About This Class

This is a short course all about 3D printing of the type used in the home and for small business.

You may have heard about 3D printing but don't really understand what it is or how it works. Maybe you would like to get a printer but really don't know which type to buy. Perhaps you just want to know more about them and the types of items that can be printed.

3D printers are becoming more and more popular. Not long ago 3D printing was an expensive process used only by manufacturing and engineering industries for rapid prototyping. Now, however the machines have become no more expensive than a good colour 2D laser printer and not much larger in size.

There are also thousands of 3D models being produced by designers worldwide and being made available online for free for you to download and print in your own home.

Whether it's a new part for an appliance, a nice look vase, model scenery for model making or furniture for a dolls house. All these things can be downloaded and printed without the need to wait for plastics to be shipped around the world.

I have over 23 years experience as a Draughtsman & CAD Designer in a wide variety of disciplines. I started on a drawing board learning traditional drafting skills and witnessed the introduction of CAD softwarinto the industry. Originally starting on the very basic AutoCAD release 10 I have used every version of AutoCAD since as well as adding various other CAD software. This has given me a unique insight into how best to utilise these great tools in the real world environment.

1. 01 Introduction: Hi, and welcome to this course all about 3D printing. Service cost is going to be an introduction to 3D printing. And its a type of 3D printed me can do at home or in a small office with a small business. Various other types of 3D printing out there. The more industrial and drama, much larger and more expensive scale. But this course is going to look at these types of printers. Heavy, easily affordable for someone to have a home in the range of two to $500 and has this kind of printing that is becoming more and more popular. So this course is aimed at people who have no experience in 3D printing. Maybe you've heard about 3D printing, but you're not quite sure what it's all about. You just want an introduction and some things, how we decide which prints you might want to buy, which really depends on what you want to do with it. So over the next few chapters, we are going to look at the main differences between these two different types of printer and why you would choose one over another. 2. 02 What is 3D printing: So throughout this course I'm going to be using these two printers here as examples. Really. I'm not connected with Eva component and I'm not trying to sell EVA printer, visa, just well-known examples and popular examples of main two types. If you've got different printer or you think a different participants of UPS, Fair enough. These are just going to be used as examples. Okay? So we're going to look at the differences first and why you might want to choose one type of printer over and over. But first, let's have a look at 3D printed in general, what you can do with it, and why you might want to use it. So traditionally, in any kind of engineering, the way you used to work is we would do a design. We'd come up with a prototype. You might, you'd have 3D modelling. So you can see on screen you could do a quite good model on screen in your software. You could put materials on, you could make it look good, all that kind of thing, but it still wasn't a physical thing. He couldn't hold it in your hand, fits together with something else and now interacts and how it looks. So in the olden days, you would send that file away and you'd have it manufactured as a prototype, and you'd have to wait for that to come back. It would be expensive if it wasn't the changes VAB Madonna manually go through the whole process again and it takes time as expense. 3d printing came along. And it made up for easier, but he still had to be sent away freely. Princes were hugely expensive machines. It was only a few companies that would have. And it tended to be not only a very slow process, but there was very fragile or make anybody you'd wait for, it would be returned and chances are you break it. But it was clear that things were developing. And then over the next few years, which industrial machines started come down in price mama completes, we'll get them. You started having this kind of fulfillment machine printer. And they became stronger and just more useful as prototypes. But it was still expensive machines were, I'm a technology was evolving so fast. You didn't really want to buy the machine because in usb out of date, pretty soon. But then over the last few years, machines really have come down in price. And a point now where is affordable to buy our own machine? Maybe between two hundred and five hundred dollars. You can get a machine in your home capable of printing some good quality prints, a mass. Basically what these two are, 0s are prime examples of the two main types. So now you can sit in your small office are home and you can design something on your 3D CAD software and press print just like you would if you were printed out a drawing of it, you can print it on your 3D printer. And yes, they'll still take a much of vows to print, but you'll have it there in your hands. You can see how it works. You can make slight tweaks and then prints it again and again. And you could, most people like near use 3D printers will end up with a bin full of failed items. You've refined and refined and refined and thrown them away because it's disposable, very cheap to do. And it's within a matter of hours. So you can tweak and you can design as ego and these things can make designs better. It's not just for engineering practical objects. You see heavy, he's kinda rockets is display objects. There is a 3D printed on these machines. And, um, they look good enough. Isn't people seem to like things like sum as a lot of people have embraced the 3D printing technology and rather than using it just for engineering back creating display objects or foreign objects, figures for war gaming for example, models for model railways kind of thing, and display items. It's not just functional engineering objects anymore. The future is bright for 3D printing is going to be a massive, massive thing in the future. If you think about all this plastic that it's been bought, whether it's a new part for an appliance, a new handle for a draw, maybe an internal parts of a car. All these plastic parts are being shipped all around the world and maybe manufacturing China's and around the world it's all pollution is all bad for the environment. It's not going to be too long until you can buy maybe a plastic. Vars are apart, a new note for your cooker or something like that. You can download it, print it. And Israel, there's been no shipping, has been no mass production and all the chemicals and pollution gives out. You've just downloaded for object and printed it. And not just plastics either. The materials for printing. Advancing every day, metal printing is now a reality, although it's not affordable yet. Just like this wasn't a few years ago. It's not gonna be long until we're all print in metal objects. And then by, opens up a whole new world. So if you think about something like very car industry, there's many, many classic cars now. The people enjoy driving. People might enjoy maintaining them, but it's not worth a company's wild to keep these parts produced and keep these cows on my robe because they're really driven by some enthusiasts. So what tends to happen is everyone's looking for this old stock shelves in warehouses and they're becoming more and more scarce certain parts I haven't to be remanufactured by new companies. Well in the future, all a company will need to do is stop the design of every part on a file. And then if someone needs to buy apart, they can send them the file and that person can print them. Even while it remains an industrial endeavor. You don't need a company to have a warehouse full of spares, just a computer with a files under a decent methyl printer. So even though the printing technology might be expensive, it's still cheaper than having huge warehouses full of paths, just waiting for someone to name them. And helps the environment in things like logistics and transportation and all the pollution that goes with it. So the future is, is big. 3d printed is going to be big. Was a 3D prints on the International Space Station, which is a prime example. You don't need to take all these parts that they just need to be able to produce from other. And we're going to see that more and more. So this course is going to show you how you can get involved. Maybe want to buy a 3D printer. You don't show which one to get. Maybe you've bought one on your computer and you don't know where to start, maybe have been printed awhile and you just want to do a bit of a recap. This course is going to go over and is the fixed cost will show you that and you enjoy it. 3. 03 The main 2 types of 3D printer: So there's quite a few different types of 3D printing. And there's all kind of environment for this top spot. Really. There's two main ones. Other moment in terms of what you may expect to buy for your home or small office. And that is FDM, which stands for Fused Deposition Modeling. And what could deal PE, which is digital light processing. An SLA might hereof as well, which is same sort of thing is delle paste is different type of light with UV and things. So you've got FDM and we'll say SLA, okay, for the purpose of this course. But rather than use acronyms which you just gonna get confused, which is which for our cause, it's easy to just describe them as what they are. Service is a resin printer and this is a filament printer, okay, amongst the two main types of technology are likely to encounter in a home or small office time printer. So that's how we're going to call a Picasso but filament printer and a resin printer. But what's the difference? Let's have a look. 4. 04 The 3D Printing Process: So before we get into the main differences between the two types of printing, let's look at how 3D printing works in general. So in 2D printing, your normal printer, you will centre for an image or a document. It's just printing 2D image onto a piece of paper like basic principles, it prints the word. And that's what you got and that's what we all used day in, day out. Freely printing. Really the best way to think about it is exactly the same, but with an extra dimension. So as well as printing the flat image, it's printing the heights as well. And you end up with something like this. This was done on a filament printer and so that's how it would have been created. The first thing it would have printed, but when it first started would be flat shape there, which would have been so flight would have looked like a 2D image and it would have printed on his bed. And then as it goes, Apps layer after layer after layer until it ends up on this bed printing something like that. And this machine will work the same way. It layer by layer by layer. It just does it in a different way as we'll see later. But that's one of the main things you need to understand about 3D printing. Whatever method you use really is printing layer by layer. And so when you create an object on the, on your freely cuts software, you need to be able to split that object up into lots and lots and lots of layers, hundreds of thousands of lives. So you need another piece of software which we'll look at lights are called slicing software, which does, as it sounds really, it takes your object and it slices it into all these layers, ok? And then each of those little slices will be sent to some software which basically shows each slice and a misprint cell of this principle, create slice, slice on top. And we have a slice on top to build up your final object. And because of the details and things on the object, each slice might look slightly different. So it gradually built up into your 3D object. Amass basic process behind 3D printed and slicing. 5. 05 Where to Get Models: Okay, so what do you do if you're a designer, you don't know CAD 3D cover up kind of thing. That you wanted to get it pretty prints and you want to get involved. Well, you really don't need to be able to freely mobile yourself or use any kind of cut. Those websites outlet, I'm Missy is probably the most popular, is called Thingiverse. Thingiverse.com. And it just contains muddles of people have made and uploaded. I'm a free in doing this is a great thing about it. Some of them a bag qualitative and others. So you do need to remember that it's free and you kind of needs a shelf above it. It says a qualitative. But most things you could think of, if you were looking for something may be for your daughter's dolls house. And you can save as all sorts of things here. This furniture as multiple pages of things. Fiddles, house, maybe off, maybe like mobile railways, Vega houses, trains, all that kind of thing. Maybe like figures. We need to put in which particular figure, the line, as well as in government there. All sorts of things. Pages and pages of free items. And if you, if you live in sort of A's, you click on it, you download the file and put it in your slicer. Put out with the All Settings button on my cat, just like we did in viral model. And then print y i. So all this is available. If afraid, I'm, I'm, this is the power of 3D printing and why I think it's going to be so big in the future because it's not just fall novelty items like a slit civil occurred. Hose connects. So let say you out something on your nose, pop your hose, you needed to water the garden hose pipe wrote the shop was shot well, you can go in and you can download something. Okay. You can download adapters. But to adopt as something to mount your phone on the storage for your memory cards. There's n nozzles via vacuum cleaner, maybe a misplaced as you've just printing them. Once you've got a 3D printer in their home, sometimes it's easy to forget you even got it. But when you get into that right mindset, if something breaks or you need some, a lot of the times, it's just a case of Gautam here. Download the new one, imprints in it. And it's just such a useful tool to have. If you have a kind of person who ends up buying lots of things, maybe feed desk, put your phone on. Maybe a new car phone holders, that kind of thing. Just little accessors. If you buy a loss to fly out and gadgets, the machine may even end up paying for itself because he just download a list of fringes post-print. So there you go. So you don't need is pretty, pretty x_hat. And just for people who know CAD, you don't need to be a designer. I really think in a few years time you will see the sittin in a lot in way more houses and homes just because people are buying things on the likes of Amazon and eBay. I mean, it's communists and instant download which I print it out on their own machine rather than wait for delivery. Certainly things like viruses for the home. You know. You might go out and pay good money for arrays. You can just print them. And there's tons and tons of designers, pages and pages of different designs for volunteerism, pen holders and that kind of thing. So if you like this kind of stuff, him at home, it's just a case of choosing the right COO of filament and choosing a good design. And you can print as many of you will. Now was also a good business here in 3D printed. There's a lot of people out there making good money with I freed a printer's. Do you know someone who pay for some fin like this, maybe a friends or maybe you have a shop and you could put some on the shelves or maybe could sell thing, you could sell them online or new stall. Don't forget, you could 3D print your logo and say if you could do that and kept. So I'll just stick it on, something fun and just print out stickers with the logo and put it on. So things like coasters would you stick because on all sorts of things you can print. So there's money to be made with 3D prints, some flat fingers. You do need to make sure all the designer has given you permission, commercial permission to sell them. Okay, there's a lot of people out there selling things I shouldn't be selling. If you design it yourself, you find, as long as it's not anything like Style walls, all that kind of thing. Because then does Neo-Confucian copyright? If you printed your own design buzzes and things Exelon all day long, someone else's, you might ask the designer, can I have permission to sell A's if he gives you preparation? Yeah. So there's a lot of people doing that. Car accessories, phone holders fend people making money with money. So in products, okay. One of the best ways to make money is fatal Hobby. If you've got a niche hobby and you can create accessories for that and you can set up a website as people making a ton of money selling random accessories which designing, and you can't really find a mashups for niche. Hobbes is a growing market. So you have a 3D printer is such a useful item. And if you don't, you don't have one yet. I recommend looking on fingers and just having a look, even if it's right, even if you're a designer, just to get ideas of things you might want to design yourself. Have a look on here, see what you can get and how useful a printer convey. 6. 06 Slicing: Okay, so let's look at the process of getting some fit of a 3D printer. Again, this is an overview course, is not a course on any particular piece of software. So I'm not gonna go too much in depth about any kind of settings in this software. But this is generally how it would work. So let's just say you've created a 3D model of this rabbit. Ok, I don't know why you do that. Maybe it's anonymous or something, but you've got a rabbit and that's afraid a design, this could be a machine part, could be anything, but it's a 3D model. Okay? So in order for the printer to print bows slices, we talked about where it print slice by slice. You need some software lightly. So this is called care services, a popular one, but as a result, and it will create a corpus into those slices for in a decay. So there's lots and lots of settings you can change. But let's just, let's just click on the Slice button and simulators. So there it goes. It's domains saying misprint is going to take, and this is on a filament printer, this is going to take six hours, 20 minutes. Secrecy is not a quick process, but maybe you're going to leave it overnight. Maybe you're going to leave it going while you while you do something else so you don't sit by and watch it. So it otherwise it doesn't really matter about the hours, but but it's how long it's going to type. Okay? And we can click on this preview. We can see kind of what it, what it is going to do. So what you have a AMI slightly of this 5.2.5 butts but number of slices that it's gonna do. So split this into 525 small slices. And if we scroll down, if you look at the top of v is here, you will see it going down slice by slice. So it will start out, it will just do those fall kind of fate pubs. And it will, as it goes, it's going to build up those. It's going to start him a body. And it's going to build up this Robert. And you can see in the middle, it set to do is a solid. So it does, it doesn't actually fill it with plastic because that would be both be a wasted material and it would take forever. So it does kind of a crisscross infill and this is all changeable. You can set how close vis crisscrossing is and how and how solid batch lights and will obey. You could even have it as an open shell if you want it, but that would probably create issues when it gets to the top part of it. But you can you've got all that you can change. Everything is so many. There's all these settings, which is way too much to going on a beginnings cost. It would take a course for the software and the settings to describe all those. So this is just an overview of how it's done and you can see the outside. It's set to do the shell with the outside scheme, if you like, is known as the shell. And settlement is gonna do that in free run server Britain had each of these lines is, one is the print head kind of squirted out some melted filament and it will go round and it will do free lines to credit Michelle. I'm and it will do all its infill stuff. And it'll, it'll carry on going like this. Here. It will start doing in your head now. Depending on your printer, if you imagine. When we get down here, it starts off during the first layer on the print bed. So it can print anything because it's flat on the print bed. The next layer is on top of outliers. So as it goes up, it's building on top of a previous layer. Ok? And when it gets to doing things or as it's going up at an angle on the fire edge, it has to protrude out what's as it goes layer by layer on layer to give you this angle. And depending how sharp it can get a angle depends on how good your printer. This is known as overhang. Once we get to here, it gets steeper and it'll get more difficult to do without it just kind of drop it off. Here. It's almost flat is very difficult and so you might need to put supports in AML level. But the general process, so it will print layer by layer by layer by layer. So you get to a final item. Okay? Now, when we look at supports, i'm just going to change in here because it's setting support generates a pole. Okay. Let's just see what it is and I'm going to slice it. Okay? So now you can see what it has done, whereas before it was only printing the rabbit. Now it's added this big solid object here and even here and underneath. And what that is is kind of a very light buildup from the bed. So when it gets to print them is overhanging section. He's got something. It can print the lighter on. Ok. It's got something it can fix her. If you look at the it's hard to see with. So if you look at the connection between the finished rabbit and the support, there is a gap and just kind of a purpose it does it so it's easy to break off and that's what you do is parts of v. After processing this model, you'd have to, it would probably break off and you're set to print it. So lie. And again, as all settable, unchangeable if it's not working the way you want. But generally they suppose I just break off in your hand and you end up with a finished model. Maybe you need to do some Sunday awesome filing or some finches to get rid of a max, but it's better than the rabbits have dropping off after four hours. So yeah, it depends on what you're printing where V need support. And if you designing, you can design and split your object and put away, but makes it better to print but us. But it's an overview of the slicing process. I'm this slicing process. It works pretty much the same way we've resin printing and filament printed. The supports might be done in more of a framework we've raise imprinting, but as an overview by is how slicing software, slices of modals and print swim with support. 7. 07 FDM Printing Overview: So the main differences. First, we'll look at filament printed. And this is a filament printer here. So it's a fairly simple machine. It works a bit like a CNC machine, if you know about is all the old kind of dot matrix printers where I'll have a print advert slides like a CNC machine. It will, it will move in free axes, so the print head will slide that way. The bed will slide that way on this one. And it will also go up and down and that, so it gets your different axes for your print. Ok. So the way this works, you by the filament, it comes on a big role like this. And it is just plastic type of wire. No, it's just solid plastic is quite flexible. And you get this in all different colors and different types. You can get any code you can think of rarely. But also you can get things like silver and gold metallic you can get would affect muscle and fat than new filament. Filament technology is advancing probably faster than the actual machine technology. So there's all sorts of different types of Froman and different materials that can do different things. So we'll talk about later. But that's the basic filament where you take out the end of the filament and you run it through these various tubes into this prints ahead here. A misprint ahead is known as the hot-hand. So this heats up and it melts with plastic. And then all it does is it draws the layer with the melted plastic and then moves up slightly. Josie overlay with melted plastic moves up till eventually is drawn with whole thing layer by layer with melted plastic. And it has a funny enhanced so soon as the plastics put down, kind of set hard and you end up with a nice hard pace up. Depending on your filament, you can get filament which actually prints flexible material. You can get different, different properties like heat proof from that kind of thing is all really down to your filament, not the machine. So, yeah, basically how a filament printer will work. There's different types from different manufacturers in terms of how the things move on, Miss wellness but moves, but it might be this actual print had moved in steady direction. Some of them, whereas this is kinda of X and Y. Some of them do it in a circular fashion. There's all different types of equity all uses the same process for the filament printing, which is melting is filament and drawing slice by slice with a melted filament to build up those layers. Ok. So that's filament printing. 8. 08 FDM Printing Example: Okay, so we've sliced about mobile up now. But how do we get it into this machine? You can just link a casualty from your computer to the machine. It's not recommended. Whereas with normal kind of 2D paper printer, your computer will send the image to the printer. It will print out page. With 3D printed tends to send it slice by slice. So because prints can take hours and hours. If your printer became detached, its own walked past a table or something like that, it's gonna stop printing. So we don't tend to use cables as such. You can use something called doctor a Raspberry Pi. And that'll let you send it for WiFi info network things. Again, that's kind of a cause of its own. It gets quite complicated. By far, the simplest thing to do is just save it onto these little memory counts here. And that's how this machine is. Sets were. Then put the memory card into the slot. This machine is just slipped him a file and sluts imprint. Now the machine to start to do some phase, starts to wire up and make noise and things over filament and prints a house a heats up first, if you remember, is actually melting is pasta, Kim is hot and so here is a metal nozzle and it's actually heat to note. Now you can see it is telling us how the degrees of a nozzle, but also this print bed, if you much in the nozzle is going to print plastic comes with quite well as well. Nozzle moves. It kinda wants to move the object with it. You need something to stick it down. So this bed heats up as well and it doesn't heat up anywhere near as has been nozzle generally around 50 to 60 degrees. But it's enough just to slightly melt the objects and the filament onto the bed and just leave it Stockholm abet. So by now it's been nozzle prints. It doesn't just drug it about. Now. You can get different surfaces of beds. Some are more effective than others. Some machines about doughnut, but others. Sometimes you will need to spray some a daisy onto the spread am as various different ways. It is quite a contentious subjects because heated arguments online about what keys or best way personally, I think it depends on what your printing, whether you need it, is best to use. But as an overview, this bed will heat up and stay object. So just to know if it's not sticking to it. Spread of some kind of a daisy. Usually we're somewhere, you can clean it off if you wish. But for now, we're just gonna leave it as it is. It can fail, it is warm, it's current. Terminals were bad is at 50 degrees. And now the nozzle is warm, it is, nozzle is warming up to 200 degrees a 100 degrees of a moment. Silva machine doesn't take long to get going and it's nozzle gets to 200 degrees. You're gonna see things start to move and you're going to see it start to print and it will start with those four rabbits feet. But we saw a slicer, but will be the first thing and it will build it up. Obviously, we're not going to say if a 6.5 hours and watch it, but I'll just show you the machine get going so you can see just how it moves and how it generally works. Okay. We're a hundred and fifty a hundred and sixty degrees now, so it's warming up quickly. So it's a 195 is pretty much at 200 degrees now. So you're going to see it start to do some thing. You'll see this nozzle move in to the starting position on the bed and what it will do, it will, it will create a line of melted plastic that's kind of a purge just to get it going when it heats. So you can get strands of this kind of melted filament here. So it does, this machine does like a line to just purge that nozzle out so it can start with a clean print. And you'll see that happening now. It's moving down to this bottom corner here. And you'll see what I mean by this is called a free axes machine. This novel moves in three axes. It moves that way, opened down and I'll miss machine, but nozzle doesn't actually move this way. The bed moves instead is printed in free axes. Okay. So there we go. So now it's going to just stop purging my nozzle purge line. Now it's moved into a sentence going to stop printing the actual model here. I'm not. We're not going to workshop. 9. 09 FDM Filament: Okay, so in terms of filament, when we mentioned, you can get different colors, different types. It's really an easy way to get into 3D printing to find out what it's all about, mess about with it without getting mixed up in my residence and the chemicals that are involved in resin printing. Very good. Entry level printer here, around $250. And you can be printing all sorts of things. You don't have to design them yourself. Will look up and end of a chapter. There's places you can just download them for free. So don't feel you need to be a designer to take about 3D printing is a great thing to have in the house. And a filament prints is especially fun with children. Principle thorough toys, furniture for your daughter's dolls house, all that kind of thing. We'll look at what's available online. They don't have a rabbit, so I'm gonna cancel this. 10. 10 Resin Printing Overview: Now resin printing for machine, it looks a lot simpler. There's less moving parts. But how does it work? So if we take office, this is just kind of a light proof casing because it's very dependent on light. With machine works with light basically. Here we have the bad. Now this does the same as this printer bad hair rail. And it prints objects upside-down. So whereas this machine, you would print your object and it would finish up layer by layer with this one. It would finish like that. Okay. Still, I'm about Still oriented in the same way. It's just it prints it upside down. Now the way this works, I remove surface. This is known as the resin bath. So you get a special type of resin and you pour it in here and it's a liquid. It's quite nasty stuff. So you've got two where L EPP goggles, gloves, that kind of thing. But you put your resonance. And then this machine will drop is bed down into the resin. It will lift up a very small amount, but for high of one slice of your object, it will lift off the bed. And then this here is a mis machines, an LCD screen. It will shine like UV light. Showing the image much like this would draw the slice. This will shine a light in shape and the resin actually sets we've lived. This resonance sets would be UV light. So if Shawn a UV image, image shape it wanted to print, it would set had on the bad. When it lifts up again, the heights of one slice again. And it projects and over image which sets up and it goes and it lifts and it was an atlas. And that's basically how it works. And eventually you would end up with something like that, which would be all the slices that have been set with the UV light each time. So the last one would be okay. And when it's done now with resin printIn with some post-processed that you need doing. With this, you can just pull it off a better news it because there's resonance, such nasty stuff. You need to wash it and then it's still going to be quite soft solvent. You would have a liver process cured under Nova UV light, which we'll look at later when we go more in-depth on this machine. But the main difference, you have a filament which is just melting plastic and drawing layer by layer. And you have resin which is setting up a liquid if you lie. And next, we'll look at why you would choose one over the other. 11. 11 Resin Printing Process: Okay, so let's have a look at the resin printing process now. Unfortunately because of the way it works and so light sensitive, it's gonna be very hard for me to show you in progress like we did on May filament machines are I'll talk you through it will remove this usually about what nafta stem, which is why it's so hard for me to show you. The cleanup process involves two main phases. First, you need to wash up print. Always process. You need to be wearing gloves and safety glasses. You really do not want to get this in your, i believe me if it goes on your skin, It's not going to burn or anything. But some people are more sensitive lovers, but you can develop a sensitivity to it, an allergic reaction, unlike say all depends on your sensitivity but just don't do it even if, even if you don't get any reaction, it can cause a reaction later. It can cause you to become more sensitive to it. You don't want. So always, always, always with this machine, gloves and safety glasses and also the fumes the resin gives off. Some people like to wear a mask. It all depends on your environment rarely, but yeah, look after yourself with these machines. 12. 12 Resin Printing Post Processing: So this will be on the bad men. You need to wash it. Now, the best thing to wash it n and I'm talking about is a standard resume you get is what we call IPA. And to those of you into bear, that's not pale ale or anything to do with bare, its isopropyl alcohol. And you want the strongest or fee like 99% of where I am, you can't get a 100% because you don't want them to drink. It's allowed some things to make it. Is it, which means it's 99% awesome flow. So you've got kind of processes going a bit too specific viscosity it you take your item and you'd watch me IPA. And the way I used to give as many people do it is to put your IPI into this concern or fitness is actually a pickle tray. But it comes with this neat little. You have this API and it's constantly stored in marriage is put on the shelf with the light DOM when you want to watch a part. So Coffel it apart in a fluid and you can use this basket. So give it a good Washington fluid flow take now. So I used to do it will look different when a minute, but any way you want to wash it, you just wash it an IPA. Really. Make sure you get all the fluid off. Make sure it's nice and clean and you'll end up with your part. But it won't be fully cured. It won't be hard because it's, this machine just cares enough to keep its form, but it doesn't make him hardware like unfinished items. So when you need it under UV light, now if it's a nice sunny day like today, you can just put it outside in the sun and LQ Australia away, maybe even on a window sill if you're maybe I'm attempt flaw, you don't want to walk downstairs. If it's nighttime or maybe it's winter and overcast day and it's not gonna do it for you and you may have to come up with a UV light yourself. So maybe you can by UV streetlights. Uv light comes on, you leave it in there for five minutes, ten minutes, and let it kill. Okay. That's how you sit or what I do now. And I highly recommend this to you if you're gonna do it to buy yourself vis a washing machine. Now you don't need to buy this exact one. Again, I don't want this company Bridges maximum lifestyle much easier. It looks like an of a printer. This one's made by these two omega, same company as of, as available. And what you would do, you will have your vat of IPA on here. Ok. So you've taken this off a printer, your model is Tacoma and it's covered him resin. Now all you do is same adapter on there. It put it on this machine and you lower it down. Was so pretty much stuck on the bottom of it but you lower it down into about liquid like that. Okay. And you put a lid on it precipice on Amazon found him a bottom of Hegel's stable liquid around and it will give you a really good washing me IPA and it does it one way. And then the other is semi amount of time. Usually, I do it for six minutes and it will wash your power fire. Okay. But you take it out again, still stuck to that point. You remove your fluid and you promise, which turns it into a kind of a turntable. Remove your part and you put it on your turntable. Pretty laid back on. And it's gotten over modes, so it's got wash mode and second mode. Now the second mode, all these IU, the lights, so this turntable will turn on, these lights will cure for your in a matter of minutes, couple of minutes, something like. So this machine does reflect washes, it kills, still, always use gloves in eye protection, but it's way, way, way less messy. I believed me this machine was better game changer. If, if you get one of these, I recommend you get one of those book tour. So far as a washing machine and I'll show a video Now that being used again, sorry, it's so hard for me to show based in progress like we didn't really ever, but just because it works on light is so hard to watch it being done. And I'm very pleased with it. 14. 14 Which Type of Printer Should You Choose 01: So which to choose? Well, it really depends on what you want to print. If you print it in fairly large objects, chunky objects, you probably want to go the filament printer, we've resin is limited on-site varies. Bigger princes were miss available, but the resin process tends to be geared more towards small kind of details. So you can actually add finer detail than you will with a filament machine. And it makes sense really if you think about this is melting plastic and its journey with the print head economically is capable of actual, surprisingly good detail. But there's only so far you can go with melting plastic. So because this uses light, is capable of much finer detail and some people much prefer this type of printing. You want to get into printing small figures for wargaming off, display lots of detail. People like to print the kind of statues and figures with salts and all the armor. And they have a kind of plate's on and chain mail and capes and all that kind of data which are pain or maybe small kind of wargaming objects, tanks with loads and loads of detail and things like that. And this is a printer you gonna walk. This is capable of going down to some really good data. The duty of tune-in NBA, all that support from whatever printer you manufacture you've got, where's all that support? You probably got its own Facebook group where you can get Allah info. So if you need small objects with lots of detail, resin printing is the way to go and it is generally worth putting it with a hassle of here in the chemicals to get that level of detail you want. Although that can be made easy with the end of a machine, which I'll show you later on when we look more in depth into resin printed. If you want to do larger objects such as these kind of rockets and things, then this is a type of printer you want a filament printer. You're going to be able to churn out bulkier items, larger items still get a decent amount of detail, lot less mass than the resin printer. And you can see, you can actually see it printing. You can see how things fit together a lot easier, okay, we've resin printing because it is affected by light. And that's why this is empty account show you the liquid amount because it would go off with the life. You have to have this protective cover OVR printer. So you can, when you put liquid in, it doesn't instantly go quickly go into SAT because that's what it's supposed to do. So you can't really see what's going on with this printer until it's finished. Whereas we're vase printers, you can watch it go, you can fix any mistakes, you can stop it midway and things like that. So this lends itself more to the larger items and larger models and probably Mall with the industrial side and prototyping. A miss tends to be more popular just because it's easier and less hustle. 15. 15 Which Type of Printer Should You Choose 02: Personally, I use both of them in something like this rocket for example. The main body is created on the filament machine. We have some small details here, which are called the normal resin machine. So for me I use both analyte using both and I can use each one to its abilities. But really is dependent on what you want to print, which when you buy or you might do what I do, you might buy both. 3d printing can be quite effective once you get into it. So, yeah, it's a good idea to get both and see which one does what you want best. Now, one thing you need to bear in mind with both types of 3D printing. It does take a long time to print mist of a piece like this, I think would have taken about four hours, maybe five hours. Because he's doing it layer by lemmas. Layers are very small. The more detail you want, the slower you want to print. So across all 3D printing, really, some people might say I speed my principal Punnett prints really fast. You can never, you can speed or we can say all those settings. But with fastest speed, you get less detail. So if you want a better finish and better detail, and slow it down. Now when I was looking to buy my first 3D printer, I was ready to spend the better money because they use it for work. But before us flushed out on an expensive machine, I decided to get a cheaper low end machine like this. Just so I could find out more about it, find out what it's about. I didn't have the benefit of a course like this. I wanted to know more about it. What became apparent when I bought this machine is that no matter how much you spend on a machine, it's still going to take a long time to print event decided rather than spend a lot of money on one machine, it would be far better for me. Multiple lower-cost machines and separate my model into paths. I can then print a lot quicker because I can print more paths going on different machines and mass. That's the way our folder and this machine has been great to do what I want to talk about, tuning the low-end machines with very smart ones, I would say you need to get from them. Not so much a resin ones because they tend to be too self-contained. But certainly these ones, you can get lots of add-ons, very, very cheap, available on all the places like Amazon and eBay. Very rough pounds or dollars. Tomb the main. You get them refined, few bits on and you can get printed some good stuff. So in terms of what you want to buy, really depends on your budget. And it depends on what you want to do. If you do want to do about small detailed objects than golfer resin, larger objects or you just want to get into prototyping kind of thing, go with filament. Even small objects do well on filament, but you don't get a really fine data that you might on tourism machine. And budget-wise that, well, that's not really some finite can say, but it's a good idea. I would probably suggest get a low end cheap machine, play with it, find out what it's all about before you push out. Because it might, you might wanna do what I did, which is to spread. But you over more lower-cost machines and have ease of separating printing quicker than just having an expensive machine. Subtler for hours. It might get a better finish off that one pays. You could have separated into many pieces and Adorno prints no-one's. Also based technologies is developing so fast. You might not want to splash out a lot of money on something that may be out of date any era to so something to think about when it comes to buying a printer. And now we'll look more in depth about each one. 16. 16 Conclusion: So that's a bit of a brief overview of 3D printed. Certainly kind of small scale 3D printing that is affordable from home offer small business. Again, as I said in the introduction, varies. Other types of 3D printing and there's a long list of things are either being done, were being done, or are coming down the line, but attempt to be for the industrial side, very expensive and not rarely. You don't need to know about them to be doing the kind of stuff that we like doing from home or for a small company. The main two things of a filament and resin printers. And I just wanted to show you the differences that gives you more of an idea about how they were and what you might want to look for, the type you might need depending on what you want to do. Again, in the models yourself, or get him a finger. It's totally up to you. A 3D printed isn't necessarily fun. You need to be a cut designer to use. You can just get it and start printing stuff you find on the internet is going to become more miserly, gonna become more and more useful is, you know, it's not going to be something that's out of date. It is technology's moving at such a fast pace. 17. 17 Learn to Create Your Own Models: So I say you don't need to be a cup designer. There might come a time where you need something and you wish you could design it. The microtome where you get really into 3D printing. You'd like to actually do it as a career.
