1. Class Trailer: Do you need some jumping pumpkins for your Halloween video? Then you should take a look at this course. This class will teach you one of the 12 key principles of animation, squash and stretch for our class project. We will be making an animated Halloween card at your friend's name to this card and send them a personalized gift. Or add these bouncing pumpkins to your scary video project. The class requirements are a computer or tablet with the program. Rough Animator. A drawing tablet is recommended for this class as well. If you're not familiar with Rough animator, don't worry, it's only $5 it's pretty easy to pick up. This class is for beginners, but animation fans and professionals are also welcome. Hi there. My name is Patrick Davidson, demographics freelancer and part time animators. I've been animating for over 20 years now, and I've worked on projects from TV commercials to feature films. I worked mainly in two D or hand drawn animation. My favorite personal animated projects are the Web comedy series Traveling Green goes in my action. Siri's trapped. I'm also an ex pat in California living in my new adopted country of Costa Rica, but enough about me. Let's get into this class 2. Drawing a Pumpkin: Welcome to today's class. First thing we want to do is we want to launch a rough animator new project. So let's do that. And I'm gonna make this 1920 by 10 80 30 frames per second hit, okay? And I'm going to zoom out to see my canvas here. Okay, So the first thing that I want to do is I want to draw our pumpkin. So let's zoom in a little bit and grab our brush. Grab. Ah, the color black. And so I'm just gonna draw a basic pumpkin and given with some eyes, and I'm going to give him a big smiley mouth. Man, I'm gonna add a couple of teeth, grab my eraser and drop my racer size down a little bit. And let's just give him some pumpkin teeth here. And then let's go ahead and fill in the eyes in the mouth and let's go and add a little bit of detail here. So there. Okay, Now, let's go ahead and give him some color. So that's picking orange. And let's fill that looks good. You can see, though, that I'm missing some white here, so we're gonna grab my brush tool and I'm gonna select. Usually it's on draws in front, let's switch to draws behind. And then I can just fill in those gaps there just like that and go grab ourselves a green and do the same thing here and and grab a brush again and feel that in. Okay, so we've got our basic pumpkin here, So let's zoom out to our canvas, and what I want to do is I want to shrink it down a little bit. So let's grab the lasso tool. Let's just draw all the way around and then I can move him and the zoom in there. So now we can see the, um, scaling tools and let's just scale them down like that. And then when I'm done, let's zoom out. That's about the size that I want. Let me place him in about the bottom center here, and then I'm gonna click here to de Select. So now we've resized our pumpkin and put him in the center 3. Squashing and Stretching: The next thing we want to do is we want to start animating the pumpkin. And there's two ways that we can do this. We could just redraw the pumpkin every time. Or we can use the same drawing and just stretch and squeeze the drawing. And that's what we're going to do. And it should be a little bit faster. So let's do one more layer here, man. Ad empty layer. I'm actually gonna move that below layer one, and I'm just gonna grab a red. And I'm just gonna straw a line about there. Okay, so this line is going to be my guide. We're gonna have the pumpkin bounce up and come back down, and we're gonna have it cycle up and down. Just keep bouncing. So the first drawing is going to be here, and then we're actually going to do as the pumpkin bounces up. We're gonna have more drawings here and more drawings here in less in the center. So I'm gonna mark those drawings. I wanna have one. They're basically two drawings that air touching the ground here, and it's going to shoot up, so we'll give one about their one about there and then it slows down here. So we're gonna need more drawings here, so I'm gonna do something like that so they'll give us 123456788 drawings. That would be about good. You can do this with about 10 drawings if you want, but this should work, and we can always go back and adjust later. So with this as our guide, let's go ahead. I'm gonna call this guide and then I'll call this pumpkin. So now what we can do is we can go to our pumpkin layer and I'm going to click Add drawing and I'm going to duplicate after. And that's going to give us the same drawing on a different frame. And now what I want to do. Let's go back to guide and let's make this about nine frames long. Okay, so let's take this pumpkin frame and let's select it and then let's squish it. So we're doing squash and stretch for this, and so we're gonna bring it down just a little bit, and now I want to make sure you're still on that baseline. So let's hit onion skin. I want to keep the bottom line of him on the bottom line of the other one. So he's stretched out and squished down and let's go ahead and exaggerated a little bit more. Then we click off and we're done. So let's go back to the original drawing. I'm going to duplicate that, and then I want to get that on the other side of this. So let's go over and hit this one, okay? And now what we want to do is we want to select the whole thing, and then I want to stretch him like that, and then we're gonna move him. But I want to keep that baseline there. So let's do that. And I might even stretch him a little bit more and try and keep him in the center, okay? And then we'll diesel ect. Okay, then I can go ahead and use this as my next joins. Let's duplicate that one, and then let's select that one. And now we're gonna shoot him up to about this level here. So let's go ahead and try and keep this line about the center. Well, actually, we can use it as the baseline. Let's try that. All right? And I'm gonna even make him a little bit skinny and a little bit taller, cause here's where he's giving his Mo mentum decent like that. And let's duplicate that again. And let's grab that new drawing and let's move him up to the next line here. Okay? And I could skew him a little bit more if I wanted to, but we could probably leave him. He'll be all right, de Select and Lendl's duplicate that one. And now we're on here. We're on frame. Six. You can see we've got six joins. 12345 So, run or sixth drawing? Let's grab him. Bring him up to about this line here. And I'm going to bring him down a little bit cause we're gonna run out of room towards the top here. So let's do that and then decently. Then let's duplicate that. Let's grab that guy. Let's bring him up. And now what we're gonna do is we're gonna start bringing him back to his original form, so he's going to start. He's gonna start coming back to the more of, ah, pumpkin shape pretty good. Then let's duplicate that one. Grab that one. Move him up a little bit more. And then again, let's bring him back to that original pumpkin shape. And at this point, what I want to do is I want to go grab that original pumpkin and let's duplicate that. And so that's what we're just duplicated here. So let's move that all the way to here. So to do that, we just tap this until we get it all the way there. Now it's our final drawing, and I congrats, this original drawing, and you can see when we get him towards the top here, he's gonna be back to his original shape. And so that's why I wanted to grab the first drawing. And let's go ahead and maybe put him right about there, okay? And d select. Okay, now, at this point, we've got a decision to make, so we can either go back down duplicating loop. So he goes all the way back down by hand, like we've just done, or we can create a cycle and let the cycle loop him back down. So I'm gonna show you both ways of doing that right now. 4. Looping Our Animation: So let's go ahead and duplicate this layer. So we have. There are two options, but I'm gonna turn the capacity down on one. We're gonna deal with the original layer here, so let's do a cycle. So let's get to the end here. Let's add a drawing after and now we're gonna click make cycle and we want that cycle to cover all of the drawings there. So let's go from 8 to 9 here. Now it's grabbing all of the site, all of the images. And now we need to make our cycle. So we start adding the frames to it. But you'll notice if I scrub it. It's bouncing from there to there. Me. Let me turn our guide off. Need that right now and we don't want that. So the trick is, we come down here, we have our cycle selected and we switch our in our tool options. We've got cycle forward and back forwards. We're gonna switch it to that. And what it's doing is it's making these drawings repeat in reverse order and there is going down. So let's go ahead and keep adding a few more frames and then there at this frame at this frame. He's back to the original drawing, so let's go ahead and loop that and see what that looks like. I'm gonna turn off onion skin real quick and hit play, so that's how you can loop it, using the cycle making cycle tool. Now that can get a little bit confusing if you're trying to do your timing. So what I'm going to recommend is the second option here, and that is going to be on this layer. So pay attention to pumpkin copy layer, and what we're going to do here is, once we get to hear, the next drawing is going to be this drawing. So what I can do is I select this. I'm going to duplicate that, and then I want to move that to the other side. So let's do that. So what? You go from there to there and back down, and we just do that all the way until we get to this frame. But that could be a little confusing because you can't see the thumbnails. So the trick is you just have to pay attention that you're duplicating the correct images. So this we're going to use this green line here as our center, our top most pumpkin we're gonna and we're going to go backwards from there. So we've got this one done when you got to go and make this one and we're gonna is gonna duplicate that, and then we want to get it all the way here. So we need to hit this 123 times there, and he's starting to come back down. So So if using this line as our guide of a center, we've got to done so let's go back to and then we need to make this one. So let's duplicate that after and let's just get it all the way to the end. So being Bang, bang, bang there. So now we've got 123 done. So let's come back. 123 So we need to duplicate this one and move him all the way to the end. And now we've got 1234 So we're going to come back. 1234 We need to duplicate this one. Get him all the way to the end. And now we've got five done. So let's go. 12345 we need to do this one. Duplicate that and gave him all the way to the end. And so now we've got six. So it's 123456 This one duplicated move model a way to the end. The little, um, repetitive. But we're almost done here. So we're gonna go back to the original drawing, duplicated, moving to the end. They're so we should be done. So again, we're not paying attention to this layer anymore. We should have our full loop like that. So let's go ahead and play that. And that looks pretty good. So I'm going to go ahead and delete this layer because we're not going to use the make cycle. So let's modify layer, delete layer. And let's just rename this pumpkin one, okay? 5. Adjusting Our Timing: So now we've got our full cycle going from the starting position up and then back down to the starting position, which is here. But I don't like the timing. It's a little fast. So what I want to do is I want to add a frame toe, all of these. So let's see if we can add it multiple, Grab all of them and it's not letting us duplicate the duration. So the only way that we can get the timing of this better is to do it by hand. So it shouldn't take us that long. There's 17 frame, so we have to do the 17 time. So I'm going to go ahead and just double up all of our frames here. And when I'm done with that, we'll check our timing again. And, well, they're still going to be some more timing, too. Uh, just with this and I will explain that in a second, Um, but so it's a little tedious there, you know. It's too bad. Rough Animator doesn't have a way to just duplicate all those frames at once, but this is not so bad. So now we've got us up. Teoh, 34 frames, and again we're at 30 frames a second. So this is should be just about a second of animation for this one bounce. So let's go to the beginning and let's just play it and see what it looks like then. And I like that timing a lot better. To me, that looks pretty good, so we could slow down even more by animating on the threes and, you know, making that three on all of these frames. But that's not what I want to do. I like the timing on the twos here. Let's talk a little bit more about timing. So if I hit play here, there's a pretty good hang time at the top here. I like that, but we could add a little bit more hang time. So let's bring him up to the very top, which is going to be this frame. And let's double that up. Let's see what that looks like if I make that four, so he's gonna hang at the top a little bit more. Let's just see what that looks like, and I might even like that a little bit better. Timing can actually create a style, so there's no exact right or wrong to how you contain things. It's just what looks good to you. So I kind of like that. Hang a little more hang time in the center there and at the bottom here. We've got two frames here, and we've got two frames here. So when it loops, we've actually got four frames at the bottom as well. So are bottom time is matching our top time. But like, for instance, let's just add, let's add, um, 12 frames here. So are let's add 15 frames. That's 1/2 a second. So he's gonna sit there for half a second now before, before the jump. So let's see what that looks like. So he's giving us a little more pause at the ground instead of just jump, jump, jump. And maybe you like that. Maybe you don't. So these are things in the timing that you can mess around with at this stage. So let's see if we can try and get this up to 60 because that would be a full two second loop. So let's just keep adding frames to this. Until we get this to 60 they're So now we've got a full two seconds for this to do one jump . And let's just go and play that. And that may or may not be too long for you. I'm gonna bring that back down, but, uh, again, timing things that you can play around with. So let's do that right about Okay, So let me save my work here real quick. Okay? Now, the next thing we want to do is we want to duplicate our pumpkin, and I'm gonna show you how to do that now. 6. Duplicating Layers: So let's go ahead and click. Edit multiple. And we get this black outline we want to do is we want to click and drag drag it out. And now you can see it's highlighted every frame on the layer and you can see here it's showing every frame on the layer And so we want to do is gonna grab our selection tool And we want to just draw in outline around that makes you were grabbing everything. And then from this point, we can click and drag, and I'm gonna bring it down a little into the right and then just click off of it. It's now de selected, and now we come up here and it's applying those changes. And so now we've moved him to the right. So I'm gonna call this pumpkin, right? And if we play it, you'll see him bouncing on the right there. It iss Okay, Now what I want to do is I want to make a duplicate it and put a pumpkin on the left. And so let's duplicate that layer by clicking modify layer, and we're gonna duplicate it. Okay, so let's call this pumpkin left. Okay. And again, we're going to edit multiple. Let's grab all of the drawings. Let's select. This is just what we did a second ago. So, like everything here and then we're gonna move it to the other side of the frame, and we're gonna drop it. Okay? De Select. Apply the changes. Let it go. Okay, Now, we should have two pumpkins bouncing this exactly the same time, and we dio okay, so we could do that 1/3 time and maybe add 1/3 bouncing pumpkin in the center. But at this point, what I want to do is I want to get them to bounce at different times, so let's figure out the best way to do that. 7. Making a Cycle: So at this stage, what I want to do is I do want to use our make cycle on one of the layers. So let's go ahead and pick the pumpkin on the left. I'm gonna bring down the opacity on the other ones. We can focus here, and what I want to do is I want to come here, We're gonna add, are drawing after blank drawing, and then we're going to hit make cycle. And now I want to pull that cycle out. So well, first thing, it's not selecting all the drawings, so I want to pull that all the way back. And so we just keep adding here, and you could see that this lion green line is moving to the left. They're now we've got the whole cycle selected, and now we need to add our cycle. And we do that on the drawing duration. So we just start adding to this and almost there, There, that's it right there. So let me pull back frame. All right? I'm gonna zoom my timeline horizontal zoom out a little bit so I can see the full timeline . And if I hit play, it should do a double Luke. Double bounce. 12 Okay, so now what I want to do is I want to add pumpkin on the right when you add frames here until he gets about center with this first jump. So let's just do that. Okay, then at the end here, he's back down, Pumpkin on the right is back down on the ground, and I'm gonna add frames here. What this is going to do is it's going to make the pumpkin on the right bounce less than the pumpkin on the left. But they're going to be in sync when they get to the end. They're both can be on the ground at the end of the cycle. And the reason we want to do this is we want at the end of this we want to make a looping GIF, and we don't want there to be any stuttering as the gift loops. So we want to make sure timing syncs up. So that's why we're doing the timing like this. So let's just go ahead and hit play, and it should alternately bounce the pumpkins, but be within timing so it loops, okay. And that's what we've achieved. So you can see as as it gets to the end here and loops back around. There's no jumping in between the animation it's moved. 8. Animating Text: So at this point, I want to keep adding to our pumpkin card here because we're going to create a Halloween gift that you can pass around to your friends. So the next thing that we want to do is we want to add some Texas is happy Halloween here, and we're going to animate that text, and I'm going to show you how to do that now. But I got a full class that goes more into depth on that, and that's called good vibrations. Add animation to your video titles and that's a new class. So go check that out, and it should show you in more in depth of how we're gonna do this next effect. So what I need to do is I need to add a new layer. So let's go modify layers at M D layer and then I'm gonna hit file important images and I'm gonna pick this J pig. I'm gonna provide this to you so you can use it without having to create your own type so we can position this around this stage. It's positioned pretty good, so I'm just going to click in the gray here, okay? And that's on layer four here. So I'm just gonna call this type player is going to hide the pumpkins for now. I don't need those right now. We're going to really, fairly quickly animate this text. So let's add two frames to this to get it to three frames total. And the next thing I want to do is want to make a new layer at empty layer. And I want three separate frames here, so let's do add after and add after. So we've got three separate frames here and this Somebody called this, um, happy Halloween. So let's grab our first frame here. I'm gonna go in and zoom in a little bit on our timeline and what we want to do. Let's go and drop the opacity down a little bit and then let's grab, Let's pick yellow. So I'm going to fast forward this eso You don't have to watch me tracing all three frames and again, if you need to watch my other class on how to do this, you can Otherwise I'm gonna explain it all the way through here. Okay, so we've got our three drawings traced. Its going zoom out a little bit I don't need the type player on anymore. So let's hide that Pass it e. And what I want to do is I want to make happy Halloween animate or vibrate all the way through the loop. So I'm gonna add a frame, teach drawing here, and then I'm going to add after and on to make a cycle. And let's go ahead and make that cycle go all the way to the end. And then to make this faster, I could just type in. Oh, I don't know. 70. Yeah, it's pretty close and add a few more there. Now you can see this doesn't, um, end right on a perfect cycle. So but that's not really gonna matter for the vibrating text. So this type player, we don't need it anymore. So I can come up here and I can delete that layer. So it's going to bring our pumpkins back up 9. Adding a Background: so we want to add some background. So the first thing I want to do is I just want to draw a line in black like that, and that's going to give us a little bit of ground. And then let's go paint tool, and you can pick any color you want. I'm gonna pick like a dark blue, and we're gonna fill in the background there and then maybe pick another color, maybe like a dark green, and we will fill that in. Okay, so we've given ourselves a little bit of background, and we should have some animation to look at here. So let's go ahead and go to the beginning and play this and see what we've got. And that looks pretty good. And you'll notice I've got one pumpkin jumping in front of the text at one jumping behind, and you can just use your layer arrows here to move things back and forth. So if we want So we've got pumpkin left on top of happy Halloween and pumpkin right below it. So we want both pumpkins to be in front of Happy Halloween. I would just move this layer up, and now they're both on top, and if I play that they should both jump in front what they do. But I kind of like one in the front one in the back. So let's to go like that, and at this point, we're pretty much done. You can put your name in here and animate your name or change the fonts or add a better looking background. There's a whole bunch of stuff that you can do to this, but for this class, our main objective is we want an animated looping GIF, so let's go ahead and do that now. 10. GIF File Size Options: Let's go and save our work really quick, and then we're gonna go file export as gift, save it or desktop. I'm gonna call this happy Halloween, and the resolution depends on what size you want to see that let's go ahead and do 50% and it's gonna make it smaller than what we built, and we'll save that out. And it's also going to make the file size a little bit smaller. So when that's done, let's hide Rough animator and let's go see, Here's our gift, So I preview that we can see looks pretty good now if I open with preview, it's going to show us all of the frames that were exported, and it looks like there's 56 total. So these air just individual drawings. And if we want to weaken, drop that on top of a Web browser and see what it looks like in a Web browser. So that's the size you would see it in a Web browser. Um, say you want a little tiny one. Let's go ahead and do export that really fast. So rough animator. We're going export gif again and let's switch to 25% resolution and I'm just going to call this 25 and let's hide rough animator. So 25. Let's do let's check the, um, do we get info on Let's check the files site. So that's 577 K and our other one, which was half size waas, 1.3 megs. So you can see that the size that you output these at affects the file size. So if you need to keep your gift under certain file size, that's something to pay attention to. Let's take a quick look at the file size if we export our gift at 100% resolution. So let's just call this 100 real fast. Here it is and see Yeah, that's 2.8 makes. So, depending on the size that you need, you may want to adjust that, and that's it. Don't forget to save your work within Rough animator and have fun sending your new Halloween animated GIF to your friends. See in a minute for the recap 11. Recap: congratulations on completing this skill share class, but we're not done quite yet. Let's take a look at what we just learned today. We learned how to use the drawing tools in Rough Animator. We also got our hands dirty with the squash and stretch animation principle. We went over to different ways of looping are bouncing pumpkin. Then we played around with the timing of our bounce. Remember, timing isn't a perfect science. This is the stage where you can give your animation some personal style. We looked at the duplicating layers feature when we cloned are pumpkin. We also use the make a cycle feature toe alternate are jumping pumpkins. And don't forget, we also added some vibrating text to say Happy Halloween. We finished the animation off by adding in the background and finally we went over how to export as a gift and the different file sizes we can get by exporting with the various resolution percentages.
