About This Class

The whole of the French language can be broken down into several different structures. If you take any sentence from any French book or any utterance, you will see that it fits into one of these structures.

I remember one weekend, I was writing some lessons for the week ahead, when I suddenly realised this. I noticed that there are a certain number of structures in French, and that every sentence follows one of these structures. I spent the rest of the weekend working out all the structures, and I wrote them all down.

Every structure you learn gives you the ability to say a huge amount. Some structures are used more than others, but all the structures together make up the whole French language. Once you’ve learnt how a structure works, all you have to do is insert different words into the slots and you have a sentence.

This course introduces you to structure 3. I’ve limited each course to one structure so as not to overburden you. By looking at just one structure at a time, you can really get to grips with it and understand its usage. It will help to clarify the French language and make it more like a reflex rather than something you have to think about as is it were a maths equation.

Each structure can also help to propel you to fluency; if you can manipulate the structures at high speed, you can start to say anything you want without having to thing about how to say it.

This course contains plenty of practice opportunities for you to revise what you’ve learnt and it also contains some hints and tips on how best to learn and memorise the structures and the vocabulary that goes with them. You’ll learn how to make questions out of structure 3, how to make statements and how to turn positive statements negative.

The Building Structures in French series is set out using the same learning techniques as the 3 Minute French courses. You can work through the course in three minute chunks, enabling anybody to learn French, no matter how little time you have.

PROGRESS TO THE NEXT COURSE

Once you have finished this course, you can continue onto the next course where you’ll learn all about structure 2 in French. Here are the links for all the Building Structures courses currently available on SkillShare:

1. French Structure 3 Introduction: more Selebi Avenue. Hello and welcome to building structures in French structure three. I'm carrying on dime a language to debase in the UK and I wrote this course to happen to learn to speak French. The whole of the French language is made up off a number of structures. Every sentence in French follows one of these structures. 2. French Structure 3 Chapter 1: structure. Three. Structure three is very similar to structure one. The only difference is the infinitive carrier is in the past tense instead of the present like structure one. It consists of just three parts, and here is an example of it in use. Could Valjevo, Margie of Woody, Eva, Margie Let's break this truck to down into its three components and give each component a name. Could is a question word. Meaning what? Valjevo is a past infinitive carrier. Meaning did you want? And more G is an infinitive, meaning to eat. Valjevo. What did you want to eat? A question word. A past inventive carrier. Andan infinitive. So those are the three components you want. Hope you remember what an infinitive Carrie reads from structure warn. But if not, here's a quick reminder. An infinitive carrier is any word that you comport an infinitive On the end off the inventive carriers that we learned in structure one. We're all in the present tense. We had the following Lesia Asia. Meaning can I of evil Meaning can you level level means Do you want Olivo? Liviu means are you going? Do I jer wiser means do I have to almost I de Beibu, Dave, Abel means, do you have to or most you well, in structure three, the infinitive carriers we're going to learn will all be in the past tense. We've already seen one Valjevo. Meaning did you want? We have also already learned all the question words we had you meaning? Where could meaning what? Makayla? Which means that what time Cool. Meaning when come on. Which means how kill Meaning which or which one? Roqua Which means why come young meaning how much or how many cumbia undertone means how long were literally how much time key means who or whom, just like with the other two structures, we can change any of the three parts in structure three, for example. Instead of saying could at the start, which means what we could change it to you. Meaning where so, Kurt Valjevo Mongie means. What did you want to eat? And if we change to do we get Huvelle even more? Where did you want to eat? Or we could change it to calm, which means when we get calm. Valjevo. Muji, when did you want to eat? So cook Valjevo more J Valjevo and calm so notice how the rest of the question doesn't change. Just because you've changed the question would the bullion room Andrzej Pot which means did you want to eat? Stay the same. 3. French Structure 3 Chapter 2a: using structure three. There are three parts of structure. Three. The question word the infinitive carry in the past tense on the infinitive. We already know the question words Onda. We also have a good collection off infinitives here. Just a few of the infinitives that relent in the first structure. We had more g mean to eat. Why meaning to drink come one day, which means to order, I said, Hey, meaning to try. Hey, hey! Which means to pay fair, which can mean either to do or to make Louis meaning to hire away means to go Ponder means to take have well means tohave. Sean J. Means to change Ash Day means to buy. Come on, say means to start ETA means to be back to year means. To leave Sathiah is to go out apart. They means to bring diplomacy means to spend money. Bessie. It's a spend time. Why means to see happily means to cool arrest? They means to stay. Two way is to find and dear means to tell or to say. But what about the infinitive carriers in the past tense? Well, let's start with the U forms off these. You'll notice that they all end in the letters I e. Zed pronounced e So we've already had fully able, but we've now got prove evil movie able means Could you movie a room? Could you or were you able to prove evil? Valjevo have already said means Did you want Vody able? Duvier evil divvy able means. Did you have to deviate Vu and Ali? A view Valjevo means. Were you going, Valjevo? So you might notice that all these verbs and in the letters i e zed Yea. And then there's a hyphen on. The word of all this is very similar to the present tense. In the present tense, we had prove able, which was Can you level? Do you want Dave Abel? Do you have to? Al Evil, Are you going? And then the difference between these on the present tense is that the past tense has an extra I in the middle. So prove evil. Valjevo Devi able and Valjevo 4. French Structure 3 Chapter 2b: Let's have a practice with these new past tense infinitive carriers. How do you say infringe? What did you want to bring? Could believe Weapon Valjevo, a party. When did you have to leave corn? Deviate Paktia. Deviate, Bhupati, What did you want to do? Covered evil. Fair Cookeville. Evil fair. Where did you have to go? Who deviate you, Ali? Who do be able today? Whom did you want to call? Key. Valjevo. Happily key. Valjevo. Happily by building questions. Instructor three, you'll not only get more familiarized with vocabulary on the structure, but you'll also without even trying, reduced the time it takes for you to string a sentence together in French. So after a few more practice, translations have the same French. Where were you going To stay. Who will leave or stay? Well, you gave us stay. When did you want to eat? Call. What would you see? To prove a Beauvois could prove even watch! How much did you have to pay? Come beyond Deviate. You pay Cumbia Deviate, You pay. What were you going to say? Carry a Boudia Kalyan Judea! So that would occur. Get shortened to Qu apostrophe when you put it in front of a vow. Carry evil dear. Why did you want to leave Pacquiao? Believe Patty, Valuable data 5. French Structure 3 Chapter 2c: having the same French. What did you have to do? Good. To be able fair Could do be able fair. What were you going to do, Carrie? Evil fair can't even fair. Where could you eat? You prove even more who will be able? When were you going to go out? Contact gave you soft Here. The word gone end in the letter D, which isn't pronounced normally. When you place it in front of a word that starts with a vowel, then the letter D sounds a little bit like a t. So you get content evos off tear for when we're going to go out. Cos will sell to you How much we're going to bring. Come? Yeah, I leave a party. Cumbia gave weapon. Well, you can liaise the s on the end of war with the AM start of Apple Day and you can connect it. Cumbia Olivos, A party. Which one? We're going to buy. Kill. Leave. Washed. Okay. Oliver, how are you going to pay? Common Gave you pay. Common. Tell you pay. What could you buy? Could prove you've washed. Could believe that. Stay. Where did you want to go? Move. We've Ouali who believe was away. Why did you want to go? Pacquiao believe Wally. What would you do? Could prove evil. Fair, couple of evil fair. 6. French Structure 3 Chapter 2d: How would you say in French? Which one did you want to buy? Kill! Believe! Washed, kill. Live with us. Stay. Why did you have to go? Quite the vive welli Deviate easily. How much did you want to spend? Come beyond. Gave you. They won't say Cumbia record. You go. Who proved tables away? Who will be able today? Where were you going to go. Who? Valjevo. Ali? Who was that? Whom did you have to call? Key. Do gave was happily key. Deviate was up early. What did you have to take? Good to be able. Ponta could deviate. Ponta, where did you want to eat? Who? Who we going to call Key? I live happily key Olivos. Happily! Where did you want to stay? Valjevo Day. Valjevo has stayed. Where could you stay? Who? Bouvier. Who has stay? Who? Bouvier, who has stayed? What did you want to say? Valjevo, Dear cover the able dear 7. French Structure 3 Chapter 3: manipulating structure. Three. You can manipulate structure three in many different ways. Just like record with structures one and two, for example, you can take certain bits out to make different types of questions. You don't always have to stick all three parts together. Let's see what happens when you don't put the question. Would on How do you say in French? Did you want to eat Woody? A few more, Rudy A blue Moon Jae. So this was uses the past inventive carrier and then an infinitive with no question word at the start. How would you say in French? Did you want to eat here? Valjevo More J. C. Did you have to pay? Do be able. Paying. Deviate. You pay. Did you want to pay the bill for me? Would you pay a lot? You pay a lot. Now let's see what happens if you don't port an infinitive on the end. How would you say in French? What did you want? Could you evil curveball Evil. So structure three is made up of three parts. But you can miss off one of the parts. You could miss off the question word and just use the infinitive carrier in the past tense . And the infinitive such as Valjevo, Moon Jae Did you want to eat? Or you could miss off the infinitive from the end and just have the question word. Andi Infinitive Carrier Cover evil. What did you want? 8. French Structure 3 Chapter 4a: as a non question. So far, we've only looked at Structure three in a question format. However, you can also use it in a non question. Let's just start this chapter with a quick recap off the structure in the question for that structure. Three in the question format consists off just three parts. Valjevo, ma J What did you want to eat? So you got a question with a past infinitive carrier and an infinitive, just like with your structures, you can also add the optional fourth part, the extra information and get some things such as Kurt Volume room on Jay. Yeah, What did you want to eat yesterday? To use this structure when you're not asking a question is quite simple. Just like before you take the question. Would off Andi flip the infinitive carrier around? You probably noticed that the inventive carriers are made up off to parts even in the past tense. You simply flip them around to make them into a non question. Let me show you what I mean. Let's compare a question on a non question in the structure. Three format curve will be able fair means what did you want to do Well, if you take the question word off and flip around the voluble we get volley. A fair you wanted to do is that we can put things on the end of that and get sentences such as really a fast that year. You wanted to do that yesterday. So the inventive carry of William means did you want? And if you flip it around, you get vou Warrior, which means you wanted volume on J. C. You wanted to eat here, Will you wave lap? Yeah. You wanted to see Pierre Julia. You wanted to go to Paris? Let's look at the list off the past tense infinitive carriers that we've learned so far in the question format. And then let's look at the same list in the non question for Mitt. So we've got a movie. A view poor be able means Could you or were you able to? Well, then, if you switch it around, you get vou Bouvier Rupo v eight, which means you could or you were able to Valjevo. Valjevo means did you want? And if you switch them around, we get Voglia Voglia you wanted Do be able Deviate. Did you have to and voodoo V a Rudy v A means you have to an evil Valjevo means were you going? And usually a without a means you were going. 9. French Structure 3 Chapter 4b: So how would you say in French? You wanted to buy something here for Pierre Voglia has taken officially. See Pope? Yeah. Volume has taken control of the pope here. You're going to buy it tomorrow? Usually a last stand. A man. Was there a lasted amount? You could see it. A group of yet of while a group of yellow you have to pay. The bill would deviate a lot easier, would deviate a lot. You were going to buy something at the supermarket. Rosalie. As taken to show off. Take a You were going to buy some cheese? Usually a STD. Former Brasilia stadium for Marc. You're going to be here early. Usually a prosciutto Tracy toe. So that's the third friend structure in a non question form volume on J. C. Yeah. You wanted to eat here yesterday. So you've got Voglia, a past infinitive carrier, mo J an infinitive and then e c e air or some extra information words you wanted to eat here yesterday 10. French Structure 3 Chapter 5a: infinitive carriers in the past. So far, we've only looked at the infinitive carriers in the past four. You'll notice that they all end in I e. Zed. We've had a movie, A view meaning Could you or were you able to Valjevo means Did you want deviate you did you have to And I gave meaning Were you going so valuable? Means did you want? But where did it come from? Let's take the verb Voula which is where Valjevo comes from And I conjugated in the past tense for you So you are means to want and the past tense we get the following Julie Julie means I wanted to relay to Ole Means you wanted in and l vallee he'll and n fully he or she wanted new volume new video we wanted Will you Julia you wanted and ill vallee ill vallee they wanted So that's the von wire which means to want in the past tense in French If you've looked at structure to then you'll already be familiar with all the persons I you he she etcetera on why there are two words for you But I'll just explain quickly In case you haven't seems talked to To and vou both mean you in French two is used when you're talking to one person that you know quite well. Whereas vou is used when either you're talking to more than one person or you're talking to somebody you don't know too well. So if you're talking to one friend, you can use to in every other sense you would use of all. So you're talking to a group of people. Whether you know them or not, you would always call them voom if you want to call them you. And if you're talking to one person you don't know very well you would call them So two is the singular in form a word for you and vou is the singular formal or the plural word for you. Now you might also have noticed that the azure to hell and l and eel meaning wave forms of the verb sound identical is your valet to fully ill or L vallee and he'll vallee they all found identical fully is just dispelling that's different and so on that they wanted part IV Ole. Even though you've got all those letters in the end, you still pronounce it fully so you don't pronounce the NT at all. The only differences occur for the we and the U formal version. The full we get new video and who value those similarities in pronunciation will become very useful as we look at different verbs in the past tense. So we've got Julie. I wanted to bully you wanted Ill and El Bulli. He and she wanted new video. We wanted volleyer you wanted and it really they wanted. 11. French Structure 3 Chapter 5b: If you look at the last letters off the viola in the past tense, you'll see we've got a I s unusually a I s on to fully a i t on ile and elderly i o Ennis on new volume i e zed on Julia on a i e n t on he'll blame. Well, these endings are actually the same endings on all off the infinitive carriers in the past tense. So let's look at another infinitive carrier verb. So you can see that they're the same we've already had Do be a view, which means did you have to? And this comes from the verb devoir Now devoir means to have to. And so, in the past tense we get is your Duveen. I had to to divvy you had to in and elder vein he and she had to no deal. We had to votive. Yea, you had to and he'll do very they had to. And so you'll notice there are those letters again. In the end, A i s a s h i t Ioannis ie said a i e n t to turn the infinitive carriers in the past tense into a question all you have to do is in vet, for example. Duvalier means you wanted and Valjevo means did you want? So here are the two waves voir and devoir as questions in the past tense Malaysia did I want relate to Did you want volatility or volatility? Did he want George? Did she want? And so the T on the end of the valley here is pronounced because the next word starts with a vowel. So when a word ends in a continent, you can pronounce the constant if the next word starts with a vowel. So bullet deal and bullet tail Wiljan new. Did we want Valjevo? Did you want and Violet Ill did they want? And here's the past tense question conjugation off d'oeuvre. Do the Asia. Did I have to debate too? Did you have to? Do they, teal? And do they tell? Did he have to or did she have to Davion new Did we have to do V a view? Did you have to and debate ill Did they have to? So what you can do is write those down on a cue card. If you get one cue card on down the center of one side put the French for bourgeois so Malaysia valet to violating village. Tell William New Valjevo on bullet deal, then turn it over and down the center of the other side. Put the English Did I want did you want Did he or she want? Did we want did you want? And did they want? Then get a second cue card and do the same with def while damn essential one side Porton, do Basia debate to debate eel debate L D v o new DVD view on devotee and then turned to writing down the center of the other side. Put the English Did I have to? Did you have to? Did he or she have to? Did we have to? Did you have to? And did they have to? Then when you're practicing, only ever look at the English side and what you should do is pick one at random. And so pick Did we want and see if you remember it was in French. Julian New. Don't use the French side unless you really have to. Just remind yourself. Try your hardest to remember, and by only looking at the English side, you'll start to build your active vocabulary. So pick one at random. Did you have to and see if you can remember it, debate you And then what? You could also do it, Steve. You could make a practice sentence with that. So did you have to what he could say? What did you have to do? Could do that. You found could do they to fail. 12. French Structure 3 Chapter 5c: Let's see if you can translate some of these structures. Three questions. How would you say in French? How did he want to pay common quality pay? Come on, Wait! Eat a And so you should be familiar by now with the question words and also the infinitives on the end. But in the middle, we've got the past tense infinitive carriers. So don't worry if those take you a little bit more time to think through As you go on your practice more and you'll start to find that you can recall them a lot more quickly. Where did they have to go? Who deviated away? Who do it easily? What did we have to do? Could do the on new fair. Could do via new fair. Why did you have see Pierre for quite Viva YPF? What? Did he ever wipe here? What does she have to do yesterday? Could you be tell failure Could do you tell fat? Yeah. What did they want to do yesterday? Could bulletin fair? Yeah, have a little fat. Yeah. What time did you have to leave? Akello! Deviate, Bhupati, I can't deviate Bhupati here. So just to recap. So far we've seen two full infinitive carriers in the past. We've seen Want Voula is voor Asia. Did I want relate to? Did you want violet eel on bullet tail? Did he want in that she want Julian New? Did we want Valjevo? Did you want? And Violet Eel did they want? And then we saw Devoir, which means have to in the past tense, which is due Basia, Did I have to debate you? Did you have to do 18 on Debate 10? I mean, did he have to? And did she have to Davion new. Did we have to deviate? Did you have to and do? Great deal? Did they have to? 13. French Structure 3 Chapter 6a: more inventive carriers in the past. What we'll do now is look at the full forms off. Al gave all Which means were you going and pull V able, Which means could you in the past tense see if you can have a go at conjugating those verbs just by looking at the patterns off the words that we've learned so far, You already know how to say the full form in each of the inventive carriers in the past. So all you have to do is remove the eye. He's dead from the end of that and add these endings instead. A i s a eyes a i t i o n s i e zed a i e n t for example we already knew Valjevo meant Did you want? What we did was take the IEA's ed off the end of Julia on. We were left with full v O U l. And then we put different endings onto the end of that and hoped in a person vil Asia with Did I want volley to was did you want? They'll see the full part. The v o u l is still there. Will it till Onda Votel did he wanted? Did she want Julian New? Did we want Valjevo? Did you want on bullet eel? Did they want? And so what we've done is added the ending's A I s a I s a t Ioannis i e zed aie anti to the full part and then hooked on Jules to island. L knew vou and deal to get the I you he and she were you and they Well, let's see if you can do that with movie able. So prove evil means could you? So we take off the IEA's that and we're left with the pool part P O U V. And that's what we're gonna add. The endings on the web pouvoir means can. And so, in the past tense we get of Asia, could I prove it to Could you prove it ill And Patel, Could he and could she prove your new Could we movie a view? Could you prove it in? Could they? So they are all questions on Do we have to do to turn into a non question is flip the two words around and take away the hyphen so we get Jayapura means I could to prove a you could . It'll prove a and L Pool A. He couldn't she could. New Popeo. We could vu Bouvier, you could. And poof they could. That's what you could do is put that unto a que card put down the center of one side the French words and then down the central, you decide the English words, and then when you're practicing, only look at the English side and try. Remember what the French words were? 14. French Structure 3 Chapter 6b: let's do a few practice sentences with Beauvoir. How do you say in French? I could see Pierre. You prove a vap? Yeah, You prove a whap. Yeah. What could you see there? To prove evil? Viola could prove evolve Wala Could they help pretty lady? Prove it till today. What could he do? Couple retail fair. Her poor little fair. Now we've also seen the phrase Valjevo And we know it means were you going? And so this very comes from Ali, which means to go. But if you look at Ali a view and take off the I e. Zed then in the past tense, what we get is a leisure. Which means was I going? I laid to Which means were you going a late ill means? Was he going, Ali tell? Was she going Allione? New. Were we going, Ali? A view. Were you going? And a late eel? Were they going? And so again you'll notice that the I, you he she and they forms all sound the same. Ali Alesia away to Allah. Teal a little, a little. And so we have to do. Remember the sound, Ali And then for we and you that changes slightly to alien and Valjevo. To make this into a non question or you have to do is switch the two words around and so a leisure. But if you switch those two around, you get your on me. Now, whenever you put the word sure in front of a way that thoughts with a vowel dije becomes shortened to Ajay apostrophe. And so we have jelly means I was going jelly to Ali. You were going ill away, and L. Ali he was going and she was going news a Leo. We were going of lasagna. You were going and years away they were going. And so even though there's an a i e n t on the end of the they form, it's still just pronounced away. The E. N T. On the end is completely silent in French. 15. French Structure 3 Chapter 6c: How do you say in French? What was she going to do? Cal? It'll fare que tal fair. Who was he going to cool? Keleti Lepley key ality lap early They were going to stay Here is a layer estate EEC easily of a Stacy. I was going to speak jelly Polly jelly parley. So just to recap all four of the past tense inventive carries that we've had so far we've had Malaysia which means did I want way to Did you want villa teal and white tail means Did he wanted Did she want Julian New? Did we want Valjevo? Did you want and bullet eel means did they want? And so I noticed how the endings are a i s a s a i t I awareness i e Is it a i e n t on the i you he she and they forms all sound the same. Really? Then we had have to do Basia Did I have to do they to? Did you have to do a teal? And do they tell? Did he have to? And did she have to do be on new? Did we have to deviate you? Did You have to. And do they Teal Did they have to? So the ending's a i s s a t eyewitness i e zed aie nt are there again And they the i you he she and they forms all sound the same. Do they Dave? Asia debate YouTube 18 debate LGBT So there's no difference in pronunciation Then we had could prove Asia Could I prove a to Could you pull a teal and prove a tell? Could he and could she movie on new Could we v a view could you and prove it deal? Could they? For example, Ali a boom means were you going when you put a note upfront on a pat on the end and you get no evil power went you going? And no n e shortens to end apostrophe when you place it in front of a vow And that's what we get. Natalie Cooper. Meaning? Where you going? In fact, throughout all of this over the n e shortens to an apostrophe when it's placed in front of the infinitive carrier. And that's because they all start with left a nearly two pa went you going now? Little power and knowledge tell power. Wasn't he going? And wasn't she going naleo nouba? Weren't we going? So we have to do is change the infinitive carrier and flip it around. It will a veneer at what they're if California at why there they wanted to finish at three o'clock. So when the question format you have the very first and then the person joined together with a hyphen, rule it deal. But then, in the non question, you put the person first and then the verb. Usually then you can make it negatives that you have a negative question by putting no in front of the infinitive carrier and then pat at the very end of the inventive carrier Pacquiao. New little puzzle aQuantive A little early. Why didn't they want to go to say about a question word? Pacquiao the infinitive carry in the negative question. No volatile path and then an infinitive on the end away. What kind of a little Pozzuoli? Why didn't they want to go? And then you can turn the negative question into a negative non question simply by putting the person at the start Universal a puzzle here novel, a puzzle They didn't want to go.
