before I started making online courses I spent a good four years of my life as a brand advocate for digital brands, I worked with around four over that period. some were full time, part time contracts where they would give me a monthly job to do, record some video for that brand, review a product, get on a plane and fly to a place and give out product for prizes.

I would have to answer questions (if I knew the answers!) about the products and would often get a lot of feedback from people about the new hardware they were seeing. after a while, i realized it would make my job easier if I just recorded an audio podcast with people and if they were ok with it afterward publish that live for for the world to hear.

I learned a lot about recording interviews, getting prepared before the recording, during and the distribution side afterward, what people expect and the no1 question that most people ask when you ask them for an interview or recording! :)

1. 1.0 - introduction to audio interviews: Welcome back to a new course day 29 3 days left to go. Gonna be recording back to back today I'm in my nice warm top. My nice warm hat is getting closer to New Year on New Year's Eve, New Year's Day, and I'm looking forward to the transition into 2017 again, a new reason. Nude sense of self At the beginning off a year today, we're gonna be talking about audio interviews. Turning those boring networking meetings into productive media gathers from today equipment and cost outlay. You'll need to get started to start recording some audio and some brands that you should be probably looking at things to be aware off when you're doing an audio interview, things that can go wrong, things that could just destroy an interview process. You don't realize halfway through the interview that you got background noise to give you a few pointers in that direction. Five. Awesome ways to make sure your interview stands out from the rest on transitioning to making a regular podcasts on interactive show ideas. Let's get into this last one of three courses that I'll be recording today. Editing one Today Editing Yield to tomorrow and then I'll have New Year's Eve New Year's Day off, which will be awesome, right? Let's get into this. 2. 1.1 - equipment and brands i suggest: so I use IOS apple products. So this is all about really using products to do with the lightning dock connector. If you have an older IOS device, a fall for S five, any of those devices with the big, longer strip you can get converters. Find out from the manufacturers that it will work through the converted cause. I'm not always sure that I always use lightning dock connector devices now that go straight into the bottom of the phone and give you a digital import rather than just the audio input on the phone itself. So three routes I would probably go are Sennheiser with their digital clip, Mike, which is not expensive but around £100 a little bit more than what you would normally pay . But the sound quality is absolutely gorgeous. On one of those, Mike Zoom has a variety that looked like some kind of alien device to capturing the machine . I'm a little bit worried about how precarious those things are, so I wouldn't walk around with it too much with it plugged in. I would just have it immediately at the interview and plug it in and recorded like these x wide Mike's in a certain pattern to do stereo. Very good quality. Mike's do pick up a lot of background noise, So be very careful about your settings on that. Or look at something like the road. Smart love, which is kind of an entry level microphone. You'll get by with Smart Lab. You probably want to go a little bit high quality after that. For interviews where you see yourself with wanting less first past the mike back and forth between two people, you can get a adapter for the smart labs, called the S C six, which allows you to have two microphones, too. Smart labs into one input. What's lovely about this is that you can actually buy this as a pack, and it comes with two microphones. The SC six connector. Just Mike up your assets are the other person that you're interviewing on yourself talking , and you don't have to worry about passing the microphone back and forth. And what it does actually is it creates a new environment because it more relaxed. You're miked up. You're sitting in chairs opposite each other, and it's almost very conversational. So if you think you're gonna have a conversation with somebody. It's gonna be really interesting. Gonna be lots of advice, but you don't want it to be interviewed based. You kind of want to be relaxed and want to cut it up into snippets later. It's a good way of doing it because the other person doesn't feel like they're on the spot and therefore sort of clams up. So it's nice to have that additional feature. So if you want to do interviews where you both might at the same time the smart love with the SEC connecting a budget of around $100 UK us will get you started, you will be completely mobile. This is a completely mobile solution, so it's really good for doing podcasts on the go at networking events. I just at networking events when you talk to people having hardware, massive big pieces of camera and microphones condition be distracted for people. But having just something plugged into your mobile phone and then quickly clipped onto their tie or the top of their pocket there jacket Very easy to do. A quick style interview. The zoom, like I said, is grateful, capturing ambient sound for backing tracks so what I what I mean by this is it. Be great if you're in an airport or if you're at a networking event or if you're overhearing a conversation. I'm not saying that should go around recording other people's audio without them knowing about having a background audio layer be able to use in your video blocks, for instance, or maybe fuel podcast for different in between sections. I thought this idea would be quite nice in a coffee shop where there's a lot of background noise may be going on with people preparing coffee and food and just recalled that layer of audio and then record your podcast on top of that in a quiet space and mix the two together . And I've got some ideas for sort of kind of cinema. Graph full case stuff in in 2017. So look out for that 3. 1.2 - power tips for getting that interview: so some tips and for making sure that you get a good audio interview, don't be near entrances and exits or busy passer areas might seem an obvious thing to say. When you're in the moment, you don't realize maybe the amount of traffic going through a space and doors creaking and that background noise you might have the person in front of you and they might be just half a meter away and you're just doing the audio. But what really sets interview apart from somebody else's into is minimizing the amount of background noise that's happening. So if you could be tuned into that, if you've got headphones that you can put into your device, maybe into your zoom device to be able to hear what's going on in the background, remember, people are listening to this through there have phones, their their ears. They're not visually looking at somebody. You can kind of sacrifice a little bit tiny little bit when you're doing video. If it's interesting, video enough on the audio would really What makes a video stand out is the audio quality. If the video quality is really, really bad, the audio can save it but not the other way around. If it's only audio only, you really do need to get a good quality sound. Make sure your microphone is on. I know that's an obvious statement, but we do do this sometimes when we get to independently switched the microphone on, make sure the batteries are solid. And what I mean by that that that charged up. Maybe you need to change them for the interview is a really high level interview. Always change your batteries out. Make sure you get some really good. Rechargeable is go through that process of recharging your kit, either in the morning or in the night before you go out to do content at the event. If only one microphone. Remember toe point that microphone at the other person when they speak. Don't just keep on you and get entranced by what they're saying of. Forget to point the microphone in their direction. Remember, you're interviewing them. You're not just you listening to what they have to say. You have a remote audience that you're catering to, so remember to do the mic friend beckoned. Fall do a test run first and listen for any surface or contact issues with the clients. Make sure that they haven't got any kind of rustling T shirt or material or something on them that's making the microphones or staticky and nasty and double check that the levels are okay. You don't want to have a really quiet interview and then amp it up later and it sounds all noisy. You don't really want to be just amplifying the noise outdoors requires a dead cat muffler on the mic, even in light winds situations if you're doing stuff outside this dead cat here at the top left, made by road, Sure, really? Why? They call it a dead cow accident A little like a dead cat. But I kind of understand, like the for idea of it. But it just removes all of that light wind or any win that would touch the microphone and cause that kind of blown out sound really worthwhile investment because it doesn't cost a lot of money. 4. 1.3 - making your interviews stand out: decide on an interview length and try to keep to with some consistency. This will make your podcasts your audio interviews stand out from the rest. If people know what to expect from your audio interview that it's gonna be five or 10 minutes long, they can commit. That amount of time is when you jump around a lot and you do one for two minutes in 1 28 minutes. Move 30 minutes. People get used to a certain level of consistency to do, try and keep to that. Prepare the person with a possible questions card. We did this at South by Southwest. We had a postcard without you, R L on it, who we were sort of about section that was designed like a postcard, had five questions on it and that they could answer all of the questions. Or they could just answer one of them on they either. I prefer the into where I asked him the question. They replied all. They just read out the question to themselves and then replied to it. Now I could it together later. The majority of people that I interviewed in my time as a brand Africa asked a couple of questions. Who's this four and where is it going? Make sure that you cover that first before before going in and asking for the interests that a lot of people will just turn you down straight away. Let them know whether confined it online is very important. People love to share this out to their own social networks. Make sure you share it on your social network. Make sure they have an easy way to find it. Maybe put the link of the girl on the postcard and give them one of those postcards. That postcard can also be your business card. Considered the remote listener. What will give them the most knowledge out of the interview? Ask questions that help the remote audience. Don't just have a chat. If this person has been doing a specific job task or role or innovating in the space, find out the challenges that that person had to. The other people can learn from the date. The audio from the starts of people in the car. No, when it was recorded within that sort of 1st 10 15 seconds, make sure that you date and say what number episode is that a power tip from a very good friend called Jason. Jared and I've always remembered it. So don't forget to date, the audio is when people are skipping through audio, especially if they've downloaded your podcasts. They don't know which one have listened to. If they don't know what episode number it is or what data is. 5. 1.4 - the year of the hybrid streams: all right, then. So 2017 should be an interesting year for the fusion. I think off podcasts and video and streaming in general and the hybrids that are gonna come a kind of see using interviews as a drop in for regular segments. And from then, it might make it really easy to make a regular podcast. The reason why I suggested this is that we started to see a lot of these platforms amalgamated start to come together. Platforms could do the same thing. Instagram kind of duplicated a lot of the features of Snapchat this year, and I think we're going to see lots more platforms adopting some of the processes that other successful platforms are doing. So we're starting to see applications that pretty much could do a lot of things all at once have become kind of a Swiss Army knife off the digital tool, distribute into different channels. So you're audio that you record may also worked great on YouTube as well. I've seen a lot of audio podcasts use interactive media, interactive video, even some stock video with their podcast laid on the top of it put onto YouTube where they get a different kind of audience from their podcast audience. Obviously, they're still making money on YouTube from the AdSense views, people listening to it but also watching. At the same time, I can imagine that 2017 has more hybrids, dashboard style livestream shows with behind the scenes display. So as people are coming to an event, is this behind the scenes with sort of instagram Snapchat integrating in those little social snippets with the live stuff together? And I think somebody who really spends time honing that can imagine Casey Nice that in the sea CNN crew really coming out with some innovative ideas this year for doing remote audience development. Always be communicating to the remote audience. Don't forget to promote in stream as you're doing a live audio interview or even an offline interview. Don't forget to promote the other person's u R l don't wait till the end of the interview to push their links and say, Where can people find your lines? Start dropping those things in the middle. Say that that that person lives at this website and you've written this book. Do your research before you doing these audio interviews. It will just make the audio interview below a little bit nice. And don't forget to promote your own newsletters and links where people can subscribe to listening to more of your shows. 6. 1.5 - take part in the project: Okay. Five step project. Go to your project in the bar below. Put an awesome project title in the project. Workspace. Be creative. Include pictures and the steps that you talk. Let me know about your audio interviewing experiences. Have you ever done any? Are you going to do some in 2017? What has been holding you back? Maybe if you haven't got the confidence to do it Or maybe you're overconfident. But the quality is not good. I would love to have a dialogue about this. Pick a sweet cover image. If you don't have one, go across to Nome. Adopt pictures. There's lots of CC zero creative common pictures there for free. Click on the save button and you're done. 7. 1.6 - the roundup: All right, then. The round up. Being brave enough to experiment with digital tools to capture things like audio can help with networking your own work as well. So if you're at a networking event and you're feeling a little bit nervous, you don't know anybody. There may be your first time getting him with a few of the people and asking if you could do a quick 30 seconds, 62nd elevator, pitch style podcast, asking them what they do. I created an event where people turned up eight o'clock in the morning on we get a round table. Think about who was at the table what was good. What was bad was indifferent about their week. We put that out podcast, we'll have breakfast together. And then everybody went off their day jobs at 9 a.m. In the morning on a Friday morning. So they had a break for the weekend and they got to talk about that week. And just simple things like that can really increase your networking. People remember. Oh, you're the audio guy. You're the podcast guy. You the video guy. Could you come and do this for us? And I had work like building app store videos for people who are at makers. And it's interesting what kind of work comes out when people can see that you've got the abilities and skills and talents to be able to not only record that content balls are distributed on the Web. How many times have you been to a networking night and really enjoyed a conversation and wish you recorded it? I've probably done that about 20 times in my life, gone through a chat with somebody for about 30 minutes and then realize that should have been recorded near the end of it. Thought there's some really good value there, some good giveaway that should it could take away information that should have given out to see the rest of the world. Having an archive of digital assets of recorded media can be used to enhance your existing digital presence. Seems like an obvious thing to say, really. But if you are a graphic designer, video designer, video streamer, cameramen, whatever it is that you do as a trade, whatever pays your bills brings the money In doing these little things of side projects. Little side hustles can bring about awareness to your of the projects. Have you enjoyed this? I'm available, of course, for audio interviews.
