1. Intro & Supplies: watercolor wizards harsher here. I'm a former university professor, and you might know me for my channel of water cooler and was re on YouTube and patri on where issue art history, art, creation and instruction in watercolor, wash and ink. Today I'll be showing seven ways to use watercolor pencil and then demo ing some of these techniques in a whimsical illustration. Thanks for perfect rushes here and lengthy epic painting adventures begin. I'll be sharing a condensed version of this demo on YouTube. If you want to see a close to real time version at a leisurely pace with lost more information and instruction, you can find it on skill share. Private free passes toe all my skill short tutorials, along with other info dense. Our posts are always available for my patron's own patriotic. As far as supplies go. For this project, I use an HB pencil and softy racer, a synthetic quarter inch angled brush a size for a round brush with a fine point. A quadruple zero spotter brushed for tiny details as needed. A cloth towel, which is a green reusable option for dabbing water and paint a water cup with clean water. Make sure you have to water wells, one for rinsing money brushes and the other with clean water for a wedding and diluting. Paint a small spray bottle or water dropper or pipe that a paint mixing palette. I prefer porcelain or metal pallets, watercolor pencils in your colors and brand of choice. I'm using Albert Juror Faber Castell Watercolor pencils for convenience. You can also have a white watercolor pencil or white gel pen or whitewash paint for highlights and corrections. I wouldn't suggest white acrylic or oil paint as they won't play well with water colors. You can't use watercolor over either of them, so that could be tricky to involve in a watercolor piece. You don't plan on having pencils that are permanently dull. Pencil Sharper is going to be handy and also optionally a small Exacto night. You'll need a piece of card stock or cheaper watercolor paper to first create a watercolor pencil techniques. My sketch transfer and freehand drawing process are not covered here, but all that's available for free on YouTube and some of my videos. 2. What are Watercolor Pencils?: watercolor pencils are basically color pencils with a magical secret. They look like regular color pencils, but their colors are soluble wen wet for lovely watercolor effects. So they're more wizard wander than an average color pencil. Choosing a brand for quality and affordability is up to you, a personal choice, and there are many kinds out there. I personally only have a set of 12 and several extra open stock solo pencils from the brand . I heard the best things about which was Albert Juror Faber Castell watercolor pencils. The's pencils are a light, fast, robust artist grade pencils with soft leads and brilliant colors. The watercolor pencils can be used for any water coloring. I found their small plates a bit of a hassle for larger paintings, so I wouldn't personally recommend them for a large painting, except for details and fine lines. But for small and many paintings, these pencils will be more controlled than a brush for beginning or intermediate painters for small art. Watercolor pencils are also about the same level of efficiency of paint, delivery and brushstroke size as a small brush. So small art is really where they shine, knowing a tool strengths and limitations as part of mastering the use of it. And this is just is true for watercolor pencils as anything else. Therefore, it's helpful to know that there are particularly useful for miniature painting or thumbnails, or for adding lines, dots or other small details that might be daunting with the paintbrush. And due to their compact nature and diverse methods of use, they are terrific in travel tins or mobile watercolor kits. My current travel watercolor bag has Onley watercolor pencils as by divers. Travel color media. 3. 7 Ways of Using Watercolor Pencils!: I hope youll find their diversity of water clear pencils useful for travel or tiny paintings as well. So without further ado, let's get to my seven ways of using watercolor pencils. Number one dry. This is just using your watercolor pencil incognito as a color pencil color with it dry on dry paper to create a conventional color pencil drawing. The textures can be prominent with translucent dry application and more smooth looking with opaque, dry pencil application. You can also use dry lines to add details to a watercolor piece that would be harder with a brush like electric power lines, ship rigging eyelashes, small highlights for edges and more dry pencil lines can also be used as contour lines, defectors stippling, hatching and cross hatching to replace Inc marker or dry brush lines when used to last. Dry lines are also particularly useful if you have exhausted the finish of a watercolor paper and it will no longer hold a fine wet line or edge. Then a fine wet paint line can be replaced with a dry fine line in watercolor council. Instead, number two dry than wet it first draw in color with your counsel dry on dry paper, then go back over the colored areas with a brush wet with clean water. The colors will saturate and move, creating a watercolor effect. This technique reminds me of those color by number coloring books. We saw his kids. They needed a single wet water brushed to release different colors, preset in different areas. When you're using your pencils like this, make sure your rinse between different color sections as needed so that your colors don't contaminate each other and turn to mud. Also, pressure is important here, both in the coloring and in the brushing stages. If you apply more pressure will a coloring more texture of the pencil will remain even after the color is wet with a brush. Less pressure and less textured paper will result in less pencil texture remaining after wedding. Also, if you use a light hand with your paintbrush, the colors will saturate and only slide around a little bit. If you press harder, use describing motion. The color's gonna move more or even lift. Doing this a lot will dilute the color to almost nothing for certain colors and papers. Be mindful of what you want to achieve, engage your pencil and brush pressure accordingly. Typically, dry pencil application first will always leave some amount of pencil texture on the paper. Number three Pencil Sandy. Rob your pencil against some sandpaper to generate fine flakes or against a razor blade for bigger flakes of color. I prefer shaving flakes with the blade, since none of the color is wasted on the sandpaper and the flakes air just a bit larger and more prominent. Do this over wet paper and your flakes will fall into the water and create lovely burst of color. Depending on how wet your paper is and how small or large or color flakes are, you will get varied color burger sizes and intensities for a different look. If you drop flakes onto dry paper and then come back and spray with a water bottle, your color is going to be more diluted and messy in a spatter effect. Color bursts are great in backgrounds, abstract pieces or to add texture in any passage of a larger paying pencil. Sanding or shaving is a good technique to replace salt burst. If you don't like putting salt on your paper, and it's also good to replace dive based brush or powder color birds with your light fast watercolor pencil pigment. If you want larger and more color dense burst of sprinkled color, you can save your pencil shavings, which are larger than sanding or razor flakes, and use those in a sprinkling technique instead. Number four. What and wet drawing. I really love this one. It's applying a dry watercolor pencil onto wet paper, Whether it's dots, lines, scribbles or larger areas of shading. The results are soft, fluffy actors with various levels of unpredictability. The more wet your paper is, the more spontaneously your color will bleed and spread and vice versa. You're bleeds, and blooms can be further encouraged to grow and spread. If you're brushing or Stempel more water over your wet paper and watercolor pencil marks. It's a lovely technique to emulate Impressionist painting. Styles of pointillism and chrome alumina resume for vibrating optically mixed colors. Number five Palette pain. You've seen me do this a lot. I often end up using my watercolor pencils as conventional watercolor paint For a large, convenient color portions. You can simply cut, break or shave color flakes with the razor or sharpener from the pencils and drop those into palette wells. Then just use your paint conventionally from your palate with a wet paintbrush, just like you would to paint or pan pain. Just like any other watercolor, you can apply this. Paint wet paint on dry paper for hard edges, wet paint on dry paper with a blended or Grady in edge or wet paint on wet paper for blooms and soft edges. What on what techniques can be in water or in a wet paint glaze. You can also color pencils, watches onto a piece of paper with your pencils to make a fast, impromptu palette. Use wax paper or a plastic film because some of the paint will just be wasted through absorption if you use a poorest paper, but I don't use this method at all. For a palate, paint transforms as it's a pretty laborious way to get decent color portions from a pencil , so I just prefer to shave or cut pencil color off into a palette. Number six. Dip and draw Dave your pencils tip in water and then draw with it on dry paper. The result is gonna be a fuzzy line, but still with some spread control since the paper itself is dry. Any line that needs a fuzzy edge but doesn't spread too far is a suitable candidate for this method. If you love to use this method, then don't press too hard. The color pencil core is going to be pretty soft. And don't if the pencil past the color part that's visible so you don't weaken the rest of the wood shaft of your pencil. You can get some really cool, fuzzy and dry brush type texture lines with this, so it's really nice for certain textural effects. Number seven, Dabbing the pencil and paint. Lastly, I have one of my patrons, Diane, I think, to thank for the comment, adding that these pencils can also be just dabbed at directly with a wet brush to get a fast brush load of color. I don't use that much myself, cause I so hone in to just getting color off of a palette. But this is definitely a useful addition to the watercolor pencil techniques list, especially if you're traveling with these pencils 4. Palette and Color Wheel Swatches: And remember, all seven of these methods can be layered with each other or on their own for various degrees of color intensity, darker values or texture. Variation. Before even began my illustration, I'll have the chance to show how watercolor pencils can be transformed into palette paint. Well, I also discussed my color palette in color mixes for the project demo. So I'm saving and sprinkling the color pigment shavings. Well, I sharpen my pencils into a palette. This happens every time a pencil sharpener anyway, so you might as well keep the shedded color while you keep your pencils nice and pointy, especially when you're buying pencils. As expensive as these ones makes you feel like you're using every last bit of the color mole using four pencils for my artwork today. Since I like to work in a limited palate and these colors are yellow, light green, they little blue and deep scarlet red. Shifting the palate paint is a nice versatility that watercolor pencils offer. If you are traveling with them or don't want to pull other paints out, they can be used dry or wet right off of a palette to then larger color areas. and areas that need to be smooth and texture free can be painted easily, with no need for extra products. Though color Maxine can also be done by overlapping colors on the paper dry or mingling them on the paper well wet. The palate pain option makes mixing new colors or intermediate colors and bigger batches much easier. So here I'm creating a full spectrum of 12 colors using my four pencils. Because three of my pencils are a primary triad of red, yellow and blue to begin with, and thus I can create orange, green and violet secondaries. And then the tertiary mixes between those as well. I have a separate light green pencil to get me a faster yellow green color. The man who's more of that color. But I could have chosen to just makes a yellow green tertiary color using a lot of the yellow and a bit of the blue pencil colors. Instead, watercolor pencil paint is going to be a bit wax here and with a tendency to lift a bit more than conventional watercolor paint. And I can feel that even as I mix up the colors on the palette, they feel a bit more like lotion than normal water color paint. The pain in these watercolor pencils still glaze as well and layers well in a quality brand like the one that I have. But it will still be a bit different in handling and formula than traditional pan or to watercolors. And here I'm getting very vibrant, silky, slightly waxy mixes with these pencils. And like I've done with my limited color schemes for a decade, I'm gonna put my colors on a color wheel. And I'll actually draw in the four pure pencil colors while they're dry on the paper and then come back and with them later, because I can do that because he exists as pencils and then I'll dab in the other eight color mixes from the palate. If you do color wheels for the limited color schemes for most of the paintings you dio, you'll eventually filled up an informative library of color wheels that she can flip through to assess and compare color, moods, intensities and ranges of various color scheme. So it's a really useful thing to Dio. I like to see all the colors I'm using and the mixes that they create with each other in one space, like having a color key or color menu. And I just have to browse this manual a paint and pick what I want as appetizer accent colors and which I want as dominant main course colors and what I want to subordinate desert colors. And maybe that's why color palettes and color wheels looks so yummy to me. You can draw a circle with a compass and quit distantly placed 12 slots around the circumference to just create a color wheel, which I have done for years. Or you can use color real stencils like the one I have here, which I purchased recently from Zen Daudi on etc. And I ended up putting a fast shot of neutral Brown's made for mixing all of the colors in the centre, though for this painting I will be using many neutrals. It will be mostly a clean, high chroma spectral color scheme like I've ended up utilizing and several other pieces where I want the mood to be uplifting, whimsical and fantastical. But it is good to see the orangey mixes and blue mingling to create warm browns and blue grays, because I am going to make use of those two compliments to create a more subdued goat hair color 5. Goat Demo, 1/3: Now it's time to get my goat going while using some of the seven different watercolor pencil techniques I detailed earlier. So sit back and watch and listen, and hopefully we'll learn a bit more for my watercolor pencil adventures today. And you could also paint along if you're a patron. My original goat sketch and my permission to utilize it for personal use is available for patrons. The major takeaways of this tutorial are the seven techniques I shared earlier and not a specific project, so you can apply them to any artwork you come up with yourself. What's more important is that you make a little watercolor pencil techniques card, so you know how you can use these watercolor pencils in the future. So moving on, I'm gonna start my drawing and the blue based color for that goat here, and it's gonna go in dry with the blue pencil. Then I'm gonna come back later with a brush with Justin, clean water in it and wet that color again. This feels like such a joyful revealed to me. I can't stop associating it with those magical color released coloring books that I saw in stores as a kid but never got by because my mom didn't approve of lazy coloring books that had half of the coloring work done for you already. Well, I guess I finally get to scratch that itch, and I'm getting to create my own color release lines and then just to use water to activate that color and change that look magically from dry pencil color to a wet painted look. Some of the textural effects of the pencil will remain if I don't press hard to smooth them out. As I was saying before, that might be useful if you want some texture and definitely here I'm leaving some texture because I like that feathery skipping texture now and again that is giving the strokes amore hair like appearance way . - Second color I'm gonna use in the goats. Hair is a warm, orangey brown, mixed starting with the Mosul area, which is mainly the nostrils and lips indentation shadows here. The warm brown that I've using is mixed from the red and blue pencil colors, with a higher ratio of the red to keep it warm and orangish. Since orange is the complement of the blue, it's going to harmonize wonderfully with that blue when it's next to it. And when I lay it into the for lines with my brush, I'm gonna get more orange, brown or more neutral, cooler brown, depending on how much it overlaps with my earlier blue lines, did the I, mostly in the darker brown so that it stands up in darker value. Contrast against the dominant surrounding blue hair color and a merry go round goat didn't have an accurate goat. I, because guys are actually all belong, not round pupils. But luckily, I used to own pure bred goats for landscaping and as pets in a rural house location. So I knew how to correct the pupil and make it like a real go. - It also gave the goat a yellow orange iris color on what highlights on top of that, using the white Joe Penn and that white Joe Penn is basically just white Wash paint in a step, and you can use a white color pencil here or white paint and a brush. It's totally up to you. I had the white jumping around, so it's convenient to use that any of these areas I want a wet the blue pencil lines first and then come back in a second layer with the orange brown. I don't want to get muddy colors by just activating both colors at the same time. This might be a good idea for some designs and some illustrations. But for what I desire in this painting, I definitely want a cleaner color look and whether I'm drawing in the dry blue lines, wedding the drive blue lines or adding in the brown paint mixed with a brush. All of my pencil and brush strokes are gonna follow the vector and path of the hair strokes and all those gentle s shapes along the goats contours. I can't be sloppy and just put them in straight or in any random direction. They have to follow how the goat hair is naturally falling around the body for it to look right. And I've done complementary colors as warm vs cool shadow, toning on a white base color before, as I've discovered it, to be very effective and visually interesting. And you can see that I also did it for a moo ha incline and watch study on YouTube, where I took a white shirt and used complimentary yellow and purple to give it some interesting shadows, just as I chose to create white for not with neutral gray shadows but with blue and orange to give it more liveliness via color diversity. I also chose to do the horns along with the hose and the light lime green type color, so would be more fantastical. I have the green color and the blue green color mix on my palette, and I want a smoother, elects textured application in the hair. So I'm going to be using the paints directly from the palate. And this is gonna happen any time. I have a larger color area, or when I want smooth color application as I can. Just use the color right from the power, and I'm gonna be applying this paint what on dry with soft blended edges. And that's also gonna happen a lot for this piece because I want control in these smaller areas. And if I want any soft edges like and blend them with a damp brush, - last , I'm gonna come back with the white for extra bright highlight ridges on the way. The decoration on the bridal includes inset gems isn't it's a really super teeny space. This is another opportunity to switch back to the pencil and apply it dry and dense for the base junk color. I'm gonna follow that up with my smallest brush for dry brush blue green accents in the gems. Because that blue green is a mix between two pencils and doesn't exist in a direct single pencil color way. Last jobs also get the white pen highlights. Good to have that white color around, because I may use it a lot for highlights in this piece, and it really works well for smaller pieces to do that vs saving the white part of the paper because sometimes it's just not very easy and efficient to save the white of the paper in such a small painting. And so when I do the red for the leather part of the bridal, it's also went on dry paint application for my palate. Since I've muted that red down a bit from the pure pencil red color 6. Goat Demo, 2/3: And then I muted it down even further with blue to make kind of a purple, he read mix for the bridles shadow areas. The shadow areas have a soft blended edge achieved again with a damp, clean brush run along the edge of the needs to be softened. - Then I felt that the major red color on the bridal needed sprucing up with another layer. So come back in with another layer of red. And finally we get our white highlights for final contrast and also to imply decoration in Boston, the red leather of the bridle. And this works really well. If I staple in my design and don't draw it into solid, chunky, clunky white lines. By doing the stippling, I get a nice Lacey delicate effect. The little middle ring for the bridal will make use of the drive pencil again. I do follow up with orange paint from the palate as a shadow and also the white Joe Penn for highlight, and I'm gonna use these three color application method does layers over and over again throughout this painting, especially for the decorative parts of the saddle and bridle. I didn't end up spattering or sprinkling any pencil shavings anywhere for this painting, and that's too bad because I really like that effect. But that can easily be done in the background or foreground, for any peace as desired for more texture and back to finishing up the hair, starting as before with Dr Blue pencil strokes. And these will also be wedded later with a brush with just some water in it. And then contrast ID with a layer of warm brown mixed from the palace. As before again, my pencil strokes and brush drugs follow the shaggy hair vectors and the muscular contours along this goat, and not just being a single stilted direction or in any old, random direction. And I might speed up just the hair drawing and painting part of it more as you guys and cows of seeing that earlier at a decently slow speed for a while. And you know exactly how I'm going to do all of this code here. And I don't want you guys to get bored. He is braced for this painting was a merry go round featuring various animals at the Happy Hollow Zoo, which I visited for the first time with two other artists and fellow YouTubers, Denise and Jennifer. And it's into this all the sweet goat among the Minaj array and the merry go round. I knew I was gonna between my own rendition of him sometime. I did change the horn and hoof colors and hair colors to make them were interesting to me than the white and gray for, or their brown horns and hooves. And I also tweak the bridle and saddle colors a bit to make them more in line with my limited color scheme and my dominant color choices. So feel free to change colors. However you wish. If you're working from life or from a photo reference its artistic license, and it usually makes the subject more fascinating and beautiful toe have creative colors. - Hopes were mostly dry pencil applying first, then wedded to soften and intensify the color, followed by a bit of shadow blue green from the palate and white pen highlights as needed, very similar to the horns, which are the same color and texture as the hopes. I did the last two halves later and not directly after the first to host, but I did edit them into this part of the video so that all four of the hose air appearing together for a better video organization. So don't be alarmed if you see the second pair of hose disappear and then reappear later. You're not going crazy. It's just this video editing now on to the brown mixed layer for the hair, and it will be nice to have the hair all done so I can get to the more colorful and fun saddle part. Check for a balance of blue and brown so it looks pleasing. You don't want to have something looking like it's off kilter because there's too much or too little of one color, - and you notice that further rear, hind, leg and part of the torso. I do apply more brown color to indicate larger degrees of shadow through that darker value way, and I started the saddle area with some of the teal mix from the palate colors to create ribbons wet on dry with damp lended edges in the inner fault way around the gems and the teal ribbon like I did for the bridal area. But they got a little bit small, and I'm gonna show later that I can make these white areas larger with the white pen, which is a nice, handy trick to know for small spaces. 7. Goat Demo, 3/3: riven tales have a bit of undulation to them, with a slight rippling effect. And that's indicated with lighter and darker value breaks and my teal color application. If you want to understand how I paint fabric ribbons through more examples, you can also check out my ornaments. Video for my ribbon 80 sees video, which are both free and public on YouTube. In this case, just like with the larger ribbons, is going to be lighter centers of the raven areas with darker edges as a ribbons full downward and away, whether they're in bows or not way that I can come back and make the jump stone areas larger with the white gel pen. As like I was saying before, they got a bit too small, and you can see that I could go right over that area with my dry pencil color and at smaller highlights or shadow areas over that. And the decoration on the ribbon is done with the same lovely Lacey's deploying effect does before, and likewise, the second metal ring has the same yellow base or in shadow and white highlights as a first rate. In a small painting like this, It's not that much space to cover. And there aren't any areas here where you wanna have less controlled wet and wet color blooms and effects, which is why you keep seeing me resort to the more controlled wet on dry paint application . So if you're doing any of your paintings at a larger size, feel free to also incorporate wedding wet color blooms where the color spread and go in abstract directions. Working on the major central portion of the saddle, I made easier to paint by just covering the whole center with the red paint and not painting around the white areas where gemstones we're gonna go later. I wanted to show that she could work around them and also that you could add them in later , over top. So now that I've shown you both, I'm just gonna do the easier way and add them in over top the way. French on the saddle had three stages. The base color the shadow on the highlights, which actually happens for all of the little decorative sections on the bridle and saddle with the fringe. It was the old base color and the orange mid shadows in a wet on dry applications. Second green. Darker French shadows. Would you drew in with a pencil into the damp yellow and orange base to get those soft lines on some fringe edges? - Wear white highlights to add more dimension and value contrast to the fringe threat. - I'm gonna come back into dab in the white pen for the gem areas and color over them with little decorated, stippled white designs back. And I'm going to use it all around these stones on the saddle, too. And it's problem in my favorite part of doing the decoration. Think it really made the saddle in the ribbons in the bridal so much more fancy with just that little white design detail. Kind of cool and magical. How that dry watercolor pencil covers right over that white pain in that small area and lets me have a clean gemstone. Color is not polluted by the red that's underneath that white now. This is not gonna work as cleanly or smoothly for a larger area, but for the smallest circular stones and little corrections the pencil is finding. Covering white paint I think I have left are the stylized leaves and flowers, and they're pretty simply done by using the relevant colors right from the palate, wet on dry and coming back with the white pen last for highlights. Same technique as the other details. Sections on the saddle and bridle For this painting, let yourself have something local less realistic if it's a design element. So I just sort of confused reviewer anyway, because then they don't know if it's a design leaf in a flower or really leaves and flowers that have been tacked onto the saddle there. So I think it's perfectly OK. Toe leave those very stylized and simple way on that's gonna wrap up my little whimsical goat. I'm planning on cutting the paper out in a circle to have around final painting to make it more fun.
