About This Class

A pretty pair of tiny flowers for you to make and take inspiration from!

831f2301

The Tiny Flower stud earrings start as simple discs of silver, and the videos will teach you how to make and solder tiny balls of silver into the the middle and add stud fitting to the back of the discs. Following the class will help you learn new ways of using small pieces of silver and how to solder delicate designs.

This is one of a series of video classes, each one showing you how to quickly and easily make a lovely pair of earrings - sometimes two pairs! In each video I will show you the materials you will need, explain the tools and equipment and go through all the steps needed to create your own lovely pair of earrings. Along the way I will share with you the same hints and tips that I teach in my jewelry making classes and private tuition so that you become more confident with your techniques and design skills with each class that you watch.

This class is for jewellery makers of all levels of experience from complete beginners upwards.

The equipment needed for the project is explained in the videos and also listed on a downloadable document that covers all of the tools that I will use in future earrings video classes as well so you can plan ahead! All the equipment listed can be used for a variety of other jewellery making projects.

1. Tiny Flower Stud Earrings - introduction: my name's during Tingly on and I'm Jewelry Design that shooter from the South First UK Welcome to the next video in my Siris on making beautiful jewelry from scrap silver. In this video, I'm going to show you how to make a beautiful but very quick her hearings. It was a little silver on a few pieces of equipment news as usual, I'll be taking you through everything step by step Onda, attached to the class materials is a list of all the equipment that he would need for a love. This Siri's off video boxes So clicking role to get started I show you how easy it is to 2. Tiny Flower Stud Earrings - materials: you don't see very many materials to make these hearings at all. I've got your pizza sheet that has actually really got four holes cut out of it that we used to make the doughnuts stud earrings that are in another jewelry class. This piece of sheet is about no 0.7 millimeter steak. Andi. For this project, you can use anything for no 0.5 millimeters to north 0.7 millimeters thick. That's vouched. 21 gauge 24 gauge thick sheet. I've also got a pair of study fittings to soldier on the back Onda a pair of butterflies to slip on the back of the sudden fittings to hold him in your ears on that, all the materials you need. 3. Tiny Flower Stud Earrings - equipment: if you have enrolled on any of my other jury making video classes, you have seen most of these pieces of equipment already. I tried to keep the equipment for this project down to a minimum. Onda. As always, the equipment you can see here could be used for many other jewelry projects as well. The discussion, er, what's he going to use to cut two discs that are going to form the basis for the pair of earrings? Andi. The discussion is going to be used with the old heavy hammer that you see here a smaller, lighter hammer. It's the one that I'm going to use to texture the disks on DWhite else. I'm hammering thumb. I'm going to support them on the steel block and cushion that with a leather cushion. So doesn't make too much noise because the discs are so small, I'm going to take them down with the magic Scotch tape that you can see in the middle. I really like to use this type of tape in my work rather than masking tape, because I can see through it. It's easy to tear, and it doesn't leave any sticky residue behind. I'm going to cup the discs that how much discs in the domain block? Andi, I'm going to use wooden punches to do that. Musing wouldn punches rather metal ones as the metal ones would hammer out and flatten out the texture that I just taking the time to hammer into silver. 4. Tiny Flower Stud Earrings - soldering equipment: this'll is the soldier equipment that I use for all of my smaller projects, such as earrings and sore pendants, Everything sitting on a couple of slate tiles, a heatproof surface to help protect my desk on my work sits on a couple of soldering bricks , soldering blocks while some heating it up. One of these soldering bricks is made of a softer material than the others. Because it's softer, it's picked up some dips and some cracks in it. It's being used over the years, and these could be very useful for supporting work that isn't completely flat. The charcoal block is there because I melt small piece of scrap on top of that on. Do they form nice of my balls as I am used to decorate my projects when I need to pick up my work or to support it whilst I'm soldering? I used reverse action tweezers that you can see here and have also got a pair on a stand through 1/3 hand, and it's there when I need 12 on extra hands to help me out. The blue handled stick is a soldier pick on and that I used to push soldier move it about to make sure it it's exactly what I wanted to be. Soldier usually comes in strips or sticks. Andi, I've got three different melting temperatures here that I using combination for different projects. The soldier gets cut into small pieces or Palin's you ting. The red handles snips as I keep those little pieces in the labeled boxes that you can see do. Make sure that you label your boxes because once a soldier is cut up, you won't be hard to tell which is which. Melting temperature. My curl over the ends off the sticks of solder so that I can tell which melting temperature they are, the more cold over they are, they're higher. The mountain temperature, bright yellow liquid is a flux. Solder won't actually flow out through the joining unless you use a flux with it. Andi, the paintbrushes. What I used to apply the flux to the joints in my work. Small projects like hearings only need a small blowtorch, and I've got two different makes of those here. Both of them are easy to refill with the gas that comes in aerosol cans since the same type of gas, butane gas that you use to reform cigarette lighter At the back of the picture, you can see a so cooker that Scots a very mild acid solution. Good safety pickle in it. When you heat silver up, the surface becomes not darker and dirtier looking that some of the capo in the study silver reacting with the heat and auction flame to forward cause copper oxides on the safety pickle cleans it a couple oxides up before you put your work in the safety pickle, it needs to be cooled down or quenched in a pot of water. Andi, you need to put your work in and out of the safety pickle with brass or plastic tweezers. Not the stainless steel ones that I showed you before and last, but definitely not least our home safety glasses. You've only got one pair of eyes. Look after them carefully. 5. Tiny Flower Stud Earrings - cutting the discs: Theo First stage of making the earrings is to cut out discs. Onda freely chosen which size of disk I want to use as you can see from the disk, has really been cut out of this piece of sheet. My discussed er cut nice and tight up against the edge of available wasted. Actually those little pieces, the scraps there were going to be using later on in the project. So for my disk attar a sheet goes in between the two halfs gets sandwiched in between Andi . I move the sheet so that the edges the sheet are just out of sight down the hole, but the discovering right way around you definitely don't want to get the cutting edge on, and one just cut out to dis ready for the next stage on Bond. As you can see again, Rachel scrap leftover, making much use of this piece of sheet as I possibly can 6. Tiny Flower Stud Earrings - hammering the discs: I want my disks to have a little bit of a hammer. Techs just add a little bit of extra into interests, helping catch the light a little bit. So I'm going to hammer them on top of the steel block with this hammer that is going to put a little dim pours into the silver. But these are very small pieces of sheet. I could hold it with my finger and do little bits for a time, but I'm going to show you another trick that is a little bit kinder on your fingers. We're going to take this a bit of magic Scotch tape and then fold it back on itself. Former leap sick that onto the book and sick the disk on top of it. And now I should be out a hammer it without it moving about Every now and again. It does slip off, but it's still not kind of your fingers in trying to hold it with your fingers when you're hammering. - That's the first disc. How much See that there is a slight difference in shape, Um, because I've made sure that I hammered around the edges. The disc Teoh as a little bit of extra interest, and that's actually changes the shape of the disc ever so slightly. That's when it starts to slip on the tape a little bit. I used to hold it down, but that stage is shaping or dome ing disks. 7. Tiny Flower Stud Earrings - doming the discs: way using the domain block to shape or dough Metis. There were two things that you will need to be aware. The 1st 1 is that you don't want to start off your disk in quite a small dish. That means that you are putting quite a deep impression in straight away, because then you can increase the desk. If you're not careful, you want to do a little bit of time to start off in a dish that gives a shallower impression than you are actually aiming for and then go sue progressively de part and smaller dishes. The second thing is that you want to make sure that you use the right size punch. You don't want to use a punch that when you hit it, its edges will hit the edge of the dish because that will market. Andi could potentially ruin it for future work, so I'm going to start off the day here, make sure it's sitting centrally in the hole. You we'll see that started to shape it the same with the other ones, so they much and then we want to smaller. How that last bit of hammering I changed to a smaller wooden punch so that the edges wouldn't get hit by the H is the dish. And now I've got to a lot don't disks. 8. Tiny Flower Stud Earrings - melting the silver balls: thank you. Some of the smaller bits of silver that are on this sheet distributing for the earrings to melt some balls, a silver to decorate the inside of the earrings. I'm just cutting off small pieces. This technique is very easy, but it is lots of fun. I'm going to melt the boards on a charcoal block because natural dissolved some of the oxygen as they are melting on. Do you forgive a cleaner finish? Just in front of the blue chip is the hospice bits of flame. So that's the area I want to put on work. Well, I'm going to do it. Just play the flame across the Silver State, getting kosher and redder on then and it just falls up. All its own is magic. - Those now need to be quenched. Andi thing go in the safe. Typical mixture to clean up. Andi. Don't pick them up with the tweezers until they've lost that bright glow until you can see that they've gone side again. If you pick them up to sue when they're still quite soft, you can actually swash them. But I'm going to melt a few more balls and then choose the best ones for the middle of the earrings. Okay, 9. Tiny Flower Stud Earrings - soldering the silver balls: Ah, picked through the correction silver balls, such a smelt it and chosen 3 30 Hearing Andi. Now I'm going to soldier them into the middle of the discs. You need to add a drop of flux into the middle of each. Every bit too much, sir, with a paint brush. So competitive it up, you know, and then we'll use the dump paintbrush to put a couple of pieces of medium soldier in the middle off each disk and then put silver balls on top of the soldier. - They might move around a little. Bitches. The soldier melts, but they will stay in the middle of the disc. The next stage is to heat up around each disc in turn that the flux dry off slowly. If you that flux, try off too quickly by blasting in there with the heat. Then it will bubble up, and the balls on Duthie pieces of soldier are quite like you should jump off, jump out of position. If that happens, then just turned talk. Show off, move everything back to where you want it to be. I start heating up again, but it's always a lot easier if you heat up slowly so that things are far more likely to stay in position. No. - One second to see that the flux was dried off. I then moves the flame so starting to go over the middle of the discus well, and then when everything's the right temperature, the solder melted, flowed out, and you might have seen the balls moving to the middle slightly. It's the soda melted major that it melted. It made a little bit more room for the ball to sit in the middle, so you might have seen the movie together. But if you didn't watch carefully for the next one, - I now need to quench the earrings on and put them in the pickle pot to clean up that she don't need very much cleaning. They won't need to be in pickle pot very much because A with the Silver has actually being heated up at least a couple of times before because it scraps silver left over from other projects. So some of the copper in the sterling silver has already been removed, so therefore, there's not as much subsidization. The darker patch is that you can see one of them here is actually flux where it's flowed out a little bit on the pickle will clean it off. It's not unheard off for one or maybe more off little melted balls to actually come loose when you quench or pickle. If it does, it doesn't matter is not a big finish issue. Once the works cleaned up again as a little bit more flux, another piece off medium soldier put the ball back on top again in the middle of the desk and heat it up again. 10. Tiny Flower Stud Earrings - troubleshooting: Each of the earrings did lose one of its little silver balls when I put them in the pickle , so that gives me an opportunity to show you this. It's possible to put that right and to solve them back into place. I've already added a little bit of flux. Andan other piece of medium soldier. Next, the two bulls that did stay stuck. So we approach the loose silver ball was back in place, reheats the silver melt the solder on. Hopefully, this time they'll do as they're told. 11. Tiny Flower Stud Earrings - soldering earpins: Ah, silver ball was stayed where they were supposed to this time. So now it's time to soldiers fittings onto the backs of hearings. I put two pieces of easy soldier on the firebreak on there one their race war. But they are their promise, and I've put the earrings upside down on the fire bricks. I can access the backs of them, obviously. And to Dick, the first start fitting influx. Hold it against one piece of the soldier and smelt soldier onto the bottom of the sad fitting. And then, oh, that's such fitting events. The back of the hearing. So I wanted to bay, and they re melt solder so that it flows onto the back of the earring, joining the two pieces together. The part that needs the most practice usually is actually keeping your hand. Still, after you've taken the flame off your work, keeping everything still while solder cools down and go to solve it again. If you move it too soon, then they won't say salty together. Second, doing now Egyptian flux host against Oldham hold everything still well. Soldier loses its bright liquid IQ appearance. Quench. I learned those hearings. We need cleaning up pickle 12. Tiny Flower Stud Earrings - polishing: I too nice and clean hearing straight out of pickle. Next thing I need to is polished them. If you haven't got a tumbler, you can use a software brush to help to get in between the the balls into those servant type corners and then use a polishing cloth to clean the rest of them. But my policy is going to speed the job up for me. 13. Tiny Flower Stud Earrings - final thoughts: well as you see the earrings. And now out of the tumbler. Andi being pushed on a bright and shiny and ready to wear. Maybe a perfect present for someone Travels I got here the piece of silver that I cut discs from. As you can see, there's still enough here for another one, maybe two pairs of earrings. So I'm sure this Peter Silver will hear another video class natural. I hope you enjoy the cops, and it's giving you some ideas to pay. Used to scrap silver after for larger projects. I'd love to see what you make. So do you remember toe at your project with the photos of the class? Thank you for watching.
