About This Class

This is a unique course about Expressions while building animated infographics.

The focus of the animations is based on Bar Graph– with different methods to create animations.

You will learn:

  1. How to use expressions to link different properties such as rotation and position
  2. How to use expressions to control effects to create complex animations
  3. How to display values through expressions

Expressions are very useful (when used wisely) and will enable you to create more complicated animations while saving a lot on keyframing.

You will learn the ins and out to creating infographics. You will also go through 3 major infographics graphs styles that will build your skills to create any animated infographic element or bar charts.

If you are new to After Effects, this course is your opportunity to understand and practice Expressions while building useful and practical animations.

Transcripts

1. 0 Intro Bar: hi guys. Welcome toe expressions and animated infographics enough that effects in this class. You will learn how to create bar graph using after effects expressions. You will also learn how easy and practical expressions can be in after effects. My name is Louis and I used after effects to create motion graphics and visual effects to spice up videos, mainly in the advertising sector. This class is about back graph, and I have two more classes where you can learn how to create Landgraf and paragraphs that you might want to look at, joined this class and upgrade your skills in after effects see in the class. 2. Creating & Animating the X-Axis: So now we want to create the X axis here with the small and the big ticks find. So first of all, I will come to composition here and we say Close all it. We closed them all. So let's create a new composition. We call it Access Dash X, for example on we are going to use 12. 80 by 7 20 and it's gonna be for resolution and five seconds only. If you want to write five seconds, you can type 500 on and it's OK, Cool. So the first thing we want to draw the exact see self I will use the pen tool. Come around here, click on, go further, for example here and click again. I will hold shift to make sure I'm having a straight line. Let's make it only five picture on. Of course, no field. Good. Now we have our bar, but we're going to do is to create, firstly the big ticks. So I will press at the NATO and zoom in Onda. We also use the pen tool with select everything we click unless make it big enough. Could we are going to give it the stroke white so it's different and now we are going to duplicate it all over or a replicated using the repeater. So this is the X axis. So I will right here access that's X. And this is the big tick. We rename it for two. Big, big is enough. Cool. So I will open here The layer for big. I will come to content that can see my shape. I will come to a repeater within the content, I would say at the repeater, Let's move this one of it up. We have three repeats only Andi opened the repeater unless they make them 14 repeats. Good. This is too far. We come to the transform early, Peter on. We shrink it until we find it like it's OK and that's assistance is fine. Could we have done this 1st 1? Now we need to make the small ticks. I will do mean again. Press alternate, and you mean so The small ticks will come from here. Okay, Andhra shift. Make them that big. Same stroke. But let's change the color. We go to darker grey, something a bit darker than the access itself. Good. Now this is small. For example, would write whatever you want. I will open in bidding the content. I will add the repeater on DA. We wanted to repeat four times. Okay, It is very far. So we're gonna bring it nearer until they are or inside one single breast control to move very slowly. Now, having done this, of course, I want to repeat it all over. So what I will do is a close this repeater come to content and add another repeater. This time this repeater would repeat 13 times. I think so. On then. We need to work on the spacing. We didn't get in over here. They should fit at 100%. Here you are. The zoom out, Andi, It's fitting. Very nice. What we need to do now. Just take the X axis and put on top and we hide all the ball. Now we need to animate this. I will come to big. I will open it. Go to the repeater. I will keep the same number of copies here and after one second I would keep them again. The number of copies go back to the beginning and make it zero. So that will be our animation. It's coming up. Very nice. Now for the small. I will do the same. I will open small, but I will go to the second repeated here at one second. Same land here, for example. Off course. You can give them different timing. I'm gonna key frame the number of copies to 13. Come back to the beginning less move a bit further until this one has started. For example, on the key flame and make it zero. We look at our animation. No, but just look at it at full scale. We're only lamp review. No, but it's quite beautiful. In fact, now we can adjust the X axes a bit more. If I come to the X axis, We shall stop and remove. Here. Cooled. Now what? You can do it. Just use the left arrow to move it to the side to the left side. Okay. Now this is done. Decks access. We move on in the next lecture to do the Y axis 3. Creating Y-Axis & its Labels: Let's create now the Y axis. I will come to project Choose X axes, selected and duplicated. Press enter to name it and we right? Why? So now we have the Y axis here I will double click toe, open it so I can either rotate the access here, rotate the layers or rotate the composition. But it's better if I rotate the layers here. That's what I think. At least I will choose them all, bless our rotation and give it a rotation off 90 degrees. But the access need to be moved, so I will choose the access itself and move it using shift. I was a mean on adjusted as but as possible. That's okay. So here it's for York now. We don't need all these values here. We have 12 of them. What we are going to do is to make it shorter, go to small and big. We press you, we have the key frames. We come to the last key frame. Onda. Let's say we make the ticks. For example, it and the small one here only nine. Choose all of them. Pick it on, take them down. The X axis is very big It's going beyond what we want. All we can do is to come to the bath itself, go to the path that's the shape That's the bath. Click the shift and take it up. Let's go now. Here it's OK, That's OK. Now we have X axis And why access? What you are going to do is at some figures or some numbers here for the Y axis. How do you add the numbers? So I want to add 1000 2000 3000 4000 and so on until the end. Also mean go to the 1st 1 Onda type 1000. Okay, The frontier is Austria's song. That's okay. You can choose any fun to want. No, this is my first layer 1000. I need to duplicate that layer all over and change the values. What I can do is play a bit with the expression, though I don't need that all I can really just type the figures here. But I want to show you that expression. I will come to text and you have sore sticks. I oppress alternate and a click on the stopwatch. I bring the expression what I want to do is use this layer. So that is this layer. Got a name? Simple. Now look what happened. If the name is 1000 the value here is 1000. Because on the source, tax is returning the name. If I change the name, I make it 2000. Then it will become 2000. So that's very good. But that is better. I'm not. Is this is layer one? Number one and it is 1000. That's what we want, right? One those. The figure here is what you see here The number is the index. So now it's 123 If I click here on replaced, this was Index. I will get one if I multiply it by 100 times 101,000. I will get 1000. Now this is a glare Number one If I duplicated, it will become level Layer number two. So what I will do? I will take it down. So now on, click and pick it up. You have 2000. That's pretty nice. You see Here It made 1000. 1001. We don't want this. We want here one Onda we want to now I can take two and duplicated drop. It's under the to now it's 3000. The figure is 3000. Because we're using the index. Notice how we did this expression. I opened the expression. So this layer, it means this layer got index. So this there is a property or an object and that index is a value. The index is this one. This number here is the index of the layer times 1000. So the only condition I need here is to be able to put them in the right order. 1234 coming down. And then I have the value automatically. What I will do, I will duplicate again. Take four. Put it down on move it up here. Go up! Duplicate again. All the values are in. I would select all the layers here From 9 to 1 I'll come toe a line, I will align them right. That's the 1st 1 Then I think that OK there on the ticks and they're pretty need here. Now that we have finished the y axis, we're going to use the area off interest and choose exactly what we need, okay? And then composition club composition to the region of it. So I just have this camp for the X axis. I'm gonna do the same. I will choose the area off interests and just composition and drop to regional interest. Very fun. Before we finalize this lecture, I'm going to create a new composition. And that's gonna be the main composition. Let's say this is bar chart find. So I have the bar chart. I will take the X and drop it. I would take the Y and drop it. And here you are. You have your graph now. It's different from the one I showed you because we added nine instead off seven only lets animate the Y axis in the next lecture, I'm going to show your so something very interesting about how we can any made the Y axis. 4. Sequencing & Animating Y-Axis and its Labels: the Y axis are already animated. The ticks already animated. And we inherited this from the X axis. Now I need to any meat or the figures here from 9 to 1. Actually, I'm not gonna any meet them. I'm gonna take a portion here on select all my layers the one that have numbers and breast alternate right bracket and trim them. The alternate right bracket has streamed them. And if you look here, we have only five frames or six frames. Something like this. Now I'm going to select from nine till one gonna right click and go to key frame assistant and say sequus my layers. Now it's gonna sequence that there is the way I have chose them and show them from 9 to 1 to nine will appear the 1st 1 And I want any overlap. I don't want any transition. I want aftereffect to just align them or sequence them. I press OK? No. Well, exactly happened. Now the layer are quite sequenced. If you move this up, you can see how the sequence is happening from layer one to layer. Not because I have chosen from 9 to 1 it sequence from 91. If I had chosen from 1 to 9, it will have been the inverse. Here. Let's see the animation timing now is it good enough? You will tell me, but they are disappearing. That's okay. Let them disappear for now. I will fix this one. I think it's OK, but there are a bit, you know, to slow. So I will undo the sequencing. Onda, right, Click again and say key frame assistant sequence my layer. I will use the overlap without any transition unless they overlap them. Only three frames click. Ok, let's look at the timing Now. In fact, it's perfect is just coming up with the ticks here now, since these layers are being cut here off course, they're not gonna appear after the cut. What? I will do a press end. Take the timeline indicator to the end, select all my layers here and press alternate and also right bracket. Now it has trimmed them or towards the timeline indicator. If you play your animation now, they will not disappear anymore. You notice how much time I saved here though? I'm explaining to you. But I saved a lot of time on the meeting. These ones and sequencing the layers. So just appear. And that's pretty cool. Pretty nice. Now we want to do one more thing. You know this here. These things are all appealing automatically. You know, the 1st 1 just appeared. See, what we are going to do is to select all the layers and move them just a bit as they free me. Fact. Now they will appear just after. Let's go back to our bar chart and we zoom at 100% and let's play the animation. Now this political, let me zoom out or extend this one on. We play. No, but if I wanted faster, I can go back, change the key frames. All we can use family map. We'll see about it later. So we move on in the next lecture, we will create the bars and then we create the labels for each bar 5. S2 5 X Axis LabelCreating & Animating Bars & their Values: So now let's start drawing the bars here. We want the bars. This 0% at the bottom and 100% is at 9000. So obviously when the bar is 100% fully extended, it will reach 1000. Let's do that. First of all, I locked the layers ex And why? So I don't choose them by mistake. Anyone to draw our bar? Cool. I will zoom in. I need to make it quite precise. Here I'll click on the rectangle Tool, Click and take it up off course immediately. I will take the the anchor point and snap it to the bottom one. Fine. Now what is 100%? I will take it and snatch it up. That's it. This is almost 100%. Something like this is OK. I will rename the layer here Bar one. And there is a reason why I made it about one and you will see. So how did I animate this? I will come to affect them present. And you was a linear wipe already search for it. You can search for it using wipe you will have your linear wipe will take it and drop it on the layer, so we have our dinner wipe. Now it's an effect. Cool. How does it work? If you have 90 degrees here, it means the 90 degrees is on this side on the right side, for example, and it's gonna wipe. Or essentially, You don't want that if you make it zero degree. If you wipe is gonna wipe from above. Not is what's happening or from down, it's gonna bite from down until the 100%. That's not what you want. So the best way. I think it's 1 80 and let's try. Is it working? 1 80 of Fine. It's working fine, Okay? And that's exactly what you want to start from. 100% and goto 0% if you make it minus one a. D. Let's see the effect here, and we start from zero only goes down. So when it's here, it's 100% and it goes up and it's, you know, the inverse value. Fine. So the leaner wipe when it's complete, it 0% when it is not complete at all. It's 100% but the values that we are going to put are gonna be in first. So if the bar is here, is not gonna be 60%. It's gonna be 40%. That's David. That 40%. We can also use 1 80 degrees that comes to the same and go to our bar and start writing its label. As you mean. First, I want to adjust the bar at a very close distance here. That's cool. Don't let the touch and then I'm gonna add a next year and I'm gonna die. For example, 12 So two figures is OK. In fact is better toe type it it. I guess this is the biggest figures. The it is the beginning. I'm gonna put it here. But But of course I don't want it It I want the value off the linear wipe. Not the 60% but it is 40%. So it's 100 minus 60. It will give me the remainder, which is 40%. I will open the text and the source text on. We'll use the pick whip. This is my expression and building it and take it and live it to transition completion. Click out and I get 60. But it I want 40. The 40 here is 100 minus the transition completion. I'll come to the expression bring the cursor in the beginning. All right. 100 minus the transition Completion. It is 40. Now, that's pretty good. Now you're not is very well. I have to replicate this 12 times how I'm gonna do that. But then if the customer yourself want to change the values is gonna be tremendous work. So we need to find a way, and we need to use expressions, so we can really, you know, manipulate this. And the changes later on are very simple. We will do that in the next lecture. 6. Replicating Bars & labels with Expressions: Now that I have the text here which we call idiot linked to bar One, I need to duplicate Bar One and the text. Now, Every time I duplicate the bar one, it will become bar to off course the text. I will have to come and change the number. Here it we're gonna be barred to How do I find a shortcut to make my life easier? So first thing while I'm going to do is to the name the text to one. So text one will be linked to Bar One. I will just come to bar one, enclose the courts just after the space and then right. Plus this layer dot name, the sea is gonna work. I'll click out great. So actually, this layer name The name is one. Okay. We're not using the index like we have them before. We are using the name. The name is one, and it will translate this into bar one. Cool. So this is done before I start duplicating, I will want to put the key frames to do an animation and then I will duplicate with the key frames. It will come here. So when it's almost here okay, I will keep frame transition at 100% fine. And then when it comes a bit further, Okay, for example, here I will make it. Like we said, 60% sure it's we're gonna come up on 60% now. Not this was happening. The figure here is going with a lot of the Siemens. We need to round the figure. There's something very simple I can do here. I will remove the parenting to make some space click on right something like Be equal. It's a percentage will be equal at the end. I'll put a semicolon. I'm really making it easier. Not more complicated. Press enter Ana said, Be equal math. If you remember, that was the first lecture that around. Be on. That's it. Yes, that's pretty good. So I was going from zero to so on. I think I have key framed, so I'm ready to start duplicating. If I choose the text there, then the shape, layer and press control see conclude V. Then it would duplicate the purse. One actuals. Now that is controversy Contrave duplication. But if I press control d notice what will happen but you will be put down and the text will be done. That's okay. I think this is better in our case. Now we move a bit to see what want to do is to grab them both on. Move them after a shift. That will be better. I'm gonna control de again. And here you are, duplicated All of them. You saw it on speed. And they all have the same value. But not is what's beautiful here. I have all the labors, one after the other. And they're old linked to the bars that are one after the other. Also, I will choose from Bar Juan Tobar, 12 impress you. I have all the key frames I want to have. And I can change the values the way I want them from here. So I will. Come on, get the Lasky frame and start changing the values. I will start from number two. I'm gonna give just random numbers here, Make it bigger just for it to look beautiful. And then here make it even bigger. Let's look at our animation now. You don't need a ramp review. They're all coming up at the same time, which is not very beautiful. This shows that we will do that. Also the sequencing in the next lecture 7. Sequencing and Animating the Graph Bars: So now we want to sequence our layers. And so the appear one after the other. I will look where the animation is finishing less open the key frame for this layer. The animation finishes here. Andi, I think it's pretty long. So what I will do? I will press the tilled and then select all the layers here. Bless you. All my key frames will appear. I will choose all the key frames up to buy one. Of course, I m bring them nearer. Cool. So what do we have here? It's over here. That is around it. Frames. We have five frames off overlap. Yes. So I'm gonna come here and having selected all the layers, I'm gonna press alternate and close bracket or right bracket. It will all dream now to make sure that I selected the right way. I will go to layer one, choose it and then press shift and shoes. Layer 12. Right click. Go to key, frame a system sequence layer and give them Let's say seven frames here would be. Okay, Aunt, Here you are. Let's go back to our animation and see the whole speed. With the beginning running a preview And, of course, they're coming quite fast. Quite beautiful. But now off course, we want to go to the end and having chosen all my layers, zoom out after Nate and right bracket or close bracket, and we treat them on the other side so we can see them and we troll up all the layers. Look outside. Let's see our animation. Now. How is the timing? It's trying to give you now. Cool speed enough and quite nice on the bars are appearing pretty fine now because I'm giving you this lesson. So maybe I missed something. Something should be adjusted on. I hope you will go back and tweak it to make it even much better. That is the final one. We will move on to put it in a three d camp on DA Make it, you know, three dimensional on giving this kind of perspective. So it attracts a bit 8. Adding Shadows and Animating in 3D: so before start to reading the three D. Let's put the shadow on the bottom here I will create a layer new layer on a solid. Any color will do. Let's make it OK for now on the stick it down. Make it very, very thing I will do. Put it here. Well, come on putting down here, we can make it a bit smaller. So it fits on Lee. The shadow, all the chart. It's only the chart. Fine. What you're going to do is to take the fast blur that I already looked for on Drop It Off. Over. Did are shallow on. Let's give the value of 300 or 400 something like this, which will work you are now. It's looking like a nice shallow for this one. We can do the same. Also have, let's say shape rectangular cheap because I can draw it easier here. Onda changes color, for example, the feel weak in a weak, this color cool and then also give it a fast blur. And then we blew it like you have done number, so it has a certain controlled. Then we can take both of them. Select both of them and go drop them at the bottom off. All the layers you are That's quite school. In fact, the shape layer we can make it smaller. Let's make smaller like this. Good. Now we have. You know, it's looking with the kindof shading behind. Cool. Let's create a new composition. Now we call it three D dash bars. Graph, graph. Okay. In this composition, which is open already here we take the bar chart and we drop it here. Very cool. What we will do is to make a three dimensional and then opened the rotation repress are at the beginning here. We wanted to give frame the rotation and take it out this way because the first bar is gonna appeared here. So I want to bring the last part in. Then I go, for example to two seconds. Yep, here or one second on. We bring it back to zero. And after that we take it over there at the end and we rotated now this other way just a bit. So it keeps on moving. Let's run the whole animation. And here you are. It's quite before off course. You need to come and trick it now what have you learned? We have learned a lot. I can assure you if you review what you learned you learned a lot about expressions. They're very simple ones. But the control is pretty NYSE. The control is pretty interesting. Now notice If I were to do without expressions, I will have a lot of key frames for everybody. Andi, I will have also to duplicate and replace everything with key frames instead. Off expressions. So thank you very much for listening. And I hope this section was very useful for you.
