About This Class

In this class I demonstrate the first three banjo rolls every banjo student should learn.  They are alternating thumb, forward-reverse, and forward.

I will also address how to quickly read tab and other fundamentals.

I cover the standards, "Nine Pound Hammer" and "Cumberland Gap"

1. Alternating-Thumb-Roll: neither My name's Jodi Hughes and in today's less we're gonna talk about your very first banjo rule. This is what I always teach my beginner students. When they come in the first couple of lessons, just gonna kind assume that you know, the string numbers. The strings are numbered. 12345 So that kind of backwards 12345 Up here is your district, and this role that we're gonna learn is called the alternating thumb role. And just so you understand, row patterns are not an exact sequence of notes. They could be on different strengths. Row patterns have to do with the motions of your fingers. So alternating somewhere way think that means it means basically that you're gonna be playing your song, some other finger thumb, some other finger. So I mean, you literally could do this. You could go on. That would be an alternating thumb technical. But in this case, we play three finger style. So we're gonna bring the middle and let's just say we went Maybe, um, some coiner you could do this? Uh, granted, there are certain patterns that are more common than others. So the one of the teacher today is the one I would consider the most common bit. Let's go ahead and get started. So we're gonna hit our third string with our thumb on, and then our pointer finger is going to hit the second straight there. And then the fifth string is going to be played by our thumb on and then the first string with our middle thing. So I'll give it. Give you this numerically, it's going to be three to 53 to 5. Let's do it with me. Okay. 12 ready? Go. 3 to 532 five. What? Maybe say the numbers out like I'm doing 3 to 51 Now, you're probably thinking, Well, you know, maybe two weeks from now, this will start to get easier. And you're gonna wonder, What do I do here? What am I looking for? So the things that you're looking for is that each note is perfectly even the space you want it to be on 234 You don't want it to be one to before something like that, right? So it has to be evenly spaced on 234 This imagine like a clock ticking with something you haven't Metrodome. Great. If not worry about it. Just trying to stay in time. The other thing is you're looking to make each note the same volume. So you have a beautiful, pretty sound here. You want it to sound great. You want to sound nice and even not like this percent. So there it's jagged. It's kind of rough, right? We want this nice, smooth sound. Hey said, this is the fundamentals evangel playing. It's just that simple roll right there getting that perfectly in time and in the nice tone that's going to set you apart from, say, all the other banjo player. So this stuff we're learning on kind of day one here kind of makes or breaks you. So that's what's called the alternating thumb. And I go over this one more time. 3513 to 51 Now, as we get get into this, we progressed. I'm just going to kind of give you a demonstration of what a person might be able to do with just one roll path. So I'm not gonna change my right hand, but this is gonna be all over the place. We'll get to that. Trust me. So you go way. So I left him, was moving all about, but right had never change patterns. Now the other thing I was gonna tell you is that you can move over to other strings and you could play, Say, the four string and you could play before too high for on. Ideally, you want to be able to kind of jump around 3 to 5 months or to just get your hands and fingers moving through these patterns on different strengths. OK, so that's our lesson on alternating them. Take care. 2. Forward_Reverse_Roll: Hey, welcome back to Part Two of our began her banjo role. Siri's last lesson. We talked about our alternating thumb, and then this lesson, we're gonna talk about what is called the Ford Reversible. So once again, reiterate these roles are finger motions, not strength. So keep that in mind. So what is a Ford reverse role? A forward reverse role. First off, we have the word for word and forward on the banjo. Anytime we use this, this order of of fingers thumb index middle. So basically just going 123 that is a forward motion. So if you're going thumb index middle some index middle thumb index Middle, you have a forward Moshe. So with that said, what do you think? Reverses reverse. It's the exact opposite. So you're going middle index some middle index stuff. So if you put these together, what you get is this thumb index middle middle Index dump, and you could literally just kind of lay your fingers on the string and you get this on. That's a forward reverse motion, but that's a fast. We have one problem here. Um, it doesn't quite add up to enough notes. Well, we wanted to add up to four beats and this would just be one and three. And so we only have three beats. So we're missing something. So here's what we do. We have to add in a few things we're gonna add in. Here's the strings. I'm gonna give you the string numbers, just like last time. We're gonna hit the third strong, and then the second string on, then the first drink s. Oh, here we go. 321 and then guess what? Get the fifth string. That's the one that's not part of the motion. Right, So we're gonna go 321 way. Go again. 32152 with me. 12 Ready? Go! Bring Teoh. Okay, now that's the forward part. I got four notes were missing full. So here comes. The other four were gonna go with the reverse on 23 and then the last note is gonna be the first string with our middle thing. So that reverse part is one, 231 on 31 So the whole thing here goes, I'll do it And then I'll tell you the numbers again. I s So it is 3211231 one more time. Thing is what's called forward reverse role. So, like I didn't last video, I can kind of just demonstrate with some bar chords. It's kind of interesting what you could do way get to the left and all that right now, this country right here. So let me just demonstrate what we could do if we take the forward reverse role on mix it with the alternating several. So maybe one time I might go alternate some thing back to think this is something you should practice. You want to be able to take your right hand on go from one year goes thing way. Just so you know, maybe in the future we'll talk about this. This is what's called a bar. Sort of just laying my finger across the banjo. Really easy court. Good. So in summary, you have four reverse role on. You should just do this as many times as you possibly can. The goal is to get it into your subconscious. Basically, where you just talk on you don't have to think about. That's when you know you have and what you can do that then what I want you to do. Here's kind of a assignment, if you will. That's a stressed you out. But an assignment? Yes. So what we gonna have is gonna have four Bieber's roll away alternating though on you just switch back and forth between these way we keep our principles of a stay in time. What does that mean? Every notice, even and then be we want to make sure we have a beautiful sound. And then I leave you with one last thing. So Ford reverse role. It takes one time. Ah, add up to eight notes or four beats one and two and three m four and is how you account that Alternate some. How many times does it take? It's only four. So altering thumb it takes twice to make it add up to four beats on one and two and three and four. So always keep that going in your head. One and two and three and four. So, so far, we've done all turning thumb and Ford reverse role. And then next time, I'm gonna learn one more pattern and then we're gonna talk about what do we do with these patterns? Okay, take care 3. Forward-Roll: Hey, welcome back to our third installment and our begin a role. Siri's here and into bass lessons. We're gonna talk about the food role, and I would dare say that this one is the one that's gonna make a break. Your banjo playing career. It's the most important one. So this is what's called a forward roll. The kind of review we've talked about on alternating thumb way talked about a forward reverse eso kind of review. What did we say? A Ford normal for it is any time you're going thumb index milk. So just like this, right here, so you could just kind of on that would be a forward motion. So everything that we covered up to this point has been eight notes long. We go back to alternating some notes for reverse on 2345678 reason being is what kind of accounting and four. So you wanted to be one and two and three and four am That would be the really so Today's role is a little special in that it is seven notes law. So what that means is that one of the notes has to last longer than the others. And before we get into the exact strings and fingers, I just want you to listen to the rhythm. So the rhythm is gonna sound like this, uh, on your love, putting extra weight into that one. And it's not always it lasting longer, but we're accenting just a little bit. And that's because that's gonna be the melody. So we're gonna have a way. So it's counted one, two and three and four. So let's get into the strengths. So first, no, we're gonna play is the third string with your thumb. That's the quarter note That's beat one and then you're gonna play 531531 Now what's unusual about this is the first notes thump on the second notice thumb as well on. Then the third string is your point to think. First drink is your middle eso its thumb Next middle some and next middle are the fingers. And then now I'm going to say the strings. 3531531 So I'll do it again. 33153 Okay, so this is a forward roll. I'll do this just a couple times and kind of loop it so you can hear what you're trying for . Uh ah. Give you count and you try it with me. One, two. Ready? Go. Uh, that's your forward roll. What's really great about the forward role is if you play a song, you're going to hear this in blue grass and all kinds of music. Country music. Theo there all I was doing was using this scroll and moving. I think up and down third strength. Get into that with our skills. But for now, just practice your full rope once again. One, two. Ready? Go! That's called a forward roll. And remember, that first note is held twice as long. So it's ordered out and then eighth notes. All right, take care. 4. How-to-practice-Rolls: Hey, welcome back. And our last lesson. We talked about our roles, so we're pretty much done with our three main roles for now. And what I want to do now is talk about out of practice them. So we have alternating some way forward. Reversal on way. Had a forward through these once again. Alternate some 35251 And it takes two of those to make one measure, and then a forward roll is three. I remember with that one, you're gonna have 1/4 note at the beginning, I think. Ford Reversible 321 500. So you probably gonna practice this for a while. They take you a couple months to get all these. Okay? So don't feel bad if you don't get them in a week. It's kind of like a month process. Now, once you can do that and what is kind of the next step, So remember, First thing first, you wanna make sure you have a nice the solid timing you can practice for the men Sonoma. Just make sure that everything is 1236 And also make sure that the notes are even, So you don't get a a jacket. Sound wanted to kind of envision being a smooth so that after after that, he was kind of I would say, stage two of all that is okay. And we're talking maybe months from now. But you want to take one roll and then go into the other one. So I'm gonna take alternating thumb and then go into Ford Reverse will be Theo. This time we'll do alternating into forward. So, Theo, two goals in this practice going back and forth between all right? And then what? We would say maybe the final stage to this final stage. But the next stage is to take all three of them and kind of jumble them all up. So here goes alternate way. Theo. Basically, what you want to do is one Practice these randomly so you can jump from, say, forward reverse Ultimate thumb forward for turning film for every person just jump around over and over. Okay, We call that Inter, leave a random practicing, and that's gonna get you further long ban block practicing, which is just doing the same thing over and over. All right, so wait till you know them kind of solid before you start this journey of this type of practicing because it's gonna take a little bit to get used to jumping around. But that would be what I call states to there and let me know if you have any questions. 5. Cripple-Creek-Part-One: Hey, welcome back to Jodi Hughes music. And in today's lesson, we're gonna talk about the old favorite Cripple Creek and get you rolling on that. Okay, so let's go ahead and jump right in. I want you to take your middle finger and put it on the fifth fret of the first string, and we're gonna hit the first string with our middle finger down here. Okay? So hit it twice, then the finger comes off. We're gonna hit that open. So fifth fret of the first string with our middle finger twice first string open and then second strangled eso these Air four notes and they are accounted. 123 Let's move on. Now we're gonna go to our C court, and that is done by going to the second fret of the first string and the first fret of the second string. And we're gonna put these both down at the same time. And that makes a secret. Hopefully, remember this guy? It is called a forward Reverse Roll Eyes is 3 to 1513 Now, the only difference is we're not gonna hold this core down for the whole duration of the role. like this. Wait. Take your hands off on the way back. We're gonna on the reverse. We're gonna go, so I go slower. It's 3 to 1 five. Open first string on 2nd 3rd open. 1st 1 more time. I jump from there back to the beginning and just review real quick So would start on the fifth fret of the first string. Here goes. I want you to pay attention to their is. We have quarter notes here. And then this part is twice as fast. Those air eighth notes. So it goes. 123 Far more time. Throw this next real hope for you. Remember this one as well? This was called a alternating thumb role. That was 313 to 5, going twice. But we're gonna have our finger on the second fret of the third string while doing the alternating thinks role once again is and two and three and rhythmically. Okay, so your right hand the numbers are 3 to 51 3 to 5. Let's jump back to the very beginning and do all three measures. Ready? Go. All right, hang in there. We got one more measure and then we're done. with this portion of this all hit the fourth string open. I call that the bass string. OK, and then the second fret that same string. So we're gonna go open four second Fred of the fourth string on, and then we're gonna go to the third string. And these were all done with your son. Three notes, four string, third string open. And then we're gonna do this very unique thing. It's called a pinch. And that is done by hitting the fifth string your thumb in the first ring with your pointer finger. A same time I referred to him as the timekeeper because he's just there on 34 to take up the space of the fourth bees. Not really. Melody. Let's go back to the beginning. Let's get through this whole thing. 12 Ready? Go way. Okay, so there you have it. That is the first portion of Cripple Creek, and we'll get to the next part here soon. Thank you. 6. Reading-TAB-Faster: Hey, welcome back to Jodi Hughes music. And in today's lesson, we're going to talk about how to get you reading tab faster. And if you're anything like most of my beginner student, you probably have been sitting in front of the tab. You probably sat there. Have been like, Okay, third string, two minutes fast. And you're like, OK, second string. Okay, that says fish straying. Okay, that's his first rate is very slow process. It's like that for every single individual in the beginning. You know, nobody grows up knowing how to read this quickly. Um, so you're gonna have to go through That's just gonna take some time. But my goal with this video is that, say, a couple months into your learning or maybe a year or however long we've been playing is to get you to do this faster. And I really thought about this a lot because I couldn't really read Tab really quickly and sheet music. And I've always thought about well, how what's going on in my brain when I'm doing this. So this video is going to kind of give you those tips and hints, if you will, so this first thing you're going to see on the page reading tap faster. This is all turning thumb and all right. And you see a bunch of weird lines all over the page that are not in normal tap music. So what are these? Let's get into that. So this first roll is alternating thumb on That is here. So what I've done here is I've shown you what is the shape and pattern of the role. And that's why I'm connecting them through diagonals. So what you have is you have a smaller Dagnall, and then it longer, smaller and then diagonal. So what I want you to do as you go back to your own tabs or maybe a new one is to take inventory. What are the underlying shapes? Don't read it individually. Note two note. Read the whole thing at once and look for these shapes. I'm going over in the video. Okay, This here is also on alternating thumb, but it starts on the fourth string hints the line is slightly longer, but technically, this should be a smaller line. And then a longer one smaller line and then a longer one. Okay, so that sounds like on. You can mix these up. You know, we're gonna talk about that as well. But the thing I want you to get out of this is don't sit here. Try to read this guy. Being able to re tap fast is a two step process. Number one. You have to know the roles. They have to be subconscious. And then number two, you have to be able to recognize them quickly. So this video is about recognizing them quickly in the written music, if you will. So here what I want you to do is just go through, look at the shapes and then say to yourself, OK, that's alternating film Thistle turning film on the fourth string and try to take a big picture kind of zoom out if you will, and take a big picture of what this looks like. So what? You'll see diagnose pointing towards the right. Okay, now let's move on from here. What's what comes up? Must go down, right? So why I say that? Because this goes up and this comes down, up and then down. So that's the contour and shape that we're looking for for a forward reverse role and I say that that the angles go to the right and then to the left. And this is s I'm not seeing here thinking about every individual note as I'm playing that I'm thinking, Oh, I recognize that shape. That's forward. Reverse role. And it's just automatically clicks. Okay? And you're probably wondering Well, what happens when I get other notes involved with my left hand? We're gonna cover that. Okay, but Ford reverse is a up and down shape, and it's a diagonal to the this way and then a diagonal to the left. Okay, so four reverse, take a big picture of that shape. Lastly, we have forward rolls. All right, so four rows air. Kind of like alternating thumb that says for roll the kind of like a altering thumb, But they are all the same distance this time. Now, you can have one shorter than the other one, but most of time, they're gonna be of equal length. And I would dare say that forward role was the most important one out of everything else. Show you OK over here is what I call my quarter note forward role. That is 30315313531531 This one's very easy to spot because you got that quarter note out there by himself, and then you have two lines to diagnose. Right this way. All right, so just kind of take a big picture of that. And remember, diagonals point to the right. I would dare say that. Trying to get this one and this one separator probably gonna be the toughest Once, this was probably the one that people recognize the fastest. All right, I'm a move myself out of the way here. Look at that technology. And now we're gonna probably get to Your question is what happens when I get the old left hand involved? Right. So what's going on here? How do I read this fast? How to make it instant. All right, so a couple process steps here. Number one, what is the shape? The shape is goes up, it goes down, so that should just automatically trigger forward reverse role. I'm not going to sit there and read every string. All right. However, I do have to know one thing here, which is two things. What does it start on and where does it in. In this case, we're lucky because it starts and ends at the same spot. But this could come down to say their lips move that around, but it could move down to a different string. Um, and in that case, you have to have take mental note of that. So the first thing is gonna go off his Ford reverse shape and then second thing, the first note and the last note. I'm not going to read these notes in between. Believe it or not, it's really just gonna be the these important ones here, and that's gonna enable me to process it fast. All right, but what about all these numbers? That's probably what you're asking next, right? Well, luckily for us, that banjo music tends to be chord based. So what I'm gonna do seem to take a big, quick survey of this and say, Is that accord that I recognize, like, forget the right hand? Just look at the left hand. Is that a core like don't try to play it like this? Don't go. Uh, that's more like a guitar player or something. You know, you could hold it, But what we should be thinking here is Ah, this is a court. We recognize this. Turns out it's just a C chord. So all these individual notes, it's just telling you a court. And if the guy that writes the tab a lot, I'm still put a court appear taking mental notes that as well, So I kind of break this down for you is number one. Look at the shape. If it goes up and down, we know what's a full reverse number two. What? No. Does it start on? What note does it end on or the next? That last note. Okay, that's what I call the return. And then, thirdly, is this accord I recognize or something? Sometimes it's just a fragment like this is not even a full secrets. A partial see. So sometimes you have to take note to Is the fragment a picture of a bigger court? Okay, so I'm gonna just go down and review really quickly, and hopefully this is helping you all. I understand Tab a little better. And this works for music notation as well, because you don't want to read that note two note. Either we'll get to that more. But here the things to keep in mind. Look for shapes. Look for Contour. What direction doesn't go? Music is direction. So which way is this going? Okay, What? Which direction is the shapes going? Do not read. Note. Two. Note. You'll be there all day, right? It's a process you go through in the beginning. But as you as you progress, you want to get past that reading. No to know it's Train yourself to take in more and more information at once in Chuck's, if you will try to process one at a time so you don't want to do that, either. Is this what we've been talking about so eventually? Your goal is to be able to see shapes on a page and be able to take them in really quickly . So I advise you go through some old tabs that you already know how to play and see if you can kind of, you know, see the shapes. Or, if it's something new, break it down. You can. You know if you have a pencil, you might even draw the lines in to help you in the beginning, but eventually won't have to do that. Eventually, you'll just be able to just be able to process it really quickly. Okay? If you guys have any questions, let me know. All right, take care. 7. Banjo Lesson Speed up your left hand: Hey there. Welcome back to Jodi Hughes. Music has been a little bit since that, giving you guys some stuff to play around with. Today. I want to kind of help my beginners, maybe even beginner to intermediate students out. And this is something that's come up a lot and lessons here lately with my in person and my online students. So I want to kind of go over that it has to do with your left hand. And I call this anticipation, meaning that you're trying to move before you almost need to. Okay, so let me just kind of demonstrate. Let's just say you had a gun. A fret, The third friend of second string. And I'm just gonna play 15 to 15 to 15 to 1. I'm just gonna keep that forward roll going after the one like this, Okay, now, let's say that I needed to jump to the eighth fret of the second straight. Okay, so maybe something like this. Okay, so I went 15 to 15 to one jump 5 to 1, and I went to the eighth. Forensics drink. Now what affordably happens with a lot of beginners out there is. They don't properly anticipate the motion, so it couldn't. Doesn't have to necessarily be this jump, but this is just a good example. So what they'll do is they'll go 15 to 15 to one, and then they're gonna hit five, and then they try to move after they've already hit five. So they might do this on you see, they don't get their quite on time. And so a lot of times analyzed how my students will move their hands and this is the exact problem that's causing him to say quote, get out of top. So what you have to do is I always tell people anticipate with the open string, let that kind of get you there on time. So under this again and this time a. I noticed that as soon as I hit five my hands like a rocket, so to speak and gets out of there is jumping the gun a sprint, if you will. So I'm going 15 to 15 to one loon and then I'm already ready for the next note. But if I do this on, then try the move on late. So here is what it would look like if you do it properly. So a lot of times when we have these kind of giant shifts or things like that, it could even be safe from here to five. It doesn't have to be a far jump. It could just be on. Then you try to move your late once again. So what you want to do, Seo? What things? I have people practice to get their hands faster, so to speak. Their left hands and their fingers is I try to tell them to go one mawr mawr than what the measure says. So you would be going 15 to 15 to one, and then one more 5 to 1 and you practice. Maybe you have to do the five to. We could just go to the five. You could practice doing this on. You don't have to hit the second strain. You just you just practice. How did that? So it's this anticipation and that speed your brain and you thought up to say, Get there faster in your hands and everything will just work quicker and more coordinated. So aren't you to try this? It doesn't even have to be there. You could practice. It's a on the first ring you could play, you know, moving and just think. OK, how did that That one had a little bit more time? Because I had the second string open so soon as I hit five on there on the fifth fret of the first drink. So try to get your fingers to get there before they need to if you can, and you do that by moving them when you hit an open strength one last one. You could also do this sometimes when you're hitting the first train. So let's say I don't know. You have just 5 to 1 on. You needed to get to say the fifth fret of the second string. So what you want to do is you don't want to go on, then try to move. You want to go on, try to move as soon as you hit the first, right? Right, just kind of practice. The anticipation and the jumping the gun, if you will, maybe is a good name for, And I hope that this will help you speed up your left hand on a variety of songs. Take care 8. Banjo Lesson Left Hand Fretting Technique: Hey, welcome back to Jodi Hughes music. And in today's lesson, we're gonna talk a little bit more about the left hand in particular, the pressure that you're using to play the instrument and how that can affect your speed. Okay. And the other video we talked about anticipation, What I call jumping the gun. Hopefully you've checked that out of not go. Look at that. And maybe that will help. You is well in particular you nice to beginners. You definitely want to watch that. All right, so let's talk about this most of time. In our day to day life would grab objects and we kind of squeeze them. And a lot of us bring that same natural reaction to the instrument. And we want to grip the thing and squeeze really hard. Ah, lot of us are making the assumption that just because the instrument has France, if you put your finger there, that's gonna play in tune. But if you listen closely, who here go here. You can actually banned the note sharp. Sometimes that people have a lot of pressure. They actually physically been the string as a prose, depressing it. So let's figure out how to fix that and what you need to do to kind of and steal the right feel injured in your mind as you're practicing. Okay, So what I want you to do, I'm gonna put my finger on the third fret of the second string, but I'm not gonna press in. There's no sound sound coming out of it to set it on top of the string. And hopefully I'm gonna turn So you can see this a little better. They're gonna get that. I get a thud. Do not press in yet. So what I want you to do is just set your finger there, and then I want you to gradually press in and listen. You hear that buzzing? You have press in just a little bit more to get that buzzing going away. I want you to do it again. That's as much pressure as you need on the strength. Unfortunately, what happens is people keep going and they it's that Yeah, that kind of swell sound, if you will. So to figure out how much pressure you need to play, you just put your finger on top of straying Impress in until you make it clear sound. If it's like this, it's not right. You have to have a clear sound. But what I want I want you to understand is that is all the pressure that you need anything beyond that is just wasted energy. And not just that, but pressing really hard. You have to release really hard before you move. So the less you press end unless you have to release, thereby speeding you up. If you're pressing in a lot, you're gonna have to release a lot and then move. So the less pressure that you used the batter as long as you're getting a clear tone, we have to be very specific about that. You have to make sure it's a great tone. Otherwise, you're not pressing it enough. Sometimes that could be a problem. Most of time. People pressing art of their fingers are not in the right position. So that's my little quick tip on the left hand. I might go on a little more detail. It's a more video Stay tuned. This is my website. Jodi used music and my block. My name's Jodi Hughes, and I'm here to teach you yet another essential bluegrass lick. And the one we're gonna learn today sounds a little something like this. Okay, Before we learn any lick, we must learn the proper context. What chords doesn't fit? How many beats is it? Okay, that way we know how to practice it and put it to use this little pattern here. It's just a G feel. So any time you have a G chord, you kind of throw that in as a feel. Another real common use for this particular lick is two hours of video G. So let me show you how that fits in like that. That's very common. So you want to learn it that way as well? All right now, time to break down this link for you. The 1st 2 notes. I tend to play with my thumb and then my index finger. However, a lot of people just play thumb thumb. It's up to you. There's no correct way here as long as you get the right notes in the right time. So it's the fourth string open, followed by the second fret of the four sir. Once again, you can go from in Mexico. You can play something. The next note is going to be the third string Open. And I always play that with my thumb. And most people do too. So here we go. Followed by the second fret of the third string. Oh, sliding up to the third fret. And as soon as you slide up, you must hit the second string open with your point of fingers. So once again, eso that whole thing so far, okay? And you're going to do a pull off after that from the third fret of the third string to the second friend. And you really want to snap this guy? You know, put some up to it, make it sound really nice and clear on hard. Okay, now, here we go on, A soon as you do that, pull off. You're gonna hit the first string open. So that whole last little section is right. It's very quick, unfortunately, right? Course I'm hitting the first string with my middle finger there. Right on. The next measure of the lich is gonna be the third string open. So that's the beginning of the next measure. after the lich, and that's how we have to result. Has to result back. Teoh, do this slow one more time. Put it to use over on one of those little trials. I did that. You heard me get a little bit of a finger now in there, and that's okay. You're gonna hear players do that. But I really urge you to kind of set up down on that and really put some power into it. All right. Hope you enjoy this. That was yet another essential bluegrass like take care. 10. NinePoundHammer Lesson: Hey, welcome back to Joni Hughes music. And in today's video, we're gonna learn the old song £9 Hammer. I really like this song because it's only eight bars long. So not a whole lot to memorize here, and it's gonna teach you the fundamentals, like how to use your forward roll and things like that. So let's go ahead and get into it. We're gonna have to pick up notes and you're gonna basically be playing the four string with your thumb. Here s a four string open on And then the third fret of the four string. OK, so that's just gonna be on those air to know. So basically, the way you would count the song off, you would have 12 on these air gonna represent three and four So and then we're gonna go straight into our forward roll, which hopefully you know, from my other videos, you're gonna play 353153 and play very close attention here that the first notes with your thumb three and then five free one is thumb index middle voice. So here's the first little piece. All right. Moving on third string open on And then we're gonna do what's called a pinch Pinch is when you play the first and fifth together. So here is the 1st 2 minutes, Theo. And to complete that second measure, we're going to come to the third string. Second fret on and we're gonna do what's called a slide sliding from 2 to 3 on the third string on bond. While we do this, we're going to do a forward roll, which hopefully remember it is 3 to 51 So just that again, 3 to 51 And the thing you're looking for here is Don't do this on then hit the second string. You want to make that second string come right As soon as you slide, it s so if we start back from the beginning, here goes three, 53153 Spies discover more times, Theo a little bit easier. So from here, we're gonna just jump into R C Major chord, which is the second fret of the first string. And then the first Fred of the second string. And we're gonna do just a Ford reverse role. Three, 23 goes Gonna have to measures with that same exact role. So you're right. It's just gonna keep going a little bit more difficult. We're gonna end up with what's called a C seven course. So while holding the Sea Court down, you're going to try to reach the third fret of the third string with your peaking. Now, I warn you, a lot of people can't do this in the beginning, and that's perfectly fine your fingers to simply not flexible enough. It's like muscles. What not? You have to kind of keep working at them. So these two measures should sound like this. The If you can't do this, it's not that critical. What I would suggest is to get rid of the ring finger and only have two fingers down. And so you could do something like this. The first ring is now going to be open. You could go have to do that. It is fine Now from there we go back to our forward roll. 35315 So let's take this all the way back from the top. Here are your pick up notes. 12 way. We're almost there. Don't give up. All right, so here we are. Second fret of the third string right with our middle finger there, and our right hand is gonna be doing afford reverse role. That's going a little bit different. So for three months, say that again for three on five and then reverse 131 So here's the whole thing. Once again for 3113 this is gonna go over a d cor. That's what this eyes there. It's a deep here is also in the d chord. So we get this nice sound way. Have deep eyes, what after that four roll again? Three. Fly 313 and then the final measure is three match to play through the whole thing 12 way. So that's all there is to £9 hammer. I'll play through a really quick 11 to Theo on you guys home and there I'll just go ahead and tell you if you stick with me here. Hopefully what we can do is we can start adding and fancy or stuff, and over the next couple months, maybe we could start to add in things and maybe make it sound more like this. We owe See that I had a couple of things with my left hand. But those are critical to the melody. We have to start somewhere. And that is the basics there. All right, take care. 11. Cumberland Gap-Melody: Hey, welcome back to our beginner banjo. Of course. And today's lesson We're gonna talk about the old song Cumberland Gap, and this is quite a basically user friendly. It's not gonna be a difficult song here. It's only four bars, and we're gonna give you a just a very basic beginner version and then we'll talk about how to build on it. Okay, so let's go ahead and get started. I'm gonna play through the song so you can hear what you're gonna learn, and then I'll break it down and go into all the details. So here goes way. Okay, So let's break this guy down. So here's the first role we're gonna go 4 to 1. Eso It looks like this on those air. Just what we call eighth notes one and two. So 4 to 15 and then we're gonna take our pointer finger and come up to the third string. Ah, hit that. And then we're gonna do it's called a pinch. A pinch is when you hit the first on the fifth together. So here's the complete measure. I said this song is only four measures law in this particular pattern is going to be the first measure and the fourth measure. So why don't we have two more measures? Can get better than that. Just four. Manage. Right. So this is the first major. I think that is our middle finger's gonna come to the second friend of the third strength. So second friends, third string, and we're gonna go forward with our fingers Here. This is going to be 3 to 1 once again. 321 holding the second fret of the third string down on, then. From here, this guys is gonna hop over to the second fret of the first strength. And you're gonna hit the first drink with your middle finger down here and then once again , a pinch eso this whole measure, the second measure looks like this on that pitch is while keeping this death, I'm gonna do this slow. Here's the numbers of the strings. 32 on five jump eso. Let's put those two phrases together. Those two measures here calls. I recommend this practicing just that first when you jumped there and you do the pants, you actually hang out there. This is a e minor. Stay there and then our role is gonna be a Ford reversible. You're gonna go five 5 to 5. Keeping the second front of the first drink them 5 to 5 gonna go the opposite way. This guy jumps back where he was at, and you're gonna do a reverse one. Fine. So here's that whole measure. The measure again. 5 to 51 toe plane one. So from the top here, girls. All right, where do we go from there? What did I say? The fourth measure is to say, Mr First Measure. So it turns out you just go back to what you did in the beginning. Eso Here's the whole thing. I go superstar this time. Ready? Go, Theo! BarreChords: Hey, welcome back In today's lessons, we're gonna talk about how to play in different positions, and this is gonna help you as you want to learn how to play in different keys. Okay, so hopefully most of you already know the bar chord like this, OK? And basically all I'm doing you don't have to bar across all five strings. I'm just for the purpose is off today. I'm only gonna bar the 1st 3 strings. So hopefully understand how this kind of works is that your banjos tune to G, and this works just like your Siris of notes. So this would be g and then the second Fred is gonna be a and then be is two frets up, see, is up a friend And then finally, here we are d on. And that's where I want to talk about today. I want to concentrate on how to play out of the key of D. It's a very common key that you're gonna want to learn how to play. Okay, so basically what we can do and I'm just gonna be doing like, a for 32132131 Roll A Ford role you could take this deep position here Instead of just doing this sort of thing, you can start to add other fingers. So the 1st 1 I want you to try to add is the ninth fret of the first string. And you could do this with your ring finger or your pinky. I'm gonna use my pinky here. And so you can do things like and all I've done is I did the role. 321 Pinky comes down 32 on Pinky comes back up. And so with that little pattern thistles. Moveable. So another court in the key of D is a G court. So you could say, move up to the 12th fret And now here's your G Same exact pattern s. Here's maybe three. Let's go back to Dio on And then another court that's in the key of D would be in a court. So then you could slide up to the second fret and once again, eso with just one pattern moving through these various courts, you can, you know, come up with variations on this. It doesn't have to be Oh, you could start with your finger down and then take it off. You could do something like this thing. Okay, So but I want what I really want to kind of emphasize here is to get out the sound of where you just kind of rolling through courts. Because that's a big problem for a lot of people is you use the free fingers thes thes guys here to add in notes, and you're gonna learn how to just kind of pop in, Theo unquote improvise with those. Okay, Another one. Just to kind of throw this at you is you can also add the ninth fret of the third string with your pinkie or your ring finger here, and it would sound like this. So I'm gonna be up, down, and then back up. Do this again. What's again? You can move it around, so it's kind of give you a little demonstration. Now, I'm certainly not gonna cover every bit of this in this one video, but I just want to show you where you're headed with this thing. E o e. Use these fingers, Theo, You know, I often have. Students will try to do the barker with this finger, and I say, Well, the reason you don't want to do it with that finger is because then this is not gonna be so fun. So make sure you're using your pointer finger here. Make sure you're getting really close to the fret without being on top of it. You don't want to be on top because then you get a really dull sound. And then the other thing that's really important to see my thumb back here blind your thumb up with this finger. Don't make it up here. That's a common problem. Or down here, line it up with this or your middle finger here and keep it like that. Like a clamp, if you will. I've been playing a long time. It's still kind of hurts because you can't really callous that part of your finger. So just kind of stick with these bar cores. But I go out with just kind of one more demonstration real quick and hope you get the idea . Used these fingers and fine sounds. I think you could do all of them. You could. Okay, so that is showing you how to play out of the bar chord. More on that later 13. Angeline The Baker-Melody: Hey there In today's lesson, we're going to talk about the old song and July and the banker. This one is going to be slightly different than the other ones that we've done because it's gonna be in the key of D. All right, so how do we prepare for the key of D? First off, we got to know our D accord, but the main thing with the banjo to understand is that when you're in the key of D, fist string is tuned to G, which is not inside of a deke or so what you're gonna want to do. Hopefully you have what are called fifth string spikes or festering cable that you can keep all the fifth string online. I have these little spikes and they just go under there and this gets tuned up to a three old tiny ways to just crank this thing up to a and you can certainly do that. But if you do that for, say, four or five months over and over, it might break eventually. So just understand that this video is being done with the festering cabled up. If you don't know a lot about that, you could, of course, look it up online. There's little festering capers like Velcro that you can put them. But if you don't have the spice, so what we're gonna be doing, we're gonna be working out of this shape here, which is the fourth fret of the first string, the third fret of the second string. And then the second fret of the third string. So from high to low for three two, and that's gonna be like our little go to position here. That's what we're gonna be using the most. So let's go ahead and get started. So what you're gonna do, you gonna be holding this shape and you're gonna want to stay there for a while. You're gonna hit the third strength, and then this ring finger that's free here, it's gonna pop into the fourth fret of the third string on, and you're gonna use your thumb on both of these notes down here on then finally, the pointer finger. It's gonna hit the third fret of that second string. So here's the rhythm and the rhythm is going to be 1234 So you're gonna have four beats in this measure and Then you're gonna come back to the second fret of the third string with your thumb on going to the fourth fret of the searching again. So a lot of the same notes for different rhythms here goes, and then to resolve, we go back to the second string. Third fret. So here's the whole phrase. Okay, I'll do it a couple more times, and I counted out for you. So it's 1234 So that's what we call in off beat you're gonna hear. Come in on the and of 4123 the way. The That's the faster rhythm. Okay, and then it does the same thing again. But this time it's straighter. It's 243 and the it's gonna go to the third string. Second fret. So this phrase is same exact thing. Almost second fret of the third string. Fourth fret of the third string, the restaurant third fret second string and then finally back to the second fret of the third string. So that part is just straight quarter notes. That's your second phrase. I'll do it again. The first phrase has this off beat thing going. The second phrase is very straight right on the quarter notes. So here's the whole thing. Notice how there's a hole there. Rest eso Those are the measures of deep now gonna come to a G chord And what we're gonna do is hopefully you understand the Cripple Creek slide that we did in the other video. You're gonna go from 2 to 4 on the third string slide while doing that, your role is going to be 3 to 513 to 51 So we're gonna do that slide twice. Theo wears the whole thing. Okay, Now back to the first phrase eso hoping here's what I'm not doing tablature because, honestly, it makes it more complicated. Think of music and sentences. So you have this little sentence. The first sentence that has to off beat second sentence is the same thing, but straightened out with quarter does. And then you go back to the first phrase. So here's how I like to think about phrase one phrase to back to phrase one. And then you have 1/3 phrase which is gonna be completely different. But before we get to that, I go through this a couple more times. Rest rest. Okay, here is the third and final phrase to this verse. You gonna come to the second string? Seventh fret. And here's the rope at 25 to 15 to one. So we call that a forward roll that IHS 5 to 15 to now. Watch the hand here, though. It doesn't just stay put. I'm doing one thing at a time. You're gonna move it from 7 to 5, 23 in the middle of these roles, I'll do the whole thing and then break it down. So here we go. Slow. All right, so several fret 51 Then move to the fifth fret of the second string, 5 to 1. So that whole matter is this once again on down the three on the second string. 25252 So you roll for that whole part? There is 25 to 152 to 5 to 152 All right, he goes again. Thing Notice how I move in the middle of the role. This song is indeed, and that is a denote that is your final destination. Okay, So may play this up to speed one time, and then I'll slow it back down and play it through completely. Here goes, rest, rest. So that's the melody to the A section what we call a verse. You're just gonna repeat that again and the next video, we'll talk about the B section, but just a couple of words of advice and some things that make it sound more professional. So I have these little rest in there just teaching you nothing but the mentally. But you can always fill in with your right hand on some of the notes like they're All I did is I just put a 3 to 1 so it doesn't have to be that you could literally do like a pinch. Eso you have options here. You don't have to do it exactly like I'm doing it. But just understand what the melody is. It's this Okay, so hopefully that is gonna help you out with Angela and a big if you do have any questions just posted in the comments there. And July the baker. And as you can see, I've changed shirt since the first part. So it's been a few days since I recorded that, but I'm getting a little bit different this time. I'm gonna play through the thing before we learn It s o The fifth string is tuned up to a Okay, so here goes. And one thing I hope is that you can hear some things in there that you've already learned . So there's gonna be some carry over from the A section into the B section. Okay, let's go ahead and get start. So, first and foremost, you have a deep core that runs at the seventh Fret Bar chord there. So that's where we're gonna be at. That's kind of like our go to position here. So, while I'm boring the seven friends, my role is going to be 123 But instead of it being here, what's gonna happen? You can see my ring finger. You can also use your pinky. It's gonna drop in the ninth fret of the surgery, and that's kind of like the little theme of this part of the song. So once again, 123 and these were just quarter notes. Now, at that point, the bar, it kind of gets taken off. But you're going to still keep this seven thread of the second string down in the role eyes going to be 132 So the ninth fret of the third string in the seventh fret up the second string are actually still down and your going on 32 So here's the whole phrase. Seventh fret of the second string and then back to the third string ninth fret andan Finally home base. Here is the first string open That's our d Remember the songs in the Key of D So here's the whole phrase. I'm gonna walk through the slow one more time The bar comes up, fingers are on seven and nine here of the third string and 3 to 3 bomb. So while this is down 1231 way we're going to repeat. This is the second phrase, and the first half of it is the same as the other one. So you're here again. The difference is at the end. 1231 Open Done. Better. Right hand here. First string open. So here's the two little pieces. Rest final destination. First string there and then they're going to come to the 12th fret of the second string, and you're gonna pay your forward role to 5 to 15 to one. Now you're gonna see on the video what I did here. And you can do this. You don't have to. Rather than just do that, you're going to see that I slid into it from the 10th. Fret I went, but the role is still the same. I'm going to 5 to 152 So here's the whole I think it's the 1st 4 measures here. This'll Ford wrong is slightly modified. Normally we go to 5 to 15 to one. But all I'm gonna do this time is I'm gonna go to 5 to 152 and I'm gonna leave out that last one because that's gonna give me time to get back up here to my original phrase. So after this, I go back to my first phrase again. You learn that part, right? Let's put all this together. We don't have a little bit more left. It's gonna go pretty quick here, actually. Slide first phrase. Yes. What comes next? This ought to be very familiar. Because we did this last time. You're gonna be on the seventh ahead of the second string, and you're gonna be going to 5 to 15 to one. And here is the part that we did in part A I over get even though you can watch the video party. But here it is. Seventh fret fifth. Fret to the third fret of the second string while doing the following roll. 5215 To notice how I move before the role was over with on our final destination is the denote here to 5 to 152 So I'm gonna do this a couple times slow. So you get the idea. 12 ready? Go rest. Okay. And just so you understand, the form of this tune is a section twice, and then the B section twice. I'm gonna play this up to speed this B section here so you can hear. Here goes and then you would repeat that. Okay, so that's the B section and align the baker. If you have any questions, just let me know. 15. Shady-Grove: Hey there. In today's lesson, I'm gonna talk about the old classic Shady Grove. And before we begin, I want to make sure you understand this, that there's only two chords in this song. There's a D minor on a C major chord. Now, when you hear other professionals play this, they may play a fancy arrangement. You know, they might throw saying F chord and that's a common thing. But for the most part, the bare bones part of this tune is just the minor and see Major. And as we move through this arrangement, I'm gonna point out where those occur. Okay, so let's just go ahead and jump right into it. First thing first. You want your fifth string tuned to a on. You can do that by spiking, and if you have to tune up, that's OK. I would prefer that one day you get a spike those so you don't potentially break the string . OK, so mental finger is going to go on the third fret of the second strength and the right hand is going to go on. That role pattern is 25 to 15 Do it. They pay very close attention to the rhythm. It's 12 and three and four. And from there this finger does not lift up and then reset. What we want to happen is you're here and you simply are just going to move your finger down his slides down. Not inaudible slide, but just kind of eases down to the fifth fret of the second strength. And from there I'm gonna play to one, and they watch my pointer finger here. He just pops into the fifth fret of the third string. So it's 213 long on back to 321313 And at that point, I'm gonna do what's called a pinch, which is you pitch the fifth and the first drink together. So these two bars at that point, once again, this finger never leaves the strength. He just slides right on back up to the third fret of the second string again. And once again, we're gonna have 1/4 note, And then this ring finger is gonna pop into the third fret of the first string and you're gonna play to 52 on. And then this one slides up to the fifth fret the of the first rank. I'll go over measure three again. So 252 on one are the string numbers and we're kind of holding our fingers down at the third fret of the first and second strings. Kind of that little shape there. So too 5 to 1. And then this finger just slides up a long string fifth fret. And then here, this is our court. This is I d minor court that I was telling you about. It is spelled out 76 and seven counting from the first string up and you'll see this in the tap. OK, that is a D minor court and I came up this little role. It's not a standard role, I don't guess, but I like the sound of it. It's 132313 to 3. And it sounds like that point. You're gonna take these two fingers. Don't use your thumb, these two fingers, and you're gonna hit the first and second strings a same time. So that measures. Sounds like this on. Finally, we just fill in. I call the festering at timekeepers. Sometimes he's just there to keep your time. Not really carrying a melody percent. So let's play the first line of our tab. Okay, here goes Theo. All right. And now on to the second line. Now, at this point, you can take your pointer finger and just bar the 10th fret. Okay? And you don't have to bar all the way across. I'm just barring the first to string some of my students. Like the bar. All three strings are all for it, You know, it's up to you. Whatever. You feel comfortable. I like to borrow his minimum as possible. I don't want to do any more work than I might have to do. OK, it's kind of like lazy fingers here. So at that plan to use a role and it's going to be one too long Fight. And I will tell you that that is a standardized role that you're going to see quite a bit on 215 And from there we jump back to our D minor position. 1215 Again. So that is. Here goes, uh, so we're jumping from the bar. All right, we're gonna learn later on this. That list looks like an F board, but it turns out of the mire with a little extra note on top. I don't want to get into it in this lesson. Maybe another lesson. And but just understand that it's a special kind of D minor. So you're not really playing an F three? Okay, those are just the miners with 1215 rolls. Not gonna jump to a Sikh, warned you gonna bar the fifth fret and same role. I kept it the same 1215 And then finally in your seek or down here, which is the second fret of the SEC up first ring. First fret of the second string in 1 to 1 thought. So let's put all that together D minor and our 1 to 15 roll that's up to you with that bar . I just go ahead and tell you that sometimes in my videos you'll see that I don't do the bar . I used the ring in middle finger. I like to do that because if I use those fingers, then when I go ready to play that the minor Aiken Lily, slide that now again and then same thing here. I don't have to reset my ring finger along that for a string. You kind of just moves like this. But if it's easy for you to do the bar and reset your finger, that's okay. We're not talking about 100% correct answer here. It's a little subjective, but whatever you know works for you is what we want. So we have the minor to the minor, and then this is the same major to see, mate. Oh, all right. Last couple measures here. We're gonna grab a D. Minor court appeared top, and that is spelled out 33 two. Okay, right there. And once again, we're gonna have a kind of a The first string is gonna be our lead note, but the role is gonna be a little bit different. It's gonna be 13 to 5. So 13 to 5 while holding 18 minor chord, and then go to your what I call the partial. See, I called the partial, See, because you're not having to fret that you're not playing that strings. You don't have to fret. Some people ask, Do I need to make the whole seek or master? That is No. If you want to, you can. It's just more work for you to have to do okay. Or if you just want the practice of moving around with your fingers. So here's the pattern again on 3 to 5. C chord on three. Too far. So once again on, then I'm gonna jump back to what we did for the very first measure of the song, which is I'm gonna play the third fret and second string, and we're gonna go to 5 to 15 to one. So I want to play through that whole thing really slow for you this time. Okay? Okay. So on that last measure, make sure you start with your pointer finger with your right hand. 5152 Okay, so that completes the first variation of Shady Grove. Let's go ahead and get into the second variation. And with this particular variation, basically all I did was I took the variation that we just did, and I add what they call ornamentation is to it. And I just changed it up slightly, so we would have some variety. You know, this tune doesn't have a whole lot cord, so we have to create interest in other manners. So let's go ahead and talk about this. So whenever we have a melody, that's just simply they're one of the ways us banjo players. We create some interest. So to speak is we hammer on on hope you already know what the hammer on is, but I'll go over this briefly. You're going to start from the second fret of the second string. You hit the note and your left hand does all the work. See, I only hit it one time. I didn't hit it twice. I didn't go with this hand only hit it once and then with my middle finger, this hammers into the third fret of that same strength. So we have. And then once again, 5 to 1 and then we're gonna drop this finger into the second fret of the first string, and we're gonna play 5 to 1. So I kept the role the same for this measure as in the first variation. I just added a couple of things a to that point, this finger lifts up. This one does not move. He stays where he's at. Like I said, we want to have a little motion is possible. And we're gonna play 5 to 15 And then this finger is gonna hop up to the first fret of the second string from one little single note. So here's measure two of the second variation. Okay, it will be measured. 10 I believe in the tab there. So on, then we're gonna do a pinch, which is dis functioning as a timekeeper once again. So we have those two measures way. So those are the first to measures of that second variation, so to speak. Now we're gonna jump right on back into that hammer on. But this time this finger is going to pop in its the ring finger, and he comes down to the third fret of the first drink. So after the hammer, on 5 to 1 again, we're gonna keep going back to that. 5 to 1. Better on here. We go straight out of the first creation. Now, here's where it does change. We're gonna jump back into the d minor. But this time I changed the role on you. I want to creep some interest. Okay? Want to keep some variety? So from here, we're gonna play 15 to 13 to five. Go over that again eso is 12 and three and four and is the rhythm. Here are the numbers of the strings that you're playing one 5 to 13 to five holding a d chord at the seventh fret. Okay, So from the top of the second variation, I want you to hear a little quicker so you can hear the context. It's kind of hard to hear all those ham rolls and stuff really slow. And here, the context of the two. Okay, so last line of metal tab and we're gonna be on the 10th fret barring once again. And we're gonna also be playing one too long. Five. But I kind of played a trick on you when I got to hear, we expected to go to the 1 to 15 again. But I just actually just take took these two fingers and and I pinched the first and second strength. So it sounds like this thing on five for a timekeeper on. Then I did the same thing here, barring on then looking those two and then I have a timekeeper on my father. So let's go through that last line on on. We're gonna hop into that d minor shape. But there's only one little difference. Then from the first time I did it here, I'm not gonna put this finger down. I'm going to leave him up because you're gonna see I'm gonna need him in just a minute. Some. I'm gonna be playing the third friends of the first and second strings, and I'm gonna be playing 1215 Now, did you catch that? On the 2nd 1? This finger hops into the second fret of the first string. So and that ring finger, he had the lift Get out way. Uh huh. So, to five. And then I jump into what looks almost like a d seven shape. Second Fred of the third string and first fret of the second string. And I'm just gonna do a reverse. 1231 I was called out of reverse because your fingers are moving in the reverse order than a forward. They're going middle in next thumb. So with that whole measure and you're gonna end on the one on, then I'm going to slide from one into three on the second string, and then I'm gonna play 5 to 15 to one to finish it up now from there. Why not use to slide from one? Well, because my fingers already there mention it sounds great, too, but I'm kind of a big fan of efficient fingering, so anything I can do to cut down on my emotions and my movements, that's what I'm to take advantage of. Especially if it makes it sound better. 25215 to 1. All right, so let's play through that second variation Really slow one more time. Okay, so that's the entirety of the arrangement. But let me give you some performance tips, things that maybe necessarily the tab doesn't indicate unless you really pay attention and listen to the song. So first thing first, on that second variation, you're going to hear me. I really like to emphasize that that pinch or that pluck rather on even there you're gonna hear me emphasize that first string eso you're here a lot of kind of first string emphasis expensive. That's where the melodies at here on this note This line I really want to bring that out and put some punch into that thing and really make it sound nice. And strong, See? Okay, So going back into some other things that you can do is we don't want this song to just all be just the land in the same level because people don't speak like that. So we don't want to play like that either. So one thing I would tell you is you don't want to come out too loud, like you don't want toe come out really loud like that. You don't have anywhere to go, So you might want to make it a little bit more of a moody type piece where you could start softer, Louder. Now, this stuff is subject. If you could take everything I just said and turned around backwards and try it for yourself and it might just sound just as good. So my whole point, though, is experiment with the tomb. Um, the point of is not to just memorize the arrangement is also to learn the melody and then expand on it and also be able to play very expressively. So if I'm playing this for real, you know, I might think there it almost seems like I'm kind of slowing down, Even though I'm not on the volume level. You could hear it 16. FarewellBlues: way the oh, So that was the farewell blues. And today's lessons. I'm gonna teach you how to do just that. All right? This song is in the key of C on. A lot of people retuned down the four string, but this requires no tuning. Hey, the old banjo won't stand tune as it is, so let's minimize the retuning. Okay, so let's get started. It's 21 open counting from the first string up and we're gonna have some pick up notes and the way this is gonna work, we're gonna hit the third string open On the second fret of the third string noticed that these fingers are not moving. They're staying down on the first fret of the second string. Eso double summing on the pointer finger with your right hand. Now, that point I'm gonna slide from 3 to 5 on the second string. OK on then as soon as I get to five, my rent thing is gonna drop into the fifth fret of the first string. Some people make the mistake in making it to fetch. You want it to be 12 and then the old forward roll 5215 So from the top way So that's 51 But now that point these fingers are staying put. I'm just gonna slide back a friend and I'm gonna pluck a pitch Those with the first and second string at the same time with these two fingers on and then five and then moving back of Fret five again. These are just quarter notes on four on into a partial See here pinching one and two again . 53 Now, when I get to three on that role Dr Teoh on to I'm gonna jump into the third string. Second fret five. At that point, I'm gonna play four Roll staying where I'm at 2552 Let's go to the hole. A section again thing 51231 That last measure is 1/4 note on the second string. 551 more time. Thursby section is pretty unique. But before we get to the B section, understand? At the A section repeats twice and then the bees only gonna play once, and then you go back to the A. It's kind of a weird form. Okay, so let's get into this B section on Fair World Blues. So we're gonna grab a cord, right? And you're going to play a forward reverse role. 32151231 on. Then I use my pinky. You can use your ring finger. I'm gonna hop into the fourth fret of the third string into the same old Ford reverse we owe. All right now, here's where the rhythm got a little tricky. I grabbed the d chord here for 32 and I play three and then I a pinch wanted to again. You hear that rhythm? Hopefully its three and And in the pinch, do that twice. Three. Bench three. What did I do? I took the d A professor otherwise known as e flat. So we have from the way, all right, and then back to the ice section. But we're gonna leave out to pick up. So here, the way we have to go back to the A section because going to the B section again. I don't want it in their doesn't sound so So we have to get back to see and the way we do that way. Final first time through the apes, The salt. Okay, so a a b a. Now there's another variation on the tune where people play off of the seventh Court, and that's the next part that I want to get into today. It's very similar to what you just learned. So then at this point, you're going to go up to the eighth fret the first string and a friend of the second string Boy, was that awful sound, right? Let's not do that again. So a friend of the first string and then a friend of the second string and using the same fingers, right? And at that point, what you're going to do is you're gonna play to burn quarter notes one and and then 5 to 15 Keep returning to the 52155215 Once again, thing hit 15 backing up a fret one things time We're not gonna play the chords. We're gonna play a single note, so starting here again. Seventh fret five. So from the beginning of the next variation thing. We're gonna drop into the fifth fret and we're gonna play 15 to 15 to. So here we go again. I think now, at this point, I have this little position that I love to use them and lift up my ring finger and the pointer finger is gonna drop into the fifth fret of the third strength. And I'm just gonna do a Ford reverse role way. Use the whole thing. Beat two aces, and now we're gonna go into a B part. But this people have created is a little bit different than the other one. I want you to have some interesting things to play with. So grab in a chord here. 756 counting from the first drink up and kind of what I did. This is a kind of a quoting a little bit of Don Reno here. And what I've does have taken the car and I've lifted up this finger. So the second string is open on. Get this kind of interesting sound here. Now, what I did is I took this and then this finger is gonna pop into here to emphasize the seventh every other one and My role is just the old basic. 3 to 432132 one. Okay away. Right. Let's just do the right hand parents. So it's 3 to 13 to 13 to 13 to 15 bum. All right, now what is hard about this, though, is this finger has to come in every other like that. So here it is, this thing coming in. 3213 to 1. You'd slow Theo faster, though. Now, from that point, with that second string ringing that creates this really nice tension there, we're gonna drop into a D seven. Now. A lot of people don't know this particular D seven. So I want to go over this seventh fret of the first string seven friend of the second string with your ring. So it's pinky and ring and then fits. Friend of the third string with your pointer finger and back to my little pinches that I did remember. This is the same exact thing. I'm just playing a different court. So three on notice that I'm kind of dampening, and after taking my fingers off a little bit and then you're gonna move up to the E flat seven. Okay, so let's start all the way back from the new variations because I want you to catch this thing way. Did you catch that? So the last time you actually have to go back to the first variation that we learned after this stuff I don't want to hear. And the reason being is because once again, we wanted to sound resolved. And that c seven, we want a pure, just basic C major. So after this, back to your first creation, that is the completion of farewell blues. Take care. 17. Salt-Creek-2: Okay, so this is the B section to Salt Creek. Hope you guys have been doing great out there. That what is getting beautiful here. So we're gonna go to the eighth fret of the second string, and my right hand is simply to 5 to 15 to one. And that's the only note this down. By the way, your first drink is gonna be open from there. Your ring finger hops into the first string. You're gonna go 5 to 15 and then you go to what I call a reverse diagonal Seventh for the first string eight. Front of the second string nine. Threat of the third string on the right hand is simply going 123 So from the top, last note is the first string open. So the first measure, the's great thing about this song, won. The reason I love the teacher is you simply just take everything you just did and move it down. Two frets. So from here, 65 the second string finger hops into the seventh round of the first string on and then back to reverse diagonal. So I'll do that again. So you're on the six friend of the second string to 5 to 151 finger hops into the seventh threat. Here. Put those two managers together. Way you go. Right back up to the G and do it again from there. Keep your middle finger on the second straight. Just glide him up to the third front of the second string and they're gonna hop into the second fret of the first ring here and go 555 month pot. And then the ring finger's gonna hop into the third fret of the first ring, and you're gonna play 1 to 15 with your right hand. So that manager is hoppin on five. But on that last one, the ring finger comes off and you can see this in the tab. I'll do this a couple times. 5 to 151 to one. Okay, now, from there, hop over to the second fret of the third string and do a reverse role on 23 months. So those two measures the weather here. It's changing. So there's gonna be a little theme and that's where I want O start with is basically gonna slide from 4 to 5 on the fourth string. But your role pattern is it's going to be 4315 315 And then you're gonna hit the third string with your pointer finger on and in a pinch s So here is the phrase again eyes as you're sliding. We're gonna get that third string immediately. Remember that phrase now, your Cripple Creek slide. You know that if you don't, it's your sliding from 2 to 4 on the third string in going 3 to 51 So we put those phrases together, just one cripple Creek side and they're gonna come to the first fret of the second string. Hit that with your pointer finger down here on a pinch. It sounds like this on and come to an F court, but you're gonna be pulling off from the second fret open on the third string holding this court down. And the role pattern is 32 or one. And as you pull off that second string open at the same time on 41 that's still alternating several three times after that four string open. So here's the thing so far ready. Go back to the team back to the top way, that phrase. But now you're not gonna go to those f You gotta come over and I'm gonna zoom in. Hopefully here. Second front of the first string. Third fret of the second string. So those two fingers down like that and the role pattern is now 5 to 1. Just a forward roll, Theo. Ring finger comes over to the third fret of the first string and you're gonna go 1215 down here. But what's gonna have to happen is as you're doing this 1215 pattern, you go back to the second friend of the for a string. So your fingers like this, they come in and it comes back up. So this is five to I finger comes down, one to figure comes up. I know that's a lot of stuff involved, but I'll do this slowly on. Finally, Finger comes to the second friend of the third string. Just a point thing or the ring finger, and you're gonna go on a reverse role. So I'll do that last phrase. So here's the whole thing. Soothe. Thats the a section.
