About This Class

Have you learned how to knit and purl, and now you're ready for a project that takes these skills to the next step? Then check out this Bump Up From Basics Beanie, where instructor Gretchen Tracy of Balls to the Walls Knits will walk you every step of this simple in-the-round project. In order to make it, you'll need the following materials:

  • Roughly 130 yards of chunky weight yarn (project is demonstrated with Cascade Yarns 128 Superwash - gauge is 14 stitches = 4 inches in stockinette stitch)
  • One 16" circular needle in size US 9 (optional)
  • One 16" circular needle in size US 10
  • One set of double pointed needles (dpns) in size US 10
  • One crochet hook in size US H, I, or J (5 - 6 mm)
  • One tapestry needle and one stitch marker
  • 24" of scrap yarn, preferably cotton
  • One measuring tape (or measuring device of some kind)

This project is offered in three sizes (Child, Adult Small, and Adult Medium), and includes the following steps:

  1. Introduction
  2. Long Tail Cast-On
  3. Joining in the Round & Ribbing
  4. Creating a Fun Detail
  5. Decreasing for the Crown
  6. Finishing the Fun Detail
