About This Class

The whole of the Portuguese language can be broken down into several different structures. If you take any sentence from any Portuguese book or any utterance, you will see that it fits into one of these structures.

I remember one weekend, I was writing some lessons for the week ahead, when I suddenly realised this. I noticed that there are a certain number of structures in Portuguese, and that every sentence follows one of these structures. I spent the rest of the weekend working out all the structures, and I wrote them all down.

Every structure you learn gives you the ability to say a huge amount. Some structures are used more than others, but all the structures together make up the whole Portuguese language. Once you’ve learnt how a structure works, all you have to do is insert different words into the slots and you have a sentence.

This course introduces you to structure 1. I’ve limited each course to one structure so as not to overburden you. By looking at just one structure at a time, you can really get to grips with it and understand its usage. It will help to clarify the Portuguese language and make it more like a reflex rather than something you have to think about as is it were a maths equation.

Each structure can also help to propel you to fluency; if you can manipulate the structures at high speed, you can start to say anything you want without having to thing about how to say it.

This course contains plenty of practice opportunities for you to revise what you’ve learnt and it also contains some hints and tips on how best to learn and memorise the structures and the vocabulary that goes with them. You’ll learn how to make questions out of structure 1, how to make statements and how to turn positive statements negative.

The Building Structures in Portuguese series is set out using the same learning techniques as the 3 Minute Portuguese courses. You can work through the course in three minute chunks, enabling anybody to learn Portuguese, no matter how little time you have.

1. Portuguese Structure 1 Introduction: all are a benvinda Hello and welcome to building structures in Portuguese Structure one. I'm here in Ondo. I'm a language tutor based in the UK Andi, I wrote this cause to help me, to learn to speak Portuguese. The whole of the Portuguese language is made up off a number off structures. I remember one weekend I was writing some lessons for the week ahead. When I suddenly realized this, I noticed that there are a certain number of structures in Portuguese on that every sentence followed one of these structures. I spent the rest of the weekend working out all of these structures and I wrote them all down. Once you know what all the structures are, you can begin to learn them. Every structure you learn gives you the ability to say a huge amount. Some structure that used more than others and all the structures together make up the whole of the Portuguese language. Once you've learned all the structures or you have to do is insert different words into the slops and you have a sentence. These structures also helped to propel you to fluency. If you can manipulate the structure is at high speed you can start to say anything you want without having to think about how to say it. Its structure enables you to say a huge amount. So I've limited each course toe one structure so as not to overburden you by looking at just one structure at a time. You can really get to grips with it and understand its usage. It will help to clarify the Portuguese language and make it more like a reflex rather than something you have to think everything through like it's a math equation. Before you start this course, let me share with you an extremely handy learning tip that helped me to progress quickly and effectively in language learning. When most people start studying for anything, they tend to spend the first day or two studying for hours and hours on get through lows of work. However, very quickly this begins to dwindle. You might feel like spending hours studying Portuguese, which is great, but you want that feeling of motivation to continue and it won't continue If you actually spend hours studying. Limit your study time to chunks of just three minutes. No more if you limit your studying to just three minute chunks. There are three things that will happen. Firstly, your maintain enthusiasm. If you want to learn anything, you have to maintain enthusiasm or else you won't continue. If you limit your study time to just three minutes, you'll keep Portuguese fresh and exciting on you'll be eager to learn. If you spend hours studying very quickly, you'll get bored with Portuguese and it'll turn into a chore. Secondly, your study more consistently. It's better to study for just three minutes once a day van to study for three hours once a week. A spare three minutes is relatively easy to find, even in the most hectic schedules. If you make sure you complete at least 13 minute study session every day, it will quickly become a habit that you'll do without thinking. It's much easier to fit in a daily three minute habit than a weekly one hour. Have it. By doing this, you'll become a much more consistent learner, and consistency is the key to success. Thirdly, you'll achieve more effective memorization. This is my favorite reason as to why you should limit your study to just three minute chunks. If you study something for just three minutes each day. Your trick your brain into memorizing the information more quickly than if it were to see the information for hours each day. It will think I see this information every day, so it must be important, but I don't see it for very long, so I better hold on to it and make it into a memory fast. You'll be amazed at how much more easily things tend to stay in your brain if you limit yourself to just three minutes a day, so three minutes is the key you had aimed to do at least 13 minute chunk every day, any more than that is a bonus. But one is fine. And if you do do more than 13 minutes long each day, make sure you give yourself at least half an hour in between each drunk. So work through this course and completely exercises. That's all, and you'll be amazed at how much you learn 2. Portuguese Structure 1 Chapter 1: strike 21 The whole of the Portuguese language is made up off different structures of words . If you know the words and you know which or just put them in, you can speak the language. So let's get on and learn structure one structure one consists of just three parts, and here is an example of it in use. Kucova say care. Kuku was sake. Here, come here. It means, what do you want to eat? Kucova saying care. Come here. Let's break this structure down into its three components on give each component and name. So firstly, we have a look. Oka, Which means what Walker on its a question Where then Vucic here, both a care means do you want and that's an infinitive carrier. Comeere, come here means to eat on. That's an infinitive. So those are the three components. A question. Would an infinitive carrier Andi an infinitive? You may be wondering what on earth an infinitive carrier our infinitive is? Well, an infinitive is just a vivid A verb is a word. You can put two in front off, for example, to eat, to drink, to speak, to smoke, to go, to be to hear to arrive or to leave an infinitive carrier is any word. You comport an infinitive on the end off in English. We have things like I would like Do you want or I'm going because you comport infinitives on the end of these, for example, I would like to eat. I would like to drink. I would like to go. Do you want to leave? Do you want to call? Do you want to eat? I'm going to arrive. I'm going to go. I'm going to dance. We can change any of the three parts in this structure. For example, instead of saying Luca at the start, which means what we could change it to owned on the meaning wear. So who covers? Say care Comeere means. What do you want to eat? If we change the walker toe on? Do we get on the horse? Take your comeere owned a bicycle. Comeere means where do you want to eat? Or we could change it to Cuando kwon do. Which means when we get Cuando se cure comeere which means when do you want to meet? So did you notice how the rest of the structure stays the same the boss acre Comeere part doesn't alter just because we change the question where that start. So that's three different question. Where's that we could use so far at the start off structure one on the meaning. Where? Okay. Meaning what? Or kwon do? Meaning when. Let's add a few more infinitives, Andi infinitive carriers So we can really start to manipulate this structure. 3. Portuguese Structure 1 Chapter 2a: using structure one. Here's a list off a few question words. A few infinitive carriers on quite a few infinitives. What we're going to do is use this list of words to get used to structure one by making up some questions. Ond ond means where on. Okay, okay means what oka Akrour ash I could orders means at what time? Literally at what our orders. Cuando we've already seen Cuando means when Cuando and com come means how come So That's five question words to start with, then some infinitive carriers. Well, postal possible is our 1st 1 Bosu means can I parcel? It comes from the same Latin word as the English word for possible. So something's possible. You could say, Is it possible for me to do something? Can I do something so borstal means can I possible? Then? We've already seen more steak here. Forsake year means do you want forsake here and then viable, See viable, say means Are you going viable? See? So that's three infinitive carriers. Now let's look at some infinitives that we comport onto the end off those inventive carriers. We've already seen comeere come here, which means to eat comeere baby. Maybe it means to drink beer that comes from the word beverage. Baby set a drink. A beverage paid a year paid here means to order petty. Then prove our Provo means to try Brava. It comes from the same place as the English word proved. So if you probe something, you want to get a sample of it to try it. So pro Vata is to try Baga Bagai means to pay Baga Fadzir. Fadzir means to do or to make Fawzia Alan God, Allah, God means toe higher. If you've been doing the three minute Portuguese courses, you'll probably recognize a lot of these infinitives. So Al Gar toe higher here here means to go here. Tomar tomar means to take tomar there they're means toe have there and then mood are mood are means to change mood are now You might notice that all the words in the infinitives list end in the letter R either e r i r or a are and the letter R in Portuguese has several different ways to be pronounced depending on where you are in the Portuguese speaking world . And so, for example, the last infinitive mood Are you might hear some people roll the R on the end zone. Mood are, but you'll hear other people pronounce it more like a French are moda and you can choose what's everyone you find Easiest. So mood are, or more data both mean to change. And so it just depends on where you are in the Portuguese speaking world. Secondly, the reason I've put the two in brackets on all of these words in the infinitive list is because sometimes in English we say the two. But other times we miss it off. For example, what do you want to do? But then what can I do? In the first sentence? We say that we're too, but not in the second sentence. It always depends in English on what infinitive carrier you use. However, in Portuguese, the infinitives don't change. So what we can do with this first structure is start to build up questions using the three parts the question word the infinitive carrier Andi the infinitive 4. Portuguese Structure 1 Chapter 2b: using the words that we learned in those three lists. How would you say in Portuguese? Where can I pay on both? Food bag are on the part of Baghdad. What can I eat? Who could commit? Where do you want to eat on the varsity? Here, Come here. On the worst day care. Comeere, What do you want to drink? Who could forsake your baby? Who was a care behavior? What are you going to order? Wukan Viable safety here. Survival. Seven year. What are you going to do, Cooper? Viable Safe as you Bucher. Viable. Safer, Easier By building questions using structure one. You'll not only get yourself more familiarized with the vocabulary and the structure, but you'll also without even trying, reduced the time it takes for you to string a sentence together in Portuguese. So let's do a few more. How do you say in Portuguese? How do you want to pay? Com. Goldman was a Kerry packer. Or how would you say, How are you going to pay? Call Move, Ivo Sipah com Viable, Say pagar Or how would you say importantes? What can I try both provide? Who could postal provide? So structure one consists off a question word. So in this case, worker an infinitive carrier fossil Onda, an infinitive who could pose a problem. 5. Portuguese Structure 1 Chapter 3: so far, I have said that the first structure is made up off three parts. However, there is 1/4 part which alcohol? Extra information. This fourth part is simply extra words such as noun adjectives or time phrases. We can add the extra information to the end off the question toe ad. Well, extra information, for example Kucova. Sacre comeere No cual se care. Come here. We know means what do you want to eat? But we quote out to the end of that s done later, which means tonight and we'll get walkovers secure communication loiter Kucova Say care, communication wayto Which means what do you want to eat tonight? The question on the most secure comeere on the worst day care Comeere means where do you want to eat? But if we add a word to the end of that, we can get something like on the varsity care. Comeere Ammonia. Oh, Novosti Care committee. Ammonia means Where do you want to eat tomorrow? So ammonia means tomorrow. The question who? Koval secure. Fuzzier Kucova! Sacre Fadzir means what do you want to do? But again, we could add some extra information and get something like Kucova cycle. Fadzir, Agora, Kucova, Sacre, Frasier! Agora! Which means, what do you want to do now? So Agora means now. So we've already had some question words. Some infinitive carriers. Andi. Quite a lot of infinitives. Well, here are some extra information words that you could use to add extra information to your sentences. Ammonia, Ammonia means tomorrow. Origin means today. Ashton. Waiter, I just don't know. It means tonight literally. It means this night. Estan waiter I water ag Water means now my starter. My started them means later. Literally more late. My start Hellish bore Alice. Bullet means to Lisbon. English boy English boy means in Lisbon. I wish the hand our national hunter can mean either at the restaurant or to the restaurant . Your friend who Frankel means the chicken. Who? Kazakh over milieu. Fukasaku for mill means the red coat. Well, yet Julieto means a ticket but a paolo. But a bowel means for Paolo O aqui. AKI means here. So there's just some example where words and phrases that you can add to the end to have some extra information. This list is endless, but what we'll do is we'll use these example words to build some more questions. How would you say imported years? What are you going to do now? Folk revival C 50 Water Luke Revival safe as arugula. So the structure is Oka Bible. See Fazil. And then Aguada is the extra information. How would you say? What are you going to do for Paolo who provide Will see Fazio Para Powell. Luke Revival safe Azia Para Powell! What time do want to eat? Later, Akko orders will say Care committee My start Ako Warriors will say, Come here my start. 6. Portuguese Structure 1 Chapter 4a: manipulating stock to one. You can manipulate structure one in many different ways. For example, you can take certain bits out to make different types of questions. You don't always have to stick all three parts together. Let's see what happens when you don't port. The question word on How would you say in Portuguese? Do you want to eat? Voice a care Comeere voice Acre, Come here. So that's simply the inventive carrier. Forsake here on an infinitive. Come here. Come here. Or how would you say? Do you want to eat here? Both. Take care. Com Iraqi Jose Care Com Iraqi How would you say? Are you going to pay viable CPAC viable? Sent by God. Do you want to pay the bill? Now? We'll see. Killed Bagayoko Tabora Wboc Care contact. So that sentence has quite a lot of extra information. At the end, you've got the main structure Which is do you want to pay? Will say kill Paige are And then you've got the bill, which is a quanta. Andi Now, which is Agua? I was a kid. I got up on the water. Now let's see what happens if you don't put an infinitive on the end. How would you say in Portuguese what you want locavore sake here, who quibble sick here? So in that question, there's no infinitive. But what actually is an infinitive? I said earlier on in the course that the word infinitive just means verb. However, it's specifically the whole verb, which in English usually has the word to in front of it. But not always. As I've explained in Portuguese, infinitives will always end in either the letters E r ir or a are so far in Portuguese. We've had comeere meaning to eat baby here, meaning to drink behavior, which means to order, prove that to try by God to pay Fadzir, which can mean either to do or to make alga meaning to hire doormat, which means to take dear tohave and more that which means to change. And if you look at all those words in a list together, you can see that they all end in e. R. I. R or A are so that's two letters put in bold. Now you can see it's ER for Comeere will be here I o forwards like pretty here, and they are for webs like poor bar. And so they're all infinitives 7. Portuguese Structure 1 Chapter 4b: So we've just had this list off infinitives and I said that you can always tell an infinitive in Portuguese because it will end in an e r I r or a are. But what about infinitive carriers? Well, an infinitive carrier is basically a word or an expression that can be followed by an infinitive. I've only given you a few Portuguese infinitive carriers. So far, we've had Bastable Bosu. Meaning? Can I viable? See survival? Say which means Are you going over six years? Voice a care, which means do you want? And you can put any infinitive on the end of these inventive carriers to make your question infrastructure. One in English would get things like, Are you going to eat? Are you going to drink? Are you going to pay? Are you going to go? Are you going to try? For example, there are a few more inventive carriers that you'll meet in later lessons in this course on , they'll make life much easier if you when you're trying to speak Portuguese. So now we know what infinitives are. Andi infinitive carriers. So let's look at the third part, which is the question word in a bit more depth. So what actually is a question would well, the question Words don't really need much explanation. It's easier if I just tell you what they are. So far, we've looked at five question words and in fact was envious. More number Question was altogether. So what we'll do is low them all right now. So we've had owned, which means where we've had kuka, meaning what we've had aka orders Which means at what time? Cuando meaning When? And we've had come, Which means how? Let's finish this list. Quelle quelle means which or which one quelle, then porker porker means why in Portuguese Borger literally it means for water Or for what reason? Barca then quanto quantum means how much and if you put it s on the end of quantum. You get quantum sh which is the plural and that means how many. So quanto and cuantos I mean, how much and how many Quanta Temple quantum temp means how long literally means how much time the word temple means time. So quantum temple literally means how much time But you can use it to mean how long on then the last question word is came game, which means who or whom there's no difference in Portuguese game, and that's all the question words in Portuguese. 8. Portuguese Structure 1 Chapter 4c: So we've just had this list off all the question words in Portuguese. Let's try them out with some practice sentences. How do you say what you want to do? Kucova Say careful here. Uchebo c Careful here. How do you want to pay the bill? Go! Move was a care package. Documenta. Which one do you want? Quadoval Sick here. Kewell was a care. How would you say? Why do you want to hire a car? Portavoz a QR algorithm? Calhoun porque hace care. How much are you going to eat? Quantifiable sec Amir Quantifiable sake, Amir, where can I hire a car on the postal algorithm? Cavil on the post swallow garden Cavil when you want to eat Cuando se care comeere Cuando se care comeere? What time can I go? Arco orders for four years. Akko orders for four years. So his that list again. Of all the question words that we're going to learn in this structure, what you can do to learn them is get a cue card. Andi, Right down the English question. Words on one side. Damage center. Then turn the cue card over on right. The Portuguese words on the other side to practice them. What you can do is just used the English side, work through each word and see if you can remember what the Portuguese word waas and as you go through the words, try and think off a couple of questions that you could use with that question would. So, for example, on one side of the cue card, you'll have the word where on the other side, you'll have the word ond As you work through those words, you will see the English word wear and you'll think, what was the Portuguese word? Ond And then try and think of a couple of questions that you could use with under on the possible year. Where can I go? Or on the voice? A gear Comeere. Where do you want to eat? By doing this, it will help you to memorize. The question was very easily 9. Portuguese Structure 1 Chapter 5a: the question word Kwale, which means which or which one can change in Portuguese, depending on what it's referring to. So by itself, it means which or which one. And you can use that when you referring to singular noun. So when there's only one of something, however, what you can change it, too, is quite quite, which means which or which ones. And this is the plural version off Quell. So quite said, both quell and quite mean, which in Portuguese the word quantum quantum means how much in Portuguese. And in fact it has four versions. A masculine, singular version. A masculine plural, a feminine, singular Onda feminine, plural in the singular. It could be used to mean how much and in the plural, it could be used to mean how many. It's quite easy to change, So quantum is how much in the masculine singular. If you put it s on the end. We get Cuando sh, which means how many in the masculine plural. If we change the open the end of quantum to an A, we get quanta quanta, and this means how much in the feminine singular. If you put an s on the end of that, you get quant bash Quanta ash And that means how many in the feminine plural and you change it depending on what now in comes after it. So, for example, quantum forsake ear quanta was a care by itself Just means how much do you want? If you make it plural, you get quant Bush was a care Cuantos was a care which means how many do you want? Cuantos Voss, a care Quanta venue was a care Quanta venue was a care. How much wine do you one? So you comport noun after the word Quintal Quant movin you was a care. But if you put a feminine noun after the word quantity then it changes to quanta. Quanta Camilla was a care quanta. Commendable. Say care means how much food do you want? So the word for food in Portuguese, which is comida is feminine quanta comida in the plural, he would always use quantum or Quantas. So quiet Bush is used with masculine plural On quant bash is used with feminine plural. For example, Cuantos bowlers will stay care. Cuantos bowlers will stay. Care means How many cakes do you want? Qantas bowlers Voss a care So cakes is masculine and it's the plural In the feminine we could get something like Kwan Pash, the Norah Ashmore Steak here Quandt Passion No rush was a care, which means How many carats do you want? So the word for carats is feminine and it's in the plural. Is there was a Qantas Qantas nor forsake here. How many carats do you want? 10. Portuguese Structure 1 Chapter 5b: seeing as we've had all the question words. Now let's practice them a little. How do you say in Portuguese? What do you want to eat? Kucova. Sacre, Comeere Uchebo! Say care Comeere, What do you want to drink? Who could forsake your baby here? Who could take care? What you want to order? Walk over a carpet here. Kucova sake. You're prettier. What you want to try? Look over. Say care provider who was a care provider? What you want to do? You could say careful, Uchebo Secure. Fuzzier. What do you want to meet? You could say careful here. So the vizier means to do all to make. So it's the same as the last one walkovers. Take your what you want to take Uchebo? Say care tomorrow. Who could take care? Toma? What? You want to have locavore? Take care. Google was a carrot here What? You want to change Locavore Say care Mood are Kucova Say care Mood are Where do you want to eat? On the worst day care Comeere on the voice A care Comeere, Where do you want to drink? On the worst day care, baby. On the worst day care, baby 11. Portuguese Structure 1 Chapter 5c: How would you say in Portuguese? When do you want to eat? Quando was a care. Come here Cuando will say care. Come here when you want to drink Cuando se care baby Quando was a care baby. When do you want to order? Quando was a care paneer Cuando se care pain here. How would you want to pay? Co move was a care. Go move on. Why did you want to eat here? Portavoz secure comm Iraqi portavoz a care com Iraqi Just a note Depending on where you are in the Portuguese speaking world, you'll hear the word Why pronounced either Like porker or poor kay. Usually in Brazil, you'll hear people say pour que And in Portugal your Helen pronounce that parka so you can choose whichever way you prefer Forca or poor cane por que vos care Com Iraqi who? Pork ovo se Kirkham Iraqi How would you say Why did you want to take the car? Portavoz daycare tomorrow car Who Pork ovo se care Tomorrow What time do you want to eat? I could order Will say care. Come here, Akora. Which one do you want to try? Kewell was a care provider Kewell was a care provider. Which one do you want to have? Wow. Was a care tear quote will say carrot here. 12. Portuguese Structure 1 Chapter 5d: How would you say in Portuguese? Which ones do you want to try? Quiet, Schrock. Provide question was a care provider. Which ones do you want to have? Quiet was a care tear quash Most take care here. How much do you want to eat? Quantum? I want to How much do you want to drink? Quantum Forsake your baby Quantum was a care baby. How many do you want to eat? Quantum. How much pizza do you want to eat? Quanta pizza. Quanta pizza. How much wind you want to drink? Cuando vi nouveau sake Your baby Here, Quanta Vin, you forsake your baby. What you going to eat? Oak Revival? Saeko Mia Oak Revival Psycho mia. Now just to note that similar to the word Borger in that it can be pronounced porker or in Brazil for K This phrase kuka you will hear in Brazil pronounce. Okay, so rather than Walker will be pronounced. Okay. And so pick whichever one you prefer Walker or Okay. Okay. Viable sake, Amir. Okay. Vasectomy. So how would you say what you're going to drink? Group revival Sing. Been here. Walk survival syndrome. Here 13. Portuguese Structure 1 Chapter 5e: How would you say Important G's what You're going to order Luca Viable Sipa Dear Luke, A viable safety of the year. What? You're going to try Luke? Revival See? Provide who convertible! Say, Provera, What you're going to do? Hoop revival! Safe as here. Who? Survival safe as year. What are you going to make? Okay. Survival Safe as here. Who? Survival safe here. What? You going to take survival? See Toma Kuka Survival Saitama What? You're going to have Luke Revival? Sadiyah Luca Survival Steitiye, What you going to change? Okay, Survival. Same with our survival. Same mood. Are where are you going? To eat on the viable. Say Comeere on the viable sake. Amir, where you going? To drink on survival. Siberia On the viable state, baby here. Portuguese Structure 1 Chapter 6a: seeing every have now learned all the question words, we may as well learn a few more infinitive carriers on DSA. More infinitives. Then we could start making got questions for structure one to our heart's content. So let's just recap the question words we had owned. Which means where? Okay, Meaning what Akrour means at what time kwon do means when come. How quelle means which or which one porker means why cuanto means how much and quantum in the plural means. How many Quanta Temple, How long? Let's we, How much time and came means who or him. So that's all the question was. Now let's have a look at six infinitive carriers that we can use in Portuguese. The first infinity carrier is Boston possible, Which means can I fossil waas a pod? And what Siebold means? Can you Morsi boulder more sake? Here, Vucic here means do you want more? Say care Viable? Say survival, say means Are you going viable? See, they have them can mean Do I have to Or most I never and then David will see There, they will say, means do you have to or most you. So what? You can do is write those six infinitive carriers down on a blank cue card. Put the English down the center of one side, then turn over on right the Portuguese equivalent, then to learn them. If you just look at the English side only on, try and remember the Portuguese side and also have a go up building some sentences or questions in your head using these inventive carriers. Now let's have a look at some infinitives, so we'll look at the one that we've had so far. And then we'll add some more. We've got comeere, meaning to eat baby here, which means to drink pay the year means to order through a vast means to try that guy, to pay Fadzir to do or to make algal god toe higher. Year to go. Doma to take here to have and mood are needs to change. Contra compra means to buy in Portuguese compra. Then this next word Gomes are Call me star means to start. It looks a little bit like to commence. Sear on a star both mean to be sear on a star, then partier Bad dear means to leave partier. Sy ear means to go out sign year tries here tries here means to bring crazier gas star and guess dire means to spend as in to spend money and then pass our best. That means to spend as into spend time somewhere there there means to see league Are Liga means to call leaguer FICA Fi car means to stay. Ficker Incontrera Incontrera means to find in control and then desire do they can mean either to tell or to say desire. So, just like with the infinitive carriers and the question words, you can write these 24 infinitives onto a blank you card toe, happy to learn them. 19. Portuguese Structure 1 Chapter 6b: So how would you say in Portuguese? When do you want to leave? Cuando will say care partier. Cuando se care partier. Who are you going to see? Game viable saying there game Bible. Say there. What can I bring? Uchebo sutras here? Who could post sutras here? And so I don't forget that Walker you'll hear pronounced okay in Brazil, So Ok, OK, Paul Sutras here. What can I bring? Where you going to stay tonight on the rival safety Kashtan. Waiter on the viable safety Kashtan. Later. Whom can I call game both a leader game postal eager. 20. Portuguese Structure 1 Chapter 7a: as a non question. So far, we've only looked at Structure one in a question. Former, however, you can also use it in a non question. Let's start this chapter with a quick recap off the structure in a question form. So structure one, as we've said, consists off three parts in the question. Former, you've got the question word, the infinitive carrier and the infinitive, for example. Look over a secure comeere means What do you want to eat? Remember, we said you could also add the optional fourth part, the extra information and get something like Kucova. Say care comeere estan later. What do you want to eat tonight? And so you can add any words to the end off this structure to use this structure when you're not afternoon, question is quite simple. You just take the question, walk away and get rid of the question. Would the infinitive carriers change in English? But they stay the same in Portuguese? Let me show you what I mean. Let's compare a question on a non question in the structure. One format. So the question Uchebo so comeere who could come here means what can I eat? Capasa Comeere well, a non question version using pasta and comeere would be something like Bostick Amir, my start. Postal. Comeere my starter. I can eat later. So the word postal means can I when it's in a question and I can. When it's in a non question, you can then put any infinitive on the end off possum. Both to come here means I can eat bossa. Where? Powell. I can see Paolo Postal year ammonia. I can go tomorrow, So let's look at two lists. Firstly, we'll look at the infinitive carriers as we've already learned them, and then we look at the same list again. But this time, with their English meanings in the non question former. So fossil in a question means can I Voss abode means can you in a question more sake here means Do you want survival? Say means, Are you going? Devil was Do I have to? Almost I on David will say, means do you have to almost you. So let's look at all the meanings of these infinitive carriers in a non question fossil. In a non question means I can boss a boulder in a non question means you can. I will say care means you want now this next one. Viable say in the question format means Are you going? Whenever you have an infinitive carry that's got involved? Stay in it. In the non question, make sure that the bossy goes at the start. So this one becomes more save I. We'll save I. You are going devil means I have to or I'm most when it's a non question and then you say, Davy, well, say Davy means you have to or you most. So this is another one where in the question format, the dossier is at the end, whereas in the non question, the boss there goes to the front. 21. Portuguese Structure 1 Chapter 7b: We've just seen all the infinitive carriers in the question format and in the non question former. But I'm going to give you a couple of extra infinitive carriers to use in the non question format. Care cattle means I want Carol and room. Oh, means I'm going room. So add those two little incident of carriers to the bottom of your current list. Now, let's do some practice. How do you say in Portuguese you can buy something here for Paolo? Well, say pull the complaint. Al Karaki para Powell Vaasa Both comprar algo rocky, barren Powell. How would you say you come by later? Comprado my start Vaasa po, the comprado my start Now you might have got this one a little bit wrong And that's because I haven't told you yet how to say it. Well, whenever you have an infinitive in Portuguese, if you want to say it on the end so by it say it. Do it etcetera. All you do is you put the little word, Lou Liu l O on the end, and you add it to the end of the verb with ah hyphen. But before you add the Lou to the end of the verb. What you have to do is take the are away from the end of the infinitive. That's why hey, we've got comparable comparable. If the VEB is an AOL VEB, you have to put an accent on the A. So here we have our support. Comparable my stand Voss a board comprised of my started. So in a similar vein, how would you say I can see it? Fossil veil, Buffel veil? And so the word there is to see we take the are off the end and then put a hyphen on the loom for it. Russellville. And then we put an accent on the E. When it's a are verbs, the accent is called an acute accent. That's one that goes straight up when it's e ar verbs. We have this circum flex accent that's the one that looks like a little hat. So, Bottle Veil. How would you say I convey by something here? Both Sukhum, Paranagua Key Boston compared alg wacky 22. Portuguese Structure 1 Chapter 7c: How would you say in Portuguese you can buy something at the supermarket. Vaasa both comply. Abu al Supermercados Vos a portal Comply Algo el supermercados I can buy some cheese on The word for some doesn't exist here so you just ignore it. Fossil compare occasion both to compare occasion I come Bison, think for my mom here. Postal comprar algo Pamina Mayaki Both Sukhum panel. Who? Aluminium Mayaki, You're going to be tired tomorrow. And the word for to be here is a star. We've learned two words for to be in this course a star and sear. And when you're talking about something temporary you use a star. But when you're talking about something permanent use sale being tired is only temporary. So here would use Ishtar. So you're going to be tired tomorrow. Varzi via Stark and sad woman. You no se vaya stark and sad woman. You I have to be there soon. There were started lot logo. They have us Starla Logan. You can bring it for Paolo. So here we have bring it on the web to bring is trash here. And don't forget when you put it on the end, you take away. The are from thrives here. And then you put a circum flex accent on the E. And then you can hawk the hyphen and the word Lou to the end. Voss a bold Atrazine Powell. 23. Portuguese Structure 1 Chapter 7d: How would you say in Portuguese? You can buy it later. And so again, Here we have by it. And so we hooked the hyphen on the word Lou to the end of the infinitive to get the word it . But before we can do that, we have to take the are away from the verbs. And the verb by is compra You take the are from the end and then you can hawk the law under the end of that. But don't forget you have to put an accent on that. A So how do you say you can buy it later? Voss A board comprised my star Well say both comprise my starter. I must say something. Devil Disease album. They have these ear alhough I can bring it forward. Josie Fossil Tras el para Josie Boastful Brazil Para Josie. I have to start soon. They have a call missile logo. Their comments are low. You can eat something at the restaurant. I will support the Camaro vote Support Camaro. The word border. You're here in a sentence like this. It'll be pronounced bored, bored? Com. If you're in Portugal in Brazil, you'll probably hear the e pronounced a bit more emphatically. Voss. A body camera. I'll go at a restaurant. How would you say I have to leave tomorrow? They have a partier. Ammonia. They have a party ammonia. 24. Portuguese Structure 1 Chapter 7e: How would you say in Portuguese you can buy some Think in Lisbon Vaasa poured compra English bore vos support Cambra algo English bore. You're going to be there soon. I will say via star Lalo I will say via start a lot lower You must go now. Vos a DVR agora Se de Vere Agora. You have to leave tomorrow. Vossen Dairy Partir ammonia. I will say Derry party LaMagna you can buy it tomorrow. Most support compliant woman. Yeah. Voss. A port compatible ammonia. You must say something for Saint David. Zero David, You can bring it with you. Paul The convert. Vote support Brazil combo. See? So here we got Brazil, which means bring it. And then we've got combo. Say, which means with you, in fact, in this sentence, because you've got convo. See, you couldn't miss the votes. Ciera start off and to say border Brazell Converse E because then it's clear that we're talking about you and nobody else. So that's something to note in Portuguese is that the word bossy is optional. So if it's clear that you're talking about you, you can leave it off so you can say border there as a locum will see instead off Voss a pod Rosello Converse e 25. Portuguese Structure 1 Chapter 7f: How would you say in Portuguese? I want to eat something. Care to comment? Cano, commit algo You're going to spend too much money. Vase save. I got Star De Niro, the mice I will say my gosh, star dinero de don't worry if you don't get all the extra information words right thes will come as you progress in Portuguese on In fact, if you take the three minute Portuguese courses, you'll find lots of extra words that you can put a the end off structure one. How would you say I must find the hotel? Never win control. Wartelle de Bruin Contra Wartelle. I'm going to change it now is that we have changed it room without water. Modahl, did you remember to take the are off the end off mood are before you put the law on the end and then put the accent on the A So we get more. That'll room Ordell Aguada. I'm going to change it now You're going to buy too much survival. Say compiled Demise Survival saint Compared to mice, I want to buy something here. Care hokum, prattled wacky Gail comprar algo Rocky. The word careful means I want, but you can also translate it as I would like. And so in Portuguese they don't tend to use. I would like they used care home instead. So in English, we tend to use, I would like rather than I want, whereas in Portuguese, they tend to use I want rather than I would like and say, Well here care whole Quite a lot in Portuguese care who comprise Al Karaki. 26. Portuguese Structure 1 Chapter 7g: How would you say in Portuguese? You can buy it in Lisbon. Voss aboard Complejo English bowler Voice support Comprado English bore. You must drink something. Well, Say David. Better voice. Say Davy. Very well. I can bring it tomorrow. Both of Brazil. LaMagna Apostle Brazell Oh, ammonia. You can buy something for Maria Vaasa Boot Camp Al Para Maria Voss A. Both comprise a group. Ana Maria. I can buy it today. Fossil comprado post war I can buy it later. Fossil Comprado my starter Both the compiler My started. I can buy it tomorrow. Post hoc umbrella ammonia, both of ammonia. I want to see Lisbon tomorrow. Care who? Verrill Ishbo Ammonia care Who? Very Lisboa ammonia. 27. Portuguese Structure 1 Chapter 7h: How would you say in Portuguese? You have to call The nap will say definitely. Guards in that vos a dazzling are Zeenat I'm going to cause in that tomorrow fully Garzon, that ammonia volley Garzon at ammonia. I want to spend three weeks there. Care Opus are fresh The manager care apostles pressure management I'm going to order the chicken for Paolo. Who paid, You know Frank Powell. Vu Pitino. Frank para power. I must change the reservation they have moved out of. They have a mood. Are ours ever? I must go now. There were Aguada they ever were Agora. You must eat something, Voss. A derrick America Vos A dairy Camaro. You can buy something here. Vos A bold, comparable wacky I'm going to do it later. Vuvuzela, my started vuvuzela My start so far as a low means to do it And so you take fuzzier which is to do take the are off the end and then put the circum flex accent on the e before hooking the loop on the ends They get facil to do it. Vuvuzela My start 28. Portuguese Structure 1 Chapter 7i: How would you say in Portuguese you have to be in Lisbon tomorrow. Vos a day via star English Bow ammonia Voss A day via star English bow ammonia You have to start soon. Voss A day vehicle. Masada local Most say David comments are low. You can buy something at the hotel. I will support comply now I will tell. We will stay poor The complaint Algo hotel. You can bring it for Josie Voss, a podiatrist. Use a board that has a low power. You must change it now. I will say Davy Model water. I will say David Mood Alfaguara. I have to call power. They have league are Powell. They have league Are Powell. I have to be in Porto tomorrow. Devilish star Import to ammonia. Never wear start import toe ammonia. You have to be that soon, Voss. A day via Starla logo. David. I'm going to buy it today. Vocal wars 29. Portuguese Structure 1 Chapter 8a: so there you have it. The fares Porter G structure in a non question form. Voss a port comeere Hockey. You can eat here. So you have the infinitive carrier, the infinitive and then extra information on the end. Let's now do a quick recap off all the question words. Came by will say they're important. Go game viable. Say they're important. Go 33. Portuguese Structure 1 Chapter 9a: There's one more useful thing that you can do to this structure. Quiet easily. Make it negative. You can change the infinitive carriers from positive to negative really easily in Portuguese, in English. It's just a matter of putting a little n apostrophe t after the verb. For example, Why are you going to Lisbon? Becomes Why aren't you going to Lisbon? Ah, can I go with you in the negative? Would become. Can't I go with you? Or when can you do it would become When can you do it in Portuguese? It's almost a simple all you have to do to turn the infinitive carriers negative is put the little word now in front of it. The word now means no. If there's a bossy in the in vintage of Carrier, the now comes after the bossy and in front of the next word, for example, forsake here means do you want I will say now here means Don't you want you can do this with any off the infinitive carriers. So possible means can I now possible means cont. I voss a bold means Can you se na poured means current. You Vucic here was Do you want both a now. Here. Don't you want viable? See? Are you going now? Viable? See? Aren't you going? So then now comes directly in front. Off the infinitive Carry part that isn't bossy. So we get now. Vie Bossy. Aren't you going? Devereux was Do I have to? Almost I Well, that becomes known devil. Which means don't I have to? David will say. Do you have to Almost you in the negative. That becomes now. David will say. Which means Don't you have to? So how would you say in Portuguese? Why can't I go with you? Poor Canopus were conversation poor can opposed to wear Converse. Say, what can you bring? Kucova? Xena portrays here. Kucova Zana portrays here. Aren't you going to buy something for Maria now? Viable? Say comprar algo para Maria now viable. Say comprar algo para Maria. 34. Portuguese Structure 1 Chapter 9b: How would you say in Portuguese? Him? Can't I call came now. Partially guard came now possibly guard. Why can't you do it later? Particle Say now put for sale on my start Portico Hussein, a port. If I sell my starter now, you can also turn the non question infinitive carriers Negative in the exact same way as the question infinitives or you have to do is put now in front of them. For example, boss, Full means I can. And now post means I can't on again. You can do this with any off the infinitive carriers in the non question form. So fossil was I can. And now boss Will means I can't Voss aboard means you can I will say now pulled means you can Voss a care means you want. I will say now here means you don't want. And so if you can see the pattern, if there's a bossy involved and it's at the start, put the now after the bossy so we'll save. I means you're going when the negative we get Voss A Now by You're not going. Devil means I'm most on. And now they have you means I must not well said ever means you must. I will say now Dave means you must not. Caro means I want on now. Care means I don't want on Finally Vou means I'm going And now you means I'm not going So how would you say in Portuguese? I can't do it today. No postal Fazal award now possible Fazeli wash You can't eat the chocolate Vasenina port Camaro Took a lot Hussein Apple Comeere I must not spend too much money now they've got started. The natal Diminish! Now they've got started. The natal! The mice! You must not call Paulo. I will say now dabbling are Powell. I will say now they've league our pal. I don't want to eat here now care Com Iraqi now care Com Iraqi I'm not going to hire it. I'm going to buy it now of a while ago. Improbable now. Well, go 35. Portuguese Structure 1 Chapter 10: here is the outline off structure one in Portuguese. You have the question. Would the inventive carrier on the infinitive and then, in the end, you can have extra information? What you can do to practice structure one on to become fluent in how to use it is makeup questions on Repeat them again and again and again once you've repeated the same question a few times. Try without stopping to change one part of it. For example, on the postal. Comeere on both Come here on the both comeere on the postal bag are on the postal bag are on the postal Pagar, who composed Comeere, who proposed to come here on by doing that quickly over and over, you'll help to get your tongue around this structure on. What will happen eventually is that you'll be able to use it without thinking it had become a reflex. So what you can do is get a piece of paper right down the outline off the structure and then practice it over and over, making up different questions. Don't forget that you can also use this structure as a non question simply by taking the question word away from the front, Andi, taking the question mark away from the end on you can make them negative by putting the word now in front of the infinitive carriers. Unless, of course, the infinitive carrier starts with Foresee, in which case the word now comes after Morsi. You can add as many infinitives to your list as you want every time you learn a new verb added to your infinitive list. Similarly, you can add as much extra information as you want on screen is just an example off some of the infinitives on some of the extra information moves that you can use, but both these lists are almost endless. 36.
