About This Class
In this class, you'll learn how to design and produce a pocket notebook series by hand. By the end, you'll have a group of 6–12 notebooks for personal use or to gift to friends throughout the year! We'll explore numerous ideas for designing your custom cover series using analogue graphics and typography. Then we'll go through the basics of making a saddle-stitched book—sewn or stapled. Along the way, you'll get tips on sizing, trimming and paper selection. Lastly, we'll discuss finishing touches and ideas for packaging them for gifting.

Instructor seems super friendly and low-key about the notebooks, which makes it easy to embrace the imperfections of your own first-time results. I actually took this class with my kids (6 and 4) and they loved trying the different cover effects and bindings she recommends. We are now set on sketch books for a while.
Hello Skillshare! I am a creative director and designer living and working in Houston, Texas. In 2004 I graduated from University of Houston with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Communications. After holding a senior designer position at Deuce Creative for nine years, my husband and I started A Civil Fox in the summer of 2013. We design brand identities, visual communications and tools for creative businesses and entrepreneurs.
Over the past four years, I have served on the board of directors for AIGA Houston in the roles of Membership Director and Associate Director of Emerging Membership. And some of my work has been featured in Print Magazine, HOW Magazine and For Print Only (FPO). Check out our blog, Forages, to see more of what inspires me in life and work and our side project, Print Prologue—a series of small-run, limited-edition notebooks and web guide for designing for small format print.
