Welcome to my 3rd class here on SKILLSHARE. My name is Natasha Keeto. I will show you step by step how to create this painting. This is for a beginner or intermediate level. The reason is because you can make this as simple or as complex as you would like. I will show you my techniques how I was a able to create this painting and you are more than welcome to add as little or as less as you would like. This is what will make this painting unique to you.

Painting and Drawing are NOT the same thing. You can still paint even if you feel that you cannot draw. Trust me. There are plenty of people who excel at painting, and will not touch a pencil with a 10 foot pole. I encourage you to at least try to take my class and I promise you will surprise yourself. Have fun with this painting and add more or less of your own ideas and most of all just have fun and let loose.

Materials Needed:

  1. Paint pallet or a disposable plate.
  2. Blow dryer: for quicker drying in between layering of paint.
  3. 4 Brushes:
  4. 1  square tip brush for painting and blending , 1 round tip brush, and 1 fine tip brush
  5. Primer to prime the canvas. Any Primer is okay. I used Gesso Artist Loft brand.
  6. Acrylic paint: I used the Apple Barrel Brand, but any acrylic brand is okay. Try to find one with nice opaque coverage, especially for the white.
  7. Canvas used: I used a thin 14 X 12 Canvas.
  8. Old washcloth for drying paint brushes between use.

1. Introduction and Materials Needed : Hi there. In this class, I'm going to be demonstrating how to paint a cotton candy sunset on the ocean with a dolphin. My name is Natasha Kito. I really hope that you enjoy this class. Also, please check out my social media. Now I am going to go over the materials that I used for this painting. The first thing you will need is a canvas. I used a 14 by 12 flat canvas. I also use Jess Oh, to prime my painting. I also used a washcloth to dry my paintbrush in between colors and appellate toe Hold all my paint colors and of course, a container to hold your water. I also used a large square tipped brush and a thin fine brush. The colors that I use for this painting are white, black, yellow, bubble gum pink, lavender, light blue and dark navy blue. Now that you know all the materials you will need, let's get started 2. Canvas Prep: in this section, I will show you how to prep the canvas. I like to use Jess Oh, to prep my canvas. The reason that we need to prime the canvases because usually the canvas comes with texture and what looks like little divots in it, which means that we need a smooth surface. And in order to achieve that surface, we need to prime the canvas. I like to use Jess Oh, because it drives fairly quickly, and usually I just need one thick coat and one thick coat is usually good enough, and it gives me a nice surface that allows my pain and my paintbrush to glide very smoothly . As you can see, I'm applying the primer with my painter's knife onto the canvas. There really is no wrong way to do this. I'm just using the painter's knife to get the material onto the canvas, and later on I will smooth it out and then use my brush to smooth it out even further. All we need is one even thick layer, and you can even add a second layer. If you feel it's necessary, I would suggest to let this dry for at least one hour 3. Pink Clouds, Purple Sky: in this section, I will be demonstrating how to lay down the colors for the pink and the purple for the sky , clouds and reflection in the water. If you are a beginner and do not have experience painting clouds and reflection in the water, I would highly suggest to take a screenshot of the finalized painting located in the project section. So that way you can use it as a reference to help you complete this painting. Sometimes having a reference picture to look at will give you a better idea of why different colors are laid in certain places. Now let's get started. I'm first going to be using my bubble gum pink color on my large square tipped brush. I'm going to be starting off about the middle of the top of the canvas and just doing patting motions to create the clouds. And just so you have some perspective, the top half of the canvas is going to be the sky. The bottom half of the canvas is going to be the water. So on this portion, my goal is to just create clouds and an overcast setting. I'm not using a whole lot of paint when I did my brush. And this is because I would like some of that negative space to kind of peek through whenever I'm patting my brush to give the illusion of a cloud. All I'm doing is I'm lightly patting the brush and creating kind of like a zigzag formation onto the canvas on the top portion. - This is about the part where the sky meets the water, so all the pink that were laying down on the bottom portion of the canvas is going to be all reflection of the water of the pink clouds on the top. What to keep in mind when we're doing the reflection on the bottom is that there's going to be more horizontal formation than there is puffy formation on the top. And like I said earlier in the video, please do not hesitate to take a look at the finalized painting toe look as a reference. So the patting motion is going to continue almost all the way until you get to the very bottom of the canvas and I'm going back up to the upper right hand corner and I'm adding a little pink cloud up here . So we're about done with this part. And remember, you can always go back and adjust anything to your liking. Next, I'm going to be using my lavender paint with the same brush to create the sky and to blend in the two colors together. The goal here is to apply the purple paint and leave a little bit of room in between the pink and the purple and then blend the pink and purple together. So as you can see, I'm applying the purple. And then I'm leaving a little bit of space in order to blend the two together in order to blend the two colors together. All I'm doing is taking my brush and going back and forth in between pink and purple until the two colors are blended together. Sometimes this could be a process, especially if you're paint is a little bit more dry. So a good idea is to do this whenever the paint is a little bit wet. A good tip is to remember not to rush the blending process. Sometimes it does take time, so just be patient. I'm done blending on this part and I'm cleaning my brush, so that way the pink doesn't transfer onto the purple paint, and now we're onto the next area, and here we're going to do the same thing. So we're going to apply the lavender paint, leaving a little bit of room in between the pink and the purple, and then we're gonna work on blending to the go Any time you're blending. It's always important to clean your brush often, so that way you don't transfer that other color onto the color that you're blending into. So here, after I clean my brush, I left a little bit of water onto the paint brush. So that way my paintbrushes nice and damp. And then I'm just switching between the two colors and padding in between them to blend the two colors together. And like I said earlier, sometimes you really have to work at the blending. It rents your brush off and keep getting a little bit of damp water onto the paint brush. So that way you can get the blend that you want. - This part. I had to really work at the blending, so I'm going to be holding up the pallet. So that way you could see which colors I'm dipping into because I had to do a lot of back of the fourth, and I had to also add more pink on the pink side of more powerful in the purple side. So that way my paints were wet. - I also wanted to mention Whenever you see me putting my paintbrush down, that means I'm rinsing off the brush. So I'm rinsing off the brush quite often and going back and forth between the two colors in order to get the blend that I want. - If you start to see that the white in the canvases kind of peeking through, this is actually a desirable effect whenever you're doing clouds, because it also adds dimension to your painting. So here I'm going to be going back into my pink and adding the pink onto that cloud on the upper right hand corner because that is already dry. So we need to go ahead and add some more paint so that would weaken. Blend that in and just like in the other sections of just rinsing my brush and going back in with a damp brush and going back and forth in between pink and purple in order to blend the two colors together. - So everything from here down is going to be all the water reflection. And we're going to be leaving a little bit open on the bottom portion. So we're not going to be putting the purple all the way down to the bottom. We're gonna leave about 1/4 of the bottom of the canvas open and on the bottom. We're going to be adding the blue to make the ocean. So on this bottom portion of the canvas, I really had to work at blending this really well because all of that other pink color is all dry. So I did have to go in and add more peeing gone to the pink side and really work at the blending and reds my brush off a law in order to get the blend toe work. - So I'm leaving the bottom quarter of the canvas open because we want to put that blue color in there in order to make the water. And then we're going to be blending the blue and the purple on the pink altogether. And don't worry, you can always go back and fix anything that you would like to correct. I actually had to do this. Whenever I completed this painting, I did have to go back and make some changes, so there's no worries. You can always change anything. 4. Water and ripples: in this section of going to be using a light blue color to create the ocean. And to do this, I'm going to be using my square tipped brush that I was using earlier to do the pink in the purple. And I'm going to be filling in where the white part is with the blue, leaving a little bit of room in between the purple and the blue and then going back in and blending those two colors together, going to be using the exact same technique that I used to blend the purple and pink together. Except this is going to be blue and pink. Make sure that you have a nice clean bowl of water. So that way the color doesn't transfer onto the pink in the blue. Since my pink color is pretty much all dry, you will see that I'm going back over with another coat of pink in order to get the blend that I need. And again, you will see here that I'm just patting the two colors together and going back and forth between blue and pink in order to blend them together. Since the blue transfers over to the pink very easily. It's very important that you're a rinsing your brush off very often and just remember to be patient and have fun as blending is a process, and it does take some working out right here. I'm going up the painting and just adding a little accents of blue to blend in with the purple to add some different color variations to the painting. Now it's time to move to the other side and fill in the rest of the white with the blue color. Since the pink is dry, I need to add some pink on here in order to blend the colors nicely. Here. I'm just rinsing my brush to get a little bit of water onto my paintbrush. In that way, it helps to blend the paint. - Now that we got the water completed, I'm just going to move the blue into the purple and also blended together and then add a little bit of blue accents and variations into the rest of the painting. - Now that we're done with the light blue in the water, I'm going to go ahead and add a little bit of ripples with dark navy blue. For this, I'm gonna be using a thin brush in order to make the ripples into the water. For this, all you need to do is make little lines and China to make them to spread apart, because we do need to blend them into the painting. After you've made your lines for the ripples on the water, go ahead and grab a larger brush and get in a little bit damp. Lightly. Go over the dark blue lines with your damp brush, and this will create a blended effect that will look like ripples in the water. If you happen to make a line that you don't like, you can always go over with the light blue. Or you can try to brush it off with damp brush. Remember to make a few lines at a time because you do want to work with the paint while it's still wet. As you can see, I have a ripple in the middle of the canvas to show where the water meets the sky. - Continue to use your dark blue to create lines, but remember to do them a little bit at a time. You can put as many or as little ripples and to your painting as you like. - I'm all done adding the lions to make the ripples, and I'm just going over with the brush to blend it even further. 5. Sun and reflection: in this section, I'm going to demonstrate how to do the sunset. First, we're gonna need to create a very light pastel yellow. In order to make the yellow, you're going to need a pretty good large dollop of the white color and then about three drops of the yellow. If you already have a bottle of premix to pastel yellow, you can, of course, use that as well. I'm also gonna be using a fine tipped brush or a brush that creates fine lines. After you have your color mixture together, you're going to go ahead and take your fine tipped brush and go to about the middle of the painting, and you can do this by hand. Or you can also use a ruler if you need to. But we're just going to make one thin line to go across the entire painting, and this line is to act as a separation of water and sky. After I've created the line, I'm going over the line again with the yellow to make it a little bit thicker. After you're done with the line, go ahead and grab a larger, thicker brush, and then you're going to make sure it's nice and clean and get it a little bit damp with your semi wet brush. You're just gonna do some brush strokes right underneath that thick line just to grab a little bit of coloration and kind of blend it through the bottom of that line. And, as you can see, that instantly creates the separation where the sky meets the water but also creates a little bit of reflection where the sun is going to be, and you're just gonna work on the blending to make it blend as much as you can until you're happy with it. After you're done with the blending, go ahead and grab a small round tip brush. Take that brush and go ahead and dip it in the yellow paint and pick a spot, and that's where you're going to create the sun. It's easier to start in smaller circles, and that way you can build your circle up to a larger circle. - Here . I'm just adding some horizontal lines across the sun, and this adds the sun rays reflecting off the sun during the sunset Here, I'm taking a damp brush and buffing everything out to blend it into the background. go ahead and switch to your large square tipped brush and we're going to start working on the reflection of the yellow into the clouds. I want to make sure that when you load your brush, there is only a teeny, tiny bit of paint on your brush. In this part, there really is a lot of freedom Whenever you're adding the yellow into the clouds, all I'm doing is I'm patting on the yellow very lightly onto the outside of the pink and then just making whatever formations that I want. The key is just to make sure that you're patting very lightly with your brush and make sure there's not a whole lot of paint on your brush. Also, you also want to make sure that you clean your brush often, so that way the yellow doesn't transfer where you don't want it to. Whenever you're happy about the placement of the yellow, you can go back and buff it out with a damp brush. That way it kind of gives it a blurred finish. - After I thought I was done, actually went back and made some more adjustments and add, it's a more yellow accents to the painting. This is where, like I said, you have a lot of freedom with the clouds because you can go back and you can add more or you can Azul esa's you want. I decided to go over some of the same spots with more yellow in This adds a little bit of a brighter highlight to the clouds. - Yeah , - the paint has dried on the sun, so I'm just adding another layer to make it even brighter. - After you're happy with how the sun looks, you're gonna go right underneath that and make some zigzags down the water in order to create the reflection of the sun onto the water. Please don't worry. If you think you've added too much yellow onto the water, you can always go back and layer purple and blue on top of it, which is something I ended up having to do myself 6. Islands, trees, and dolphin: we're nearing. And guys, we just need to grab our black paint and a fine tipped brush to create fine lines. And I'm going to demonstrate how to paint a little island on the left side and the right side along with a couple of trees. Since I'm working with black paint, I know it can be a little bit scary intimidating, but the key is just to put a little bit of pee on your brush and do small strokes with your brush and build and build and build on top of that. You can also feel free to sketch this out with a pencil. Just make sure that your other paint is nice and dry. Or you can use your fine tipped brush and sketch it out with their lighter color, like the yellow color as you can see. Like I said, I'm doing really small short strokes with the brush, and I also have very little of the black paint on my brush. You can always build on top of that when you're using black paint, you really want to make sure that your paintbrush is nice and dry, so that way you're paint does not run across the canvas. As you can see here, I made my island small and all I'm doing is I'm making it longer by creeping the line a little bit further to the right and keep in mind, very little pain is being used. Right now. You can always build on top of the black. - The base of the island is done on the left side. Now we're going to move over to the right side and do the same thing. As you can see. I'm starting out with just a line and then I'm building on top of that, making it a little bit thicker and forming the shape that I want for the island. It really is up to you what you want your island to look like. There's really no right or wrong way to do this. Now it's time to make the palm trees an easy way to start. Making the palm trees is just to start by making the tree trunks, and all I did was make one curved line for the tree and central gonna have to palm trees. All I have to do is create another curved line right next to my odor tree trunk and to create the bushes on the bottom of the tree. All I'm doing is adding little spikes on the bottom to make it look like a bush. I'm gonna go ahead and move on to the other side and repeat the same process, starting with two curved lines and then the little spikes on the bottom to create the bushes moving on to the palm tree leaves. You could feel free to make this however you like. But one way I'd like to think of creating the palm trees is to think of insect legs. An insect has six legs so you can make six leaves on your palm tree. Start out making your leaves then and then you can build on top of that. If you would like to make them thicker now on to the right side, we're going to go ahead and repeat the same process that we did on the left side, on the right side. You. Now that the palm trees are complete, I'm going to go ahead and demonstrate how I created the Dolphin. Since we are working with black pain, I did use the yellow color to sketch out the outline of the dolphin. You want to start by going to the middle of the canvas and start sketching out a curved line similar to the shape of a banana. Make sure that the paint underneath is perfectly dry before you start sketching. Once I had my outline down, I went ahead and I dipped into the black paint and I started painting on top of it. I had very little paint on my brush and used very, very small strokes. If you feel like you made a mistake with the black paint, you can always use a damp washcloths and wipe it away before the paint dries. All right, and we're just about done. Thank you so much. 7. last details : included this video just to show that I added a little bit more detail onto the painting just to finish it up. I mentioned in the video while I was doing the sun that I did at a little bit of more detail over the yellow reflection on the water. I also put another layer of yellow on the sun. I wanted to include this video to show that you can always add more to your painting.
