In this class, you will learn how to add counters and animated numbers to your videos. You will receive step by step, clearly explained instructions on how to add the counters using DaVinci Resolve's Fusion.

You will need the free version of DaVinci Resolve version 16 installed on your computer to complete the project. This class is oriented towards the beginning or intermediate Resolve users. You only need to be vaguely familiar with Fusion to complete the class.

1. Introduction: Hello. My name is Enrique and I will be your instructor for these class. In this class you learn how to read counters and automatic numbers to your videos. You can use them to show how the value of a commodity has King. You can show the trend off the real estate market how the healthy area of our ecosystem grew, or maybe how much you traveled this path. Vacation. This is a hands own class. I expect you to follow along with your computer. In this class, I will give you recipe style, step by step, very clear and precise instructions on how to had two counters to a video clip. With this guide, you will easily incorporate counters into the future videos, making their more graphic and engaging. Not all counters are created equal. So to cover the most common needs, we will create two counters one that counts currency up dollars and cents when a second counter counts down whole numbers. The combination of the two counters will give you the know how to create any counter you need in your videos. These class has two main parts. This coming chapter which is an overview off. What we're going to do and the chapters that follow which implement the counters has explained in the overview. We will use the free version of the venture. Result specifically, it's added infusion. Bages. I only expect you to have a very basic knowledge off the user interface, and it's used as we will be doing together all the fancy stuff. I will got you along the way. You don't need to have a deep understanding of fusion to complete this class. Let's start with a step by step recipe to incorporate counters into your videos. 2. Project Overview: in this chapter, I want to give you a bird's eye view off What will be doing this way. They were really doing. The next chapters will make more sense here. First Counter: make sure you're on the edit page of results. By clicking on this cycle, open the Milly it'll panel and the effects every panel by clicking on these two icons. Start by placing in via track one off your timeline. The Cleveland will serve as the background. Move the play head to the point where you want to start the currency counter. Each would now have a red frame around it. On the right hand side of your display, you should see the inspector panel. If you don't see it, click on the inspector Eichel. We have established that our currency counter will start at $1.25. Therefore type in $1.25 in the style text parameter now said the vertical ankle for the text toe Barham in the horizontal uncle to left click on the Edit icon To get back to the every page, you should see the text you just typed in in the middle of the screen. If the fusion composition is not selected, click on it. Once selected, it will have a red frame around it. If the inspector panel is not open in the Eric page, open it by clicking on its icon. Enter minus 700 is the exposition of the composition and 200 as its Y position. Click now on an empty spot in the inspector battle. Add a second fusion composition by dragging it from the effects library. This is the composition that will hold the counter itself. Just it's lengthy your needs and move the play head to about the middle off the newly added fusion composition. Now go to the fusion page by clicking on effusion I can. As before, there were only be amedi out node on the page. Click on an empty spot in the note panel to make sure No, no, the selected and add a text note by clicking on its icon in the toolbar. Connect the text note to the media out load by drugging from the text node gray square to the media out node Yellow triangle. If the text note doesn't have a Redd's frame around it, click on it to select it. We will use an expression to implement the counter before typing it in. I want to go over it with you. There are a couple of things we have to know before we enter the expression. What will the counter show. In our case, currency, dollars and cents. We also have to know the starting value of the counter 1.25 in our example. The third piece of information we need is the ending value 175.90 in The last thing we have to know is how maney frames the composition has. We can find this number on the left side of the screen. In my case, the number is 234. The number you will see in your machine depends on the actual length off your fusion composition. Now let's talk. Know the expression itself. Once we figure out what we have to type, we will enter the expression into the appropriate note. Our expression for the counter will always start with the text String that format open parentheses, double quote. Next, we will type the currency symbol a dollar sign. In our example, you are not limited to a one character symbol is a matter of fact. You can type in any text you like in this text will always precede the numbers. Next, we will type a percent sign a period the number two which indicates that we have two digits after the decimal point, the letter f and again, a double quote mark. No, we need a comma, followed by the starting value of our counter. 1.25. In his example, note that we enter the number 1.25 without preceding it with a dollar sign. Then we will need a plus sign, followed by an open parentheses. We type in now the ending value of the counter. 175.90 a minus. Sign in the starting value of our counter 1.25. Now we enter a closing parentheses, an asterisk, the world time, a slash bar in the number off frames in our composition. 234 in my case, Completely expression by typing on additional close parentheses. If you're following along in your computer, pause the video. Write down on a piece of paper, the expression we just preferred and continue viewing after that. 20. The expression. Select the text note by clicking on it. Make sure the textile be selected by clicking here. Type in $175 in 90 cents the final value of our counter. Set the vertical angle to bottom in the horizontal ankle to left. Now go back to the page and select the third composition by clicking on it. Type in minus 700 for the exposition off the composition in the inspector panel and 200 for its Y position. As before, click on an empty spot in the inspector panel. Your first counter is finished. Let's start working now on our second counter. 4. Second Counter: move the play head to the point in the timeline where you want your second counter to start , drag a new fusion composition from the effects library video Track three. Instead its length. Move that play head somewhere in the middle of the new composition and go to the fusion page. Click on the text tool in the toolbar and connect the new re added text node. So the media out note Click on the text No to select it. Enter 6540 into the style text parameter. Sit the vertical ankle to bottom in the horizontal ankle to left. Go back to the edit page and make sure the new fusion composition is selected by clicking on it. He should have a Redd's frame around it. Enter the value 520 in the inspector panel for the exposition on the composition and 200 for its Y position, drag a new fusion composition from the effects library Toe video, Track three and place it after the composition we just completed. These composition will do the counting itself. We want both counters toe end at the same moment, so trim the new fusion composition so it will end at the same point in the timeline is our currency counter does plays the play head somewhere in the middle of our latest composition and go to the fusion page just as we live with our previous counter. Before entering the expression, we will analyze it. Our second counter will start at 6540 and we'll count down to 125. The starting value will be 6540. The ending value would be 125 in my composition is 192 frames long. We type in the starting value of the counter 6540 in our case. Then a plus sign in an open parenthesis, then the ending value of the counter 125. A minor sign in the study value of the counter 6540 then a closing parentheses, an asterisk, the word time Ace left in the number off frames in the composition 192 in my case, completely expression by adding the last close parenthesis pulls the video right down the expression of a piece of paper and then come back. I tend to make mistakes when typing in a long and complex expressions like this one, so I usually follow a two step process. I first typed in the expression of a place where can easily correct it, and then I copy and paste it to its proper place. click on an empty spot in the notes panel and then on the text tool in the toolbar. A new text note will be at it, connected to the media out node, as we did before, with a text No selected. Head over to the inspector panel and click on the setting Stop Well, first type in the expression in the comments field. This is what the expression looks like in my case. No, we will copy the expression to its proper place. Select the expression by pressing control A and copy it by pressing control. See now click on the text. Stab in the inspector battle, right click on the style text field Instinet expression from the drop menu. Click on the expression field Breast control A to select the default expression fusion inserted and based our expression by pressing control, the said the vertical ankle to bottom and the horizontal anchor to left. Go back to the every page and click on the fusion composition. To select it in the inspector panel, set the exposition toe 520 in the UAE position to 200. Drag a new fishing composition video track. Three. Place it if the our counter composition and trim it to the end off the two other tracks. Move the play head to the middle of the new composition and had to the fusion base. Click on the text tool in the toolbar and connect the newly other text note to the media. Out note. Type in 125 in the style of text. Set the vertical ankle toe Barham in the horizontal ankle to left. Go back to the edit page and click on the new fusion composition to select it. Set the exposition toe 520 in the UAE. Position to 200. That's it. Your counters, they're ready. 5. Correcting Expression Errors: before we finish, I want to show you how to identify and handle mistakes in expressions. Move the play head to the middle of the counter composition and go to the fusion page. We are presented with a no tree off our right hand side counter. I am going to introduce an error in the expression. I will click on the setting, stab and remove the G from the world string. Now I will enter this baggy expression into its field. In the next step, I select the expression by pressing control A in copy it by pressing control. See now I will click on the text tub, click inside the expression field breast control A and finally control the now click somewhere in the inspector panel and your node names will turn red. This indicates that one of the nose is costing an error. In some cases, simply moving the play head will cost the error to go away. In this case, however, this will not happen. We have a riel error. So find your fending node. You start in the media out node and move back to the previous red node until you reach the first red note This is your culprit. The text note In our case to correct the typo, go back to the setting stops in the inspector panel and put back the G in the expression copy the expression by pressing control A in control. See?
