1. 3 Minute Portuguese Introduction: Hello and welcome to three minute Portuguese course one. I'm Karen on Dime, a language tutor based in the UK Andi I wrote this course to help you learn to speak Portuguese. This course is based on the methodology I developed for teaching languages, which I used in all my classes and courses. The methodology will get you speaking quickly without the struggle normally associated with language learning. If you've tried to learn a language before and failed, please give my course ago. We are all human, which means we all possess the attributes that make us human. There's a wonderful quote by a man called Terence. He said, I am human and nothing that is human is alien to me. In my mind, what that means is that if one person is capable of something, then we are all capable of it. Because we're all humans, too. There's nothing in the world that I can understand if somebody before me has succeeded in understanding it. Therefore, it's only logical that since there are more than 260 million people in the world who have managed to learn, speak Portuguese, then you can lend it to anyway. Let's begin Portuguese in three minutes. I hear your cry suspiciously. Well, yes. This course is intricately designed to get you speaking Portuguese in the shortest time possible. I've created this course as a complete Portuguese course for the complete beginner who only had a few minutes to spare each day. Everything you need is contained in this course on Dive. Set out each lesson so that they could be completed in short bursts. For whenever you find yourself with a moment of freedom before you start this course, let me share with you an extremely handy learning tip that helped me to progress quickly and effectively in language learning. When most people start studying for anything, they tend to spend the first day or two studying for hours and hours on get through loads of work. However, very quickly this begins to dwindle. You might feel like spending hours studying Portuguese, which is great, but you want that feeling of motivation to continue. But it won't continue if you actually spend our studying. Limit your study time to trunks of just three minutes. No more. If you live it, you're studying to three minutes and there are three things that will happen. Firstly, you're maintain enthusiasm. If you want to learn anything, you have to maintain enthusiasm or else you won't continue. If you limit your study time to just three minutes, you'll keep Portuguese fresh and exciting. Andi. You'll be eager to learn. If you spend hours studying very quickly, you'll get bored with Portuguese Andi. It will turn into a chore. Secondly, is more consistent studying. It's much better to study for three minutes once a day, then to study for three hours once a week. A spare three minutes is relatively easy to find, even in the most hectic of schedules. If you make sure that you complete at least 13 minutes to the session every day, it will quickly become a habit that you will do without thinking. It's much easier to fit in a daily three minute habit than a weekly one hour. Have it. By doing this, you'll become a much more consistent learner. Onda consistency is the key to success. Thirdly, is more effective memorization. This is my favorite reason as to why you should limit your study to just three minute chunks. If you study something for just three minutes every day, you'll trick your brain into memorizing the information more quickly than if it were to see the information for hours each day it will think well, I see this information every day, so it must be important, but I don't see it very long, so I better hold on to it and make it a memory fast. You'll be amazed at how much more easily things tend to stay in your brain if you limit yourself to just three minutes a day, so three minutes is the key. Set a time, and once you reach three minutes, stop then give yourself at least half an hour before your before you do another three minutes. You should aim to do at least 13 minute chunk every day, any more than that is a bonus. But one is just fine. Just listen to this course and completely exercises, that's all. You'll be amazed at how much you learn 2. 3 Minute Portuguese Lesson 1a: Here's your first word in Portuguese balm bone. It means good bone. You don't Pulasthi em on the end of the word, but it does make what's called a nasal sound. So bomb is your next word? A. A. It means it is. So how would you say this in Portuguese? A bomb. A bomb. And it isn't now we now there's plenty you can do to make sure the language states family in your brain on doesn't disappear. You can play about with building sentences from the words you've learned so far. Whenever you find yourself with a spare 30 seconds, think of Think of something you can say in Portuguese, saying short sentences yourself importantes throughout the day keeps the language at the forefront of your mind. Also, from time to time, there will be a word or two, or maybe three that just will not stay in your brain. No matter how hard you try. What you should do to overcome vis is right that word down in English in big letters in the middle of a blank piece of paper. Put the piece of paper in your pocket. Andi, take it out a few times each day. Whenever you take it out, look at the English word and say the Portuguese word to yourself, along with a porter G sentence that contains this word. The first few times you might struggle to think of what the Portuguese word is on your have Double check. However, pretty quickly you remember the Portuguese word without having to check. You'll be amazed at how well this technique works. Finally, before I end this lesson, I'll just give you some information on what it means to learn a language. Memorizing lots of words isn't what it means to learn a language. It's a start, but it isn't gonna get you very far. What you need to be able to do is put those words together to get your thoughts and ideas across to somebody. Each time you learn a new word, think to yourself. Where could I use this makeover sentence? Andi, think about where you could say it. I am with the warm. You could say this to a winter in a restaurant. When you ask you how your meal is in, we do moan. It's very good. By doing this, you're giving the words relevance in your life. You'll remember things much more easily if you can see where it's going to be useful. Also, by building sentences, you're subconsciously creating a list of things to say so that you'll never be lost for words. Even when you're in portable. You can do this before going into a restaurant, for example. Have a quick think about what you could say to the waiter when you go inside, this helps you to build your confidence and stop you from having to think on the spot. You will be more likely to speak if you have already prepared something to say. 6. 3 Minute Portuguese Lesson 2a: Let's start this lesson with a quick recap of the words and phrases below. Toto Bad Mao The restaurant Western hunt and is a Here's a nice word with which to start this lesson. Who? Frankel. Who? Frankel. It means the chicken, Frank. So how would you say the chicken is for me? Frank? A. Para me Who? Frankel A para me. How would you say? I think the chicken here is delicious para me, Frank, quirky and delicioso para me, Frank. Or how would you say the pizza is for me? A pizza? A para me? A pizza parlor? Me? Or how would you say the pizza isn't for me? A pizza now? A part of me. A pizza now a part of me. 25. 3 Minute Portuguese Lesson 5b: you may have noticed that I've used two different words for the in this lesson. I said, Oh Fran, who means the chicken? And then I said, A pizza means the pizza. Well, there's an interesting thing about the word, the in Portuguese, and that is that they have two words. One is used in front of masculine knowns, and the other is used in front of feminine knowns. If you use a musket and now and you have to use the word, and if you use a feminine now, you have to use the word. So how do you know when a noun is masculine or feminine? Well, sometimes you can guess. For example, you can probably guess that boy is masculine and girl is feminine in Portuguese who got all toe on Giggerota? However, it's not always so simple. Announced like table or car, for example, don't have real genders. There is a rule, however, that you can use to work out whether something is masculine or feminine. On this rule works about 90% of the time. If a noun ends in the letter A, it's probably feminine. Look at the five mounds on the screen, the too feminine Knowns end in the letter A. And the three masculine knowns don't usually masculine noun is end in the letter O, but not always so we've got got off to is the boy who has the hunter? Is the restaurant well, Frankel is the chicken now that those three of the masculine words and then on the feminine side we have Al Gore. Alta is the girl, and a pizza is the pizza. So just remember the general rule if a noun ends in the letter A, it's more than likely feminine. But what I mean by a noun? Well, Armand. When I started to learn languages, the teacher would throw around these fancy words noun, adjective, verb, adverb and I had no idea what she meant. Here's the simplest definition of a noun that I could find. If you can put there in front of a word, then it's most probably a noun. The restaurant, the chicken, the pizza there are announce. So that means that words you can put away or are in front off in Portuguese or author knowns who has the hunter who frankel a pizza. So how do you say in Portuguese? The chicken is good, Frank Able? Well, frankly, one 26. 3 Minute Portuguese Lesson 5c: Now the word good is used to describe things. This is because it's an adjective, and adjectives describe things. If you use good to describe something masculine in Portuguese, then you can use bomb as we have already seen. However, if you want to say something feminine is good, the word bomb changes slightly and it becomes a bore boa. So bearing in mind that pizza is a feminine known, how would you say in Portuguese, the pizza is good, a pizza bore if it's a bore, so you use born when talking about masculine things and use bore when talking about feminine things. So how would you say the chicken is good? Frankly, boom, Franco able. And how would you say the pizza is good? A pizza boy, a pizza bore. So in this lesson, so far we've had Frankel, which means the chicken, a pizza, meaning the pizza, who or are other two words for the masculine and the feminine. And then bone and boa are the muscular and feminine words for good. How do you say Paolo is good? Powell away Boom found a boom. And how would you say polar is good? Bala a boa Allah a boy. So you use bone when describing masculine things on bore when describing feminine things. Balm isn't the only adjective that can change when describing a feminine known. Some of the other adjectives we've learned so far can change, too. Usually what happens is if an adjective ends in the letter O you change the 02 and A to make it feminine. I remember this by think of the two names in Portuguese, Powell and Power. Powell was a man's name, and it ends in an O, Whereas Paula is a woman's name. Andi, it ends in in a 27. 3 Minute Portuguese Lesson 5d: adjective. When an adjective is a word that is used to describe something, however, a simpler explanation is this. If you can put it is in front of a word, then it's most probably an adjective. It is good. It is fantastic. It is delicious. It is perfect. It is bad. These words are all adjectives in Portuguese. If you comport a in front of a word, it's probably an adjective, a bone, a fantastical Italy CEOs a pair. Fate a mountain. They're all adjectives now. The wood delicious in Portuguese is delicioso, and that could be used to describe any masculine daily. See also. But if you wanted to describe a feminine known, it changes slightly to become Delicioso. So that is the old Delicioso of the two ways to say delicious. So how would you say in Portuguese, the chicken is delicious. Franco in the list goes on. Who? Franco Delicioso. How would you say the pizza is delicious? A pizza Italy C o za a pizza Italy C o za. The Portuguese word for perfect is perfect, but when you use it to describe a feminine known, it changes that it's become perfect. Perfecto! Perfecto. So how would you say the chicken is perfect. Who? Franco A perfecto. Franco A perfecto. And how would you say the pizza is perfect? A pizza paper. Fate A pizza A perfect The Portuguese word for bad is now in the feminine. Mao becomes math, Ma. So how would you say imports? Keyes? The chicken is bad, frankly, Mo who? Frankel a Mao. But how would you say the pizza is bad? A pizza. Emma A pizza. Emma, How would you say power is bad? Powell? Aimo, how we Mao? And how would you say power is bad? Pala? Emma Pala, Emma. 28. 3 Minute Portuguese Lesson 5e: so so far, we've seen how four adjectives change. If they're describing feminine knowns. Bone becomes boy daily. See also becomes the receipt. Rosa Perfecto becomes per feta and now becomes Ma. Here are another couple of adjectives fantastical in the feminine is fantastic and Linda in the feminine becomes Linda. So how would you say in Portugal is the chicken is fantastic. Frankel a fantastical who frankly fantastical How would you say the pizza is fantastic? A pizza fantastical A pizza, A fantastical How would you say power is beautiful, Powell Alien Powell in. And how would you say Paula is beautiful? Pala Elinda Paolo a Linda. Here's a word that looks very similar to the English till he ville Tel Aviv, Ill. So how would you say in Portuguese, the restaurant is terrible. Who has the Hansa ait of evil who Cushnahan total evil. So in this lesson, so far we've learned who Franco means. The chicken A pizza means the pizza Ooh and ah are the masculine and feminine words for the bone and boa are the masculine feminine versions off good. The CEOs and jealousy Rosa other masculine and feminine versions off delicious perfecto and per feta. Other masculine and feminine versions off Perfect. Mao and Ma are the masculine and feminine versions off bad, fantastical and fantastical of the masculine and feminine word sport. Fantastic. Linda and Linda are the masculine and feminine versions of Beautiful and Tell Evil is the word for terrible. 29. 3 Minute Portuguese Lesson 5f: now the wood Terry ville in Portuguese doesn't change at all when it's describing feminine words. Used l evil whether you're describing a masculine or feminine noun. So how would you say the pizza is terrible? A pizza. It Berryville a pizza at Perryville. How would you say it's terrible here it de vive Aleke, a TV Valke. How do you say? I think it's absolutely terrible. Better me. Absolute demand, total evil. But I meet absolutely mental de Louisville. How do you say it's always terrible? Here is Sam Fratelli Valke, a Sempra Terry Valke? Or how would you say it isn't perfect? Bought? It isn't terrible Now. If your feet toe mash now, it'll evil now a pair, feet toe much. Now it they're evil. Now, if you're on holiday, I presume you'll want to order something other than chicken or pizza. So I've created a list of food related vocabulary for you to read through. I've called it a vocabulary expansion sheet, and you'll find it at the end of this lesson. I've tried to think of as many food or drink items as I possibly could, but if you find anything missing, let me know and I'll add it in this vocabulary expansion sheet will add bulk to your Portuguese language. You've been building the structure of the Portuguese language with the words and phrases I've given you so far, and you can now decorate it and embellish it with the words from the vocabulary expansion sheet. Now, obviously, you shouldn't aim to try and learn every single word on the list, as it wouldn't be very useful. Andi. It would take a very long time. Instead stocked. Build your own personal vocabulary by learning a few words you think you'll use regularly. For example, if you really love cheese, you confined on. Learn the word. OK, Jules, at a few words every week or so, I'm pretty soon you'll have a nice collection in your brain. Now it's time to practice what we've learned in this lesson. Now the word for is in Portuguese is a Well, here's the word for our So, um so So that means our in Portuguese sound. So how would you say the tea and the coffee are for me? Culture you cafe cell para me Who shot you Cafe Some part of me Or how would you say that on that are for him. Esu, esu South parilla issue is sound. Parilla, How would you say the pizza and the chicken off for me? A pizza? You Franco sample. I mean a pizza. You Frankel cell para me? Well, how would you say the tea on the coffee? All for me. Gotcha. You cafe south part of me. Gotcha. You cafe some part of me The opposite to sound is now. So which means are not or aren't now. Sell. So how would you say in Portuguese? The T on the coffee aren't for him. Gotcha. You cafe now sound parilla, which are E o cafe now sound parilla. So far, we've seen that the Portuguese have two words for the and, uh, well, there's actually 1/3 and 1/4 way. Bush and ash. These two are used when there's more than one of something. You port wash in front of muscular unknowns when they're in the plural on ash in front of feminine noun is when they're in the plural. 49. 3 Minute Portuguese Lesson 8c: so we call Bush and ash. The plural was for the for example, Ash message means the tables. Or was Frankel's means the chickens? What do I mean when I say plural, however, But in English most of the time, if you want to make a noun plural, you just add an s to the end. For example, chicken becomes chickens or table becomes tables. Well, most of the time you can do this. Import two G's to you. Just put an s on the end of the noun. Andi put the plural worth of the in front of it. For example, who Franko means the chicken with four angles means the chickens. A pizza means the pizza. Our pizza means the pizzas who wash the hunt means the restaurant Bush restaurant dish means the restaurants, so you can just put it s on the end and use the plural word for their And then you've got the plural in Port Keith. So I've put seven singular now owns on the screen. If you pause the video, see if commitment, plural and then we'll go through them. So who Frango means? The chicken Franco's means the chickens a pizza means the pizza as pizza means the pizzas. Who has the Hanta means the restaurant Bush restaurant dish means the restaurants who hotel means the hotel. Now this one's a little strange. The word hotel doesn't quite follow the same rules in the floor it becomes or fish. So the L at the end turned into an I before you can add the S so Bush got a sh is the Hotels Cafe becomes bush catfish Kuchar becomes Josh and a Meza, which means the table becomes ash moustache, meaning the tables. Here's seven more words in the singular. If you pause the video, try and put them into the pleural and then restart the video and we'll go through them. Episode means the person ash Jewish means the people that is the over means the reservation ash of his Elvish means the reservations. A shovel means the key. Ah, Siavosh means the keys leave. The room means the book most liberals means the books at Gaza is the house, and ash gosh means the houses movie. New means the wine oostveen yush means the wines Copel. It means the glass and bush capo means the glasses 50. 3 Minute Portuguese Lesson 8d: So how would you say in Portuguese, the coffees off for her catfish sound Para Ella. Who's catfish sound? Parilla. How would you say the restaurants? Bush Restaurant dish Bush Restaurant dish. Now remember when I showed you that all adjectives have a feminine form in Portuguese that you have to use when you're talking about a feminine known Well. There are also plural forms of each adjective in Fort Portuguese, and you use thes talk about plural now owns. This means that in Portuguese, each adjective has four different forms. I'll show you with the adjective fantastical. So we've got Frank a fantastical, which means the chicken is fantastic and that's a masculine, singular word. A pizza, a fantastical. The pizza is fantastic, and that's a feminine, singular word in the floor. What we do is put it s in the end. So we get Bruce Frango sh sound fantastic, which means the chickens are fantastic because that's a masculine, plural word and similarly in the family. And we take the feminine adjective and putting s in the end to make it pull ash pizza. Sh sound fantastic. Cash. The pizzas are fantastic. So it's a feminine floor. Would Every single adjective has these four forms. Andi. I'll go through all the actors. Oven is a far so good in Portuguese. We have bomb bones. Boa bush. That's the masculine singular must get in plural, feminine, singular and feminine plural. The word delicious is delicioso and the plural it becomes very Theo does in the feminine. It's in Dallas, you Rosa. And in the feminine plural it becomes very still. Now that pattern is more like the pattern followed by the majority of adjectives in Portuguese. So you'll see an O on the end for masculine singular on OS on the end for masculine plural an A on the end for feminine, singular andan a s on the end Feminine plural. Let's look with fantastic, fantastical, fantastic Oce fantastical, fantastic cash Beautiful Lyndall Lindows Linda Lean dash Extraordinary extra dinar You extra lean arrows extraordinaire, area extraordinaire areas Perfect Perfecto Their fate Bush perf Aita Their fate Dash now bad is a little different. It goes Mao mouth. Then in the feminine it becomes ma. And in the feminine plural you get mush similarly with terrible it's a little bit unusual. We have tell Louisville, tell he vish now that's similar to when we made the word hotel plural hotel became fish because the l turns into an I before you can put the s on the end. So generally, if you have an adjective that ends in an L to make it pull, you change the l to an I Before you add the S So tell evil television To have evil in the feminine doesn't change till he vish in the feminine PLO Nice is simpatico, simpatico, simpatico and simpatico ash 51. 3 Minute Portuguese Lesson 8e: So when you're talking about masculine mounds, you use the masculine, singular or the masculine plural versions of the addictive. And when you're talking about feminine mounds, you use the feminine, singular or the feminine plural versions off the adjective. Let's just go through with the word good Franco Avon with Frank Wish. Some bones a pizza, Ebola as pizzas, Some bush. But what if you want to say something like this, the chicken on the pizza all good? Well, whenever you're talking about a mixture of masculine and feminine knowns, you always use the masculine, plural version of the adjective. So this would be a franko, a pizza sawbones who, frankly, air pizza sawbones. So you use the masculine floral version of the adjective. Now let's practice a little with these adjective agreement rules. Here's a random, feminine known UMA Sonora. UMA Sonora means a carrot. UMA Sonora. So how would you say the carrot? A Sonora asked Sonora. How would you say the carrots? Ask the new rash? Asked the new rash. How would you say the carrots are good? Ashton's and new rash sell Bush, Ashton Rush, sell Bush, and here's a random muscular unknown in Bali Inbal. It means a cake gumball. So how would you say the cake? Bold. Who? Boldly, How would you say the cakes? Who from follows? Whose balls? How would you say the cakes are good? Who's bullish? Sound bones, Muslim bowls, some bones. 52. 3 Minute Portuguese Lesson 8f: now, just like the word there. The Portuguese word for my also has four versions. We've had mail and I mean yah that must give in on the feminine. We've also got Bushmills and ash Mean Yash, which is the plural versions of those. So how would you say in Portuguese, my carrots are delicious. Ash mini Ashton Rush soundless. Theo's Ash Ash Mini Ashton A rash sound? Or how would you say my cakes are delicious? Which may, with bullish sound delicioso, which may, or bullish sound? Let's do a quick test to see if you can translate these sentences into Portuguese. Keeping in mind all the adjective agreement rules aiport eight sentences on the screen. Pause the video right down the Portuguese and then we start the video and we'll check to see if you're right. So my chicken is good. You may o'franken able my pizza is Gord Amenia pizza. A boa. My cakes are good with mayors. Bullish thumb bones. My carrots are good. Pashminas san Rush some Bush. The chicken here is good. Frank, Wacky. Even the pizza here is good. A Pete's sake. Ebola. The cakes here are good. Who? Shambhala Shaky. Some bones the carats here are good ash, the new Russia key, Some Bush. Now this lesson has bean full off little grammar rules. They aren't difficult to understand. But there are a lot to remember, especially for a beginner in the language, However, I always say, Don't lose sleep. I've introduced thes grammatical structures very early on in the course, but I don't expect you to remember them all whenever you speak Portuguese. The reason I have introduced them now is because it's best to get them out of the way with early. And then the more you see them, the more you remember them. The most important thing when speaking a foreign language is just making sure you're understood whether you miss off a letter or used the wrong word for the as long as you're speaking and the other person understands what you're saying, it doesn't matter in the slightest worrying about these rules will only stop me from wanting to speak, but at the same time, knowing about them will make it easier in the long run. But as I said, don't lose sleep over them. Even the most fluent of speakers makes a slip up with these little rules now and again, so just learn them and then focus on the speaking 53. 3 Minute Portuguese Lesson 8g: So in this lesson we've had aka Media, which is the food e meaning and Tom Bihn meaning also some which is Ah, now sound. Aunt Bush and ash, which is the mascot. Implore all on the feminine plural words for the UMA Sonora. A carrot involved a cake. Andi was males and as mean yes, which of the plural versions off? My.
