1. Class Trailer: you like Thanksgiving? Wanna learned? Animate a turkey? I'll show you how to use this jumping turkey to create a personalized animated video card. This class will teach you how to make a turkey jump from side to side. With only six drawings, you can apply the same animation techniques to any character you like. For our class project, we will be animating a cartoon turkey for a bonus. We will turn our work into an animated Thanksgiving video card for you to personalize and share. The class requirements are a computer or tablet with the program Rough Animator and a drawing tablet. This class is for beginners, but animation fans and professionals are also welcome. There is a section of the class that will revisit a skill. I taught in another class here on skill share called Good Vibrations and Animation to your video titles. You may want to take this class first, but it is not necessary. If you're not familiar with Rough animator, don't worry, it's only $5 it's pretty easy to pick up. Hi there. My name is Patrick Davidson. I'm a graphics freelancer and part time animator. I've been animating for over 20 years now, and I've worked on projects from TV commercials to feature films. I worked mainly in two D or hand drawn animation. My favorite personal animated projects are Web comedy series Traveling Green Goes and My Action. Siri's Trip. I'm also an expat from California living in my new adopted country of Costa Rica. But enough about me. Let's get into this class. 2. Using shapes to create roughs: Welcome to today's class. Let's get right into it. So I am going to provide a file called Turkey Jump DOT Are A for rough animator. This is a rough animator file and basically, we want to use this as a stepping stone to start our project. So you're not having to do everything from scratch. So I'm gonna go and double click this and open it in rough animator and you can see I've already got a few layers started for you. So let's look at the colors layer really fast and I'm just gonna scrub it and you can kind of see the animation that's going to happen. So he's starting from here, and then he's jumping. And what we're going to do is we're going to have that jump flip. So it's going the opposite direction, so he's gonna land on the other side, and then we're gonna have jumped back and forth back and forth from side to side. We're going to do all that with just six drawings. So part of the point of this class to show you you can have decent looking animation with a limited number of drawings, and that's kind of our goal today. So as you can see, I've already got it colored. But the steps to me getting there and then I'm gonna go over those with you now. So if I turn the color layer down, let's go and pull up the cleanups, which is basically the Leinart but cleaned up Leinart. And it's the same drawings before just not colored. And before we got to the cleanups, we did the refs. And if I pull up the refs, this is basically crude. Quick drawings, mainly using shapes, is kind of how I work to build up to the drawing. The clean drawing and what happens before the reps is what I'm have a layer here called circles. So if I pull circles up here and I pull Ruff's down, you can see I use circles in shapes, toe map out the major body parts of a character. So as I script through this, you'll see I've got a circle for the head, and that's right here is remain a little bit more here. I've got a big star, a big circle for the body and then two ovals for the feet. And as I scrubbed through you can see. I'm moving those around in air, and that's kind of giving us our movement for the character. So the reason I like to do this is it helps keep portions. It helps with squash and stretch. So if you watch his body here, you can see it's it's stretching right here. And then it comes back into its form. When he's hanging in mid air and then down here, its gravity is taking a hold of his body, and it's kind of squashing it down. So we've got squash. We've got stretch here, stretch here, and then it kind of comes back into its form. So sometimes I'll do this circle layer here and help me get my animation stronger. Or sometimes I'll just go straight into the rough sex and map out the timing in the movements of my drawings. So I initially when I started doing this, I had three drawings, and now it's up to six. So I had done, uh, drawing here, and then I did this drawing, and then I had done that dry and I kind of went back in and did in betweens. But for the purposes of this class, we're not really trying to learn how to draw in this class. We want to learn how to use the tools of the program. Rough animator. We want to show how, with just six drawings, we can achieve a full cycle of animation that a loop back and forth forever Aziz long as the loop is smooth as it loops back and forth. So that's kind of why I gave you this rough animator file. 3. Clean-ups: The first thing I need to do is I want to go into the background layer, and I just wanted to draw a little horizontal lying to show where the ground is. And that's important so that we can keep his feet on the same baseline and they're not jumping around between from drawing to drawing. So as I start working on my roofs, I make sure I put the feet on the baseline rough and my shapes for the head, the body head, body feet. And then once I've gotten these major body parts done, then I could come back in and do secondary portions of the body like the neck, the arms, the legs, the tail in this case with our turkey. But even if we weren't animating a turkey, this would kind of work for a regular character. We've got head, body and feet, so if I were to sketch this from scratch, I would do these circles and then I would go on to the new layer, which would be my refs. But at this stage, I don't want it to be too detailed. You could see I didn't add any eyes in. I didn't add any feathers on the tail. There's no fingers on the arms. They're just a couple of triangles, basically. And and I've done that for every drawing here. As you can see, it's really basic, but it's keeping the proportions, and we're getting our movement in our timing down at this stage, and you can you can see it works pretty smoothly here and maybe I need to add it another in between. But we're pretty good here with these six drawings. After that point, I would take my rough so I would create a new layer on top of it, and I call it cleanups. And so let's go ahead and pull cleanups here. And I used the refs on underneath the cleanups to trace, basically cleaner drawing on top. And as I'm doing that cleaner drawing, I want to make sure that I'm connecting all of the points so that there's not any gaps. Say, I were drawing the neck here and there was a little gap here. We'll, when I go to my colors later on that I trained filling the neck here. That color is gonna spill to the background, so that's why we wanted to make sure as we're doing our cleanup drawings that it's a nice, clean line. And every part that's gonna be a different color is separated by lane work. So you can see that I've done that for all six drawings here. There we go. Now, the next stage, after we've done the cleanups, we want to do the colors. So what I would do is I would just modify layers, were gonna duplicate that layer, and then we get cleanups. Copy. At that point, I change that to colors. So I'm gonna go ahead and just show you how I color drawing here from start to finish. So let's go and do that now. 4. Coloring: So I've got my color palette, and I pretty much know that I want this dark brown to be the body. So I'm gonna grab my paint bucket tool, and I just start clicking in the areas that I know are gonna have that color, and instead of changing it, cut the next to the next color. So I know that's gonna be the lighter Brown instead of doing that. What I like to do is I like to color all six drawings at once with that same color, so I'll use my right arrow key. And I'm going to the next drawing. And I click those areas that need that color, right? Arrow key. Same thing. And you can see here. This gap is so tight here that it didn't I'm gonna need to double click again in there and next drawing click, click. Two clicks. Got most of that. Tried this. So there's a good example of me not completing this correctly. So let me go back to my black, my breast stroke brush tool, and just connect that. And then when I go back to my fill tool, grab the appropriate color and they're so right. Arrow key to more drawings to go. We're just going to click a few times here and almost done with that color. Okay, now one thing, and the next thing I like to do is I like to zoom in and look for major gaps and you can see right here there's a little bit of white and right here, there's a little bit of weight. I probably not gonna worry too much about that, but this one, I might want toe fill it and I'll just grab my brush tool. And I want to make sure on drives behind in the tools options. And then I just dropped over it, and there it goes. Now I know some of these previous drawings we had That looks pretty good. Here's a Here's a definite white spot here, so let's zoom in on that right there. All right there. Maybe that also, and maybe right here, So I'm just going to go through and clean up the color that I just did with my breast tools . So that's usually how I go about coloring my animation. As I hold down my space bar, my tool turns into the hand from wherever I'm at, and I can kind of pan around even though I'm zoomed in and let's get that little area, and that looks pretty good. So that color now is clean throughout all six drawings. And again, we don't want to go to the coloring stage until we've gotten our timing done in the in the rough stage. So there's an order to this. Otherwise, you're backtracking and you're doing things twice. So we want to make sure that our timing is good. We've got all the drawings we need in arrest stage. Then we can move on to the cleanup drawings. And then once those air done, we can move on to our color stage. So let's go ahead and pick another color here, pick our paint bucket tool, and let's just kind of paint the rest of his tail and shouldn't take too long here to paint all six of these. So I'm just gonna do these real quick here. Um, what's the same technique? You know, I'm gonna zoom in. There's a little white here, so I'm gonna grab my brush. Just touch that, Uh, and the keyboard is one of the reasons I like working on the Mac version of this software. Did you get these? The keys that you can use on a keyboard and work a little bit faster. Ah, look pretty good. Okay, So only a couple of colors left. Let's grab a yellow here for the beaks and the feet, and I actually might want to make that a little bit or injure. So I'm gonna tweak that Graham this cause I want to save that color and drag it in my color palette there. So now, at this color, I just go ahead and fill in my areas and moved to the next drawing and a couple more. A couple more to go here. But you can see that coloring can be done fairly quickly. If you're Leinart is clean. And you've drawn with coloring in the back of your mind of how you're gonna need to do this process of clicking and filling. And OK, so that looks pretty good. Now, the last color here, I'm gonna pick a red for the head area and do this real quick and then we'll come back and clean that up because there's a lot of light. The more detail there is, the more problems you have with filling. Ah, Now I can zoom in, grab my brush tool, make sure we're drives behind, and then just start cleaning that up a little bit. Okay, So we have actually just colored all six images again, and I actually, I'm gonna like that better, I think because you look at the color of the feet. I change that from this brighter yellow. I think I like that better. So I'm gonna go ahead. I'm gonna delete this whole layer. Eso we modify layers were going to go down to delete layer. Okay, so now that we've got our six color drawings ready to go, we don't need any of these other layers turned on except for background. Still want that background line there? So once we've got to this stage, we're ready to start animating the rest of the jump. So we're going to reuse these same drawings, so we're gonna duplicate and flip the drawings to create our looping animation, and that's what we're going to do next 5. Duplicate & flip: So at this point, I want to do a quick save of my file so I don't lose any work. And now we're ready to start duplicating our drawings. So again, we've got six drawings here, and we basically are going to duplicate each one by one. So let's go ahead and do that right now. I'm gonna do add drawing, and we're gonna duplicate after. And so now these two drawings are exactly the same. Now what I want to do is I want to move the second drawing all the way over here. So the way to do that is to just hit this button and you can see it's moving there. Now it's at the very end. And we want to do that for the remaining five drawings. So go back to drawing, too. We're going to duplicate that after, and we're gonna move that all the way to the end, go to do drying three. We're going to duplicate that and we're gonna move it to the end. Let's go to drawing four organ duplicate that. Move that to the end, and then we got to go to drawing five. So 12345 duplicate that. Move it to the end, and then our last drawing. 123456 We're gonna duplicate that and move that to the end. So if I scrubbed this right now, you will see is basically jumping from here to here. Now, what we want to do instead is we want to reverse this. So this drawing needs to be over here. We're gonna move all all of them like that. So let's start by clicking this direction. 12345 And then these two should be right next to each other. And let's just keep doing that the same. Other directions. So 1234 I grabbed this guy. It's 123 Discontent 12 And this guy, I want the other side. So sending one. Okay, so now if I scrub it, he should jump from there, and then he's going back to where he came from. But we want him to jump to the other side of the screen here, so there's a one more step we need to do, and that's basically we're going to flip every drawing from here. These last six drawings that we just created so the way we do that is we need to grab our selection tool and there's a flip horizontal button down here that we want to hit. But it's not ready to hit until we select our character. So we just grab a circle, make sure we grab everything. And now we can hit flip horizontal. And then we could just tap and we're done. And we can move on to the next and we do it again. Flip horizontal. Okay, dude. So let's just do this to all six of these drawings. And when I'm done with that, you will see two more to go. We still have one more step to get this finished here and flip that, Okay, But now what we need to do is we need to If we were to scrub it right now, what's going do it? That's not exactly what I want. I'm so we need to reposition those flip drawings. So let's go ahead and do that. And the easiest way to do this at this point, we're gonna turn on onion skin, and that's going to show us the previous drawings. But if I come over here, I need to add all the way all the onion layers that I can going that direction if I add I don't need these on right now, so let's just do the left side of the onion skin. Now we're making sure we're on drawing seven here or drawing one of the of the reverse. And I think that this might be okay. Let's Yeah, it The positioning of this is Okay, so we want to move this one of the position of this one. We want to move it more to the right. So let's grab our selection tool. Select this guy. And now we're gonna move him over this way. And a good rule of thumb here is to pay attention to the heels. So we're gonna try and line up his heels with the onion skinning beneath him, and then we just click off. So, as you can see, we've got four more to select and move. So we've got to move this guy a little more to the right. Yeah. All right. Now let's grab this guy and we're going to move him over to the right, and when I like to do is keep that toe touching the lying there and d select. And that's good, this guy and one of him and will keep his toe on the line and well trained match up the where the toenail would be on the line there and then get his feet on the baseline. De select. And that's how we know he's gonna be lined up correctly. This guy move him over again. We want to line up that big toe right here, dropping down just a little bit. De select that. And in our last drawing to move is this guy. And let's again, I'm just paying attention to that toe and and then the baseline here, right about there. D selected, so that should be pretty good. Let me turn off onion skinning and let's go ahead and scrub this, and now you can see he's jumping from one side to the other. Make the positioning might need to be adjusted a little bit, but let's go and play it real quick, and that's going pretty fast. So a trick if that's going too fast on the ones instead of adding drawings. All of these, what we can do is we can go file change frame rate and instead of 24 we could do 12 and that would be like animating on the twos. So if I hit OK, we played at your place lower, so that's pretty good. But I think that the position of a few of those drawings is off still, so let's go ahead and try. I think this guy needs to move eso Let's Let's go ahead and do that. I think these I need all four of these. I need to move to the left to the right. Still, somebody edit multiple. I'm gonna grab for okay and then I'm gonna select 04 of those and I'm gonna drag them all a little bit to the right. Keep him on the baseline here and de select. And then it applies that toe All four. So I moved four drawings at the same time and that seems to work was going to play that, and that looks with better for me. So at this point, I'm gonna go back up here. Let's go to change the frame rate back to 24 if I had played will be pretty fast, but let's go and do that real quick. Come and that's looking pretty good. So the next thing we want to do is loop this jump, so he's looping, so jumping from one side to the other back and forth, so let's go ahead and do that now. 6. Cycles: so to make our turkey jumped from one side to the other back and forth. The first thing I want to do is I want to create a little bit of a pause at the's stands Still points. So I'm gonna go in ad of two frames on each of these two drives that drawing in this trying . And now we're ready to create our cycle. So let's go ahead and add a drawing at after. And that gets us a splint drawing right here. And then we're going to click make cycle, and then you can see we get this green section here with the green outline covering all of the previous drawings. And the next thing that I want to do is I want to switch this tool option cycle from forward to back forward because we want him to loop back and forth, and then we're going to change the drawing duration of the loop of the cycle and let me pull back my timeline horizontal zoom a little bit. Yeah, and OK, so if I pull that back right there, that should be good. So let's go ahead and try that out and see what that looks like. Okay, so I just need to add a few more, so make sure the green cycle is selected and I'm gonna add some more frames up until this line. So let's pull it back a little bit there. That should work. Let's try that. There we go. Now he's jumping from back to forth and he's doing a full loop and weaken Luke that as much as we want. So right now he's just looping for just over two seconds. Uh, let's say we wanted him to loop for 10 seconds. Then you would just do the math and add those frames here on the cycle itself. So we're at 24 frames a second. So 10 times 24 if we're doing 10 seconds would be 240. So we want to get this number up to around 240. So we would let's just add 200 there and see how that where that gets us, uh, eight. So we can see seven second, eight second nine. Say that got us to right around nine seconds. And then I'm just gonna hand click it until we get 10 okay? And right about there, So all right, loop to keep it clean is not gonna land exactly at the end here unless we add a few more frames. And there we go. I think that does it right there. So me zoom in on my timeline. Come over here. Everyone frame too far. So they pulled her back to to 18 and that'll give us 10 seconds of him jumping back and forth. They pulled my timeline horizontal zoom to see all 10 seconds. My Bring my mouse back to the timeline. Starting point. Let's play that And it's just gonna loop back and forth. There we go. We've got our bouncing happy turkey looping back and forth as long as we need him to. Now, if we were, we could make this a gift at this point, and it will just loop continuously. But I want to export this as a time video for this class project. And so there's a few more things that I want to do to finish this up. Mainly, we're gonna make this into a happy Thanksgiving card that you can personalize and send to someone as a little video file. So let's go ahead and do that 7. Creating our video card: So now that we've got a jumping turkey, we want to turn it into a Thanksgiving card. And I went ahead and just deleted the line of the background and I've moved the whole jumping turkey down just a little bit on on the page and the way I did that Waas Well, I'm just going to show you. So we want to click edit multiple and we want Oh, pull that. So it selects all of the individual drawings, not the not the cycle in the green, but just those okay. And then we grab our selection tool and we just circle. Make sure that we're in cup of compass ing all of the drawings, and at this point, we can scale it down when we can move it around. And so I just move it just a little bit and click. And when I go to de select one of those it gives, it applies the movement to every frame and that applied to the cycle itself to. So that's how you move all of your drawings down on the campus. So now we want to create a background, so I'm going to modify layer, add empty layer and let's just call this background and let's move it below the colors when the colors is our turkey. And so for background, what I'm going to do is it gonna grab my brush tool? I'm gonna grab black and let me hide the turkey for a minute here, and I'm just gonna make a line that is kind of wavy, but kind of straight at the same time. Then I'm going to at another drawing and I'm gonna turn on onion, skin and trace. This is well as best I can, but it doesn't actually don't want it to be a perfect trace. We wanted to have a little bit of difference. I want to do that one more time and again just trace that. Okay, Now we want to have a paint bucket tool and let's pick a color for the sky and, like in turned on in Skin Enough and let's go back toe all three frames and just fill in our sky on offer free frames, and I'll pick a color for the bottom portion and fill all three drawings as well. So now let's go ahead and animate this so the way I want to do that is I want to double up my frames and then I go to the last drawing and I'm gonna add drawing an ad after that gives us a blank drawing here. We're gonna make cycle. You can see we're gonna green cycle started here. It's selecting all three drawings. And as I pull this out, it's going to create animation on the ground. So it looks like grounds. Kind of wavy a little bit. And where does adding this to make another animation effect within the card that we're going to send? So if I change the cycle, I know that my project is 10 seconds long. 10 times 24 240 228 is going to get us right to the end. I did the math beforehand, and if we pull back on our horizontal timeline, zoom it gets is perfectly matched to our turkey jump. So we'll have a 12th clip of the turkey jumping with the background animation. If I hit play, you can just see what the background just a little bit of the way Venous Ah, and we will stop that. And the next thing I want to do is I want to add, um, happy Thanksgiving. And then you can put the name of who you're sending this to. So let's go ahead and make a new layer modify layer at empty layer. And I call this happy things giving mom because that so I'm going to send this to I'm gonna zoom in to my one frame here, and I'm gonna grab my brush tool, and I'm gonna go ahead and just grab, like, a dark blue or something, and I'm gonna bring my brush size up to about 20 and I'm going to just type start writing, make sure to give yourself enough room, and I'm running out of room. So what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna select this text, and I'm gonna shrink it down a little bit. But I'm no shrinking and I wanted to move it before I d selected it. So let's try that about right about there. D select. I'm gonna move the M over a little bit. It's a little tight, and I'm gonna move Thanksgiving. That's a little tight right about there. Okay, I'm gonna go back to brush, and I'm gonna keep writing among and There we go. OK, so to animate this, I actually have another class that shows how to do this in more detail. If we go, you go to skill share. I've got a class called good vibrations Add animation to your video titles and it's only 22 minutes long. So if you've got the time, you can go check that class out and see exactly how we're gonna do this effect in more detail. But right now, we're gonna do it pretty quick. So the next thing I want to do is I want to add drawing at after and I'm gonna turn onions getting back on. And then I'm going to trace everything that I've just done. And we're gonna do this three different times. So I'm gonna go a little bit quick here, and then I'll show you how to animate this, and we're going to do it 1/3 time. So add after and I'm going Teoh change my onion skin. So I just see the previous layer and do it again. Okay, we could turn onion skin off, and now what I want to do is take 81 of these drawings and double them up. So they're on the twos and we're gonna add a drawing after and we're gonna make cycle again . Same thing as we did with the ground. And again, I know that this needs to be to 28 So let's just type that in. And that should get us exactly to the end. And it does. And how will bring the turkey back up? And if I hit play, everything should be and I But at this stage, we can go ahead and let's save our work, and then we're gonna export it. So we're gonna export as a quick time video and I'll say it to the desktop and then we'll go take a look at that file. So I'm gonna hide Rough animator. And here is our video. It's full screen that and hit play. So I hope you enjoyed making your Thanksgiving card and hope whoever you send it to enjoys getting it. So check back in to the next video as we recap what we've just learned 8. Recap: congratulations on completing this skill share class, but we're not done quite yet. Let's recap what we just learned today. We learned how to use basic shapes to help determine our characters form and proportions. We then use those shapes to guide a rough animation drawings. Remember, this is the stage where we determine our animation timing by adding in between drawings. Next, we went over how to trace those rough drawings to create our cleanup drawings. In the following stage of coloring, we see how important clean up drawings ca NBI to the speed were able to color our drawings . Once we had our six drawings colored, we went to the duplicate and flip stage. This is a little tricky and might take some practice to master. Finally, we were able to add a quick animated background and vibrating text to our project. The's final touches turned our animated turkey into a nice, personalized video card that we can now send as a gift. Remember to post your work to the your project section of this class.
