    Welcome to my class here on Skillshare, "Become an Amazon Kindle eBook Publisher", where I will teach you just that.

    Amazon has over 600 million credit cards on file. That's a lot of credit cards. So the buying audience is so abundant it's not even funny. You know how it works with your Apple ID when buying apps. 2.99$ for this watermelon slicing game? BUY.

    Apps cost thousands of dollars and hours to produce though. An eBook on the Amazon can sell for at least just as much as an iPhone app - but it can be produced at a fraction of the price. This is why Kindle eBook publishing is THE simplest and the most replicable online income opportunity out there.

    Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) is by far the simplest and fastest way to establish a side income online. I have tried other ways and failed. This process is simple but it still requires a lot of work. If you follow the steps I provide you can easily have a portfolio of eBooks pay your utilities or food bill.

    It's fully scalable so there's nothing holding you back from taking it as far as you like. More books, more money.

    But of course you have to provide quality content. You cannot just whip a few essays from middle school together and make a wad of cash on that.

    In the following steps I will teach you how to hire people to write books for you so the only thing you will have to do is make sure the book is about a topic people are willing to pay for, and that the book is branded and presented in the right way.

    All of these things I will teach you.

    The Amazon Kindle Store is so vast and abundant that you can sell plenty of Kindle eBooks by only concentrating on one section or category. So even though the Best Sellers list is mainly populated by fiction books there's still plenty of sales to be made with non-fiction eBooks. The reason why we will focus on non-fiction books is that the process of writing them is replicable and it doesn't require the creative genius of Tolkien or Rowling. 

    In the nonfiction section you'll see how it branches out into several other genres, which branch out to even more genres. Picking a smaller niche to rank in makes it easier to appear higher in your section, but obviously the smaller the niche, the smaller the audience.

    You will quickly learn to pick out which books are your competitors and which aren't. You are not competing with established authors making a full time living out of their books, and pricing them at 15.99$ - at least not at this point.

    The new Malcolm Gladwell book is a good example of this:

    First of all his book is 320 pages. You are not going to be writing a 320 page book. His book is at the time of writing ranked #94 in the overall Kindle Store. Using the extremely useful KDP Sales Rank Calculator tool we will learn that Mr. Gladwell is selling somewhere between 300 and 550 books a day. Now if he was enrolled in the KDP program like you will be, pricing his book at 7.99$ at a 70% royalty he would be making between 2,397 and 3,999$ a day!

    Now Malcolm Gladwell is an established author and has his books released in many different stores, so he would not be receiving a 70% commission like you will be receiving – if you price your books correctly.

    Amazon’s KDP Select program pays you either 35% or 70% depending on how much you charge for your book. They have found out that the price bracket 2.99$-9.99$ is the sweet spot for selling a bunch of books. So obviously they want to give you an incentive to pricing your books within this bracket. You want to sell a bunch of books, right?

    Another thing that points out that this book is not your competition is the number of reviews. 390 reviews is a lot. None of my books have more than ten reviews and they’re still selling quite nicely.

    To find books that you are going to be competing with we are going to have to niche further into the Kindle jungle and look at smaller categories and find books written by other KDP authors.

    Usually KDP authors are a bit apprehensive about showing their books, as they are often using pen names and don’t want to reveal their ways of picking profitable topics. But I am going to put my “empire” at risk and use one of my own examples of what you will be going up against.

    This book is ranked in #50 in Kindle Store > Kindle eBooks > Health, Fitness & Dieting > Disorders & Diseases > Diabetes. So as you can see it’s quite far down the branches, which is why I’ve been able to rank so well.

    Now, I did not write one word of this book. I didn’t design the cover either. The only thing I did was peruse the smaller categories for a top selling book I could mimic.

    In this case I was looking around the Diabetes category, as one does, and found a book on the hormone Leptin. I did a site wide search for “Leptin” to gauge who I would be going up against were I to try to rank for this topic:

    As you can see I’m ranking #1 for this topic right now, beating professional authors. I’m not showing you this to impress you, but to impress upon you how everyone can do this. I flunked biology in high school and know nothing about this topic, but a medical student in Pakistan did.

    Looking at my book it’s currently ranked #52,729 in the overall paid category. According to the sales calculator tool that means it’s selling about one copy a day. It’s currently selling 1-3 copies a day, so the tool is not totally correct but it’s a good way of gauging how much you could be selling if you were to beat the competition.

    Another thing to take note of is the search only yields 23 results. I usually only go after a topic if I think I can rank within top 16, since that is number of results showing up on page one.

    So generally try to mimic books within the top 50.000 and with less than 15 competitors, or at least weak competitors.

    Other top books ranking for “leptin” are actually selling more books than I am, the one just below my book is at #28,274 but Amazon’s ranking algorithms figured my book was more relevant to this particular search. There really is no way to figure out exactly how Amazon conducts their ranking, so I won’t get further into this.

    Actually this search does not yield very many results, and the results it does give are doing well. So you could actually have a book written on the exact same topic and have a book selling consistently into the future. To be totally candid this one book cost me 120$ to get written and the book cover cost 5$ (yes, five dollars) and it made itself back in a couple of weeks. This was even before I knew I could get away with paying as little as 25$ for getting a book written - more on this later.

    A thing that’s so great about KDP publishing as a source of passive income is that you can kill two birds with one stone; if there’s a topic you’re interested in, instead of reading books and blogs on the topic, see if there’s a viable market for it, and have a book written on it.

    This makes the whole process a lot more fun and ensures you will stay consistent with it. This is where all other possible sources of online income failed with me – it just was not fun in the long run.

    This is exactly what I did with the leptin book; I had read about this topic and wanted to learn more about it. I did a search on Amazon and saw there was only half a dozen books using that exact keyword in the title and went after it.

Getting Your Book Written

  1. Find And Hire A Freelancer To Write Your Book

    Now we’re getting to the nitty gritty. This is where I felt A LOT of other paid guides I used did a really sloppy job. I felt really confused when starting out with the outsourcing process itself. None of the products gave me the step-by-step process I needed. For me this was hard to comprehend, so please do contact me if you feel there is any step I should explain further.

    There are a host of different places online to get your eBook written. Most people use either Elance.com or Odesk.com, I have also used iWriter.com but I now use Elance as it is just better in every way, and the amount of freelancers is so much bigger.

    (Later sidenote: I now only use EpicWrite.com which is ten times easier to use, since they have vetted writers in their staff. You do not read to check any portfolios or follow along in the process, since it’s just great every time.

    If you go with the premium solution you do not even need to proofread - it’s that good. The price is also way lower compared to writers of that caliber on freelance portals. So try out EpicWrite. I’m leaving the section with Elance as is though, as it still provides a lot of great advice on using freelancers, which can also be applied to sites like EpicWrite.)

    Elance uses an escrow system and you pay with Paypal, so the platform is extremely safe. I have used it quite a lot and have not had any freelancer try to cheat me. Though I have had freelancers supplying me with terrible material that I just refused to pay for, and withheld my escrow. As long as you are honest and tell people exactly what you want, you will have success with outsourcing the writing process.

    I am going to use a project I’m currently doing as an example of how to use Elance.

    I followed the steps I went through before in picking a viable topic. I chose a topic I was interested in to make things a bit more fun as well. I chose to have a recipe book written about fermented vegetables. Yes, fermented vegetables. There’s really no limit to how niche you can go – the market is so abundant that there’s room for a nearly an infinite amount of topics.

    In the beginning I would pay freelancers upwards of 120$ per book. This is not necessary. Many freelancers are from areas where 120$ is all the money in the world. With that in mind you have to gauge their language skills above anything else – language goes over content in this case.

    The content has to be good too of course. Which is why you have to read through the portfolio of the freelancer you are screening. If you see as much as one spelling mistake, let the freelancer go. There are so many freelancers out there, so you do not have to compromise on any field.

    When I started out I thought this whole thing sounded strange; how can you pay random people to write content people will pay for? But it is quite possible.

    The aforementioned eBook on leptin was written by a Pakistani medical student and her English was better than mine. In today’s day and age there’s Indians living in shanty towns who, because of the Internet, are a lot smarter than you and me. Today’s availability of knowledge has caused English to be spoken fluently all over the world and made experts of people who didn’t even pass high school. Heck, growing up in Denmark, I didn’t speak English until my mid-teens but I learned through videogames and the Internet.

    This doesn’t mean that you can have any Bangladeshi write your book; there are way more bad writers out there than there are good ones, and it’s going to take a few tries to find the good ones. Which is why you should start out with low stakes, writing short and inexpensive books, but still providing quality content.

    So let’s look at getting started with Elance.

    Setting up your account is easy and once you’re done, you can post your first job right away.

    As you can see my job description is very simple, but you should always err on the side of being too specific.

    In the beginning when I would post jobs, I would never post a price point, even though I had already decided I would not pay over X amount of dollars. I would get dozens of silly applications from people demanding several hundreds of dollars for writing a 15-recipe cookbook.

    Do yourself a favour and set a price point. 25-50$ is fine when starting out. You should start out with small projects of 20-30 pages until you feel comfortable enough for bigger projects.

    Select all the same parameters as I have. The “Fixed price” bracket is the most important one. The "hourly wage" section is just too much of a hassle, unless you want to sit and monitor your freelancer's desktop 24/7.

    Elance is going to try to upsell on all sorts of exposure deals. There’s no need for any of this – you will get plenty of proposals without.

    I’m going to give another example of a job posting to make sure you understand the principles fully.

    I later learned to go through the reviews of my competition on the Kindle Store, and find the top five things the reviewers had thought was good about the book, and the top five things the reviewers did not like. I then made sure the freelancer included the positive aspects and excluded the negative ones.

    A quick look into the table of contents of your competing books is a great help as well when thinking of sections you want to include. Just click on the book cover on its Amazon page and have a look for free:

    Once you’ve posted your job you will start getting proposals fairly quickly. I usually wait a day or two before making up my mind which freelancer to assign.

    Warning signs:

    -       No previous experience

    -       Copy/pasted proposals

    -       Grammar or spelling errors

    -       Ridiculous pricing

    You don’t want to use a freelancer who has done less than three jobs, at least when starting out. We’ll let the more experienced users try out the new freelancers.

    You don’t want freelancers who didn’t even see it fit spending 60 seconds on crafting a good proposal, and just sent a proposal that wasn’t tailored at all to your job offering.

    As soon as you see any spelling or language mistakes, run. This goes for their proposal, profile and portfolio. These are writers – it’s their job to be spelling wizards. If they don't take their profile or portfolio seriously, they sure won't take your job seriously either.

    And of course don’t go for a freelancer demanding a silly price.

    When you see an attractive proposal read his or her work examples or portfolio. When you’ve gone through a couple you learn to go through this entire process quite quickly. I like to choose freelancers who have relevant experience. For example with my fermentation cookbook I went with a freelancer who supplied me with other recipe eBooks she had written. 

    When you’ve picked your freelancer of choice Elance asks you to fund the escrow. The freelancer won’t get the fee until you’ve accepted the product and released the escrow.

    How long it takes for the job to get done depends on the size, but most short eBooks take five days to a week.

    In the mean time I go to fiverr.com and get a cover designed for five dollars. This site can get addicting. It’s amazing what you can get done for five bucks in there – quality stuff too. More on this later.

    Now we have to find a name our book.

Naming Your Book

  1. Coming Up With An Effective Name For Your Book

    Before you start getting your book cover designed, you want to come up with a name for it. This is the point where we’re going to have to learn a bit of search engine optimization – SEO for short. It’s pretty simple.

    Obviously you want your book to show up when people search for your topic on Google, Yahoo or Amazon. Therefore coming up with a clever and catchy name, but unrelated to the topic, is not desirable. It might work if you’re an author who doesn’t have to rely on Google searches.

    Take the aforementioned Malcolm Gladwell book “David & Goliath” – I have no clue what this book is about, but I know it’s going to be good, because I know his name and have read his other books and they're awesome. This is not the case with you and me.

    Us mortals must rely on search optimized titles like "Conquer Leptin Resistance: How To Get Rid Of Cravings, Fix Your Hormones, Get More Energy And Lose Weight". Doesn’t sound or look very good, but it is keyword relevant and therefore shows up in the searches.

    So I did not choose this long silly name at random.

    To further explain how to pick a title and sub-title for your book, and I’m going to show a very important tool: Google Keyword Planner.

    You will need a Google Adwords account, which will take two minutes to set up. Go to the Keyword Planner and choose “Search for new keyword and ad group ideas”. This is where you will have to put yourself in your customers’ shoes.

    What words or sentences would the customers who are the most likely of buying your book search for?

    In my case I went with “leptin” – simple. The Keyword Planner then shows you related keywords and ranks them how you want them. Pick the ones with most monthly searches but still are relevant to your keyword.

    Here you can see how many people are searching for your keyword each month, and the words closest topically related to your keyword. In this case you want to go with your gut feeling over what the numbers tell you.

    Neither “energy”, “cravings” or “hormones” showed up in the results but I guessed that my potential customers searching for those words would be more inclined to buy, than people searching for, say, “gluten free diet” which showed up in the top results.

    So let’s look at the fermented vegetable recipe book I’m putting together right now.

    The main title is "Quick And Easy Vegetable Fermentation" and the sub-title is "Healthy Pickled And Fermented Foods Recipes". All these keywords are search optimized and will hopefully lead as many fermentation crazed customers to my Amazon page.

Getting A Book Cover Made

  1. Find And Hire A Designer On Fiverr.com

    Now you’re ready to pick your designer at Fiverr.

    Do a search for “Kindle” and behold the plethora of eBook cover designers offering quality work. Remember to sort by highest rating.

    Once you’ve found a designer you like, stick with him or her. I use the same guy now over and over, and it just makes the process quicker and more seamless.

    To make this as easy as possible just find any book cover you want to mimic and send them an example of this. I prefer to mimic book covers from books in a completely different category to mine, so I don’t get accused of plagiarism. It’s important you tell the designer EXACTLY what you want though; don’t make him have to guess at any point.

    In my first book I spent almost $20 on a stock photo. You don’t need to do this.

    Go to http://search.creativecommons.org and make sure the brackets “use for commercial purposes” and “modify, adapt, or build upon” are ticked. I search on Google Images and Flickr and find photos I’m free to use for commercial use.

    Find a bunch of photos you like and figure out which one to go with. This is also where I go if I need photos to put inside my book. Be careful though not to put too many photos in your book. Amazon bills you for transferring the data, not a lot, but still; you don’t want too big a book file.

    Once you’ve given your designer instructions it will usually take a little less than a week for them to complete it. If the designer is a good sport he or she will supply you with a few different interpretations on your instructions. You can say you’re not satisfied with the result and they will usually do a reiteration, but this is usually only necessary in the beginning before you get used to supplying enough detailed information.

Putting Together Your Book

  1. Formatting Your Book

    When you’ve received the final product and decided you’re happy with it, you can start formatting it. This can be done in programs like Pages or Microsoft Word. I use Word for Mac.

    Of course I can't cover all the exact steps for every text editor out there, so it goes without saying that if something does not apply to your program of choice, a simple Google search will surely give you an applicable answer.

    You shouldn’t worry too much about the font or size of the text. The reader chooses his or her style when reading your book, so it doesn’t matter whether you go with Times New Roman or Arial. Choose whatever pleases your eyes the most.

    If you want you can insert your own personal touches on the book. I like to insert some relevant photos if I can find some for free on Creative Commons. I also put an “About the Author” section in the end where I promote my other books.

    You want to make sure that:

    -       Each chapter starts on a new page using the “Page break” function and not just pressing enter until the text appears on the next page.

    -       You are consistent with your styles. Keep your body text one size, and headers another. Aesthetically this goes without saying.

    -       All outgoing links in your books are sending the reader to the right places.

    -       All links sending the reader to other sections of the book are working properly as well. Do this when you’re done with everything.

    When you think the book is good to go you can start setting up your table of contents. Don’t put in any page numbers or anything in there, as the page number of the chosen section will depend on the size and font the reader choses. Links to the different chapters is all you need.

    This is easily done:

    First you create a headliner titled “Table Of Content”, highlight and press “Bookmark” from the “Insert” tab. Give it the name “TOC” – this is only so Amazon recognizes it as the table of content.

    Next you’re going to highlight each chapter and press “Bookmark” and name it. If you’re using Word for Mac you want to exclude spaces and just write the name without.

    When you’ve put bookmarks on all your chapter headers, you can start writing your table of contents. Write each chapter in the desired size under the table of contents header. Highlight each chapter and press Insert->Hyperlink->Document->Locate-> and pick the bookmark which you want to link.

    When you've made sure there's typos, dead links or any other screw-ups you're ready to upload your book.

Publishing Your Book

  1. Upload And Publish Your Book On The Amazon Kindle Store

    When you’ve received your book cover you’re all set to upload your book to Amazon.

    When uploading your book you need to pick 7 keywords you want to Amazon to list your book under. Go back to Keyword Planner and pick the ones you think will be most relevant to your target demographic, but also have a high monthly search rate. I go for at least 20.000 monthly searches.

    You will also have to pick two categories for your book. It’s hard to quantify which genre is the best to list your book under. A lot of KDP authors like to pick one broad genre, and then one more niche genre. They do this to cast the widest net possible by targeting a mainstream market as well as a niche market.

    This is also where you will pick the author and publisher of the book. This isn’t very important and just depends on whether you want to use a pen name or your own name.

    I use my own name for books I’ve written myself and a pen name for the books I’ve hired writers to write.

    The next thing you will have to do is pick a price. As I mentioned earlier Amazon gives you a different commission depending on how you choose to price your eBook. They’ve found out that buyers are most inclined to buy books priced between 2.99$ and 9.99$. To encourage you to price your books between these price points, they’re paying a 70% royalty instead of a 35% royalty. This a very high royalty rate compared to the real publishing business.

    So what should you price your book at? Before you have used your KDP free promotion days I wouldn’t expect much sales regardless of what you price your book at. Free promotion? Yes, Amazon allows you to give away your book for free for five days every three months.

    This might seem counterintuitive but giving your book away for free is the best way to gain momentum. It will boost your book in the rankings and hopefully drive some reviews to it as well. 

Promoting Your Book and Ending Notes

  1. Promote Your Book To Drive Sales

    A week before your planned promotion you should start letting people know your book is going to be free on such and such days. I have attached my full list of promotion sites in the resources section. Listing your book on these sites is a great tool for boosting your free downloads and eventually your sales.

    You can use social media like Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest to promote your eBook using trending hashtags. This is something I will be spending more time on leveraging in the future. Keep an eye on the trending hashtags on Twitter and Instagram and promote your eBooks if you can find relevant trends. But please don’t be spammy about this. Yes, you will get traffic but none of it will convert into sales and you will have wasted your time and look like a tool. Stay relevant and provide value to your consumer always.

    Another great way to get momentum for new books is to trade reviews with other authors. Even though this sounds sketchy it is not. In fact, Amazon recommends it. Just remember to write relevant and honest reviews for your “colleagues” and not just copy/paste other reviews. Amazon’s all-seeing eye will see this and penalize you.

    Refer to the resources section for places to get in contact with other Kindle authors.

    Another tip: If you have the same house address as your mother don’t buy your book with her account and try to write reviews from her account (Yes, I live at home, don’t hate!), Amazon sees this too!

    Refer to the resources section for a comprehensive list of tools to get your books out there and getting the sales flowing. 

  2. Ending Notes

    So I've given you all the steps you need to establish a passive source of income using the Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing platform. I've omitted many things as not to overwhelm you.

    When I started out I would get caught up in reading all these articles and watching all these videos on aspects I was not ready for at all, when I should be focusing on just releasing my first couple of books. This is a very common form of procrastination and can lead to paralysis by analysis.

    That being said there's a wealth of great content out there, and I will link to the sources I have found the most useful, but I want to wait with delving into this until after you've released at least one ebook.

    The information will just make you second guess your strategy and sometimes lead you to not doing it at all. Or you will have to read it again when you've actually internalized the more basic information I have provided in this course.

  1. How to Obtain an EIN (TIN)

    So you've released your first book and you've noticed on your KDP account page, that Amazon is withholding 30% of your royalties. Before you supply them with an elligible EIN number they will keep on doing this. Once you have your EIN you will receive full royalties and be able to pay taxes in your own country.

    This whole process take little effort bat a LONG time. It involves a lot of waiting and being on hold.

    Go to this IRS page:
    http://www.irs.gov/Businesses/Small-Businesses-&-Self-Employed/How-to-Apply-for-an-EIN

    Jot down the numbers 267-941-1099, remember the country code +1 (001) for US.

    Skim through the SS-4 form and have all your information ready for the IRS interview. You won't have to file it in, but just fill it out so you're ready for the questions:

    Go to Skype.com and get some credits, because you're going to be on hold for at least an hour, and you don't want that on your phone bill.

    Call 267-941-1099 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) Monday through Friday.

    Once you're through your interviewer will ask you a bunch of simple questions and everything's very official and repeated dozens of times - so don't be intimidated by that. Just tell him you're applying for an EIN for ebook publishing and answer his questions.

    When you're done you get your EIN - write it down a few places, because you won't get it by mail before another three weeks.

    Then you go to your KDP account and fill out your tax information. It's all pretty simple. The only tripping point is forgetting to tick "I received my TIN in the last 60 days". I forgot this and it drove me crazy why I couldn't get through.

    It might rejects you, in which case you just try again a few days later. If you get through in the first go though, it will say "pending by the IRS" for another 2-3 weeks before you're accepted.

    Just remember to use the EXACT same information everywhere. Especially you people with several middle and surnames. Use the same info otherwise you will get rejected.

    And after, in my case 6 weeks, you will get approved and you will receive your full cut.

  2. Put your book on Createspace

    Createspace.com is a company owned by Amazon that offer print versions of your books for people to order. It doesn’t cost anything other than the commission they take. The only reason I signed up for this was actually to get the $9.99 print price to show above my Kindle price, for a psychological buyer’s boost – or whatever you want to call it.

    I had not anticipated to be selling any print versions at all though; I just wanted the stricken out $9.99 price above my Kindle price to incite buyers. But creating my books in there actually made me an extra $110 in two-three weeks. Tangible.

    It’s very simple to set up. You just have to play around with the different formats and make sure it fits your book’s format. Just start with 8,5'' x 11'' and see if your book looks good in the previewer. If not, try different formats.
