About This Class

In this class, once again, we are going over one popular motion graphic technique. This animation is a liquid filling / liquid animation in After Effects. This technique is well known and established, but within the class we will explore each aspect of it in detail - the effects, the pouring itself and its tempo (keyframe adjustments will be helpful to achieve a natural look) and proper masking. 1. Introduction: Hello and welcome to this little liquid animation class where we will prefer this kind of animation. You may think this is a well established technique. Everyone knows how to do it. Well, not exactly, because some tutorials just fly over it, adding a couple of effects on top of each other and showing you a ready product here, we will dive a little bit more into the details. I will show you the ripple effect in After Effects, which is a little bit underused because it's a really cool effect. Of course, the wave warp and a couple other effects we can apply to our liquid animations to make them stand out a little more. Here, you'll focus on one product. You will exactly do the animation you see in front of you. It will take you around 20 minutes. So it's really worth the time investment to increase your after-effects workflow. I will also share interesting After Effects tips. So definitely, you will not waste time here, can wait to work with you, enroll in the class and see you behind the scenes. 2. Creating Icon: Hello and welcome to our liquid animation practice. At first, I want to show you how you can create an icon that you will use for the animation. Of course, you can use any icon you want or any shape you want to fill it with the liquid. It will be poured from the top side. But if not, I can show you a simple way how to design something like this. It's hard to even call it design. Like we practiced two because I've already had a competition like that. Press Control Y to create a new background solid, I will call BG. I'll press Okay and ultimately lock the layer down so I can click on it. When it comes to designing an icon like that. I go for the text tool. I press your and I just press Y to have a shape like this. Or for example, you, this would be the perfect start. And depending on the font, it will change how this looks. We could work with that, but if you want to make this a wine, wine glass, just place another textbox and throws T. Beautiful. You've almost completed the design. On the T. I'll press R for rotation and I'll rotate it 180 degrees. I press V to bring that closer. And this is essentially my design. I want to make sure that I'm in the middle of the screen. So I personally, you align center. Press on the TI, align center. If you don't see the Align Window and then go to Window Align. And here I want to convert them to shapes. Maybe the tear, but closer, right-click, Create, create shapes from texts. Right-click. Create, create shapes from texts. Beautiful. I will delete the text. I will delete the U and T letter. And now let's go to the design part. You can press on the TI, you can press G to open up your pen tool. And with the pen tool, you want to select the point of this vector icon. Press Shift, select another point. And now I can simply drag those points down. The same goes for those points, this, and this. I will make this a little bit narrower. If that's a word. And the left part, left, left. I'll press Shift 2 times, write this and shift this. Shift click two times left. Beautiful. I'm an advanced designer and I designed something like that beautiful by clicking my shift key and selecting simply both. Shift down. No, no, no, no, no longer on down. Okay, you've designed the icon we will work on with this liquid animation. This would be it for the first lecture, and I want to make this different. So in the next lecture I will explain you possible effect we can use to utilize in our liquid animation. We will go and proceed to the next lecture to explain a couple of effects. 3. Theory - Effects we use: What's the difference between taking my class and watching a YouTube tutorial or other media? Well, I want to explain exactly the effect that we can possibly use. So you'll understand them in advanced, not just drop effects on top of it. And hope that you understand how everything works. For that, we're going to create a simple shape. You don't have to do anything in this lecture. Just watch. In this lecture, I will create a simple line. I'll give the line a stroke, stroke, stroke value of 55. That's perfectly fine because I want to show you the effects. In After Effects. You can press Control 5 to bring up the effects panel and type in the effect you want to apply to a given shape. But I'm using a plugin called a video copilot. And I can very easily with one shortcut. In my case, this is controlled tap, bring the effects panel right here in front of me. So I don't always have to go to the right side and type1 everything by hand. I have a couple of shortcuts already here. This is just on a side note, if you would like to get FX Console, it's free. The first effect I want to show you, obviously the most used effect on it comes to liquid animations and to pouring liquids is wave warp. What Wave Warp gives an animation to a shape and warps it into a perspective. We can influence the height, we can influence the width, of course, and we can influence how quickly it moves forward. And this is a beautiful effect to utilize in our liquid animations because we can move the position of this shape and the liquid will flow into the glass. That affect number 1, I'll turn this effect of the next effect you can possibly use. You don't have to put them. It will add that little extra effect when it comes to liquid animations is a ripple. Ripple is also a cool effect. Currently we have radius 0. If I take the center of the ripple, for example, to displace, it doesn't matter where and I increase the radius. Its derivative is very strong, so I only need to increase the radius a little bit. You can see what happens. It creates a ripple effect outside of the center point. If you animate, move or place the center point anywhere else, you can see it applies. It's a ripple influence onto the shape. So that's really cool animation that you can possibly use for, for liquid animations. As you can see, we can also increase wave height and a wavelength, of course, the face, if you want, start from a different position and speed. So this is another cool animation that happens. It ripples, it pulls it. So another cool effects. The last effect I want to show you here, it's not always useful for liquid animations. You can consider it as turbulent displacement. Turbulent displacement displaces the shape. With it, very heavily influences the shape. So it's better if for liquid emissions, use very low values like 52, for example. Because if I increase the amount to, let's say 350, you can see what happens. It distorts the shape completely. But we have a couple of ways of using the turbulence displace one, we can of course, twist the shape and we can increase the size. And you can see it creates all sorts of distortions and this kind of distortions on the shapes. But if we reduce the size, it kind of gives us this liquid feeling. In this animation which we do, we will not use turbulence displacement. But if you want, you can always even displaced the entire screen just a little bit, so everything appears a bit more liquefied. The last thing I may want to touch upon, probably, you know, but something like Track Matte. You can hide one shape with another shape. For example, we have this shape, disturbance displacement, but we only want this part of this turbulence to be displayed like, we only want this part of the liquid filling to like to be visible here. For that, we can use another shape, for example, rectangle. We can delete its stroke and we can use this rectangle as our mask. I'll press on the shape layer, I press on the track matte, and I select Alpha Matte. You can see only this little part will be displayed with this shape will influence what part of this upper shape is displayed. This is a really cool thing to know, not only an artifact general in graphic design and what is cool here, we can also invert Matt if you want it to work the other way around, if you want to be averaging, but this part to be displayed. Okay. Thank you very much for listening to this briefing and see you in the next lecture. 4. Wave: Not wasting any precious seconds anymore, going into the screen, go for a rectangle tool to create a shape which will make the liquid filling. I'll change the color just so I see what's happening. And I want to create a shape which will cover this recently. I think. If you want, you can press T lower down the opacity to see if you've covered the topside and shouldn't go above it. But it can be exactly like it. For the effect. As you know, we want to apply wave warp. You can apply the wave warp and via the effects panel L apply it here, wave. I press Enter and you can see what happens. I need to adjust it just a couple of values. For the wave width. I definitely want a bigger width. For example, the 60 or 80, because I don't want the waves to be so narrow. When it comes to the height. We also should stay around at this value, but I really liked those high waves. I want to exaggerate with this animation a little bit. So I'll make it 18. This is just about the optimal height for a full HD screen. Okay, when it comes to the speed, normally the animation is a bit too slow. It renders now, but it would be a bit too slow. What I want to do, I want to increase the speed to 1.5. Okay? This would almost sum up the animation I have. And when it comes to keyframes, I'll do keyframes in the second lesson I want to do is p for position. I press keyframe here. I will put this keyframe onto maybe two seconds. This is about the time that the liquid animation should take. And at the beginning, I will just lower down this, this shape, this layer. So the animation we have here is like that. The waves come in and slowly fill out the glass concurrently. It's a very boring animation. What do we have to do? We have to do one more keyframe. I want to give you the wave height. I want to move forward and hear the waves should subside because we are done pouring the liquid into the glass. So here the waves should be 0, press U to reveal all the keyframes. We will adjust the keyframes in the next lecture. The last thing for this lecture will be to create the mat, creating shape. I will just call this wave press Enter and you can change the, change the name of the shape. Press your pen tool, and create a new shape, which will be essentially a mat for this existing animation. I'll go close to the u here, above here. Okay, close to the u here. And perfectly this will be Matt. Click on the Wave. Make sure that this middle icon is selected or press F4 on your keyboard Track Matte, Alpha, Matt, Matt. Okay. Take both of those layers and put them behind and change their color, for example, to orange. So immediately see on the screen where the oranges and what happens, okay, we will adjust the keyframes later, but this is the initial animation. We have a nice little seamless flowing liquid pouring into the glass. In the next lecture, we will add some additional ripple effects, will add at the pouring itself, water or a water line. So stay tuned and let's go to the next lecture. Once you create it, this one. 5. Keyframes and Ripple: Now, the last little effect you can decide for yourself if you want the ripple effect. Because if you want a very seamless animation like that, you don't, if you want to give it the last touch, I will opt for rebel. I'll insert ripple and center of ripple. I will set it here at the beginning of the animation. As we can see here, I need to press on the keyframe and press on the radius as well, because the radius at the beginning should be about two. You can see it over the ripples a little bit. Increase the width, so it doesn't reveal a strongly. I want you can turn it on and off to see what happens. I just want a small ripple across the surface. Now going forward, the center of the ripple needs to move. Since I have a keyframe, it will move along and it should be. Okay, See, see the ripple is very strong, so here they should subside, but I'll still put it here. Helps you to see all my keyframes. And what I need to do, I need to add another keyframe. And at the end, the radius to be 0. This is the radius keyframe. This here it was around two. Across the entire animation. The ripple happens, oh, the ripple really strongly influences the animation. Wu. And here the ripple subsides and everything starts to become still. When the animation is done, I think the wave height could be extended to be a bit longer. Because I want the water still do move a little bit, even though the animation ends. And the wave height can be also moved forward like the ripple was. Okay, let's preview what we have before we do. Give him adjustments. Beautiful, the ripple, gritty gives this nice strong effect. I can take all keyframes just to make a basic adjustment, right-click keyframe assistant and easy ease everything at once. Prevailing purposes, I want to reduce the quality to have a really, really strong and quick pour of the liquid. I do like this animation. What I want to adjust, I want defensively to adjust the wave height. I want to open the graph editor. And when we pour the liquid, maybe we pour at the beginning a little quicker. So I'll pull strength of the wave height to the beginning. So it, it's a bit quicker at the beginning, and then it subsides a little bit and it gets a bit slower. Just imagine if you would take a water bottle and you would pour liquid in it. At first you pour a little bit quicker. Like here, I am giving high velocities, those keyframes. And then I'm making the pouring a little bit slower. Okay, in the next lecture, we will do the actual water pouring and everything will make more sense once we do that. And then we will finalize the animations with little, maybe, maybe a water droplet and duplicating the waves. So it gives us this little 3D effect. So stay tuned for the next lecture because I was of cool little tricks are ahead of us. 6. Water Pouring: Everything in this animation is nicely organized. I'll just open with you the keyframes so I see where the animation actually starts. It starts about here. So the water pouring can start from the beginning. Absolutely. For that, deselect everything, and go for the Pen tool and create a line across the entire screen. You can go outside of the screen or you can stay within the screen. I wanted this to be a stroke, actually a stroke. And I will make it instantly to the same color of the object. Okay, I have another little like third party plugin. It's a free one called bud copper. So I don't have to always go inside of the shapes. I can simply boom and I will have rounded corners. Okay. The water hit the ground around here when the pouring starts to happen? Of course, water pour. Alternate the colors. I see it to none because I want only the colorful shapes and colorful layers to be influenced by my animations. Okay, what are poor at a trim path animation to the line we created? Open up trim paths and go for the values to one hundred, one hundred, start-start. Move it 10 frames forward or maybe 15 frames. It all depends on how the animation will look. We can change it on the fly. Go to 0, take the beginning keyframes and move them forward, right? We have this little pouring. Okay, when it comes to adjusting the keyframes, we go again for a very similar look. And because I want to be consistent with those other Keyframes, Keyframe Assistant, Easy, Ease. I told you that I want the pouring to be quicker at the beginning. So I go to the Graph Editor, I select the end. And what do I want to do? I want to make it quicker at the beginning, maybe extended a little bit. Let's see how it okay, it should be shorter and it should start later. Or those keyframes should start quicker. It doesn't have to be two seconds. It all depends on how you align the pouring with. Okay, whoop. Too long. Again, those quicker. They should already be boring. And maybe the position keyframe goes from near to far away. It happens. It turns out that I need to move the keyframes almost to the beginning in order for this to look decent, OK. It will also look a little bit better when I take the wave and make it to the same color. Whoop. Whoop. This happens too long. I need to move this forward. Whoop. Beautiful, this starts to make sense. Now. I change the color of the opacity. I need to bring the opacity back to 104, the water pour. What I want to do at the end, when the pouring stops around here, the end should happen. So I bring that closer. And the pouring should end around here. Whoop. Okay, Perfect. And under little animation I want is the stroke width. I will click on the waterborne. I type in stroke because I'm lazy. Stroke with key-frame, page down, page that opens down and decrease the size of the actual line. May bring it here. Right-click Keyframe Assistant, easy, ease them. And I want this line to become thinner once we stop pouring. If you have a newer version of After Effects, I think at least 2020, what do you have on the shape, on the path and the stroke? On the stroke options, you have taper. You can taper the end. So it's a bit more clean here. And, and with an ease a little bit. You can see it became a little bit more rounded at the end. Okay, perfect. This is the liquid pouring animation. Now, it looks very static to me. So the last thing you need to do is add the wave warp effect again. You can imagine it's Wave Warp normally works from left to right. So what you can do, you can change the direction to 180 degrees and you'll warp it that way on the y-axis. And that's no problem. You just increase the width. And this is the liquid pouring we wanted to achieve the width, height. It depends. We can leave it as is, and we would have a boring like that group. Beautiful. This is essentially most of the animation I pursue. I will actually extend the stroke width because I think this stroke width reducing during the animation looks really cool. So it should start to reduce a little bit earlier, I just moved this one keyframe. Whoop. And at the end, I think that water should still wave a little bit or ripple. So at this point, here, I want to take the wave, I want to pursue, and I want to take the last keyframes, the radius and center of ripple. And I want to extend them beyond the end of the pouring, if that makes sense. And the wave height as well. Here, the wave height shouldn't be 0, it should be still like five maybe. So it still takes a little bit time to settle down. Okay. One of the part I don't like is that here it goes outside of the glass, it would spill. What do you need to do to adjust that is clicking on the mat. Actually, we need to be more precise with the math. I press G and I simply place the mat like that and like that. Okay? Just so it covers the u here as well. So it covers the EU and perfect. Now this should everything look perfectly fine, not spilling. Still. Little, a little, a little spill here. Okay. I don't like that. So I need to create a sorry for those adjustments, but we need to make everything good. Like that, like the red light that adults that perfect. Okay, now, everything should make sense. This is acceptable for this short animation. In the next lecture, I want to show you a couple of adjustments and a little water droplet, maybe just as a little addition. And we will finalize this animation. I hope this will be still a little fun and something new for you. So see you in the next lecture with finalization. 7. Final Touch: Finalizing this animation, maybe with a little droplet when they're pouring ends around here. I can imagine one page down so it height. A little drop of water could jump from the middle. I go to the Ellipse tool. I delete the stroke, and I make a little circle with my Shift key. So it's a perfect circle around here. The droplets should be in the era Bu, page down, okay, here. I press P for the position. Pay down, page down. It will hide the way. Page up, page up because I want to go back page up, page up here. Okay. What do we have now? I can move it one frame later. So the pouring and UWP, and we have this little water droplet. Another little adjustment for it is pressing S like scale, deselecting the link and making the scale 70, 130 at the beginning. So when it jumps up, it actually squashes down here. It could be one hundred one hundred. Am I on the correct keyframes? No, I'm not. I forgot to do keyframes. Shift S, key-frame, scale, and move the one hundred and one hundred can meet in the middle. When it starts, it's 70, 130, and it goes back for the position. I see I made a mistake here. The position should be hidden. So here again, 70 and 30 to 70, 138 can be closer to the middle point. So actually when it jumps onto the screen, it says squashed. Oh my god, I made the positions horribly wrong. Here. The position should be higher. Here the position should be low. Okay, that's perfect. And here the position should be again low because I want to jump and height. Perfect. Old Left bracket key here, old right bracket key. When it comes to the wave, when it comes to the wave, There's another little trick which I actually saw another tutorial Control D. You can duplicate the wave, right-click to change its color, for example, to dark green for the wave. Put it below. Take the wave and take the color to make it a bit darker. And we can apply some kind of 3D effect by just taking the wave warp and changing the direction to negative 90 degrees instead of 90 degrees. What this does, I will deselect the water pour. It gives us this little 3D effect by making two simultaneous movements on the water. So the glass looks a little bit more full. It imitates a little 3D effect. I do really like this effect, so I will now enable everything and we can preview our final animation. This is the liquid pouring we made, including the little droplet, including Ripple. And I know that you can assume that you could watch this one short tutorial on YouTube or on another platform and learn this technique. But it doesn't really go into detail. You don't really focus on it. And here I wanted you to work step-by-step on each single element. All in all, this looks like a complete animation. I do really like those types of animations.
