About This Class

             Here I will teach you how to solve the 4x4 Rubik's cube also known as Rubik's Revenge in a more efficient manner. In this course I will be teaching the ultra-efficient Yau method. It is a different method than the beginners method. I would recommend people learning this method before moving to the next step of 3-2-3 edge pairing which will be the next course in the 4x4 series I'm putting together.

             The prerequisite for this course is that you must already know how to solve the 3x3 Rubik's cube as well as already knowing how to solve the 4x4 Rubik's cube using any method other than the Yau method. This was a fun course to make and I have a feeling that you will enjoy learning from it. I'll see you in there.

1. Introduction: welcome my course on the advance. Four by four. My name is Byron. I've been solving Rubik's cubes for about 11 years or so. And within that time I've taught well over 300 people how to solve various types of twisty puzzles. This course is gonna be dedicated towards those that already know how to solve the four by four. But maybe you're interested in getting your times down a little bit faster. Maybe you're solving around five minutes, six minutes. Or maybe you just learn how to solve a four by four and you're ready to move on. I'm gonna be showing you guys my tips, my tricks, my shortcuts that I use when I saw this to get my times down. So hopefully the same time that you guys would like to be at there's not gonna be any crazy . Albums are gonna be teaching you hear is just gonna be based on technique. So with that being said, let's get started 2. Building the Foundation Part: 1: first off before we get started, I just want to let you guys know if you're interested in picking up this cube, this cubing, Matt, any of these puzzles I have sitting in the background as well as anything I recommend, such as timers or Cube. Lupe's feel free to look in the course description so you can pick some of the stuff up for yourself. So what we're gonna be learning here is something known as the Yao method. Robert Yao is a British speak uber who invented the YAHL method for the four by four Cube. The method also works on some bigger cubes as well. Robert has previously said over 100 national records in various events and to Continental records. And I'm gonna be showing you guys exactly how it's done to start off with the Yarmuth. That first thing we're going to do is make our white center so you can do this in any form that that you see fit. But typically we're going to start off by looking for a bar, and then we're going to find the other pieces and we're going to make another bar. All right, so we have our first center and then you're going to do the yellow center on the opposite side. And for instance, I have this one and this one. So I'm going to make those two go together and create that. Once you have this done, they're going to set the cube on the side, preferably with white on the left. Just to that way, it's easier for you guys to follow me, and then we're going to start knocking out our cross. Believe it or not, I'll show you guys exactly how to do that. So first thing we're gonna do is make three parts of the White Cross and leaving one unsolved. First thing we're gonna do is hold the white on our left hand side, and we're going to pick any white one in order to make Ah, let's say, ah, first edge pair. So I see this one in this one. So what I'm gonna do is set them up across from each other on opposite colors, pair them up, and then I'm going to bring that down. Now you're going to want to keep in mind the order in which these are supposed to go. So, for instance, this one is orange. The key that I like to use is something called Booger or Baugur. But I just say, Bugger, it helps me remember It's going to be blue, orange, green, red. So that way, no matter which one you start solving for, you can just follow that key and then follow the rotation around the Cube. You're always going to want to keep this top one free. I make sure that anything that is solved is going to be here, here or here, Of course, in respect to each other. Following that booger key, I just told you. 3. Building the Foundation Part: 2: So I hope you guys were having fun with this course so far. If you get prompted to review the course, please take a second to give it a quick review. Now, as we saw with the rest of these edges were just going to make sure that we keep the unsolved a lot of top so we don't mess up anything else. So that's why we're going to be doing a lot of triple layer turns. We may be doing some of these little slices like that now because we have orange here. The next letter in the lineup is going to be green. So green should be up here and we're gonna move it down. Just that way, we can keep an unsolved slot in the top. So I'm gonna be looking for a white and green edge pair. I want to have one here and there. And the way I could pair this up is I could turn it like this to bring this piece up. I could move it in the back and keep in mind. There's nothing soft here so I can move it like this. And then I could simply do that slice to pare it up, and then I could insert it like this. Turn this down to bring the orange down and move that one over. So now I have orange green. Next one should be read, so let's go ahead and knock out the red side. So I see a red piece here, and the other red piece I'm looking for is all the way back here in order to get this a paired up first thing I like to dio is I like to set this on top and then we're going to move it away. So that way, if you notice they're kind of like opposite colors here, so what you can do now is you can bring them together. You can either do this in order to pair them up, or you could do this to pair them and bring it back. Whatever you like, it's really up to you. And then we'll just follow the same thing just because of the orientation. In order to get this back in, so we'll just bring this down and insert it. And now we have our three parts of our cross that are already done in respect to each other . Last one is going to be blue or not going to insert that blue, even though it is already made. We're going to begin on the next step. We're actually going to ignore this section for a moment. 4. Centers: So now that we have the three parts of our cross taking care of, we're going to start building the centers. Now. I remember you saw that you guys saw the blue and white piece that was already taken care of. I just broke that up. So now we can start kind of fresh, so we're just going to start building all the centres all the way around. Now, keep in mind, we're going to be doing triple layer turns. We do have the option of doing this. Slice this, slice it. For whatever reason, you wanted to do that as well as thes slices. So that way we can turn this as well. But that's it. We can't do this otherwise will break the cross. We can't do that. And we can't turn the back as well. Now, we could do triple air turns and the other slices I was mentioning. So first thing I'm gonna be going for is just you can pick any color that you would like. I'm going to start with blue, so I have to write here. You basically want all of the colors that you're going to work with. For instance, Blue has four pieces I have to here and here. You want the pieces you're going to be working with on top and in front of you. Those are gonna be the two primary places is gonna make this a little bit easier for you. So I already have a bar here and I want the finished product, the finished center, to be in front of me. So when it's all done, it's in front, and I have a clean work area on top to move onto the next one. So since I already have one done, I have to get these two Teoh cooperate and make a bar. So what I can do here as I could move this far up and then when I move now, notice this blues back here. When I move this over, when I bring this bar down, this one will pair up. Now, I don't have anything solved, so I could easily just move it to the side and bring it down. Simple is that once it's done, you're gonna move it aside, and you're going to have the blue here. Now you're gonna look at that key again. So we're gonna have blue orange green, red. So we have blue here. Next one should be orange. So I want all orange pieces to be here or here for me to continue with my next step. So I have an orange bar in front of me and an orange bar back here. And I want both of these to either be up here or in front as long as there in those two. It is gonna be easy to work with. The way I can do that is, since the bar is here, I could just move this turn it twice. Since I don't have anything solved here, I could just turn it twice, and then I could move that back, which will also fix my blue. And now I have the bars here. Now, in order to get this bar down here to this side, I could just do that M slice right there. Move it over and then bring it back down. And there we go. We have blue, we have orange. Next one that's gonna be green, and we're just gonna move this down. So we have a clean slate here and up there, and now we can get to working on the green so personally what I like to do, I like toe have the bar in front. I feel like it's easier to work with. So I would like to move it like this, turn twice and then come back. Now I'm going to have three greens and one green back there. Now, the way that I can handle this case is actually pretty easy. I just wanna have a bar here in a bar there. As long as I can make those bars, then life will be easy for this case. The way I can do this is I could bring this site up and when I bring it back down, I want a piece in this area alone. So when I bring it back down, it'll pair with this one so I could do this, bring it back down. Which in turn will also fix the other two centers that I had. And now I have two bars that I could work with. What I can do now in this situation is I would put the bars on the same side so I could move this bar over here simply by doing a triple layer turn moving it over bringing it back . And now I can get this bar in there by doing the same thing I did a little bit ago. I can move this slice up, turn it and then bring it back down. And there we go. That has all of them handled. And then you can line up the rest of your cross and you can get to starting on the next step. 5. Multi-Edge Pairing: So now that we have the three parts of our cross done and we have all of our centers taken care of, all we're going to be doing is knocking out that last edge pair for a White Cross that we ignored earlier. So we're going to place them in the same side now if they are facing the same way. For instance, the same colors are facing you across to each other like this. Then if you go ahead and do the same algorithm I did in my last course, it will end up messing up the edges that you already have and you have to replace them. So we're going to move that algorithm to a different, which is a dedicated, just straight up edge flipping algorithm with hardly any side effects. It's going to be pretty easy. All you're gonna do is this. You're going to do that? Are you our prime, our prime f prime are and then fix your centers and that will pair that one up and it will keep your other cross pieces in line. Then you could just place this cross piece and now you're ready for the next step. We're going to be doing the rest of the edges. Now, this would be a good opportunity for you to do 3 to 3 edge pairing. Now, I do want to make that an entire course on its own. I feel like there's a couple of specialty cases that I need to go over. So in the meantime, just paired your edges as normal. Now, the good thing here is the reason the AL method is so, so unique and so nice is yes, you could pair your edges. Yes, you could do your centers, but with the Yarmuth that it makes it where once you pair these edges, your cross is already done, you're and that's kind of the beauty of it. Once your edges air done, cross is already done, and it also eliminates that when you're looking for edges, it eliminates the possibility of those solved. Are those unsolved edges being in the bottom layer? So all you have to really look for is the top layer and some of the sides. So I'm gonna go through an example with us Faras exactly how to go about this. So I'm gonna be doing this yellow red, and I'm going to insert that here across from each other opposite colors. Now, this is the way I like to do it. But it's up to you. If you really want to just do your normal edge pairing, for instance, you have these two and then you're just gonna pair them up like normal Do that are you are prime. It's really up to you. But this is just a little bit more advanced. It's not 3 to 3 edge pairing necessarily, but this is something that you may find valuable. So we have the opposite colors here. Now, notice when we cut across those air going to line up. So as we do that this one will also move. So we're going to try and get an orange yellow over here. The orange yellow is here, and we're just gonna make sure that they have opposite colors right there. So then now when we cut across, we have this set lines up and we have this that lines up, so that's pretty cool. Now we're going to see this one is gonna move over here. Let's see, we have that color available, which we dio. So we're gonna do the same thing here. So now when we cut across, there we go now you not in this one lined up by itself to which is pretty cool. Now you have the opportunity to just extract these if you want, and then do the same process all over again. If you like. Four you can insert. Since all of these air solved, you can insert a pair or not hair, but insert on messed up edge. And then when you cried across back, you're gonna just do the same thing if you want. So here we have green Red. We're going to see if Green Reds available. And it is. So we're just going to insert that one yet again, opposite colors. And then we have the same thing. We have green, orange, green oranges up here. We'll just repeat the process, and then we have green yellow. I don't think this one's available. It's down here. It's stuck. So we can't now. There is a way that you can, so don't get me wrong. Now keep in mind, we have this one that we can't get out. So we're just going to come back now? We got those other ones paired So we pared a lot in one go, and now we have two of the same edges. So if you noticed, we have this one, which is yellow, red and yellow, green, and then we have yellow, red, yellow green right over here. So we're gonna put them facing the same direction. And we're going to do our normal edge flip algorithm that showed a little bit ago. And then when we cut across our cross stays where it waas and we also took care of those edges. Now we're just going to solve it like a regular three by three. 6. Multi-Edge Pairing Breakdown: now, in case anyone was confused as far as exactly how to go about pairing up those edges here is another example. Kind of kind of walk through to give you guys an example. In exactly two different cases you can come across. So first thing I'm gonna do is just pick and edge. I'm gonna start with this one, which is orange, yellow. I'm gonna find its pair, which is right here, and I'm gonna place this across from it with different colors facing me so I could insert it like this. Now I have yellow facing me an orange here. Then I'm gonna look here through the one above it, and this one is green yellow, So I'm gonna find green yellow, which is already there, and it's already opposite colors facing me. So this one is already ready to go. Then I'll check this one. And this one is blue yellow. So I'll see if I have blue yellow available, which I do. And I'm gonna put this one over here with opposite colors. Same thing. So we're just gonna do it to three edges now. We we cut across. We're going to pair up. We have one pair, two pair, Three pairs. Now only it's extract. These were going to have another set when we come back that we can get to pair up. So the way we go about this, let's say, here we have red green. So when we come back, Red Green is going to land here. So we want another red green underneath it to meet it. So let's locate that red green which we have back here, and we're gonna have opposite colors facing us just like this, and they're gonna follow the same process. We have green orange. So let's find green oranges right here. We're gonna have opposite colors just like that. And then we're going to do one more, which we have red, yellow, red, yellow is right here, and we're going to do the same thing inserted opposite colors facing us, and now we're going to just switch, fix the centers, and that will pair up an additional three edges. So, just like that, you've knocked out six pairs. Now we just have two more to go. That should mean that these two are going to be the special case where you have to do that weird flip algorithm thing. So we're gonna insert it, same colors facing me, and then we're going, Teoh, do our cut, do our edge flip algorithm and then cut back And there's your edges. Now there may be a situation that you run into you that you are trying to insert an edge, and we were looking for its neighbors. So when you cut back across to fix your centers, they meet up. But that is actually not the case, because the edge that you need is stuck with another edge. And you'll understand when you get to that point. In that case, you can kind of just abandon it for now when we get to 3 to 3 edge pairing when I post that course, that's going to be when I'll get integrated due to greater detail as far as exactly how to handle that. In the meantime, you can just kind of ignore it and just move on, fix your centers, get the pairs you can, and that's basically what we're gonna be handling on the next course. So now you just solve it just like a three by three. Of course you're gonna have parity. Um, you may have parity, just like with solving any four by four. As long as you understand those parody algorithms, then go ahead and go for it. If, for whatever reason, you did watch this video and you don't have an idea of what parody is, I do have a course that shows you the parody algorithms and the different parity cases that you can come up against. So that way you can finish solving it. But that's pretty much it. I know I'm leaving you with a unsolved cube. But yet again, the prerequisite for this course was to make sure you already knew how to solve a four right for so I'm sure the rest from this point on should be pretty easy for you. But yet again, I hope you guys enjoyed the course.
