Have you ever struggled with covering cakes in fondant? Do tall cakes and sharp edges give you nightmares? Then this class is perfect for you!

My name is Elli, and I am a wedding cake designer from South Africa. I previously struggled with fondant and got frustrated with not getting consistent results.  So, I put my thinking cap on, and I came up with this simple, yet super effective technique: the Seamless Paneling Method.

In this class you will learn how to:

  • cover super tall cakes in fondant 
  • get smooth results without seams
  • get super sharp edges (rounded edges are also included)
  • get consistent results every time
  • how to make friends with fondant and feel comfortable with the medium 

By the end of this class you will be able to cover tall cakes with confidence!

You don't have to have any previous fondant skills, (however, some basic cake knowledge in terms of filling/ stacking cakes would be advisable - if you have never touched flour or buttercream in your life, this course might not be the one to start with... ).

Even if you are a seasoned decorator, this technique might give you better results than the traditional paneling draping methods.

1. Introduction : everybody. My name is Elie. I'm from the trick with squirrel patisserie. Okay, hands up. Who here has had abundant headaches? Who here has had marked maids about having to cover super tall skinny cakes or even getting these beautifully sharp ridges and a beautiful silhouette even on smaller cakes I have use , I've been there years have done that, got the T shirt. So I came up with this technique. It's a seamless paneling method that will give you beautifully sharp ages around it inches , but particularly beautifully straight sides. And no, seems we will hide the seems very, very well. And I hope that this technique will really change your life as it has mine, that it will push you more towards the side off loving funding rather than hating it. Because I didn't get to that point where was utterly hating fund. So I wanna not. I want to help him that you don't have to go through that. Okay, so let's get going. I'm going to go through the materials and then I'm going to see you in costs 2. Preparation - Materials and tools needed: Okay, If always start with actually covering our dummy, we are going to have a look at all the materials we need. We want to make sure that we have everything ready to go, so we don't scramble in between to get more stuff that is really super important. I want you to just get everything, really, because the the funding is time sensitive. So you just want to make sure that you're not running away in between. And then at that point, it's probably going to get the ugly elephant skin that you really don't want. So let's have a look at our materials, and then we can get going. So the most important thing, obviously, for fund it in. Yes, we need some funded right? So I use this bake ALS, pitting us pity knees. I don't know, pronounce it striding. Look it up. But alas, there's nothing out there. This is a brand that I really enjoy using. It's smoothed out very nicely when there are cracks when there's parts that need to be blended together, which is very important with this technique. So I try to find a fund that is not too soft. It has some stretch, but not too much. And it also smooth this out very nicely when you kind of wrapped two surfaces together. So any kind of funding will do. You will be able to make most fundament work for you, but this is just one that I've really enjoyed using and that I'm kind of like that on. So it's a very cheap one, actually. It's a great brand. It's very consistent, and I found most countries stock this. So then you can. You should be able to get your hands on it easily or otherwise. You can order it online. So does this the brand of fund and I use. Then if you're funded and gets a little bit dry, you can either add a little bit of water. We can add a little bit off blistering. This is just some blistering for you guys, so that will help with making the funding more smooth. If you are struggling in extremely cold conditions, extremely dry conditions that would really help, and if the consistency is not just the rights to the TV, then you can add a little bit off this mystery. Then we need a couple of fund and smoother. I like having a whole bunch of different ones. Seasons are lovely. I think these are F M M ones and they've got a lovely big surface. So that's why I love thes. Then these cheapies turned out to be the based investment ever. They really do work very nothing. These are the ones that you really get anywhere. I mean, those are very easy to use their fantastic. I love that the kind of grip you get on these. So I used them all the time. Even though they really like a cheapie tool, Then I've got these ones which I absolutely love, because they when you push them down onto the ground onto the table, the surface you're working on, they make a perfect right angle. So for me, that is super important. And in getting a nice and straight side, especially because this is quite tool, this is a very nice and tool fondant smoother. And this helps was keeping it perfectly straight up and down. So you don't get dames in your in your fund, and I've got two of those, but you just actually just one. So if you can get your hands on one of thes Please get yourself some things are really, really, really handy. Okay, then we need some non slip mat. This will help us with handling the dummy because they don't have weight. It's actually much more difficult to cover a Demian funding than it is a real cake. Because the rial cake has got weight, it's not going to slip away from you and run away. Where is with the dummy cakes? It's a little bit more tricky to make sure this for justice funded eating thing doesn't run away from you, and it's not pushing around the table the whole time, so you can remedy this by having a little bit off non slip mat at hand. For that was the need. Scissors. We need a little spray bottle that's filled with boiled water. You don't for when it's real cake. Want to introduce bacteria into your cake? Right? So you want to make sure that the water has been boiled and cooled and I've added a little bit warm water at some point. So that's why my bottle looks a little bit distorted, that it still works fine. Okay, so these cake sharpies are really great for when you have made a danger or something like that, and then you can just erase it. But you don't have to have thes thes are optional. You also really, really want to get yourself some funding Smooth. Er's thes our luck. I'm gonna put the brand on the cross materials, but you can actually just use one of thes folders as love as it has a nice and rough picture. Not like this, but like this. It needs to have a little bit off a texture to it. And then you can just cut yourself pieces and make sure you around the ages. And there you go, ready for tonight's fund. Ensminger. So if you can get your hands on fancy kind, then definitely you can cut yourself one from from a flip folder. Just make sure about the picture that's important. Then I'm sure the since chills down your spine This size off dummy. This is an eight inch tool, five inch cake. So if I want to make this in real cake, I would make sure that I would have a baseboard at the bottom, like so, then covering it in a nice, thick layer off ganache to make it really solid. You really want to make sure that your kicks off really well constructed for this technique ? I will eventually have a close on hard ganache cakes. And I get the perfect shop ages. So you set yourself up for success for this. But you really want to just make sure you've got a and your bottom cake board as well as if you want and in between cake board here. So it's two cakes. I'm gonna add Skitch off what I mean into the class materials, and then you want to make sure that it's covered in a nice thick coat off ganache at least 3 to 5 millimeters. If you can get if you can do more, do more. Okay. So, yeah, this'll as of Danny used to drive me mess in the beginning. So that's why I came up with this technique. So I'm really hoping that this won't give you nightmares anymore from that one. We want a really super sharp kitchen knife. You want to make sure that it doesn't have a Super six, um, handle so that she can get nice and close to the actual cake. You can also use a cutting tool. You know whether he can break off the blades. Just get yourself a new blade or break off so you have fresh, clean, super sharp Cata. This is helpful to kind of figure out where we are at in terms off length. So what's this? I don't know. And four bubbles I don't use just pins actually use the's tiny, tiny syringes. You can even use thes because they're cut at an angle so they really pierce through it nicely so that we helps. It's a nice trick. You can also use acupuncture needles and oftentimes find that the pinpricks from the normal pinheads It's a little bit big, and it can still show after you're done. So with these, it's very simple. Each pop the bubbles and rub over it, and you can barely see anything. So that's a really nice little tip for you guys. Then this is an optional we've got. I've got one of thes fund int mets, but you don't have to have thes. It is just a matter off covering the fund and a little bit while it's waiting to be used. So you just want something that's eight, black it out and just keep the hear from, you know, coming onto the onto the funding so you can actually use silicone mat. Or you can use piece of cling film. Then we need some bacon paper thing is just normal bacon paper as well as a nice rolling pin. And if you can have a rolling back one of these cutting mats with you or otherwise, you'll work bench whatever you're working on. And, yeah, it seems like a lot. But I mean most of this. If you have done funding before, you should really have this at hand. Last but not least, it is a good idea. If you can get yourself a couple off bigger cake boards, you don't have to have them, but it's a nice one, you know to just Then you can move your funding around ET easier. You'll see what I mean just now. And if you want, you can even get yourself in acrylic disc luckless. So what I didn't show you yet is I've got this little cornstarch pouch we obviously need some corn started to roll out are funded. I don't actually like using the powdered sugar. It is a bit more rough than the corn starts, so I find it to be a bit rough. But if you've got super fine powdered sugar where you are, you welcome to give that a go. But I like using the corn starch. Just be as generous is you should be with that. Don't be overgenerous because this is obviously going to dry out your fund. But I've just popped a little bit off the corn starch into little baby sock and put it of elastic around it. And that works extremely well. Check it out. Just the right amount off corn starch for me. And then we can get started with actually funding Ting this guy, I will have to stand up, so I will be hiding my face for a little while. I hope that's OK, but I want you to be able to properly see what I'm doing. So I'm not gonna take the camera further away. I want to be able to really see well what I'm busy doing here. Okay, let's do this 3. Preparation - Preparing the fondant and work surface: okay, just before we get started. Under is kneeling. That's okay, because it's we're just talking to a camera faces in there, right? So just to more tips before we get started, Firstly, try not to wear anything black while you are funding Ting Just because you are going to get those little bits off fabric on your fund and and it's going to drive you insane. So if you can work with a light color, even a shift jacket really does very well because they don't shave if that makes sense. So just make sure with that and to clean your work surface we need is a smaller piece off funded and and I'm gonna show you how you can do that, so it obviously wash it down first. But then, you know, always there's a little bit of dust. It settles here in there so we can actually kino our work surface with this little trick. Okay, Okay. So you're gonna get yourself a little piece of for then Heller, and you're gonna just smush it up and you can even do that. It would actually be better if you do this with an old piece of fund it. And then what you gonna do is this and just go use a work surface, and this will pick up call those little guys. I mean, I don't know if you can see this. So you obviously don't want this in your fundament. Really? So there's also mixedly static, whatever surface you're working on our field. So I really feel this helps a lot. Just make sure that you don't take this and now place it back into your fund that you're going to use for the kick. So I usually have a place far removed from the work surface for this. So I am going to put it down on my chair, and then I know I'm not going to be using this piece of fund int, okay? And now, before we move on, let's teach us to cut ourselves a little piece off them non slip mat. Okay, I'm gonna cut myself a That's squeeze, and then you can actually just battleground like so you want to get as much to the age as you can, So you want us much contact areas possible? You really do want to make sure that there's no piece off this month. That's sticking out. Okay. Okay, so that's proof it. And now is pretty much the most important thing that you need to do. Four working was funded. And you really want to make sure that you need your fund and very, very well. Okay, so let's get our fundament and pull this size cake. I think a one kg should be ample. I don't really work with major men's in weighing out. How much fun? Didn't I go back? Back feel And you just need to do it a couple of times and you'll be finding that, you know, Okay, an eight inch that six interest or needs about a 1.5 kg and you always want to add a little bit more than too little. Okay, Okay. And it is quite cold here today, so I will need to need this very, very well. If you do this for customers, please make sure you take off your rings tire here back there is super important. And how I need this is I push down with this part of my hand the palm of my hand because I've got lots of strength and they and I can put my weight in behind it. So don't only work with your arm. It's gonna get tired very, very quickly. Push in your whole weight and put your weight behind it. And then 200 sideways folded over. Push sideways, forward over and push. This way, there's always space for you to escape on the other side. That is super duper important. And you'll feel a difference. I'm gonna show you what the next piece, what a difference it makes when you need your funding. Well, it is super duper important that this is probably the part that most people skimpy on, and they don't do it as long as they should be doing it. And that's where you run into trouble. Just make sure that you give your funded a really, really good need gonna show you with the next piece. What a different take should this actually is. No. Okay, now that I've needed this, I'm happy with the take shift. I'm going to put this under a bowl, so there's no here that it was into this. So just a bowl upside down, and that's gonna be safe from here. Okay, so what? This piece I'm gonna show you. I mean, this doesn't look very malleable at all, right? So now I'm starting to need it Even here. Can you see? It's still cracking a lot. It's not looking very lacquer. If you pull it apart, it just breaks on you. So just keep needing it. It was like to sing the Dorie some in mind. I know it's meant to be sung with swimming, but just keep swimming. Just keep swimming. But signature Just keep meeting. Just keep moving. Just keep meeting. Needing soup that helps another Maybe your main yet like me. So it does help. Okay, let's have a look How nice indifference the texture off despondent is becoming. If you finding your fund and doesn't get soft enough and it doesn't have enough stretch in , it's just brittle And maybe, but old. I mean, don't use expired stuff, but you know what I mean. So then what you can do is you can either spritz it with a little bit off the boiled water or what I usually do is just dunk my fingers. I'll show you. I have been doing this in a long time. Nakedness. OK, so what I do if this fund, and this is quite okay, but let me just show you for demonstration purposes. I just push my fingers in like this and not just that should do the trick. So go with the feeling like you really need to learn how to feel your fund and listen to it what it's asking for. So if it is a bit dry, add a little bit of lister into it. It's gonna help with the moisture content in the and it's going to make it much more pliable. Oh, this is nice and soft. Look at this. Absolutely beautiful. Now it's a completely different thing than what we started with. So you see. But let me just level with you guys. It is super important that you need your funding very, very well. Please make sure that you do that. Otherwise you will run into trouble. Trust me, feel your funded first. The actual covering is secondary. What is important? The rial work that's happening is here when you are kneading and preparing your fund and just make sure you understand that another rule with with with fund int is I don't know. I heard somebody say that I did a course somewhere myself. And somebody said, It's not about panicking. It's about working with urgency. So I want you to get all your tools out. Have everything ready. Almost. Get yourself battle ready in your mind and then get going. So the list time this takes the beta. Okay, so we just wanna have every single thing every step work out for our based interest. Right? So we want to set ourselves up for success. All right, I've got everything ready to go. So before we start, what you really quickly want to do is figure art. How much fund and we will need in terms of the length. Right? So there's a nifty little rule. I don't know if your math nerd, I am certainly not. But I found this one very, very helpful. I know my cake is a five inch diameter. So what is that circum for? In circumference? I don't know which one it is. Sercan Fences. Circumference. I'm not sure. Pick which everyone you want to use as a word. But there's circumference is fought, so it's It's whatever the diameter is Tom's pie, which is so fishing for cake stuff, right? Yes, yes, you're going to times the diameter by pi. But pie in this instance is 3.14 Impressed that I knew that, Yes, some juice So but it's one of those numbers that goes on and on forever. I think so. In this case, five times 3.14 is roughly let's let's call it in. A 16 inch length are funded We need for our panel. So now there are no at that. We can get started with actually rolling out some funded. What we will be doing is we will roll out our lit first. Put that aside, cover it up, then roll out a panel and then assemble both of those together. Okay, let's get started. 4. Seamless Paneling Method - Rolling out Fondant Lid: I'm gonna take myself a smaller piece of fund, and we really don't need much. This will literally be just for the live. So it will be a size like this that we need. So we really don't need much funding for that, right? This one back. So I've got here my small amount of fund int for the lid. So I'm just gonna could take of this a small little need again. Just a quick one. And then what I want to do is I wanna push all the folds towards the back this way. We've got a beautiful flat center. So was sitting ourselves up for success. And I'm going to just squeeze it on the sides to flattening articles. It black widow. Then I'm gonna take my little suck with a bit of corn starch in it. Take my voting pin, and usually we needed a little bit off the corn starch at the top. And I'm going to start writing that Keep turning the fundament, and we're trying to get to about three millimeters thickness. Is there bubbles Grab a little syringe and there we go. So I'm just inserting it from the side, not from the top of it up, started stabbing from the top and pushing the bubble and then pushing it out and that to that direction, we can keep writing. I'm not too worried about this big bubble there because that will be cut off. Remember, we only need a five inch diameter. So the only bubble that might be popping its this one over here they regard gray. And once I'm happy with it with the thickness, this is about three millimeters. I'm going to place it. I'm so our cake board and then I'm going to sandwich another one on top. Or you can just leave it somewhere wherever you want. And then you can add that piece off. Funding met over there. So it's just about that it doesn't drive pretty much 5. Seamless Paneling Method - Rolling out and cutting fondant panel: Now let's get that part of the fund. And again, I just want to give this another little in the heat again. If you want to watch your table in between, you can absolutely do that. Maybe just another little piece. Just give it a nice little script that really will help with the stupid little fuzzies you often get. So just give it another little need, even though we have needed already. But just before you're using it, just give it another little need. Okay? Once it's nice and pliable and soft again, don't It didn't did as long as the beginning, Obviously. I'm sorry. Go. Now. We want to roll it into a little log. They go, okay. And a little bit of corn starch, he goes. And now we're gonna just press it down a little bit. You got and pick up a little bit of extra. The corn flour, some house you need on here. But let's see. And then what I want to do is I want to get the heart right, thirst, and then I will focus on the length, so we want to roll it out to about 9 to 10 inches. Heights because our cake that we're trying to cover his 80 interest. Also, we want about 1 to 2 inches. Leeway. Okay, so it's starting to stick it. But I'm gonna add a little bit more corn starch, and then I'm going to grab my measuring tape and just see where we're at with Justin Fate now. So we still need to keep going a little bit more. When I seen the middle day, there's a nice little big bubble that's appearing. Sometimes there's no bubbles. Sometimes there are tens of bubbles. It really depends on the day. It's actually strange, you know? Okay, let's get out Syringe and again, I'm going to push the bubble into one direction and then pierce it on the side and then push out over the air. And then there's one mortar. You they got OK, okay, that should be ample and no, if it's sticky and a little more people would start, but I think I'll be OK now. We're going to roll it out towards decides, and we need minimum 16 inches. But again, I like to have an extra one or two inches on our side. Just so we've got some claim but look room to play, so I'm guessing I'd like to go for about 18 to 19 inches in length. Okay, It's going. Make sure it doesn't stick. All right. He was doing good. Okay? No, I'm gonna get my shop well enough. And I'm going to just cut off the one side straight down what you can do as well at this point, if you find that that that this side it's moving this one, you can turn it upside down. So, for example, if these tens and tens off cornstarch on this side, I would actually roll it up onto a rolling pin backside and flip it over. Because this way, now, the corn starch will be on the inside. So all that dry bits that we having, you know, the elephant skin will be on the inside, which is preferable, right? Nobody's gonna see that. And then you can use a router for the bossom. If you block. I am quite. I do this a lot, so I don't really need to have a ruler anymore. I'm going to take my life and just make it perfectly straight. Cut again. If you prefer to do over the other ruder. He absolutely can put the remainder of the funding away immediately. And okay, so now I want to just cut off the silence, even put enough length. Who's still goods or 18. Thinking in the inches is about Yes, we can cut this side off a little bit of swell. Just make sure it's nice and straight, and now we need to just carve off the top. So we wanted to be one inch now extra so the mine in just up here. So let's just make a couple of marks for ourselves. None. Inches is about the and then we're going to just cover that off. What happens if we don't do this? There's too much weight with the funding, and it's actually gonna pull down and flop away from it. So you really don't want that care course? Does this not straight anymore? Usually do this last. There we go. You want to make sure that this side is super nice and right? That is probably the most important. The rest is just guesswork, really. 6. Seamless Paneling Method - Attaching the fondant Panel: I would do is I want to get my beautiful cake. I would be doing this with three occasions. Well, I will be putting it sideways so I wouldn't be doing this for a cake that is bigger in diameter than it is tool, if that makes sense, so I would only do this for tour kicks. The rest of them, you know, is that if the day amateur and the height approximately the same, so if it's a six inch that six inches tool, then it's fine to cover it with the draping method, right? But with the's taller ones, the fund and rips that it's just a matter off actually having its the funding does rip a lot, right? So it's really a headache. So I would only be using this technique for cakes that are really quite tool, where I'm worried that there fungible break. So what happens is with the usual kick is the biggest surface that this weight can be spread out over right. So you can actually do this with a ca gnashed nice cake. No problem whatsoever. All right, So what I like to do is I like to spritz the actual fund int. So what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna leave a little bit of a gap on the sun, and I'm going to leave a little bit of a gap up to the 16 inch mark on this side where I'm not going to spray cat. So let's spritz it. You can also spritz the take if you want to, but you don't. I mean, I find I can really see much better what's happening if I do it on the actual funding. Okay, so now I'm going to just grab over the fund int and at the moment, still very slippery. Right? So I'm going to keep rubbing until the fund int has absorbed some off the water and has become extremely tacking. And we want to move on me, like, over here, it's getting super duper tacky. So that's what we want. We don't want a slide. He funded. We want a super super tacky funded. Okay, there we go. And then quickly quicky wipe off your hands on a piece of kitchen towel work. Does he want a nice clean hands? And now I'm gonna take my cake and I'm going to line it up at the bottom with the room. And then now I'm going to pick up the funded on this side and start smoothing it onto the side. And remember, we've got a little bit of a gap here that doesn't actually have blue on it, and then I'm gonna really line it up. Onion, one side. Just this part needs to be lined up beautifully, okay? And just rabbit on the side so we don't get any air bubbles in live. And now we're getting towards the end, so I'm just going to keep rolling. There we go. Until we've got this little double latch up here, Can you see? So we've got this little double age. No, I'm gonna take my knife and actually cut through both. When you do this on your cake, just make sure that you don't damage the ganache. Because that would be a weak point, right? So we don't want those. And now I'm gonna just tease away the fund and ever so slightly. See, that's where it helps. When we didn't put extra, we didn't put water on the edges. And then now I'm going to just peel away the extra funded regard, and if we needed a little more moisture. We can put that on that. I think this will be enough for me. So I'm just going to ease it back in. They regard. And there we have it. And then are you wondering how the heck are we going to get rid of the scene? Okay, let's do this. What helps sometimes is actually getting a little container where you can put your cake on top off should make sure it's not since dirty. So there is the h that can hang off, because this way you can much easier get in the bottom. So what movement we're trying to do is this. We're moving our fingers against each other. It's like two cars coming each other, you know? OK, so that's the kind of movement we want. Let's do this. Okay. See? There we go. There we go. And this looks really crappy at the moment. I hear you. Okay. That it will make sense, Justyna. So we're making this, like zigzag line in May, and then I'm gonna take my fingers and with a little bit of elbow grease, wherever there's still a line, we can still go back into it. and just distorted a bit more on rap over it. Without heads, you really need to rub quite hard. At this point, you wouldn't make sure that you really just heat up that part, and I'm just gonna put it sideways. Can you see there is this line, But it is so extremely faint. Only if you extremely close to the cake, will you be able to see the seam. Okay, I'm gonna put it back down, and I'm going to focus on making sure that these sides are beautiful and straight before adding it to undid pretty much. Essentially. Okay, So what I want to do is with that fund and smoother just go around. Is any parts that are no great weaken, Just easiest at sea. I've just push the cart. That was not perfect. It was a gap. The a gash and have pushed it down. So now I can't just come off. Just make sure your knife is always nice and clean, because if it does have sticky parts like this, it worked appropriate. So just keep cleaning your rifles with a damn cross. It's very important that you're not is nice and sure. Okay, so Now I'm gonna just keep going around and working on a fund int if the bottom it's a little bit squeaky, you can just push in the sons of little bits. Okay? And there we go. Just get us much done to make the cake as beautiful as possible at this point. And then we're going to focus on the sides. What I will do now is well, I will go down on eye level with McCaig and make sure that the sides are absolutely perfect and spotless. So there's no parts. So this would usually be for the bottom off the kick. Right. So how do you do? You take my cake, and I would even do this with a real cake. I would kind of hold on either side and sit it down. Those finger marks weaken. Still kind of work out. Okay, So, like so and I'm just wanting to make sure that it's stack properly and then now is full. The chick okay, I will. What I want to do is get myself one of thes funding. Smooth this and start working the fund down to the bottom. So until there's normal gap, they between where they the screw? It was the pedals. And we they missus, see how I'm just pushing the funding down against the lips and I'm making it almost looks like it's melding or melting into the fund and at the bottom. And it actually helps that the fund and A to bottom is so sticky because it wants to just fuse with that immediately. Okay, so I want to do that all the way around. I can see a little bit of elephant skin starting to form because I'm taking me longer than I would usually. What? So I'm just gonna carried along ever so slightly, okay? And it's moderate depression back. You don't need to push to you. Hold with this, but you don't want to just like rabbits with no way behind it. Okay, so now what you want to do is actually push down to with the bottom. So not against the kid. Book down and start creating a rich in the funding. So you're just pushing the funding down, Lex. And again, gently and perfectly straight up and down it's based toe work over the cake like sore. So I'm not just doing this for the camera sake. This is how it works. Memorial cakes. Because here you can really see if you're straight up and down the cake and from this side , okay, away around. At this point, you want to just take it slow because you you don't cut too much flak. You can't really put that back. That makes sense. Okay, sir, No, we've got a beautiful cake, so I'm gonna get down. I level now and now I'm just going to keep working all the way around and make sure that my cake is absolutely prove it. And I'm going to be doing this by using one of thes handy little tools. So I'm just gonna work it away around inside. And what sometimes will happen is that the top will actually come out a little bit, but that's fine. We can still remedy that by cutting off the tops. OK, it's super important to be done on eye level because then you can really see which points need a little bit of extra work. And which points are fine. It is a teeny tiny, but it's OK. That was say, back all the cakes did Enough. If you are looking from one point, is the cake looking strength. Is it a beautiful surface that you can put your decorations on? If you were doing a minimalist cake and this would be gets there have been no decorations on Lee. What side either. So at this point, you can slide in non slip mat and all. You can just try and not move it if it's possible. But you need to use a super light touch at the top. So I'm almost making a sandwich like this between my choo smooth er's. So I'm doing this. Okay, so I've got one on the side. I've got one of the top and there we go super light touch. And this way, by rubbing them against each other, we can get a super duper sharp age. Okay, now I'm going to just give you if I would to make this cake. And now does this technique road with rounding? Yes, it does. So what I usually do is afterwards I'm gonna just do it on this side so you can see I take my finger, rub over it, and then I can control how rounded the itch is. And what I do is I grab a little piece off funded and I make a little hollow like so. And then I will lay this over the side and slide over it in this way. Beautifully rounded itch like sir, But I want to Straight edge. I'm gonna pop my non slip mat under here, and I'm gonna work the top so you can see how to do it. Place your little guy, stand again, one at the bottom one of the top and slide them against each other. This is much more difficult with a dummy because you can see even with a nonslip, Mert, this guy constantly wants to get away from me. I want to go have a party some way. So it is much easier to do this on a real cake. I promise you. I know it doesn't seem market sounds absolutely counterintuitive, but it really isn't a promise from us up from us. Okay, What do we go? Look at that. 9. Fixing mistakes - the magic word is "gunge": Okay, Here's my face again. Yea. Okay. Let's talk some guns. Okay. What we need is some high proof alcohol. You can also do this with shortening if you like, but I find, ah, high proof alcohol. It dries quicker. That's the whole point. So what we want to do? And again, it's preferable to let this six almost overnight, if you can. And just do this just before decorating this way, it will actually hard and a little bit. And it will make the skin a little bit less soft and dent prone of that. But for now, I'm gonna just show you what I mean and what to do. So you know. OK, so I'm gonna get myself a little bit of fun. Didn't you really don't get much of this, get myself a little bit of fun, Didn't. And you can do this on a plate or whatever you want. That's absolutely fine. I usually just do it on my work surface. If it's clean and then I'm going to add a teeny, tiny, bit off alcohol. You can do this with an eyedropper and really does help, or what I usually do is just poured into the cap, and then I've got a much better control about how much I'm getting out. And here I've got a little you can use a spatula off that spatula works great on. This is what I've got. So it's just a matter off working the liquids into the fund int for. That's a bit of a mace. You have myself a bit of a makes and he want to get it to a toothpaste consistency. So at this moment, it's still work. Patreas fund int Look soft spot fundament. Never online, but it's still not toothpaste consistency. It's also makes fabulous clue, to be honest, dress cracker keen and, you know if it really has a good amount of strength. Okay, so here we go. I'm not I'm gonna grab myself a little bit off this funding guns, and I just and fill that gap, and then I'm going to just give me off the exists on my knife and no snide over it the way good. Okay. And at the moment, it is still Wait, so it will still kind of dry a little bit. Okay, What you can do with a very clean sock. It's a little bit of the corn starch. Just get rid of the extra moisture and then now work. It is. But look at this. It is still visible. Like I said, I would have usually left it at this point. But it is much better then. A massive gash in march. You can be the only see it when you look closely, they we have our beautiful tool. Perfect cake ready to assemble 10. Recap - What we learned: Going through the steps: Okay, let's have a little bit of a recap for what we want to do. When were you trying to cover our cakes with this paneling? Method without scenes. So first, what you want to do is warm your fund and make sure it's nice and soft and ready to be worked. Then you want to roll out yourself a little. It you want to get it to about three sent to me. Sorry, not seem to me that you want to get it to about three millimeters thickness, and then you want to pop it under a sandwich off cake boards just so it doesn't dry out. Then you want to roll yourself the length off the cake circumference as well as the hot plus an extra 1 to 2 inches on either side and towards the top. So you've got a little bit of playing room. You want to again get it to about 2 to 3 millimeter stick nous. Also, the pains are look kind of fund int. Then you want to cut off the sides whatever you don't need, and you want to get a beautiful straight cut right at the bottom, and you want to cut off the extra, so you've only got about 1/2 inch to an inch at the top extra. The weight is too much. It will kind of flop in and flop over, and then that makes a rounded age, which isn't great. Then you're going to grab your cake out of the fridge or grab your dummy. You are going to spritz with a spray bottle onto the fund, and you're going to leave a barter 1 to 2 inches. Gap about 1 to 2 inches. Gap on the other side, where you don't sprints. You can even take a little piece off the baking paper to kind of cover it up in those points. Spritz. Make sure you massage the water into the fund so it is tacky but not slippery anymore. Otherwise the fund and wounded here to your kecks. Then you're going to get your cake lined the bottom off the cake up with the bottom off your fund int and roll and attach the funding to the cake. When you get to the end, cut off any excess that you don't want, and then let those two overlap black. So and then you're going to sit your cake up straight, cut through both of them and peel out the inter bit and the out of it that is extra. And then you've got a beautiful scene. Then you want to do this motion against the fund int. So you get a beautifully obscured line that nobody will be able to see because, I mean, we don't see those kind of things really. And go over a couple of times if you want, and then take your fingers with a flat hand and rub against decide quite swiftly. So you warned the fund and and you smooth that step gap. You can go back into it and do that motion again. If you're not happy with us, you can also smooth over it with a funding smoother and then a one of these waters. It's the flexi Smithers. Okay, so now you've got a beautiful sight and we're gonna go all the way around. Just was a normal funding smoother and smooth out all the sides. Go on eye level. Make sure that the cake is beautiful in terms of its in awaits. And then we're going to make sure the bottom is beautiful. A swell cat off the rim at the top with a very sharp knife. And then we're gonna grab our A sandwich with the fund and live in between it. Grab it, make sure you've got a piece off baking paper underneath and you can work on top off a cake board. If that's easier. Books, remember, we're stealing two sandwiches between two of them to flip it over. So if you prefer working on this, that's great. Then we're going to add a little bit of water to our fund on the baking paper on the cake board, and again, we're gonna massage it in until it's no longer slippery. But it becomes really, really tacky. Gonna grab OK, gonna flip our cake onto the top if you want. What you can do is you can literally leave, um, about like a two centimeter gap. So take yourself the size of your cake. What you can do is you can catch yourself a little room around you lit, and rather than flipping the cake onto the lid, you can take the lid and flip that onto the cake. So if that is easier for you, if you don't want to make Danes in your cake, especially for Israel cake. That is also an option. Okay, just see? No. So then we've got our lead. We're gonna flip our cake onto the top. We're going to smooth with the fund and smoother and make sure that they really makes a really beautiful seem by pushing the fund and down into the very sticky fund and at the bottom that the lit. So once that's done and we're happy with it, we're going to push even further with the fund and smoother and make a rich all around the cake where the funding is almost disappearing already. They were going to grab a super sharp knife cut away around and then we're going to Smith some more until we're happy. Flip it up and there we go. Easy peasy. It won't feel very natural in the beginning. Especially if you're worried about flipping cakes up and down. I was petrified when other that the very first time don't be scared. You can do it. Make sure you hold good pressure on other side from the top from the bottom. Good pressure. And 123 flip. There you go. You will be able to do it up from us. Just maybe have somebody close by in the very beginning that will stand by and just help you with it if you need. But honestly, trust yourself, especially with smaller cakes. It's really not that difficult. You just what is important is pressure from top and bottom. If you don't have pressure was gonna happen is you're gonna have it in the sideways position, and then the case is gonna flip out so good pressure, and then it's not gonna happen a promise. 11.
