Project Description

Design a floral-themed Thank You Card using Adobe Illustrator.

ASSIGNMENT

The assignment for this class is to research inspiration and color palettes, illustrate flowers, and design a floral-themed Thank You card using Adobe Illustrator. This class serves as a basic introduction to digital illustration in Adobe Illustrator for those with no Illustrator or art experience. It is also for those who have Basic/Intermediate Illustrator skills and want to explore tools and effects that may not have been considered before.

The goal of this simple assignment is to create something that is pleasing to the eye using basic tools and effects in Illustrator without touching the pen tool. Thus, gaining confidence with using the software and moving later on, hopefully, to mastering the pen tool and furthering your skills within Illustrator.

DELIVERABLE

Upload your final Thank You Card.

NB: Feel free to share moodboards, inspiration pictures, and color palettes that you used during the development of your design!

CLASS RESOURCES:

  • FLOWER ILLUSTRATION KEY: Download the PDF flower illustration key (see below) that serves as a guide and reminder of the different tools used to create each different floral element.

  • MATERIALS: You'll need Adobe Illustrator (free trial). I use AI CS6.
  • COLOR PALETTE INSPIRATION:

  1. Design Seeds includes a palette search by color. Always a good starting point.
  2. Pinterest is always an excellent resource and great for archiving good ideas! Check out my own Color Inspiration Pinterest Board if you're overwhelmed!
  • FONTS RESOURCES
  1. FontSquirrel is always a good FREE resource for finding high-quality fonts that can be used for commercial purposes.
  2. Dafont is a good resource as well, especially if you're doing personal projects. Look out for the "personal use only" tags on fonts you may like, in case you're considering using them for commercial purposes.
  3. Creative Market has beautiful and inexpensive typefaces as well.
  4. MyFonts and FontSpring are the go-to resource for a wider variety of high-quality professional fonts.
