About This Class

This class is aimed to anyone wanting to learn how to translate real life creatures into a fun cute kawaii style and interested in exploring the steps that will make you achieve it in a professional way.

No previous experience in this topic is needed, and, even though I target it to intermediate level, you might be also able to follow along if you are a newbie if you know how to use the basic tools, such as the pen tool.

I will be using Affinity Designer, but if you use any other vector software, I am sure it won’t be a problem for you to achieve the same results. This is not a course on how to use the software, but a course on how to achieve a given result. By the end of the class, you’ll be able to draw your pet, or any animal of your choice in a cute flat fresh style.

Maybe you want to create it just for the fun of it, or maybe you want to use it to create a T-shirt, or a sticker, or maybe to use it as an asset for a game. Well, you will have your drawing done in no time by following this super simple methods I will teach you in this class.

1. Intro: hi and welcome to this class where you will be learning how to translate riel animals, using a reference into a cute cartoon factor style. No previous experience is needed to follow along these cars. And for sure, even though these class targets mainly in committed users, I'm sure if you just know how to use the mental, you also will be able as a newbie to follow these cars. I will be Justin Affinity designer for these cars, but this is not a course in affinity. Designer. So it doesn't matter if your tool of choice is illustrator coral or even pencils, because I will be showing you the techniques how to look at the picture, how to pick a reference and how to translate it into a draw in. By the end of this class, you will be able to translate your pet, taking a reference into acute flat cartoon fresh style, I will be showing you how to choose a good reference how to translate it into a sketch, how to victory. I sit very quickly and accurately, and how to what color do you drawing? Maybe you want to learn how to do these to create your own P shirts, stickers, game assets or just for the fun of it. Well, by the end of this course, you will learn how to do this in no time and in a professional way with these simple methods you will see in this case. So now get on board and together. Let's show the world what you're able to do after taking this place. 2. Picking a Good Reference: in this lesson, you will be learning how to pick a reference that will be the base to then translate it into your graphic. It is a very important face because you want to make your work easier. So I will be showing you how to look for a reference what to look for, what to avoid and how to look at things in such a way that the work gets much easier. So the first thing I do when I start working is opening a new document. What? I'll be placing my images for reference and because I don't have a puppy myself. What I usually do is I go on the Internet and look in sites like, for example, picks abate dot com. I look for my reference here. I can just this images for free. So for my drawing, I typed this particular kind of dog, which is the one I picked. Ah, you raise here because I like this dog. And as you can see, I just typed the name off the bridge and I found puppies, baby dogs and other dogs, and I'm going to be pickin a bit off every picture I find nice for example, I find this one correctly going it. I find this one very interesting because I can see the whole face, which is one of the main elements you are goingto want to be joining. So, um, I'll save its I would save its. I'm gonna go back and I'm gonna find very many other ideas here. For example, I can have a glimpse off how them the the tail for this animal is so this one. Maybe I just also keep in mind. I also want a picture where my eyes are close. I following. So this one and I will be using this because I think it's gonna make it look very cute and very smiley. So I would say these 12 So I have to now, and I also or as I type puppy instead of just in the breathe of this animal, I found these other puppy here which has the tongue exactly the way I would like to portrayed a my graphic And I can see here, you know, the little Dong, even it looks a bit smiley slightly so I like this image. I will save it two. And so I go looking for things that will give me hints on what I want to do for my drawing for elements, For example, this one is her in a really nice position are conducive. Or I could use the Frisbee, his holy and just to up some elements later on. This one has a hard It could be also an idea to use. But yeah, I'm going to do it pretty much like face looking from the front and then probably oppose Berry much like this one. So I will have all these pictures at hand, even though the main one I'm going to be using will be this one, As I said, because this is my main element in the image for the particular one, I'm going to drop if you want to make it running or jumping or whatever. You should peak images where you see such thing with more movement, things like that. This is very good, as I say. Well, you know, it gives you all the details you need to know about, you know, nice. Bush's soon off their legs. Everything. This is This is a really nice one. But I'm not gonna be using this because I think if this is the first time you do in a graphic ladies, it would get a little bit more complicated. So let's just stick toe easier images try to avoid to use images where things are complicated toe understand, like, for example, these one. I mean, you just see the muscle here and you don't see much, so this is not a good reference, for there are many more, many better all the images that you could be using in this one. He looks very cute, but there is no defined shape. There's nothing really telling me what's going on here. So it's an example of what I would abuse in, they say. Also down is not nice, so I would use something different, Morrissey said. This is very cute also, and it's sitting in a way that you could really use. So try to use images where you see things going on clearly and it doesn't matter. As I said, if you take some of the reference just for small details like this one with a little tongue here which I will be doing because I like and I also like the post, but I will be more thinking on the features that my particular breathe off pets has. So the main message for this lesson would be big images where you see things going on clearly pick different once if unit, for example, this one Haas, the ears up clearly show in the face all the features I can even see a bit off them tail. I can tell that there legs are for e and strong. I can use thesis an idea I can use the ice on this one as an idea is not that I'm going to be looking at it. Sketching the Head: in this lesson, we're going to learn how to translate a reference into a sketch. As you can see, I mean affinity designer and I'm using a walking tablets. A very simple one. Nothing fancy. I'm gonna go to the pixel persona and I'm gonna grab a brush and draw here. And as I said, I'm using a Wacom tablet. A very simple one, a bamboo one off the cheapest on the market. You can be like this, or you can do it in our sketch book up to you. So let's go toe what's important and let's take a look. First off are the puppy, as you can see here, my puppy Haas Roast Very big hip. One important thing to notice is that puppies, baby animals and baby human beings in proportion have a much bigger hit than adults do half . So you want to capture the main features knowing this, but also you want to exaggerate this because your cartoon izing it. So we are going to sketch this puppy with a fairly big head with respect to the rest of the body. So let's stop and it's notice also that this puppy of mine has kind of, like, a hexagonal hit. See? There. So that's another thing you have to take into account. Just try to sketch the main shapes you see in your puppy or whatever them animal you chose to create. So I start and start here, and that's to fairly, as I said, big exceptional hit. Okay, so we have this now, I'm gonna take care off the years. Something like this. Okay, now I see there is thescore, kind of like a, you know, valley shaping there. So I'm gonna do something like this. I'm gonna leave a hint here that I want to make some off the four pope out there also for the years, something like these. Now I want to find a middle line here, something like this, because another thing I'm looking for is symmetry between the two sides off this puppy you can see here the symmetrical part is basically the face. But I won't be creating my graphic stuff as this one is. I will adapt it. And so I need to look for more or less. Symmetry is not gonna be totally symmetrical, but I will try to look for some symmetry and soft lines. we don't want angled. So it looks, you know, friendlier. Which is the main thing we want to do here. Apart from capturing the essence off your animals, another important hints. You see, the ice in this puppy are fairly close. Well, that's not what I'm going to do, because I'm depicting a cute poppy. So keep their puppies and baby human beings when you're trying them, and you want them to look cuter. What do you usually do is this resource, which means separating the ice much more, making them big and separating them in the case off my puppy. I'm not gonna make the big, but I'm going to humanize them something like, uh and, uh, yeah, it's gonna be like, oh, smiling something like that. Okay, So human eyes, your features also separate the ice, humanize them under out here, a little nose. I'm gonna also talk about this part here, which is something that I'm going to start sketching, like just to live a hit for me later on. That this part I wanted to be dark in the process off humanize in my puppy. I'm going to control the muscles and I'm going to you know, make it smile as a human would. Because, as you know, no pets, no dog, no cut, no animal for that mother smiles like a human being. Dust. So no wide open smile. No. Shine it if but I don't care about that because I want cute Poppy recognizable easily that he's happy and smiling as a human would. So I'm gonna do that here. Now, I'm going to start leaving some hints here like I want thes hair bit off foreignness k off these. Well, I'm gonna leader with another hint here that I want is to be dark hair. When I'm adding color, I'm gonna also make it look more happy by our in eyebrows. And there is some light in here. Probably when I'm colorizing. I would add some of color here, making sure it doesn't look like Sarah Kuhn instead, off a dog. Anyways, we're gonna do our lesson wrap up, remember to capture them in features. Look for basic shapes. Look forward. Things that really confuse your sketch. What you see in the reference humanized features, just try to adopt what you see in human beings into your puppy. So it's easily recognizable as a happy puppy or sad or whatever you trying to represent make the head bigger in every kind off cartoon ized, Um, peace, especially for puppies and babies in general. Separate the ice for extra acuteness. Look for symmetry and self lines. Try to avoid many Youngers. Of course, you can use some of them both. Try always to make them line soft and friendly. Now we're going to see how to translate the rest off the puppy. This is the body into our sketch. 4. Sketching the Body: in this lesson, We're going to be translating the body off our poppy into our sketch, as in the lesson before we're going to be looking for the main features. But we're going to adapt them to our graphic. So this means that even though my puppy is laying on the grass, I don't want to do this because I want more off a compact image. I'm gonna the one thing because I want symmetry. What I'm going to do, I take a look at the legs. They are short therefore e there strong. So I'm going to try to do something that works with the idea in such a way that keeps the essence off or puppy butts just slightly different to what we have in a reference. So I have this, like here, and what I want to do now is because I'm looking for symmetry. I'm going to do something different. I'm gonna draw these one here. I'm gonna cup come to this layer on gonna command C command fee. So I have a copy now and now I flip it. I'm moving to the other side, and this way is much easier to have something symmetrical something like this. Now the next step would be taking a look at the tail. And so I can see clearly that this kind of puppy Haas a tale that is Curly and it's short because it's a puppy and it's very free. So I'm going to try to come up with a shape that conveys this idea. So off course, I'm not gonna go and do something like this because this is not what I seen here. I'm going to try to do something like, uh, sweet girl. And always, as I said, basic shapes, soft lines. Now I see these head could be probably be more round here. Um, you know, fine. Tune in a bit my drawing, which I will finish when I vector. I said OK, you can do these at any stage. Just make the changes you need to do, and more or less, we have our basic shape for the doggy. Ready. Okay, Now I want to tell a story. This puppy is happy and I want this graphic to have some interest. So what I would probably do? It's at something that is not in my in my reference. I want to watch something that tells a story that makes it more interesting. So why is he happy? Well, let's just think that maybe he's got here. Oh, nice bone that he's about to its something like this. Okay, It could be also here. He could be thinking off. You know, it in this little bone. Something like that up to you could be that he's got here. Played with some food, you know, whatever you feel like telling. Now we have this. I'm going to add some more features. Like, for example, I want what, Here, like a color? Because apart from more interest, it's gonna allow me to work with more colors. Probably this is gonna be read, and this is gonna be called in jail or something like that. And it will give more color interest, toe or graphic. Okay, now the belly would be here, and that's basically our skates ready to go into fact arising. So to wrap up this lesson, keep looking for symmetry at that real shapes into basic shapes with the smooth lines in your sketch, just as we did in lesson before at interest, including elements to your sketch to tell a story. Now, let's go. Invicta, rise. This sketch 5. Vectorising the Puppy: So now that we have our sketch, if you worked on paper, just place it in your converse scan me, take a picture. I just have it ready. So what we're gonna do is first off, what I did is I grouped all the layers that were informing these says sketch of mine. So now I can give it some 50% opacity. Something like that. Because I don't need full color for this. I will work more comfortable like so. And I also looked my both off the layers. I also want my reference at site because I want to be looking at it for absolutely reference. Okay, so I'm working enough. Any designer. So I came to the drop persona, whereas the sketch I worked in the picture persona and now I'm going to grab the pencil. If you're used in some of their software, just go and grab the pencil to, and we're going to start working. As you can see here, I have my snapping activated, because that way, it's gonna be much easier for me to know that the notes are aligned. If you don't know how to use the mental properly, go ahead and take a look and my other course on how to use the pencil indefinitely center, because I can assure you that you will be using it in no time. Another thing to note is that I put ah, strong red color so I can see what I'm doing. When I'm working, I will change this later, eh? Nothingness off about four points for and 1/2 points that I can also tweet whenever I want . So I'm going to start drawing, and I'm going to use one of the methods I dating my other class where I really don't need to bother too much about what I'm doing. It looks better and more faithful toe my reference I put here remember, you use the no tool to manipulate your segments. So, like so I want rounding us, as I mentioned before. Now I'm going to activate the corner. It'll by pressing, see on my keyboard. It's this one in here, corn. It'll and I'm going to make this angles soft also like this. Okay. And I have this looking pretty goods now, as I mentioned before, in other lessons, I want to duplicate this and flip it. I'm gonna do it now because I want the head, Toby. One standalone peace. If I did it together with a body at the end, I will have them united. And I don't want that because, well, I think this is the best method just to make things simpler. So, command, see, common fee. I flip it in horizontal. I click shift to move it. I'm gonna make it a bit Not aware because I think I'm gonna like it better. Something like this. I select the whole I come to geometry and I click on at and as you gets, he No, we have four little head ready. Quite nice. Let's go now And effect arise the lex. And so I pull with my pen tool. My handle's I get rid of thes handle here. Now I have my visual cue again telling me they both are perfectly aligned, which is what I want. And now I come here and pull again. Let's see if I like it by click shift to constrain Abate to have better curves I think I like it. I get rid off this directing handled by clicking here I pull up clicking shift Well, clicking shift if I don't really need it Because again I say I have this snapping on So I already see when it's totally aligned or not? Not Yes, not just so I come here, I can just pass over the boundaries that won't be seen and I just closely there. Perfect. Okay, so now I'm going to put the leg behind. It's good to name things. So that's the leg. That's the hit. Good. Now I can do exactly the same I did before. I think I like it. I'm going to command C Command V. Flip it, clicking RV for the move. Tool and shift. I move it to the other side. Um, I'm gonna place it here. Maybe then later I don't know, because maybe looks a bit like a Baldock. So maybe I want to make it not aware. I'll see later. So I select both of them and I click on at and now I have just one shape. Now, as I said, I may do it just slightly. Not really like. So now I can align these two by coming toe alignment, and here on the line center is gonna line them. Yeah, I like it. Good goods. Now, maybe I pull it up a bit. It's something like this. So it's more off a smaller dog, one of a puppy. And now I'm gonna take care off the T just with a circle clicking shift to constrain proportions. That being off No, I se to, and I put it in the lower layer because that's the last element. So basically we have or Poppy traced the main celebrate the main features. Now we are going to keep going in the next lesson, explaining more things about this and then adding color 6. Coloring the Head: So the truth is that when I'm working on this piece is it's not that I exactly go first tracing at the silhouette of the stroke and then colorizing it. I more or less go switching between one and another and go creating the whole piece. But for the sake of organization, what I've done for this class, it's naming the one before affect Risinger, Poppy and this one color in your head. But actually we're gonna be mixing both parts off the work. So next thing I'm gonna be doing, I keep other in some features toe my puppy. Now I'm going to add the little ice, which will add a lot off character to it. Now I'm going to start adding colors, so I select my hip, which is the first thing I want to add call or two. And keeping the essence off this one. I probably prefer to make something less great, something like this. Now, for the inner part off the ears. I'm gonna pick something like this, and I'm going to get rid off their strokes because I don't want stocks and inner parts off face, So I'm just gonna go like this and Now I'm gonna copy these attributes and paste them on this one. Now, I'm going to change a bit the size off this stroke because I feel it's a bit thing and I off course I'm going to start thinking of changing the colors. So not making it completely black, but some that color. I think this could work. I'm gonna copy its on going to paste attributes to all the rest off the strokes in my drawing. Gonna make this transparent a bit so I can see through. As you can see in here, I'm not adding any kind off stroke. I think it would be way too much toe a stroke in this inner parts off their face. So I'm not gonna do that. What I'm gonna do now is the muscle. So, Unger up big here. I'm gonna the pencil. I'm gonna pool and follow a beats What I have in my sketch. Now I'm going to duplicated. I'm going to flip it, pick this up and move to come here. And as we did before, at perfectly symmetrical and now we musket inside the face, Ok? I was grabbing the opacity That there mother or father layer us. Now we have that. Let's give it on 100% capacity. Now, obviously, my muscle loss to be darker. So let's select something like maybe this I'm gonna get rid off the original stroke. Because, as I said, if you keep their stocks in there, everything is gonna look less clean, less clear. I think it works 80%. Now, maybe now I realize maybe I want it not so dark because I want the nose to be clearly visible. So probably what I'm going to speak this. And now I'm gonna make it darker, something like so in such a way that now So you see it gonna make it 80% capacity. I'm gonna grab this rounded rectangle. I'm gonna make it like this, and I'm going to you make it around. Now I'm going to convert it to carves, and I'm gonna pull down just a little bit. So it looks more organic. Yeah, something like this. Now I'm gonna make it almost black, and I'm going to select the whole give it 100% capacity, and now I can distinguish the muscle from the nose. That's why I made this color a little bit lighter. Not so that could go in with their little face. I think I like it now. One gonna at thes last details. So we're gonna not to be because I wanted to look like a raccoon. As I said before, something like this, I like position it exactly what it has to be say for these one up to me to position it more apple down. I have to colorize also hear the years. But I see their head is too narrow in this area, so I'm going to transform it a beats moving it up. What's like? So I like it much better now. Now we hope it is. We take the one below, we make it much bigger. We give it an uncle like so we get the same color that the muscle, Haas. And now what we have to do is musket inside the hits. Now, I'm going to add the eyebrow here just for the sake off. Making it cuter. Um, probably I would like to make some extra heading here. I will do that later anyways, not to make this eternal, but before one last touch and I'm gonna tweak a beats the features off the face in such a way that I'm happier with him. Okay. See you in the next song with more color in fourth it, buddy. 7. Coloring the Body: So let's color the body. Now we rice up to 100% capacity, the same for the tail. And what what I want to do here. First thing I'm gonna do is copy this shape here. I'm gonna get read off the stroke. You're gonna see what I'm going to be doing. I want to at some shadows here just to give it some interest. So I duplicate again. This shape now, have it three times, but one is overlapping the other. I move it a bit to the right and selecting both off them. I'm going to subtract these. It's a way to create a shape that follows exactly the original body. So what I'm going to do now is pull up the color will actually be trying first, maybe something like this. But I think it's way too dark, so I like it better. A bit lighter. It's just pull down, like so I think it works pretty well. Now I'm going to duplicate this shape and I'm going to flip it. So we have the other side, like so. And there you go. We have it now. I forgot to, um, create the Billy. So what I do is I duplicate this circle here, for example. I could just create it from scratch. Doesn't really, mother. And now we have a nice bell here because I want some interest. We're going to also add some color shadow to it. Get rid off the stroke. And I complicated. I pull up a bit. I select both of them, and I add a subtract operation. It being necessary to make it a little bit darker. Because where it's an area that police receiving less light, something like this. I need to Great. Now there, back black behind leg. So I'm going to trace it. Probably. Something like these, because that back leg is receiving less light. Also who These two notes are separated. I'm going to join them into one. Okay, Now, let's take care off these tail the tail. If you take a look here, we can appreciate one light color, one million color in one darker color. So I'm going to try and replicate exactly that. How I take the circle that is created My tale I duplicated. Get rid off them. Stroke. We have this. No, here. And what I'm going to do is musket inside, like so going to give it some slightly darker color as we see here light, medium that and I'm going to duplicate this again and I'm gonna pull it like so, And I'm gonna make it the same color as a muscle. And the years see, if I like it's e think in it's a bit more work. She just make it look like something realistic. In this case, I think I'm going to keep them a stroke for this area here. Something like this. So it looks more like it's sweet Erlynne. But I think this it's covering too much. So instead of the money like this, what I'm going to do is copy a copy it it's here. I get rid off the filling. None here I get rid of the stroke, and now what I'm going to do is converting it into curves. I'm going to open these, like so, and I'm gonna get three off the parts that I don't It which is mostly all of it. I have this and I'm going toe party like So again I got it, and I come down here, do my tail layer, and now I just can move it and give it some movement. Think it looks much better like this, and just by looking at it, the only thing left for me to go, it's just move it in such a way that looks a bit more detached from the body. But it still belong into it. So it's not so blocky. Something like this goods, Let's go no to the next lesson where we'll be at the in the extra elements, such as the color and the bone. See you there. 8. Details & Fine-Tuning: Okay, so let's go now. And at extra days to or Poppy, to make it more interesting, I'm gonna trace here. What will be the cooler? Yep.
