1. Every Illustrator Tool Explained Typography Tools Promo: welcome to the every adobe illustrator Toe, explained Siri's. This series is throughout to be as a one stop shop for all you guys who really need to understand all the tools inside the software in order to understand how the software works . So if you're looking for a source off thorough knowledge on each and every adobe illustrator tool, and if you're familiar with my other courses, well, you might expect techniques that are straight to the point, easy to use and easy to follow. And I guarantee you that she will feel more comfortable than using each adobe illustrator tool. After watching the videos in this Siris. In this particular class, you will learn how to use the typography tools inside illustrator. So if you want to know how to use the type, talk the area type tool or the vertical type, it'll well you will find all the answers inside. So I'll see you in the class 2. 1 Illustrator Type Tool: In the next few videos, we will talk about the typography tolls inside Adobe Illustrator. Now, quick note here, all of you guys who have the CC version of Illustrator you will see your typography Tools group right here in the tools panel and all of you guys who have the pre cc illustrator version. You will see your typography toes right here instead off this curvature tool right here. And since I do have the cc version, I am seeing the car virtual total right here and the topography Topography tools are right here. And since I know that many of you work still on CIA CIA sixties five, I still sometimes work on the CS six. Let me just detach this group right here so that I don't have to go back and forth to this typography tools group. So if you don't know if you don't know how to detach a tools group from metals panel, simply click on this right edge off of the Tools group just like so and you'll be able to detach your your panel just like so. The first time they will talk about in this video is, of course, that typography tool or the type it'll which has a very, very handy letter short cut off the latter t. So the basic two ways of how this tool works is of course, when I simply click on my on my art. But like so and I started type, I'm going to create a P a point type, just like so. So all we need to do is to simply click on on the or board and start typing Start type in what we want to know you want to type just like so Now, with the other way of creating typography, using the type tool is to click and drag to create a text box. And what this will way of creating typography inside illustrator is to create paragraphs. So let me just typing quickly typography tools in illustrator and actually this will. This distinction here is pretty important because there may be times when you well, you may get frustrated why you can't use some paragraph options with the with the top that you created using just a point in the point type. I mean, if you just click and create your typography, you won't be able to crew to to use all these paragraph in that paragraph options right here. And however, if you create your type using the method that we just saw So if so, if you just click, click and drag to created textbooks, you will be able to use all these paragraph functions right here. There's one more important implication when creating these well pieces off taxed him with with these two methods. If I just grab this, the typography taxed right here with them with the selection tool. And if I simply start moving it or well, try to move, I just grab it. Then buy this little end right here. You can see that I'm distorting the tax. Of course, if I hold down the shift key, I'm gonna be I will be able to to change, change its size proportionately, just like so. And however, if I grab this text box just like so you can see that I am just but the Johnston the tax books I am not adjusting the tax inside this tax books. So again, if I If I just grab it, you can see that I'm adjusting the tax books right here. And as I said, you can simply could triple click in the in this case to highlight this whole text and we could go to the paragraph options. We got all these options right here. And these three options, like a line left center and right, are pretty obvious. But we also can justify with the Lyell with the last line aligned left just like so, we can, of course, make it to make the last line, go to the center to the right, or justify all lines just like so to create well, in effect, that is looking like this. Of course I can still the just this tax mosque, and you can see that I am adjusting that well, the spaces between all the ladders, just like so now, before we move on to another till I think it's, ah, I think it's a good time to share with you some. Some really handy illustrator shortcuts. There are usually that I usually use. So if I just select all the this, all these pieces, pieces off text and if I simply hold down control shift and the less or more than a symbol or less were greater than symbol, you can see that I am quickly adjusting the size of my of my text, so I'm simply holding them control shift. And now I'm clicking are pressing the greater than or lasting symbol or coma or period, if you will, Just like so. And another handy shortcut in Illustrator is to simply grab a piece of tax. In this case, I'm going to hold on the old and the shift keys together on a Mac told an option and the shift keys. And I'm simply going to press the down or up arrow, which is basically just in the baseline ship, and it will work really, really handy. Well, we will be really, really handy when we work with that with the type on a path to so multiplicity shift plus up or down arrow and we can adjust the base lynch of the position on the baseline of our text. So there we go. These are the basics of fusing the typography. Will the title Inside Illustrator. In the next video, we will talk about using the area type, which is the second toe in our typography tools group 3. 2 Area Type Tool: in this, you know, we will talk about the area type toe, which is the second type tool in our typography tools panel right here. So the way this tool works is a pretty straightforward If I just grab a well, let's say, for starters, I'm going to grab the rectangle tool and I'm going to create Iraq tangle like so and then grab the area title just like so. And if I start to well, if I click somewhere inside this tax box, you will see that I won't be able to create type inside. And this, well, this rectangle, but we need to do is we need to collect on a path, do it to be able to create an area type it'll so well to create area type. So now I can simply type and typography tools, just like so. But of course, let me just maybe move to the left. But of course, it's nothing special, right? It simply looks like we just created a simple tax box and started typing in something inside. So let's grab a bit more complicated shape. Maybe I'm going to go with this star tool right here, and I'm simply going to click and create a storm may be just a big girl just like so And now I'm gonna grab the the area type told Click on any path Just like so I'm going to start typing Typo girl typography tools in illustrator. And as you can see all these, all these letters are being constrained to mind To my world star shape. I noticed that as soon as I collect on the star, you can see that it lost all its attributes. It doesn't have the black Fail or they didn't have any structure. It doesn't have the black fill. So if you want Oh, still, if you want to maintain your basic shape and you want to type in something on that ship or in that shape, just remember to copy it into your clipboard before so just in a zone example I'm gonna grab this startle again. We're going to create one. Maybe this I'm gonna I'm gonna make it something, something else I don't know. I'm just gonna I'm just gonna get a yellow field. So I'm going to simply carpet into my click clipboard by present control C and I'm gonna grab the air attack area type toe click on a path. Now I can start typing in typography tools. Of course, my starches Onda lost all its attributes, just like so he lose illustrator just like that. And now if I just press control be, you can see that I just pasted in mind my starter. I copied into my clipboard, and now he's being well, this tax looked like it's have bean inside my star. No, there's one more little trick when working with the area type tool inside illustrator. If I just grab the startle again and create another star and I'm gonna make it a bit smaller this time, just like so and I'm going to grab the type tool and hover over a path like in this case, you can see that it's temporarily changing to the area title. And if I just click on it, I'm again able to simply type in typography tools in the Illustrator, just like so. And of course, we can still select all these guys and make them smaller to just see what is going to look like inside inside our shape. But the thing to remember here, this the strict remember here is that you can initialize will temporarily initialize the area type of tool when you have when you have a shape, like so you have the typed alone and you simply hover over the path of a shape. You can turn that shape into into an area where you type in type in your next, just like so. 4. 3 Type on a path tool: the 32 in the typography toes in Illustrator Group is the tool called Type on a Path Toe. It's a very handy tool in inside Illustrator, but at the same time it's a bit awkward toe work with Let me show you what I mean, if I grab maybe just just for starters, a simple rectangle and create direct angle just like so I'm gonna make it I'm gonna give it just a blip Black stroke? No, Phil. And I'm gonna grab the end, the type on a path tool and I'm gonna hover over a path just like so. And I'm going to type in typography tools inside inside. Illustrator, You can see that I am that I am creating my text along this This line well, first this horizontal and then the vertical line. Now why did I say that? It's a kind of kind of awkward to work with. If I now just grab this will click the selection tool on this tax. You can see these little these little bars with with squares over them right here. And these guys are responsible for manipulating in this text and along along the path will these two guys and this guy right here. In order to grab them, we need to grab the direct selection tool. And now you can see that my cursor will change when I hover over any of these any of these bars right here. So if I just grab this one, you can see that I am moving it along my my path. And if I grab this one, I'm going to tell illustrator where this tax is actually ending. So I'm gonna move it to somewhere here. And if I grab the middle one, if I can see it and I think it's somewhere here, even see that if I hover over my cursor is changing again, I'm able to move this whole path just like so energy concede starts to start still. Well, dance around. It starts to starts to work the way it will actually wanted not to. Really What? I would like it to work. So I'm gonna just maybe moving to somewhere here and with this middle of bar right here could also Philip our text just like so. So if I move it around just like that, you can see that I am flipping it inside and outside the path, just like so. And of course we can. We can type our text along a different path. It doesn't have to be a close path. It can be an open path. So let me just grab the mental real quick. And I'm just going to create a quick line that is going to look, maybe something like that, and I'm going to I'm going to finish this shape and I make maybe gonna give it just a stroke. No feel. So I'm gonna grab that type on a path tool again. I'm going to click on this path, just like so. I'm gonna type in typography, tools, topography tools should suffice just like that. And again, if I just grab the direct selection tool, I'm gonna be able to move these guys around and again. If I grab this horizontal one, I'm gonna this middle one. I'm going to be able to move this guy along the path or for moving down, just like so. But as you can see, we were kind of like lost one word. So I need to move this guy just like so and maybe then move this guy up just like that now , an important thing about this tool and it's something for you to explore on your own. I would really advise you to explore it on your own because I want to keep these videos short. Is when If you have this tax selected and if you double click on the type on a path tool you're gonna get type on a path options. Let me just get the preview and you can change the effect If you want from rainbow do skew so you can give it like, maybe more like. It's kind of like flat or maybe alkaline down on our path. So we are getting some kind of a three d effect here. We could do a three d ribbon. We could do a star step or we could do a gravity. And, of course, if you want, you can flip your your tax toe to make it look even more funky. Just like so. Now, of course, we can align to path to baseline or as sender to make it go lower or D Senator Dio to make it all go up. We can move it to center, so it so this path is going like going through through that this text. And of course we can. We can go with the baseline, which was set as default as for the spacing, but we can set it to a negative value. Of course, we can leave it in order to a negative value which will basically move these letters away from each other, which is well, I guess quite the opposite off what you would expect. And if we if we move, it will if we give it a bigger value, we're moving all these letters closer together, just like so. So the thing to remember when working with the type on a path to is that you can type will use it on a close path and on a open path just like this one. You can manipulate to these handles with the direct selection tool. And if we if you double click on this type on a path tool, we're gonna get type on the path options. And I really do encourage you to have fun with all these options because you can you can really let your creativity well, you can set your creativity free with all these options. So in the next video, we're going to talk about the next tool, which is called the vertical Type two 5. 4 Vetical Area Type: In this video, you will talk about creating type vertically, so we will talk about the vertical type two. Now the way this works seems to pretty much the same as the regular type. It'll would the change that is going to create the type vertically. So if I just click on my of course with this tool is selected. If I just click on my art aboard and start typing and you can see that I'm creating the text vertically, just like so. And if I click and drag just like that and start typing in, you can see that I am creating a text box. Typography Tools in Illustrator. I am creating a taxed box there with this, a vertically in a vertical vertical tax. And, of course, when we go to this paragraph options, you can see that right now we don't have the line left to right and and center. But instead of that, we got the align top the line center and align bottom options just like so. So the thing to remember here is that with the vertical type toe, if we just click on the art board and start typing in, we are going to create. We're going to create typography we're going to create at that point text, and we're going to vertically type it in. And as you can see, I think I misspell the typography. Oh, no, I didn't. Okay. And as you can see, we still can align this guy to the bottom, to the center, or to the to the top in relation to the point where we clicked. But we're not able to manipulate it with these options right here with these justifications , options like that. And with that, if we click and drag just like that and we start typing in typography tools just like so you can see that we are typing in a type of our tax inside a text box and just like that, with the regular type tool. If we have a If we have a simple maybe I'm going to grab the startle again. If we have a says simple shape, just like so and we Gramp the vertical type tool and click on a path just like so you can see that we are turning it into a well, a text box with they type inside that is being written vertically typography in illustrator , Just like so. Of course we can see this will all the tax because this frame is too small. But not is that as soon as I manipulated size, we can see that we are fitting in all the tax inside our star. And by the way, this is the same as simply grow will create in any shape, just like so and then grabbing the vertical area type TTL. So all well, both these guys were pretty much the same. So the type to work kind like in conjunction with the area type tool and the vertical type will work in conjunction with the vertical title. So what I mean by that is that if I just grab this vertical area, type it'll and click on a path again, I'm going to be able to type in something into inside this well, inside this shape and because we create, we transformed our shape into a tax to box. If you don't want to go to this vertical area, type toe what you could do. If you want to type in text vertically inside a shape, you can simply grab this vertical type vertical type tool just delete this guy, create a star group the vertical type toe, hover over a path and start typing in your tax just like so. In the next video, we're going to talk about the vertical type on a path tool, so stay tuned. 6. 5 Vertical Type On A Path: in this video, we will talk about that vertical type on a path toe which sits right here inside our tools , pal. So I'm gonna grab the rectangle tool, and I'm simply going to create the rectangle that is going to look something like that. I'm gonna grab the vertical type on a path tool, and I'm simply going to click on a path somewhere. Here it was this. If I start typing in typography tools in Illustrator, you can see that the type is following the path, but it's following it vertically. So with the regular type on a path to Lee was following it horizontally. And this time it's following it vertically and, of course, weaken. We could manipulate the tax. We can make it smaller or bigger if we want to. And just imagine placing this kind were using this to to to place this kind of a text a longer like a ribbon or something like that. You can get really, really crazy shapes crazy effect. With this kind off, this went well with this tool to create this kind of effect. And, of course, if I just select all these guys and double click on this vertical type on a path toe again , I'm gonna get type on a path options. And in here, if I start playing around with this fact option, I'm going to get some really, really crazy shapes. Let me just maybe make these guys a bit smaller. So maybe we can see these effects a bit better and be something like that. And again, I'm gonna initialize the type on the path options. And maybe I'm gonna go with stair step. This time, you can say we're getting completely different results right here. Or move. Maybe with gravity. You are getting a different funky, funky effects with this guy as well. And, of course, all all of these in other other options apply here as well so we can align it to to the path that differently. If you want to, we can play with spacing. Uh, etcetera. 7. 6 Type on a path trick: now, before you move on to the last tool with the which is the touch type two insider illustrator. And I want to show you a little trick and that you might probably want to use when you're creating ribbons. So let me just grab the Ellipse stool and create a simple circle that is going to look something like that. And let's say that you want to create tax that would to go along. Well, this this curvature on this, this line off them of the circle. So I'm gonna grab the type on a path tool. And I'm simply going to Cullicott somewhere here. And I'm gonna type in my maybe first ribbon just like something. No, What I'm gonna do is I'm going to grab her the direct selection tool and just play around with these guys like so and move this guy to the center just like that. Now, what I'm gonna do is I'm going to grab this guy. I am going to copy it, and I am going to lock its I'm gonna press control, see on my keyboard eminent and then controlled to for my keyboard to make sure that is being locked and I'm gonna go ahead and press control half, of course, on a Mac, you go with command half, and I'm gonna grab her the direct selection tool. And I'm going to end this guy down to somewhere here. But as you can see, this guy is being a fillip in their own direction. So what we could do is we could simply grab this guy right here, this metal bar and move it up just like so and maybe play around with this guy just like that. But as you can see, we got a bit of a problem here. I mean, we we can see that this first text, my first river, is being Well, I think it's a being higher on the circle than this bottom and bottom tax. So I I'm pretty sure that the distance between these guys is not is not equal to the distance from this. The top text and the center point and the bottom tax and the center point are not equal. And we as designers want coherence, don't we? So this is what what we could do. I'm going to press control. Also my keyboard on, um I could go with control Command option to unlock my first my first text. So I'm just gon change districts to my my first project. Let's call it like that and I'm gonna make sure that has bean bean directly in the metals. I'm gonna move this guy to the left. So what I want to do right now is I want to go to the path and type on the path options, and I want to change the align to path from baseline to centers. Just like so. And maybe, of course, it this world. That's what I told you about working with this tool takes takes time and takes patients. Really? So I'm gonna grab this guy again, going to grab the tape on the path to options moving to centre. And now I can be sure that the distance between this guy and the central point and this guy and the center point is equal because our text is being aligned to the middle of our of our path. So in the next video, we're going to talk about the touch type tool, which is a told that all of you guys who are working on the pre cc version of illustrator. Well, you won't have it. But all you guys who have the CC version, you can you can use it. So in the next video, we will talk about the touch. Well, the touch type. 8. 7 Touch Type Tool: in this year, we will talk about the last still in our typography group, which is called the Touch type. It'll and as I mentioned before, it was introduced in Illustrator CC. So all you guys who have the pre cc version of illustrator, unfortunately, you're unable to to use it. But well, let's briefly take a look at what this tool does. So let me just quickly going click with the type of tool somewhere here and type in. Uh, maybe Dutchman, Let's go like this. We're talking about the touch type told, so I'm gonna just type in touch. Okay, So what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna grab the touch type tool and notice that as soon as a click on it will get this notification box saying click on the character to enable the touch functionality. So I'm gonna maybe click on this age letter like so. And as you can see, we get this additional bounding box right here. And this bounding box has also these five little dots in each of the corners right here. And one this well, one little dot on a hollowed out right here on the top and notice that assumes they hover over this top in the top spot. I'm able to change well to rotate the taxed. Well, this this particular letter just like so Now if I want to change its size independently, Aiken, grab this. Grab it by this top right spot, and I can move it well, skilled proportionately if I wish. So I can scale it only horizontally by grabbing it by this top left spot. Like so, I mean vertically. I can change vertical if I grab it by this bottom right spot, just like so. And I can change its baseline shit. So basically, I can move it around if I grab it by this bottom left bottom left spot right here. Now this tool is well, it works best if you have a like a touch enabled monitor or you have a tablet where you could literally literally manipulate a single character with your with your well with your hands or with your with your a panel. And of course, it's nondestructive editing. So if I want to change simply this letter, H Aiken grab it just like so. And I can type in some other letter like G or F or any letter you want and you can see that it is maintaining all of the all the attributes or all the change. The changes that we apply to the letter h are being applied to the letter Ephraim as well. So again, if I want to change something about another letter, I can simply click on it to to enable this bounding box. And I can move it around if I want to, Just like so I can rotate it just like that or scale it just like so. So there you go. This is how you can use the touch type it'll. And actually, this is how you can use all the typography told inside Adobe Adobe Illustrator. So I really hope you like this class and learned a thing or two. And if you have, please give it a thumbs up and the submit your project. It always encourages me to create even more classes for you. So until next time, my name is David Dubinsky.
