About This Class

Designing brushes in Procreate is fun and easy, how about learning new ways to use them for some amazing results?

Wether you are a beginner or already familiar with the process, I will show you various styles and effects that you can create from some basic drawings.

The theme of my brushes is Japanese motifs but you can apply these methods to any subject, from simple geometrical shapes to more elaborate artwork.

We will draw one shape after another, and for each of them I will show you a different way to use your brush, depending on the style of your project.

The possibilities are endless and a lot of fun, and with your own brushes you can easily design wonderful patterns or even sell them on platforms like Creative Market.

1. Presentation: Hi, everyone. My name is something. I'm an artist, and in this class we show you six ways to design your own appropriate brushes. Whether you're already familiar with designing brushes in procreate or completely new to the subject, you will discover techniques and ideas, but I am sure will take your designs to a new level. I have chosen a Japanese seem to illustrate my techniques, but you can, of course, create any type of rushes. In this way, we will create a different type of brush in each lesson, going from basic designs to more elaborate ones. Are you ready? Let's stop. 2. Resources: you will find in the class description to links one toe what I call my papers library that you might have used already if you took my other procreate class. The second link will give you access to some Japanese patterns, mostly kimono for breaks that I have saved for this class and that you can also use if you wish, You will also find their square greed, which is very useful when designing brushes, a grayscale and a gold texture. Now that we are equipped, we can start. 3. Layering: to design a brushes. We will open a square canvas off 2048 by 2048 pixels. Then we will import a square greed and enlarge it until it fits perfectly into a canvas. You can either draw your brush freely or trace it from a photo. I would start by importing this image off territory flowers lower its opacity and place the flower that I will trace right in the middle of my canvas. Once you have positioned your mother, you can make the greed layer invisible. Don't forget to look your photo layer and to create a new layer for your sketch. I now select the technical pen brush. It doesn't matter too much if you follow the model Exactly or not, it's more important to get natural looking lines. Once you are done, you can delete the photo and correct the small imperfections off your sketch. You can even add your own details or change a few things until you're happy with the look off the drawing. The next step is to save the image as a J peg in your photo library. Then we will go to the Brushes collection and press that little plus sign on the top right toe. Open a blank brush template. Here. We need to select two elements. The shape of the brush and its grain, which is basically the support on which its originally printed. So as for the shape, we will select the inset photo option and select our territory Flower sketch. As you can see, it, is now showing in the shape source preview. As for the grain source, we will select the swept from pro Ribery, which will open pro creates library of textures. Feel free to experiment with various types of textures, but if you're a beginner, it's a lot easier to stick to the square shaped grains. I will just use a basic blunk texture, which is like a white sheet of paper. What you see in your brush preview is the opposite off what you will get on your canvas. Next, we will press stroke at the bottom of the screen and increase the spacing off the brush at 64%. This is what you will get a great tool for borders are littering. For example, remember that you can change your brushes settings at any time according to your needs. I will set the spacing to the maximum in this case because I only need one flower at the time. If you have created the brush in another set, just drag it to the new one until you see a small green plus sign appear. I am now going to match my black flower, the golden background and a layer mask into one layer. But at this point we need to do something. We will add a black background to our canvas because, although it is easy to forget it when working on a white page, we need to feel our petters with white before adding more color. So we will go on automatic selection mode, select the inside off the flour and simply pulled the white color on the top right into our shape. Would you have not done thes? You would have ended up with a flower like the one under left as soon as you would have changed your background. Next, we will look our flour and create a layer on top for the other colors. I picked a pink color and I chose from the elements, said the clouds brush at low capacity. I now go back to my flower and selected on automatic mode and switching to the upper layer . I will start adding light shades of pink to the white betters. I will use the same process to paint the piss tres, select them in the flower layer, then choose my color and brush and paint them on the new layer. Now I want to merge the white betters and the yellow piece stirs into one layer. But I also want to keep the white flour as it is. So I duplicated and merge the new layer with the Pistor. Now, as we can see, if we duplicate the layer off pink, we will get a darker shade and even darker once if we duplicate it again and again. In this case, I will keep three layers of pink because this is a darkest shape that I want. What we will do now is to create three prototypes off flower each a different shade of pink . For the 1st 1 we will duplicate the white flour and merge it with one layer of pink. If you move it the side, you will see it. You can give you the name. It always helps to stay organized For the 2nd 1 I proceeding exactly the same way. Deprecate the white flour that I will merge with two layers off pink. This time, remember to deprecate one pink layer before merging toe Have one left. For the third flower, I will merge one white flour and three pink layers. I always keep a locked, invisible copy off all the elements that compose motive at the bottle of my layers for further use. Now that you have a prototype off each flower, you can duplicate them and use them as you wish. 4. Stencil: for our second breast style. Ah, willing set a new photo and place the chrysanthemum flower that I want to trace right in the middle of my canvas. We look the photo layer and create a new layer on top. Again, I will trace the bettors of the flower with a black technical pen, depending on what kind of brushes you'd like to create. This process can be very quick or a bit longer. I will show you at the end of the class if you have the brushes that I have created that took me a while to design, especially a Chinese pagoda that I traced from a China plate. Most of the photos I will use here are actually kimono fabrics, which is the style I am interested in. So the designs are not too complicated. So once you're sketch is all nice and clean, just save it in your library and open your set off homemade brushes. I would create this new brush from scratch, but you could also deprecate the previous one and simply change the shape source as I will show you later. Let's invert our shape, increase the spacing level and the brush size and switch on stamp preview. And he were. We have basic flower brush that we can use in various ways. I will pick some goals tone from the charity flour for the Leinart. Before coloring the chrysanthemum, I will use a pilot similar to the kimono fabric for the original flower. For this brush, I need to keep the line out and the color's completely separated. So I looked the drawing layer tow. Avoid painting on me and place a new layer on top. I do not feel the flower with white first because I want to keep some transparency. You have different options that will allow you to change the colors of your subject. Let's first try the hue, saturation and brightness option by moving the cursor along the hue line. You can choose a color scheme that you like, and they're so modify it with the saturation and brightness taps. I know that I can spend a lot of time playing with this cursors, but let's keep to the point and reset our image. So from these original colors, I will goto what a green hue that results in lovely pink, purple and blue tones. Again, if you duplicate the layer, you will get a more vibrant palette. It's always worth checking and merging the two layers if you like. The result. I am now deprecating the original group again, and this time I will open the color balance. Stop off the adjustments, and here you get even more options and taps to play with. As you can select, which turns you wish to modify highlights, meters or shadows. You need to experiment with each of them to see what part exactly are changing when you select one off these and then it is again playtime until you find a combination that you like. This time I will go for these blue and green tones. Finally, a duplicate my original group one last time to experiment with the re color option and see how my whole flower immediately turns blue because it was a selected color in my palette. If you keep the tab open, you can just select colors from your palate to test the values possibilities. It's very quick and easy. I will keep the yellow chrysanthemum, which also looks lovely, with a traditional golden outline for each flower. I will duplicate the color layer and move it aside, then merge, drawing with the cooler layers like these. I have not fought but eight variations on this subject. Four colors in two styles, stencil and traditional. 5. Grey gradient: This time we will choose a plan flower. To illustrate the Greg Radiance technique, you will need the great palette that I mentioned at the beginning of the class. For this method, you can either create the palate with the photo from my library. Or you can search a great Grady in photo online and bring it in to procreate. Then just speak every shade of gray from the photo and added to your palate. And all we need to do is to color the petters in the heart in two different shades of gray , then savory Mitch creating you brush using this photo as a shape source and whatever texture you like for the grain, I will stick to blank to keep the same style for all these brushes. Once you have gone through all the usual steps and have inverted your shape, you can experiment with your brush in various colors. As you can see, the darker grey translates into a darker shade off the color than the lighter one in the heart. If we now give the flower light, grey, Petters and a dark grey heart and create a new brush by duplicating the 1st 1 and just changing the photo in the shape source. You can see that we get the opposite off the first flower. This is a simple example, but you can use this grayscale for any type off brushes like I did with his dragon fly or this leaf, for example. Even a chrysanthemum can get a new look. With this technique, we just select each runoff better separately and cholera it with a different gray. Check on a black background that all is painted and create a brush from this image, and you get yet another style of chrysanthemum. Finally, one last deep. If you wish to use this technique with the stencil type brush, just put the great tones on the separate layer, as we did in the previous lesson. Then delete the Leinart and save your image. Create your brush as usual and enjoy the result. You can also deprecate the brush and change the grain source to see the different effects. This is with recycled paper grain, and remember that if it's dark in the preview, some nail it will be light on your canvas to correct these. Just invite the grain, the rest grain, for example. We look like thes and the wet paper grain like this. There are many textures to try and the procreate library. But you can also use any of your photos as a grain. This is a whole other class, too. This is the one that matches the rest of my chrysanthemums collection. 6. Patterned brushes: The next brush we will create is a brush filled with the pattern, and I will use a traditional pine tree designed to demonstrate the technique. You already know how to create a basic brush by now. So instead of describing what I am doing, I will tell you the symbolic meaning off this tree. In Japanese culture, the pine tree symbolizes virtue and long life, even immortality. And the Japanese name for it is Matsu, which means waiting for the soul off a goat to descend from heaven, A very spiritually and poetic name for beautiful tree. Once your brushes ready, you can import any button or texture you liking to procreate, and I will show you how to create a more detailed brush. But before we start, unless you'd like to keep some transparency in your brush, we need to feel our tree with white and tested against a black background. Now we're ready to work with our pattern layer. First, we will lower its opacity and resize it to cover the tree without the flowers being too big . Then we will go to our tree shape layer and use the automatic selection tool to select the top part off the tree, then back to the pattern layer to create a mask. If I doubt saved the image and duplicate your original pine tree brush to create a new one with this photo as a source, if you test your brush, this is what you will get as it stands right now. Unfortunately, it is not possible to design carload brushes in procreate, but here is how we can fix this. We will use the automatic selection tool once again to select the upper part of the tree and cholera it with the color off our choice. If, for some reason your pattern does not show through, just switch the blending mode to multiply or darken. We can also select the branches and color them in this way to get different colors. Just replicate this layer and play with the adjustments options, as we have seen before. You can also change the outline off the tree by selecting a new color for your brush, then painting the pattern as before. Another option you can try is to use our girls texture on the trees branches. I would not try different patterns to show you VIAS effects once again The possibilities are endless, and you could easily create a whole pattern just with bank trees. These are a few of mine. 7. Brushes into brushes: for this new brush type, I will show you two ways to use your previous brushes to create a new one. Let's first create a plane fan brush. Let me tell you about the symbolism of fans as I create the brush hand. Fans are an important symbol in Japan. Japanese people believe that the handle of the fan symbolizes the beginning off life, and the ribs represent the roads off life, going out in all directions to bring good fortune and happiness. The designs covering the fun itself all have specific meanings, and many convey messages to those who know how to read the symbols. So our hand brush is ready, and I will first show you how to create a few beautiful designs. I will start by turning the black outline into a golden color with the usual mask technique . I will duplicate it to be able to reuse it later. Then I will select the fun panel and painted in a teal color, and now it is time to decorate the fan with the plums and christened. Remember, she's in the same way. I have designed this purple Charity fan and this red pine tree one they are not brushes a search, but they are extremely easy and friend to create and would look lovely as part of a pattern . For example, now the second way to use what I call the brushes into brushes. Technique is the following. First of all, use your fund brush in black at maximum capacity and in the large size you will then select the panel off your fan and painted white. Check it on a black background and now you can start. I will first peek my plum toe brush, then select the front panel and use the brush in black with a medium spacing following the shape of the fan. You might have to do these a few times to get the sizes and position right, but you can have some of the flowers independently with the free hand selection tool. Next, I will create a new layer and this time use my new pine tree brush. The reason why I need a new layer is because it makes it much easier to select and move things around. I will deprecate my pine tree and then once again trying to place them harmoniously between the plum flowers. Finally, I will go back to the original layer and select the panel again. This time I will use my secure a transparent brush toe at lighted tales. No, we're ready to save our image. You can duplicate any other brush to create a new one. With this image as a source, I know the process is a bit long, but stay with me because it really is worth it. Let's check out our brush as it is right now. In blue, for example, it is lovely. I will also tried in pink just to see but stay with me a bit longer because the best part is now I will make a black stamp and import my gold paper that I will position on top of the fan. Then on the front layer, I will use the automatic selection tool to select all the planners a face and going back to the gold. Earlier, I will create a mask, bring the girl to maximum capacity and now comes the Magic Select multiply as blending mode . I hope that you like it. I have to say that I got very excited when my experiments led me to these. You can create a group with the three layers and replicated to experiment with other blending modes if you like. I personally loved the light and mode, with its rose gold tones and the different smote for its gold and ultra marine colors. Once again, you can adapt his technique 20 subject with other designs or textures as you like. 8. Magic eraser: our last brush will be a fun, an easy one that you can create in one minute and which looks great. For thes example, I will choose a beautiful crane, which is a symbol of longevity and good luck in Japanese culture as they are thought to leave for 1000 years. Once I have traced my crane, I saved the drawing and create a brush with the crane as a shape source. And there we are. We have a new brush. Next, we will go into my library and pick any photo we like does not have to look Japanese really . But since there are lovely colors in this one, I will choose it so and larger colorful background image to fit your canvas and create a new layer on top. This layer will be filled with the plane color off your choice. That will be the background off your artwork. This works better if the colors in the two layers contrast as you will see. I will use the brush as an eraser this time and look how wonderfully the underneath layer comes through, creating a multicolored flight off cranes. You can try thes with different backgrounds, Of course, and with values based layers. And you can experiment with other brushes to like our pine tree or our Prem brushes. But my favorite is the fund raiser, so I have made a small copulation off the nicest effects. 9. What to do with your brushes: I will now show you some other brushes. Better have designed in procreate, and your class project will be to show me some off your home made brushes and how you have applied the techniques that I have demonstrated in this class.
