About This Class

In this video I will share with you the materials I use for traditional brush and ink painting. These painting are commonly known as Chinese ink painting, Japanese sumi-e painting or Korean painting. Origin from East Asia, it is distinct and unique in style and materials. The materials used are Raw Rice Paper, Ink Stick & Stone, Brush (Chinese, Japanese, Korean etc) and Colors pigments. You will learn how to hold the traditional brush. I will show you how to mix and apply ink on the rice paper.

After you got the materials, you will be excited to try out immediate. I will suggest you to look at the video on the five principles shades of ink. By going through the lesson, you will get to know how to create see shade. I will show you how we can use the shades in my other video.

At the end of this class, you can create the five principal shades and post it on the students' project page. I look forward to see your project.

In the next class, I will show you how to combine the shade to create a beautiful traditional painting.

Very good introduction to the tools of traditional brush painting.
This is a wonderful overview of something that's a long-time interest of mine and currently trending. Chee articulates the finer points without going into so much detail it seems impossible, but definitively keeps my attention. I love that in this class he (like all my favorite teachers), doesn't say you need "the finest materials ever," but rather instructs one to simply buy the best quality they can afford. That makes the desire to try something new (especially a form of art!) so open, so accessible- and I'm sure he encourages it in this way because once you try it, it's both relaxing and fun! There's little doubt you'll upgrade the supplies quickly, as I did, because Chee makes this traditional art accessible for absolutely everyone. I highly recommend this class.
