Project Description

Review your Assertive Behaviour

Assignment

This project gets you to review your attitude to yourself and how you behave assertively.  It doesn't require any specialist knowledge or training, just a bit of honesty and some bravery!

Deliverables

  • An understanding about your views on yourself and your assertiveness 

  • A review of how you are currently using your assertion skills

  • A plan to positively change your assertiveness

The Rules of Assertion

  1. Respect yourself
  2. Recognise your needs as an individual (rather than your role)
  3. Make clear ‘I’ statements about feelings and thought
  4. Allow yourself to make mistakes
  5. Ask for what you want
  6. Change your mind – if you choose to
  7. Ask for thinking time
  8. Enjoy your success
  9. Recognise that you are not responsible for the behaviour of other adults
  10. Respect other people

Review the rules of assertion and decide how useful these rules are to you.

How do you work with these rules currently?

Decide in what areas of your work can you change your level of assertion and how can you do this.

(Remember - changing your assertion is not easy.  People will react to changes in your behaviour and, often, this is not in positive, supportive ways.)
