About This Class

In this class, world-traveling freelance model Jin N Tonic will go over the basics of creating a great online portfolio! Students will learn the 3 Step Process of creating a great portfolio page that accurately represents the creator’s brand and attracts great clients. Through this class, students will create a short “About Me” paragraph, choose images for their portfolio and an appropriate, eye-catching organizational style, as well as pick out their best avatar image to represent their work. Whether starting a new page or revamping a current portfolio, this class is a useful tool to any creator looking to effectively showcase their work in a GREAT online portfolio page!

1. Welcome!: Hello, everyone. My name is gin and tonic, and I'm here to teach you three very simple steps to creating a great online portfolio. For the last four years, I have travelled around the world as a full time model. About 98% of the work that I do comes from the Internet and a little bit social media. This means when people view my portfolio, it better reflects me. My work, my brand and all around it better look great if I'm going to land the gay. Additionally, I've worked with hundreds, if not thousands, of artists, photographers, makeup artist designers, hairstylist, fashion bloggers and more, all of whom you confined online. So no matter what type creator you are, whether you're a PAP photographer or a custom floral arranger, a comic book illustrator, whatever having a great online portfolio is key to your success in this class, you'll follow along the class project pdf as we briefly dive into your work, your branding your target audience in your ideal platform. From there, I will walk you through three very simple and customizable yet important steps to creating a great our line portfolio that's going to showcase your work your brand and get you noticed and ultimately get you those new clients. So whether you're building your portfolio for the first time or you're just looking to revamp your current work, this class is sure to give you the tools that you need in order to create a great online portfolio. Let's get started. 2. Let's Talk Branding: Before we begin putting together your portfolio, we need to talk about your work and your brand. If you haven't already download your PdF as will be going through the first page in this video, dividing your brand before starting is important because it encompasses the overall look, feel and message of your work. To quote Jeff Bezos, the founder and CEO of Amazon, branding is what people say about you when you are not in the room. This is important to consider because in order to properly demonstrate your work, you'll need a first. Define your brand. This includes your creator name or does the name of your work. Some examples could be treasured moments. If you are a family photographer or perhaps simple touch if you're a minimalist interior decorator or another example, perhaps your world traveling model all about breaking rules, empowering others and enjoying the finer things in life. A great name for you might be gin and tonic When thinking of your branding, Focus on your goals as a creator and ask yourself, Who are you marketing towards? This is known as your target audience. Take some time to contemplate the nature society that your work is geared towards and the type of person a k, the type of potential customer whom you're interested in having see your great online portfolio. This will help you determine what sort of work you should showcase and on what platform. Defining your brand is really an in depth, an evolving process, so feel free to refer toa other great skill share classes after this one. Deciding WHERE to build your GREAT port: Before we begin creating your great online portfolio, you'll need to decide which is the best platform for you. It's important when deciding to keep in mind your brand and your target audience. If you're a custom orthopaedic cushion creator, for example, targeting senior citizens, I might not suggest instagram as being your main online portfolio. Depending on your goals, you have several options. When it comes to choose and platforms, take a look at Web site creators such a sweetly SmugMug and work press or social media pages like Facebook and Tumblr and like my neck community sites based around common interests. It could be a bit overwhelming deciding where to build your great online portfolio. But keep in mind what kind of work you create and who your target audiences. There's really no one better option over another. It just depends on what you're looking for. I also like to suggest three key words when it comes to choosing where to begin easy and functional. Take a look at all of your options. Engaged, um, on the fast, easy functional scale. Whatever seems to score highest in all three is definitely a great place to start. But the purpose of this video I'll be using a site that many models of the top refers are familiar with. Model may have dot com. This is a great community site where every creator is able to make their own portfolio page , and it is also available to be seen by the public as a model. This is, personally where the majority of my work takes place. I do, in fact, also have my own website, as well as multiple social media platforms where I showcase my work. But as far as my great All Im portfolio goes that can consistently be found here, a model may have dot com. Keep in mind as I take you through the three simple steps to creating a great portfolio that these tools can be used on any site that you choose. So take your time when deciding. Once you've made up your mind, fill out the final question on the first page of your pdf and share your chosen platform with the class in the class project section ready to get started. Let's head to the next video. We'll introduce you to step one. 4. Step 1 : Create A GREAT "About" : no matter what platform you decided on a major key to creating a great online portfolio is toe have a concise, personable and informative about section. You really have endless options on how to create your personal about section. But there are a few key components that will engage your audience, create immediate report and ultimately get you more noticed and more work at the creator. So whether you decide to write in third or first person, here are some absolute must haves to creating a great about me section include a brief introduction just they hate who you are in the name of your work or what it is that you dio location. Make sure you have your location listed. Make it clear where you're based. I cannot tell you how many thousands of all I'm portfolios I personally have passed by because I was not able to easily discover where that creator was located. This is such important information that really needs to be at the forefront of every about section you dio across all your business and personal platforms. Most people won't waste their time calling or emailing you, no matter how great your portfolio is. If they can't tell where you are located. And if you're a traveling creator such as myself, put your home location first. And be sure to mention at least two of your upcoming cities or include a short travel schedule clearly in your about section. You'll also want to include a little personal info about you. This is an opportunity to create that first impression with your viewers to after seeing your great online portfolio will soon be your customers. What is taken Very but make sure they were. Flex your work and your brand. Feel free to share a little bit about your experience in the field, how you got your start or your goals. It is also a great idea to include a current photo in your back section. Remember, people like to know who it is that they're working with and a lot of ties. Potential customers will make their decision just based on that small sense of knowing you a little better. Having seen your great photo Now, not everyone is comfortable in front of camera. I know, but suck it up. It doesn't have to be a professional photo as long as you're the focus of the image. It's brand appropriate, and it's a clear image that you feel represents you in your work well. Some other great options you can include in your about me section would be a favorite quote or a tag wing or a mission statement, or even a great one sentence referral or two similar to the reviews you would find on the cover of A. Each of these small additions will increase your immediate relationship with your viewer and ultimately lead to your great all I'm for polio. Now's the time to head back to your pdf and fill out Step one your great About me section. Don't forget the basic necessities of covered and feel free to let your personality shine through. It all really depends on who you are and what you want your brand to say about your work talking about yourself. It's often a creator's worst nightmare, but it's just one short paragraph, and I believe in you. Once you've got that out of the way, I'll see you in the next video for Step two 5. Step 2: Pick GREAT Images: Now comes the fun part. Choosing the images for your great online portfolio when choosing images is important to make sure that they are clear, professional and a large of the file size that they could be seen properly. Most importantly, you want to choose images that will reflect the message of your brand and that will appeal to your target audience. This is not just about picking your favorite photos. Favorite photos can be important but are not always relevant to the goal of your great online portfolio, which is to get you seen and make you money, some pregnant things to consider when choosing your images. Does this photo represent my work? Well, does this photo represent my brand? Well, does this photo appeal to my target audience? Is the subject matter of this photo still relevant to what I'm currently creating? Do I have better images of the same subject or style? Remember, variety is important, as is posting images of content you would love to continue to create. If you're a custom stuffed animal creator, for example, and you're sick of creating this elaborate French poodles, you'd be wise to not showcase them in your portfolio or the really don't make them the book . Just as important as choosing your great images, though, is deciding how you will organize them. You want to create a portfolio that not only does a great job representing you and your brand, but also looks great visually. Organizing your images properly will help you to achieve and engaging and coherent flow to your portfolio. There are a number of ways in which you could organize a great portfolio based purely on your personal judgment of what works best with your body of work, your audience in your platform. Some organization examples include from best to least newest, oldest by genre or category by subject matter or simply by physical attributes of each image, such as the image size, dominant colors, layouts, etcetera. This is where you have to get a bit O. C. D. With your work. It takes time to choose and organize the photos for your great online portfolio, and it can be stressful. But just know that there's a good chance that if you think it looks nice, others will, too. Also be sure to step back from time to time to get a fresh look at it. Let's take a look at my model mayhem portfolio to further build on this topic. For my images, I chose high quality, high resolution images that showcase my diversity with a strong presence of genres that I love posing for. I made sure that my recent work is showcased first, as those will be the first to be seen. To further demonstrate the diversity of my work, I switch it up from photo photo jumping from glamour toe art toe editorial genres, and I switched the location from Studio Toe Act or often as well to further organized and at a pleasing symmetry to my portfolio. I alternate rows of portrait images with landscape images. You could do something similar by alternating between color images and black and white. This gives everything a nice, cohesive feel despite the constant switch in genre and location. Additionally, I have clumped together images showcasing my diversity in various wigs. I've decided that it's important to have these together as it highlights the dramatic difference in look between each image and it's important to have these later on in my portfolio, as I have already established trademark and current blonde. Look at the beginning. Once again, there's no one right way to choose how to organize your great for polio page. Keep in mind your brand, your work, your message, your platform and your own aesthetic taste. And through these guidelines, I know you'll put together an amazing array of images sure to impress your prospective client. Take the time time now to write out in your P d. A. The types of files you will be choosing and how you'll be organizing. Don't forget to copy and paste and share with the class ready for our third and final step . You're so close to having a great online portfolio. I'll see you in the next video. 6. Step 3: Finish with a GREAT Avatar: now the time to add the cherry on top. You've knocked it out of the park with your great about me section. You've got your best, the most applicable images picked and with a clear organizational tactic. And now you just need to select an amazing avatar image to bring it all together. Most online portfolios will have a spot for an avatar. If you're building your own website, just focus on what the main image will be on your home page or potentially at the header of your website. This image is going to be the one that people see first and the one that they will associate with you and your work and your brand. So let's make it camp. Choose your avatar based off of your audience, your branding and your current style of work. Some great avatar options include your latest or perhaps most prestigious publication tearsheet, a quality image of your favorite or most recent creation, or even just a logo that you feel encompasses your brand. I personally do not recommend making your avatar a current photo of you. That's what your about Me section is for. Unless this is your personal Facebook page uses Avatar as an opportunity to showcase the one photo that really sums up what you're all about. The exception, of course, is if, like me, you are your work. In which case, be sure to get that base out there. The most important thing is that your avatar is engaging with your audience while also accurately representing you. Let's take a look at my avatar image on Model Man. This mock up magazine cover is a great choice as it combines my trademark edgy and glamorous look showcases my current hairstyle on tap to work IE. It's relevant now, and the text not only describes what the JMT attitude is all about, but is enough to cause viewers to want to click to see more, but not too much that you lose focus of the subject. A year is truly one last night. One. Avatars. If you're branding properly, there's a good chance that using the same avatar across multiple platforms will work just fine. If your brand is more flexible, however, you may consider catering your avatar along with their portfolios based on your platform. I have a different avatar on my YouTube channel, for example, at my brand on YouTube is much more comedy focused among my other platforms. My Facebook is much more behind the scenes on my instagram is a lot of content on empowering, so I adjust my avatars accordingly. I don't suggest you split your work up like this, though, if you can avoid it. It just happens to be what seems to work best for me and my personal brand. For now, just focus on your one great online portfolio and reassess your brand on a platform, my platform basis as needed. So let's see those great avatar photos copy and paste it in your pdf and be sure to share it with the class. 7. Thank You!: All right, students. Congratulations.
