Hi and welome to my new Skillshareclass,

I just love to letter with brushletters in Procreate. I started out on paper with real brushpens for about 4 years ago, but about 2,5 years ago I got a little handsurgery and after 4 days of being grumpy for not getting to becreative, my husband bought me an ipad with apple pencil so I could do it digitaIy. Ever since I barely touched real papers and pens again accept for som cards every now and then.
there are many ways to do some brushlettering and in this class I will be teaching you my way of doing the basics of brushlettering. After you managed to do it this way there is a whole wide world of freestyling out there for you, but I think the basic is very important to start with.
The basics are a little bit boring and some of you will have to do a lot of practice and some find it very easy.
So I tried to make this class as short as possible, starting out with just a few basics and from there on I walk you straight through the whole alphabet. At the end an even more running chapter for my capitals. And off course a bonus class with more fun with some highlites and shadows. So I hope you have fun and if you are a fast learner you can skip some letters but I also give my do’s and don’ts  and some tips through out each letter. If you don’t want to miss that you can watch the whole class through. I made it as short as possible for you.

You’ll be needing an ipad and an apple pencil or an other pressure sensitive stylus for this class. I will provide a small brushset and a specially prepared canvas for this class which you can find in the about section of this class..

1. Announcement intro: Both of them. 2. About this class: Hi and welcome to my new skill share clause. This is a class about my basic brush lettering. This is how my basic brush lettering look like. Well, actually, now that I think of it, it doesn't look quite as good as this was, but my lettering these days is so much different from the basic lettering. When I first started brush lettering, I didn't have consistency in my brush lettering. I was wobbling with strokes and one was sick and the other one was thin. Let us work. Go all the way from slanted to this, to slant it to that. And this is my way of lettering. Perhaps it's not the usual standard way of lettering, but it's my way analyte it like this. And some people asked me to teach them. So this is how I'm going to teach you. I will not be showing you all the way through enormous long practicing scales because that will be very boring. I will teach you a few basic you have to know and you have to practice yourself in lettering. But I want to talk to you all the way through the alphabet of how I do my basic brush lettering. I will do lettering course on bounced lettering and a course on how to get funny colored lettering and water colored lettering later after this class. So not in this class, this is fully done basic. I will going to teach you a few basic moves. And then we're going right to all the letters of the alphabet. So let's get started. 3. Explanation of the canvas: When you go into class, you get from me and Canvas. And Canvas is built like this. I have the guidelines all the way at the bottom. I have some of my letters in the alphabet and I have some capital letters. And perhaps not the way it used to be, but these are my letters. So I think there okay. Like this. And you can teach a, you can learn from me in my way of how I'm doing this. So I hope you will like it. And let's get started with the little basics. Let's go inside. 4. Brush explanation and warm up strokes: So Brush lettering is basically again, between thin and thick lines while writing. Well, actually not writing. It's about drawing your letters because handwriting, Wow, that's sucked. These are my normal letters when I write, it's hardly readable for myself. And sometimes I do a grocery list for my husband to do the groceries in these Covitz times because I hate to do Grove groceries. And I must read it for him out loud because he can't read it and sometimes I can't even read it myself. But when I go to lettering, it's all very clear. The basic Between brush lettering, I already told you. It's a game between thin and thick lines. I made for you. Brush pen. And it's all the way up here. Small set. You'll get it for me in class. I've got a pencil to sketch out your letters. If you want to write a word, it's just to procreate pencil, nothing fancy. I created for you a brush pen, a messy brush pen, and messy in the way that it has some thicker strokes and a bit of jitter. So when you make a great line, you can see it has wobbly sides. And that's to imitate the bleed of the, of the ink into the paper. Because when you have strong a smooth line, it looks to digital for me and I don't like that. So that's how it's called a messy brush pen. The same idea with the monoline. I created it. I make it to a medium size, so it's a lot bigger and you can always make adjustments yourself. And it also has a little wobbly line so you can compare it to find liner on thick paper. So that's what we're going to be using and this one's not so hard. Maybe in the next class I will be using it, but you can use it to get some little words and details Sam in it, so you get it for free in this class. Also, getting over to the messy brush pen, there are some things you need to know about it is has sensitivity. So the most important thing about Brush lettering is when you do a downward stroke, it has to be thick, so you have to press very hard. That's a fixed stroke down. And when you go up, you press with lighter pressure. And that's when you do the app's strokes. So when you're going to practice your lettering first, yes. It's a little bit about practicing. Sorry I lied a bit. You have to practice yourself indeed. First, what you need to know is practice about downstrokes. I will make it quick for you. You can practice as long as you want. So the downside of strokes, look about nine. I guess nine is a good one. Note too big for his canvas. Six. Yes, I like six. The downstrokes is just easy. Making thick lines, pressing a bit on your pencil. And the upstroke are thinner. So you make lighter obstructs. Practice and feel what your pencil does. You can make your own preferences when you go to the wrench to go to preferences, you see here at its pressure curve, that is the pressure your Apple Pencil uses for Debra's lettering. So if you have, if you think this is way too sensitive for you, maybe you should change this into a little S shaped form. That's the way Hi, how I started out with brush lettering. But I was noticing I was pressuring too hard on my pencil dose. So that's why I might add more sensitive. You can play with that to your own liking. And also within the brush you can choose for a streamline if you think you are way wobbling in writing or you're handshakes too much or you can't get a smooth lines, may be do your streamline, streamline a little bit higher. But be careful not to push it too high. Because when you do it too high and you create a o, it shrinks because you're going too fast. So that's a little bit about Ben and the brush littering. The first one we're going to practice is like this. Very easy. Practice yourself putting on hold if you think it's too long. And the second one we go into practice is a little how do you call it on the term? Yes, I was I didn't know the word anymore. So it's their string we want to talk about is the letter i. Well, that's easy. That's a downstroke, but we don't want to do that. I want to do a clean I with an overturned and a slight on the turn. So how do we do it? When I do like more, more false like now, the lines will get smoothed out because of the, the tempo I'm writing. I'm getting stuck. I hope you can see it's still Yes, I guess he's the next thing I want you to practice is making a turn and overturn and an undetermined and an overturned and, and, and the term that's what I want you to practice. It's very hard to sometimes you have to stop here because it's way too big. When you go smaller. It's more easy. It's very hot and here I'm fairly clammy. And these could be a lot smaller, but you get the hang of it when you do this, you can also make adjustments to the, to the pencil if you'd like. Your ascenders are the ones that go up in the air till the lines. So it's like simple stroke for TBI or a stroke for a p. That's the descender. They go all the way to the stippled lines you see here. So we're going to make them with a turn in a little loop. So for the beam, for example, we make this one. And for the j will make this one. So let's do it slowly. It's an uplifting movement to top. And then we go into push, push, push downwards. And we end at the bottom. So it's slightly lifted, lifted, lifted, bended pressure, pressure, push, push, push, push, stop. And for the J, It's like downwards. So we start with a push. We put down the pencil, push, push, push, push, push, bent, lift, lift, lift, lift lives all the way up here. So that's the most of our lead, SSH. And we are going to practice oval-shaped. Please be welcome to to see the whole DO video. Well, see you in the next chapter. 5. Letters A-G: So 48, we go in to do just like the o we practiced in the first. We're going to do it counterclockwise. We make an O. So we go lift, lift, lift, bent, push, push, push bends, lift, lift, lift. I went a bit slow, so a little bit cranky. And that's now hard, disarmed on them to make it a little stick around it. So I'm going to put my pencil down and push right away. Push, push, push, push, push band, lift, lift, lift, lift. So that's how I make my a so lifts, bends, push, lift all the way to the top and a stick goes pushing right away. Push down and up. That's how I do my a the Don'ts about a don't make your oval too small. And this is right. Don't make it too small. Unless you do all the letters like this, then it's OK but not too small. And also the thing you must not do is put the stick of a, I don't know how it's called stick or almost over over this letter. So just plays it closely. This is too close. This is overlapping and so it's making the letter a little bit more crops and I don't like that. And I'm going to tell you, this is mostly about all the letters that are coming right now. So that's a big don't for me, It's still readable, but I don't think it's nice. It I want to have open and clean letters. So that's about the a might be a stick. And all the way at the bottom at right, we're going to make kind of an oval shape. But we're going to weigh up the clockwise. So we're going to go up. So that must be a thinner line. And then we going down with pushing and a little bit of an upstroke. So all the way at the right, bottom sides, thin things in big, bent, bent, push, push, push, bend, and up again. This is a nice B. It has some space between in-between the stick and the belly of the, of the beam. We can also make it with a little loop. So we go up again. So lift, lift, lift, lift, bend, push, push, push. And then we go up. So lift, lift bands, push, push to earn lift. So we're going to do it like this. And when you want to have another letter next to it. We can also do, I think this loop is a little small. We can make it a little bigger when you haven't next letter to it, we have to do a curly thing to get over to the next line. I think this is a nice one. And then we go to letter C. A C is easy. As long as you know your a and your E and your your ovals already a c is just going up with the uplift, lift, lift, lift bands, push bands, lift, lift. So that's easy. Up, lift bands, Bush and lift again. The Don'ts about to see is don't go too small. I don't like it. No harm. Damned if you do all let us this way. Okay. But it's love, difficult to read. So make it open letters, Weiner letters. That's easy. Well, the d is very easy. Once you know the C, push, push, lifts go all the way up like we did with a and then we make a large thick it is one is barely touching but I'll I get don't do too much. Overlapping like we said with the a. I don't think it's clean. This one is too wide. This one is to close. This is better. Just barely touching. I like my d like this. Practice as long as you want. But I will move on to letter e. The letter E, It's mostly to the sides. Then we go upwards. So the site and upwards isn't lifting movement. And when we go down, we push and we go up again with a lifting movement again. So lift, lift, lift, lift, lift band, push, push, push and lift, lift, lift again. I think this one is a little too sick to my liking, but I have problem myself with a letter like that. So I have to practice more on my basic lettering again. So lift, lift, bend, push, push, bend, lift, lift, lift, lift. Well, this is around one I like to make my E with a coroner. This is how I like my but you can do whatever you like. They're all different 0s just as long as you go with sinner up strokes and thicker downstrokes, and make the letter a little bit wide. You can't do no harm. Let's get on to the F. The F Got too long sticks. So I think for me this is a little bit big to practice and I hope you can see when I do it a little bit in down in size, I start off way. Make a big loop. Thin, bend, push, push, push, push, push bends, lift, lift, lift, lift, lift. So the only way I'm going to make a sick stroke is a long way down. So lift, lift, bend, push, push, push, push, push, lift, lift, lift, lift. That's my f. I think this is too small. You see when I go slowly and I want to talk too much, even so, this is not a nice overturn. So we're going to make some adjustments to that so it's easily fixed. So make sure you're going to improve that when you have some corners like that. Next to the f, We have G. The G is same like the a with a j, a orgy. And making a j next to it. Also not overlapping and create enough space. You can make this as big as you want. So its lift, lift, push, push, push, lift, lift, lift again, close it and gave it a big loop. You can make every turn you like. So let's get over to the H. 6. Letters H-M: The h, almost exactly like the F, but we stop at the bottom of this line. Lift, lift lifts, bends and push, push, push and bend and lift, lift, lift. So this is how the H is done. The y data, ie, the eye, the eye. The eye is the most simple letter off everyone, everything. And then we have slightly different. I don't do a sick stroke downwards because I don't like that. Up, up, bends, push, push, push. I go upwards, push, push, push. I think it's okay. But I think this one is more funny or so. I like to fund the lettering. So choose whatever you like. I think both can be done. What whatever you choose, it doesn't matter, but if you have two case in one word or one quote, please make sure you have the same as you did before. That's why you need to practice for your mama. Muscle memory and your memory in the, in the letters. So and the other k decay you see me writing in my my lettering these days is a funny one. So I've been a little bit with cookie letters. And I do small like this from this line. And I go like that. I think that's funny one. So that's my k these days. But you can do it like whatever you want. The letter l is ready easy. Us already practice it on the B and the H, but we're going to make a slight on the term underneath. So we go upwards. Light, light, light, light, bend, push, push, push, push, push, push, blend and light. That's my small letter L. And sometimes you can choose with or without a loop, but this is easy. Just practice it. Up, up, bends, down, down, push, push, push and slightly up again. Almost like a large stretched. And we're almost halfway because we are turning into letter m. The letter M is slightly up. Then push down and stop. And this is a big don't for me. I don't want you to go and repeat this because this will be getting too close. It's not wrong, but I don't like it. I like it. Where you start here, here, down, down, and all the way to the right, straight away, make overturned on the term. That's my letter m. So actually, this isn't wrong. I said it wrong. This is also good. But I personally, personally don't like it too much. I want to start at the bottom to stretch my letters a little bit bigger and happier. So this is actually it is okay, but not for me. So I make my letters like this, down, start down. You see the difference in the letters. This is more swinging and fine tunes. So let's go to the next half of the alphabet. Well, this is CO1. Quickly write. I hope for you, It's not too boring. Otherwise, feel free to skip it, or if you like it, please stay with me and I'll take you the whole way through. 7. Letters N-T: So after the m comes the n, well, that's a piece of cake. Now when you've done the em up, bent, push, push, push, push down and stop. And all the way from the bottom and the right side of the bottom, you go up slightly, slightly, slightly bends push, push, push and little up again. So lifts Ben's push, push, push and stop. Lift, lift, bends, push, push, push, push and bend and lift again. And you start lifting. A propellant may at the bottom. Just before the bottom comes. And I start here at the bottom where we started with our ends and R j, R ends and our m's. So we're gonna make it like a, B, the rounding like hubby, push and make it a little turn. You can also stop before you make the turn. It's also OK. It's a nice p when you write loose letters. But when you want to write something next to it, it's better to make a curly p just according to your lettering styles you like is if you don't like, It's just keep it with this one. Also. Make sure you're going at the right side of the stick and not all the way or just from up here. So for the q, we're going to make exactly the warm like the a or the D. Just going downwards. So we going up and lifting up, lift, lift bends, push, push, push, bend up, stop. Lift your hand, and stick all the way down till here. And then I'm going to have a slight stripe at the bottom. When I have to make adjustments for another letter. I do. We'd like this. Q cubed, one like this. And I go up, down and up again, and then I'm going to create another letter after this. So like a queue. This is how I write my q. Then the letter R is somewhat difficult. I like to write him with a loop. So loop is always thin for me. So I write it with a little loop, little thin, thin thing. And then I'm going to start with a big stroke down and little i again. So it's little curl and then the letter I. And sometimes people write it like this. That's also fine. Sometimes it's easier to write it like this. Because I think when you have to let a P, for example, as writing letter in front of it. So capital letter P. And you have to start your sentence with the word priority. So you go into make big P And then you, Where do you get your coliform? It's very weird to get it from here. It's just how you like it. It doesn't matter how you do it. Just as long as you keep the upstroke is thin and thick and keep it consistent. So if you choose for one word, this S, chose it for all the words of all the letter S. In that part, you're going to write well, the letter t I just showed you. Not so hard. So a big thing down and the lift, it's a large i. And then with a thin stroke to match it. I think this is the only T I create. There are lots of more T sum, sum, always sum, right? With these t's. So like this and something like that. But I like this more. 8. Letters U-Z: So the letter U is almost like the letter N with overturns under turns. But then at different places, keep that in mind. So it's almost like starting with the letter I. Go, lift, lift, lift, bend, push, push, push, push bends, upwards, lift, lift, lift all the way to the top, and then create a stick just like the A against it. Make sure this is a little bit too wide perhaps, but make sure you have a straight corner here and a nice on the turn out here. Otherwise you can easily be mistaken it for an N. And I don't like that. I find it hard, defeats just ship a simple shape. But sometimes it looks like you or I don't like it. I have different ways of writing it and I'm not well, I think now after four years of writing letter V, I don't write it as much, but I think I like it like this. A downstroke, slightly cornered and a thick of a thin upstroke. So push-down, bent strongly and lighter upstroke, that's simple v. But you can also make it with a slightly undetermined push, lifts and go up. This is a nice fee. And then you can think of creating a loop ofs or IT, or you can just like the art and little wing. And sometimes you can't go even more higher and create your loop down there or a bigger loop. Just make sure you're going to read the words. Clearly. Don't overdo it. The W is almost the same like the Devi. I like to write my W's like this. So a little i and small i against it, thick and bend and thin up. And I'm going to do it again. So push, push, push band lifts, stop, hallway up, and push, push, push band lift all the way up. And also for these counts, you can make it with a loop or you can create a wide loop or just with the r, like that one. I think you can play with it. I think it's a boring letter when you see it like this. So I ride my WAS with a little bouncing these days. I think that's more fun. I like fun. Then we go to the letter X. Dx is a downstroke chump and a small sin, abstract. Now, it's boring. So we make it more nicely and software. So we're going to do uplifting and bends and push and lift again. And we go into go down with a smaller and lighter touch and go up all the way with lighter touch and down again with a lighter touch show Ds is going to be a lighter touch all the way. I think this is a nice x. It's more fun than the cross you mate. We're almost there. We're going to letter one. Letter Y is likely you. So we go up, lift, lift, lift bands and push down, pushed down, bend and lift again all the way up. And then we go into place a j next to it. So we going push down, down, push, push, push band, lift, lift, lift, lift, lifts, and make your turn. That's a y. You can also choose to make it a little cookie. It's just how you like it. Just make sure you're going thinner upwards and thicker downwards. And then we have the Z. The Z is very strange letter to me. It's almost like you go on to write a two. So it's up, bend, pushed down, stop. And we go in to create this again, but with a loop next to it. So we're going to create the same thing. Push, push, lift, lift. So this is our letter Z from brush lettering. It's an old-fashioned letter. And I don't like this one. I don't like that one. So I always write this letter Z. And it's very strange because it only looks okay when you use it in a word. So our Dutch word for some is zone. And then we write with a o zone and with an N. And now it's actually make sense when you read it. For us. There is literally son zoom written down here. So the letter Z is a strange letter when you see it loose, but when it's connected to other letters, it's fine and it's purely readable. So if you made it till here, could be complex for yourself because you done it's the whole way, the whole alphabet, my way. I hope you like it. Let's go through the capitals. 9. Walk through of the capital letters: So for the capitals, I'm going to talk you through very fast because I don't want these lesson to be longer than it needs and you have to practice yourself. So we're going to put on the capital layer. And here you can see, and you can go a layer above the group. And there you can let your and you can practice on this practice sheet. I got my size at ten now, and that's probably going to fit like this. So I'm going to talk you through.
