1. Ink Illustration Intro : I am with the selection. Welcome to my class on ink illustrations in this class. I'm going to go over the supplies you need for ink illustration. What I think is important about illustration is learning how to use the marks, whether it's simple or crosshatch to create value. So I start the class with showing the student how to create a grayscale using a marker. If you're new to drawing, I suggest taking a look at my other two drawing classes in my drawing with graphite class. I describe value, lightness and darkness, and I really go into depth in that class. So in anything I'm trying to illustrate, I want to bring it be passed, just an outline. So this isn't just about learning how to draw outlines. Contour drawing is one part of learning how to draw with markers or with ink. But the other part is really trying to understand how to create value with mark making. Thanks for joining me. I hope you enjoy the class 2. Ink Illustration Supplies and Techniques: I like to have students start by creating a gray scale, and I'm gonna show you one using the stippled technique and one using the crosshatch technique. You also can use other markings to create this great scale. For the first technique, I'm using a Sharpie Ultra fine point. This micro brand comes and even finer points. Um, but mine is a little bit damaged, so it wasn't doing a great job of doing perfect little God's. So I'm going to demonstrate with this one. In this technique of going from white of the paper, creating a light gray, you want to start with the dots being far apart. We're creating a grayscale here, gradually get them closer together. - So I'm trying to get as many variations in value as I can from white to black. So now I'm going to demonstrate the crosshatch technique. You want to start with your lips with your lines far apart, gradually making your lines closer together. So then is I want to start to make it darker. I'm going to go in a cross hatch pattern. Then I'll go in another direction. It's 1/3 layer. Once again, I'm trying to get a lot of variation in the values. So I'm gonna go a little bit farther and then just layer some more directions and some more lines. So there are just two techniques. The staple in the crosshatch. You also can use any type of mark. No, could be this to describe texture, trees, things like that. And just as you build up this mark, you can create a grayscale showing different values. You can also do that with a bigger marker. This is still a fine, fine point the Sharpie. Consider site the fine. This is the ultra fine. But when I have been using on this one's in better shape when I should have been using. All right, so this is a much thicker line, but you can do something. You can do the same techniques. So I'm starting with the lines spaced out, going a little bit closer together. When you're working with a bigger pen, your marks are probably gonna have to be a lot bigger. But I can do this crosshatch. This is just, um, black waterproof India ink. I want to show you how you can use this white marker, so I'm gonna so you can see the India ink it's you a little bit, um, blacker black. Then this marker will let the ink dry. Put a couple coats because it's not quite jet black. So this is an £80 drawing paper. So one problem with using ink is it left it a little bit Tripoli. Some inks are better than that that think that I just used. But let's see what this white marker does on the, uh on top of the Sharpie. So you get definitely could use some of these techniques, um, to go back into a black and create different patterns. It's like the reverse of this, so you would be building up the white to create highlights it. 3. Ink Illustration Drawing 1: So when I'm looking for something to work on, I'm looking at the lights and darks. Um, and there's a lot of good stuff going on here with all the greys that Aaron the for here. I really like this one, too. But I'm noticing that this white is the is the lightest part. So it would have to be I would have to create a background. Or I could do this ungrateful paper with the white marker or even on black paper with the white marker. But I created for another class great paper with a wash of pink. So I might think about doing this one on great paper and on the white paper. I think I could work on this one, so I usually cut a window. This is five by seven. Could a mat to fight by seven dimensions. It seems to be a manageable size to work, and I use it to crop my subject. You don't have to do this. This is just something I do when I'm teaching, and it just crops it down to a manageable, you know, area toe, learn these techniques. So the first thing I'm gonna do is trace that five by seven on to clean piece of paper. And then I would take this on here so it didn't move a little piece of paper back, and that allows me to sketch it to scale here. A little cheat I use for getting the, um, things sketched on here to scale is by just using a few measurements. So I just put this on the edge, and I measured where the ear is more than noses. And when I'm going to transfer that, I'm gonna look at how far down this is. Even though I'm not measuring it, transfer those measurements, then I might do something similar over here. Once again, I'm looking at how far you want this to be straight. But I'm looking at how far away? No, I'll just trance for transfer that. Then I might do a measurement down here. Just choose me where the body comes in. So instead of gritting the whole thing, I'm just transferring some measurements. So here, from the top, from the top here to where the body comes in and that gives me a little map. You know, I could measure where this is, but I'm just gonna kind of eyeball and looking at the negative shapes. - So I'm trying to look at the direction that the fur is going and maybe copy that with my marks . So here, I think, the first going this way. - Okay , good. - So right in here. I want to see how I can copy that. That pattern with the dark's sort of random might want to describe that was being slightly different from this. So just gonna use some directional lines. - Sometimes it's just knowing when to stop. So I'm just gonna, you know, take a little break. Look at it. See if there's some areas that need to be slightly darker. Um, so I would build up those areas, but, um, it's kind of interesting kind of getting the message across, so sometimes you just have to take a break. Um, and I would definitely want to erase all my pencil lines to see if it's holding together. So if I needed to, if I had gone to darkens in an area, I could use this weight to go back into it, but I sort of left some white. I went lightly, so I don't really need to use the white ink that much. But even here, I could, you know, throw some of these little whisker things this little. So this white pen lets you go back in if you needed to get, um, some white highlights back. 4. Ink Illustration Drawing 2 Gray Paper: So I'm gonna work on this one now I'm going to sketch it out on great paper. This is a paper that I created with watered down India ink. And I'm gonna use chalk to sketch it because I noticed the pencil when I tried to erase it . It a raced into the great paper, which actually might work, you know, in my drawing if I wanted to use that technique, But I'm just going to sketch using this chalk could use a white charcoal pencil, so I'm using this because it erases easily. I'm just lightning the chuck drawing with this kneaded eraser, using a black and white photo on my phone as a reference, I'm starting with the white ink and working on the highlights. I want to think about where it's really white and then leave the areas that would be gray as the gray of the paper. And then I can go in with some black ink and do the dark's here . It's just this part that's the brightest wait, using either a broken line or this like Curly Q Curly. - So now I need to look for the darks, and I'm going to start with black and kind of worked my way out. Um, that's because I'm not quite sure where the where the gray of the paper where I should leave it alone. I guess that's what I'm trying to say. So I'm just going to start doing some of the dark's that I know will be black here. I'm using a slightly different marking. Um, just sort of this jagged line instead of the Curly Q. We'll see how that works out. - I feel like there some areas that are just looking flat, so I'm going to try to decide whether they need more black or more weight. I end up looking at the places that I can bring out the highlights and decide to add more weight. Um, right here to try to create more dimension like this whole area here is very light. So I'm gonna ADM or white there. - So now I'm looking to develop these medium to dark grace, and I'm using the black marker but leaving space between my marks. Okay, 5. Ink Illustration Wrap Up : Hi there. Thanks for taking my class on ink illustration. I hope you enjoy the class. And I hope you gain some understanding about how to create value using marker. As a final note, I want to make sure to tell you that if you're a beginner, you need to go easy on yourself and give yourself lots of time to practice these techniques . Eventually, you will build up confidence and know exactly what Mark is needed. Where in the beginning, you're still learning what? How to build value with with the marks.
