only say the color, but you're able to describe the variation of it. 10. Color Phrases: often times you will hear Chinese use colors to describe meanings in different contexts. For example, black white can be used at reasoning. Legal Young. Don't six happen. This person doesn't know how to distinguish black from white or simply this person is not reasonable. Mikoyan Sick Fun hat As you recall, hot box means black white. Another description that is often used is home. For example, during Chinese New Year, you may hear someone say, Wow, your house is decorated home. Don't go. That means your house is decorated red everywhere. Finally, another frequently used description is boss, you shoot. This is used when you try to describe a baby who is very pure white, like the snow, this baby is a shoo shoo. This baby is faster. Shoot legal B B. Holbox. 11. Review: Colors: Let's review what we just learned. By now, you are able to say 11 of the frequently used color words, and you're able to say light and dark to explain the variance of the colors. You also learn three phrases that are frequently spoken to describe something. Let's review everything together. Homesick, Fun home safe. See you sick, long sick. Look sick Long Say time. Sick, Fast, sick. How sick for you? Sick but sick. These are the 11 frequently spoken colors. Another two often used words that you illustrate. Light and dark are seen, so seen some teensy means its light. Something means it's dark. Finally, you also learn three phrases that you might hear of spoken by Chinese, such as Hot spot, black white home Don't go. It's full bread, but suits suit white as snow. So now that you're able to say all that I'm sick, you can use it to describe any object or use it in your faces and your everyday Cantonese spoken phrases 12. Introduction: Pronouns: you will often hear pronounce being spoken. The raw data, great conversations Chinese pronounce is actually very simple, as there is no distinction, for example, between the words I or me, we or us as well as he, she or it. Because there is such limited number of vocabulary, it makes it much easier to memorize as the same work can be used throughout different contexts. But it does require a bit of getting used to, so let's get started. 13. Pronouns: I will now give you a high level overview of each of the pronoun and how to pronounce each one of us. I or me. It is pronounced Oh oh, to say we or us. It is all day. Oh, they to say you it is Les Les to say you guys, it is late day lay day to say he she or it it is code code to say they were them It is code they curry day Let's review oh, all day les late day code curry They you may use processes pronounced by adding that were yeah, after each of the personal pronouns that we just learned So, for example to say mine s in this bull off rice it's mine. It is O k Oh, okay. To say hours it is Oh, they get all they get to say yours. It is Les Yeah, lay there To say you guys is a sin, Pearle yours it is Play they there Les They care to say it is hiss hers or it's it is co gay curry gay to say there's it is code. They get curd, they get this review all the words together. Oh yeah, Oh, yeah, All they care all they care Lague Late Yeah, late They late They care could get code, they get code they get Could you get could get Could they get Could they get to say myself ? It is therefore Well, let's see Gay Oh, see, gay to say our self It is all they see gay All they see gay to say yourself it is Lady C day Les see gay to say yourself plural it is late They ck les they see gay to say himself herself or itself. It is code See gay co see gay to say themselves It is co they see gay Kurt They see gay this wrap everything together. Oh, see Gay All see gay Oh, they see gay Oh, they see gay les C k les See Gay Les Daisy Day late They see game currency Gay co see gay curd They see gay curd they see gay. Now that you have learned personal pronoun possessive pronoun as well as to illustrate self , you will be able to converse as high as up to one of 50% of the most commonly used phrases in every day Conversations. Good luck 14. Review: Pronouns: way have learned three types of pronounce. The 1st 1 is the personal pronounced such as I, we you, he and they The second type is possessive pronoun such as my ours, yours and theirs. Finally, we also learned how to say Self Essen myself, yourself, himself and themselves. With all these vocabularies, you will be able to construct simple sentences that are being used throughout day today Conversations. 15. Introduction: Directional Words: directional races in Cantonese, said Chest. This one or that one follows a logical and structural construction. For this lesson, we will explore the various ways off illustrating a direction or the location of an object . Let's get started. 16. Directional Words - Part 1: go is a counter that is used to describe an object. For example, Leeco les Go. It means this one Go, go, go, go! It means that one being gone being go It means which one It is a counter in pro for for example, To say these it is Leiby late the to say those it is Goldie, go be to say which ones it iss being the being the so is used to signify directions for example to say Here it is may, though late though to say there it is Go, go, go, go to say where it iss bean, though being though being is another directional work to signify way for a sample to say this way it is Les being play being to say that way it is go being gold being to say which way it is being being being being 17. Directional Words - Part 2: you have now successfully learned how to illustrate the placement of an object or the direction. But did you notice a pattern? For example to say Leko, Lady Lato late Being off these faces start with the were lay play generally means this so secretly. Go, go goby go and go be starts with go Goal in this case generally means that finally, you also here bingo being the bean, though being being the being in the beginning generally signifies which or where. As you can see, Cantonese has a logical and structural approach in illustrating directional words or placement and often object. As long as you can memorize these words, you will be able to communicate the indication. As long as you can memorize D C central words, you can construct most of the sentences. One last remark on the words goal and be when combined together they might sound were similar for sample goal. Goal means that one being bean means which way the words. It's like where petitions. However, with practice, you will get better at listening to the words and will be able to communicate with east again. Let's review Go, go, go, go that one being being being being which way 18. Review: Directional Words: you have successfully learned how to use directional words. Let's review off the ones that we have learned so far. You have learned to say this one that one and which one play Go, leave, Go This one Go, go, go, go! That one being go being go Which one? Next? You also learn how to say the's Those and which ones? The plural form laid the late the thes go d gold The those being be bean The which ones? The next say the words are related to directions Here, there and where Play though lay though. Here go, go, go, go there being though bean though where finally you also learn how to say this way that way and which way made bean late Bean This way. Go, be go be that way being being being be which way as you can see there is the structural way off saying this That and where to say this is late to say that it is a goal and to say which or where it is being. Once you're able to master these directional words in its structure, you will be able to memorize them more effectively and use them in your day to day conversations 19. Introduction: People: In this lesson, we will learn about Cuba hours on people which will allow you to understand the context or illustrate one in a sentence. These keywords include family members, classmates and colleagues as well as friends or the common salutation such as Mr and Mrs 20. Family Member: guy means family member family is important value in the Chinese culture. Therefore, you may even here being mentioned their ingredients such as How is your family member or Lego? Kalyan Dema? Let's learn some of the key words for family members to say that it ISS uh huh Uh huh. To say Mom is wow Mama to say older brother it is Go, go, go go! To say older sister it is God said God day to say younger brother it is I die. I die to say younger sister It is more, more, more more to say, Grandpa. But on the father side it is Yeah yet Yeah, yeah, to say Grandpa on the mother side it is. Go, go, go! Go To say Grandma on the father's side it is Mama my mom to say Grandma on my mother's side . You go to say an older girl cousin is Buttes Butte to say the younger boy cousin. It is viewed by you die to, say, a younger girl cousin. It is beautiful. Boy, be more. As you can see, there is a distinction between older brother and older sister, as well as younger cousin and younger cousin who is either boy or girl. As you can see, family members use a hierarchy structure, said Jess. Older versus younger, as well as on the father's side versus on the other side. With exposure to listening and some practice, you will master the family member Key works in Cantonese. 21.
