Project Description

Gaining Rapport With Body Language

This is an exercise for you to try next time you need to build a super quick rapport.  It can be used in a sales environment, in negotiations or even in the dating game.

As humans we have a natural kin with people who will perceive to be similar to ourselves.  That’s how rapport works.  We have to to observe how the other person is behaving, and “mirror” them, in order to get them on side.  It’s this, that enables rapport, and in turn, helps us to influence an outcome in our favour!

  1. Match the person’s speech. Try and gauge the pace of their speech and follow suit.  This will immediately make them feel comfortable with you.

  1. Match their breathing rate. This may seem like a strange thing to observe, but you’ll really notice a shift in gaining a quick rapport if you’re able to mirror their rate of breathing.

  1. Notice how they deal with information. Some people like to sweat the small stuff and go over every minute detail, whilst others like to get a handle on the bigger picture earlier on in a conversation.  You’ll be able to make a decision as to what kind of person they are by letting them speak first.  If you comb through the specifics of everything, you could bore the other person, especially if they are the kind that get’s straight to the point!

If you get this wrong, it will be a challenge to get them back on side, so it’s worth investing in some time and patience in ascertaining what type pf personality they are.

  1. Use their style of words. Mirroring the words and phrases that the other person uses is very effective indeed.  Listen out for any common threads in any how they speak.  An example could be a person who frequently uses the word, “OK” or “You know what I mean”.  Without it being obvious, match a few key words they use.

  1. Copying a person’s mannerisms is a great way to build rapport if done subtly. Pay attention to their hand gestures or their facial expressions.
