this class will teach you my easy method for painting abstract watercolor lions. These lions are fun and surprisingly easy to paint. I have shown 3 versions of abstract lions that I have recently painted in this class as well as provided a real-time demonstration. 1. Abstract Lion Intro: Hello there. This is Brendon, all and this class. I'm gonna be teaching you how to do these easy abstract watercolor lions. I developed this little lion template for, uh, class that I was teaching the local plus and, uh, it was pretty fun. It's really easy if sounds good to you. Please enroll, and I'll see you in class. Thanks. Bye. 2. Abstract Lion Supplies: Hi there. This is Brendon on. This is module number two. We're going to go for the materials that you need, So I'm gonna be pinning on this camps and watercolor cold press paper. It's pretty inexpensive paper, and it works pretty well and it's in the thighs nine by 12 inches. I use a pellet that it's basically a scorer white plate that I picked up at the dollar store. And it works really great for appellate. And then I'm using my main pilot, which is a mix of several different brands of professional quality paint. But you are welcome to use whatever water color that you have on hand. This, um, abstract probably utilizes five or six colors. This is just my swatch chart. And then I have a little Roland. I've made one of the groups that have long to on Facebook. They were talking about how they like to see all the artist materials that they're using, including their water container. And this is my water container, and that'll be off camera. And, um, I have a little make a fiber cloth that I used to you control the amount of water that remains on my brush when I go to pain, and that's it. So we just need some watercolor paper and watercolor paints. Something to mix your colors on if you like. And you could even use your palate. There don't come to do that and some sort of water dish and some brushes. Since this is the loose style, I'm going to be mostly using this Rafael quill and size 03 I like the Rafi Aquiles because they actually had a lot of texture without any effort on my part. And they're just They're just beautiful looking brushes, aren't they? Anybody like to paint with those, right? So I'll be using these brushes and detail brush, which is daler Rowny round and zero. And that's it because they're ab stark, so they don't have to look exactly like it. I'm excited. Thank you for enrolling. I'll see you in the next module 3. Abstract Lion Process Overview: Hello and welcome back Sprinted Knoll. And this is module will include a process overview. I do apologize that I did lose the volume from what had already taped, so my, um, actions might not line up with the video, but I'm going to do the best I can. So what I thought before we started was that I would review kind of the process of what we're going to do in the shapes. So if you can see, this head is basically a modified diamond shape, so it has a flat top, and that's going to be our first thing. That we're gonna paint is going to be this head shape, which is basically a diamond with a flat top. And then the next thing that we're going to paint is going to be the ears. And those are just two circles on either side of the head at that little slut diamond kind of shape before the flat spot. So the flat spot would be the top of the head, and then the years would be on the side, and then we're going to draw a triangle on the bottom for the body, and then the shape is a why that separates the legs from T chest and then 2/2 circles representing the feet and then three ovals on each of those half circles which will be representing the claws of the lion and then on either side, we're gonna draw kind of a snake like shape. And that's gonna be the tail. You do that on whatever side you're light. And this is just a basic template for this abstract lying. And then the face about halfway between the diamond widest part of the head and the chin, which is the bottom. That's where we're gonna put the nose. And the nose is just a triangle shape with the point facing down. So that's pretty easy. And you can think of that as a y with the top kind of bring ended, shape its muzzle and then it upside down. Why? For the mouth. And that's basically the mouth area. And then just three whiskers, 23 coming out of the sides and then the mine from the try and go going. If she continued it on and then 1/2 circle, continue that line on on start that triangle, then made a house circle. Those would be the eyes. And then if you think of the main as pattern of diamonds representing hair around the face , that's kind of the shapes that will be doing. And I always like they talked to be the longest and then just to kind of flow around the face. And that's plenty. What's in my mind? Design doing that? And then, of course, for cemetery purposes like the top and the bottom to be, uh, kind of the longest spots on the main. I just think it looks. I don't know what the word would say balanced, I guess. Bounce. And so then the balance of the rest of the main ISS is basically going to be kind of these diamond shapes. And then, of course, the diamond like shapes at the end of the tile for the the tail. And that's pretty much the process that will be using to paint this abstract lion. So just a review real quick. First step is going to be that modified diamond shape that's going to represent the head, and then we're going to draw cheese circles on either side over the years, and then we're gonna flush out our body which is that other triangle, And basically, we're gonna put in the half circles in the why and the claws. And that's the process. So it's pretty simple, comes out pretty cute. There are. They all come out differently. And depending on where you put the body and where things were going to go, don't just look differently. And I forget what I was talking about here. But I think it was this brush which I didn't end up using, so that doesn't really matter anyway. Okay, so one more thing I want to make sure that I cover before we go under the demonstration is that I will be using Majel Omission gold watercolors and the colors that I will be using will be burnt Sienna, Bert number, Van Dyke Brown and Permanent rose. And this lesson will be doing the abstract watercolor 1,000,000,000 demonstration. If you recall. I had an issue with my sound when I was recording these modules. So I'm going to be doing the voiceover. And I just wanted to remind you that I'm to do my best to line up my words with actions, and hopefully that's gonna work out just fine. So you see right here I'm just using those little alligator clamps to, um, clamp down my page. Just keeps it from working and buckling, and it works pretty good. Okay, Okay. So we're starting out with my Bert Sienna and I had accidentally grabbed the wrong watercolor brush here, but then I'll be changing them out to that Rafael Cuello we talked about, um this is Ah, silver, black velvet and Lotto artists use them, and they're OK. I just for a loose style of painting like this. I prefer the Raphael Quills there. They hold a lot more water, and they just, uh, seemed like they work better for a more loose process. And so here, you see that we're doing that first stage that we talked about in the overview of that head that is a modified diamond shape, uh, flat top. And that white up there in the top left is actually a reflection on the water from my light . And I apologize for that. I didn't really notice that as I was taping. Well, I'm not looking on it as I'm taking, but it was I did see it there, and I was thinking that that was just a drive, but it did. The, um It's an overcast day, normally, like to take with the natural light coming in the window of my studio. But it was overcast, So Okay, so we've done that first step. The next step thing we're gonna do with that burnt Sienna is those years those two circles on the sides of that headed that we talked about and not much really to say about this other thing. Two circles. So following after that process of review we talked about, I'm going to do the body in that sort of trying to go, and it doesn't really matter if it touches the head. This is long as you remember that where the chin is going to be so you can put your mean in there, And so it's a pretty basic shape, and I'm just filling it with color. Um, that burnt sienna. So just reviewing what we discussed in last module, and I'm going to put in my tale, I decided on this lying to put it on this side just seemed like I had a little more room there. And you don't have to do your painting as tightly as I'm doing here. You know, just happened to come out that way. So here I'm grabbing the permanent rose that I'm going to use for their insides of the years and the cheeks and bottom of the feet, which I just think looks cute. And so this lion, a template abstract lion template I designed, developed more for towards the boy side. But I am going to do about this demonstration where I do this abstract watercolor lion in, um, more girly colors that girls like, you know, from the last face painting gig. I did just in general, because I have lots of girls that their favorite colors usually when they're little art Pekan purple And so I thought you know what? It would be fun to do this lion and pink with purple main and make it really girly with some eyelashes and a bow. Maybe, and right there, I think I was just reviewing the colors, but I went over that pretty well in the last module, So I don't feel like I have to tell you again. But just in case you wanted to know, I'm using Majel. Oh, mission Goldwater Color. It's my favorite brand, and the reason is is because I think it's the most vibrant. But then also, that entire line is developed to minimise the drying shift that occurs sometimes when you're using watercolor. And so I knew how first during that was two knee with and I would get a painting done that I wouldn't love. And then it would just look like red. And so here and laying down the main. And since I'm going to be using at least three colors, is burnt sienna watching just the same color that we used on the body. But this is just a less diluted version. I made space for the other two colors as I start to put in these, basically, just lay the brush down and grab cool, you know, those diamond shapes we kind of talked about. Um I'm thinking about that. I'm going to be laying in another row of these another two rows of thes indifferent colors . And so that's why I'm kind of leaving that room there for where they're going to go. And so you could see this Lions already starting to take shape. And it's just such a durable lion. And there I'm showing you that the other cheek fillers I'll be using will be that burnt number and the Van Dyke Brown and they're both sort of warm browns. And so I just think they would get together. And I just love this little guy. He's cute. I don't care what so kind of reminds me of like sunshine. So I'm laying in the second road, which is the I'm using the birth number. And then, if I recall correctly at this point, once I had that laid in there, I believe I did. You let it everything that I painted so far dry for a minute. So, um, can take a break and came back. That's what I was say I have been pretty cute. Okay, so here you can see that I allowed the painting to dry and normally, really, usually sometimes that's the time I use paint to paint the face and outline. But in this case, I've decided that I'm going to use, um this unit ball Signal Chul seven black gel pen and with the bull tip just because I like it and it's fast. So if you recall how we do, this face is just an upside down triangle and they kind of an upside down. Why continue the Diagne on the eyes? And so yeah, here we go. So there is my upside down triangle. It's kind of a way with the top and then the kind of an upside down. Why make the muzzle if you feel comfortable, you could do this in pencil beforehand, and then I just kind of continue the Imagine that triangle side continues on and follow that diagonal line now and then make 1/2 circle 90 that on both sides for a little cemetery . I don't get crazy about things about anything, so you just try to make thighs. Even if you do, that's great. And if you don't and still be cute, - okay , just fill in those eyes that news and you don't have to outline. I'm going to be outlining this line and you don't really have to do that. But it's kind of my style aesthetic. So, but just like a black outline on. So I'm going to outlining. If you recall and have a little why that separates the legs and then also give some shape to his chest. That's what I'm putting in there. And then imagine half circles for those feet. The things I really enjoyed about this lion. Besides, I just think it's cute is the, um, repetition of the shapes, the basic shapes. So here you just see that I am continuing Teoh outline this lion can. The final things that I need to dio are, um, the Van Dyke brown in the main. And then I will be bringing up those pinks a little bit more and maybe a little outline on his tail so you can get as detailed or not as you want with this land. I'm not getting very detailed here because they want a bore you by standing hours painting , working on the shading, but you get the idea you could take your time, and I really developed the contrast a little more to make this painting even more exciting by putting in shadows and highlights. Here I am going for the Van Dyke Brown and just to fill in that main with that third color , get a little more dimension and you can't really tell because my hand is in the way. But I'm basically just laying it down. I'm flicking it out and, uh, my owner the better. Really. The heresy and getting ready to go in with that permanent rose and just pick up those Dixon . It's make those pink spots a little more vibrant, and that's where I was starting. Teoh developed the contrast a little bit more by using the birth CNN on a little less deluded Just give a little mention to the tail in the body. And then I realized that I didn't want to bore you. By developing this production. It's still gonna look you even whether you how complicated you may get, really or how much shading you dio more shaming. Obviously, the more shading and, um, shaving, and I don't know my vocabulary, Cicely Dimension. The more exciting the painting will be, but for this purpose is of this demonstration. I didn't want to get bogged down and trying to create the best line. And I just kind of wanted to show you how to do this land. Really? Um more interested to see how you were able to develop the template If you find painting this line enjoy as enjoyable is ideo The keys is cute is ideo not really Look forward to seeing your abstract lions if you're willing to post in the project section And so here I'm just checking my colors to see what color blue want to use for the background I like to use blue because I want to get this guy But if you this land with a little bit smaller And maybe the painting was done in the landscape rather than portrait orientation, you could put this laying in the grass Maybe with some big clients, you know, it would be super cute. I chose just to get with some older marine blue Yeah, and if I had had some salt in the room with me, I would have thrown himself on that for just a little more texture and excitement. Alright Even would probably looked cute without even putting in a background. So I'm just But I like Marine Blue. I thought it would look pretty next to the warm stones that are in this painting. And, you know, never, never be afraid to slip your painting over whatever directions gonna make it easier for you to paint. Sometimes I don't, but it's only because I'm trying to worry about how it's videotaping. I prefer to build the move, my painting around and paint. It's just more enjoyable, really. And so just finishing this up. And, uh, I want to say thank you for taking my class. So it's just a really good support my heart, and at the end I will have the final, my end of which one thing that you don't see in this demonstration, because I forgot to do it. Waas put in the whiskers. But at the end, when before I took the picture, I put the whiskers in, and that was just so street whiskers. And then I also have a couple pictures at the end of other lions that I've done just in preparation for this class. Really. And I'll have a bonus demonstration of a pink lion in the next module if you stick around for that. So thank you for taking my class. 5. Abstract Lion Bonus Speedpaint:
