1. 17How To Use Symbols and the Symbolism Tools in Illsutrator: Hi there. My name is David to me ski and I wanted to thank you for choosing this course. I know that there's a lot, of course, is out there. That is why I am so grateful that you chose this one. Welcome to another episode off the every illustrator. To explain Siris in this particular class, you'll learn how to use the symbols and symbolism tools in it. So if you want to know how to create Web design, New I elements and then make them reusable with symbols, how to create whole sets off intricate symbols in a blink of an eye. And how easily modify those sets so you can save a ton of time in a row in the class because it is a concise source off Thora Ellis. Fear knowledge. Great for newbies and everyone who feels that learning a piece of software like illustrator can only be efficient when you get to know the tools it offers. But you don't have to watch all the videos to get real life knowledge. Each lectures is stand alone project, so you can just select until that you want to learn today. Watch that particular video and watch your skill set grow. So he wrote in the class Now, and I'll see you inside 2. How To Use Symbols In Illustrator: the symbolism tools let you create and modify sets off symbol instances, not individual symbols, which can be created out of objects you created before. But I think that in order to fully understand the symbolism tools, it's a good idea to at least briefly talk about the symbols in illustrator. So what's a symbol? It's basically an object that you can reuse in a document. For example, if you create a symbol from a flower, you can then add instances off that assembled multiple times to your artwork without actually adding the complex art multiple times each symbol. Innocents is a linked to the symbol in the symbols panel or to a symbols library, using symbols considered time and greatly reduce file size. And if you're into Web design, you can create whole you. I libraries with just this symbols, which lets you added different two elements quickly in different parts of your design. So just for practice, let's see or a symbol creation process looks like I got three simple You I elements for a contact form design, an email field, text field and a button. I turned each one of them into a group to make things easier for us now in order to create a symbol. Let's make sure we got the symbols panel up and we can check it by going to the window menu symbols to create a symbol. We can either select the object and head onto the symbols panel, where we can click this fly out menu bottom and choose new symbol. Or we can simply dragon object into the symbols panel. Every time you do it, this box will pop up. So let's explore what we have here. First of all, we can name our symbol, so that's what I will do. I'll call it email. I'm not too worried about the movie clip versus graphic option right here as it is just for flash tagging purposes. And for illustrator, it doesn't matter what you choose here. The registration point is something Mawr intended for illustrator and flash cooperation, so you won't bother ourselves with it. And the nine point scaling is for undistorted scaling off certain areas of symbols, and it is something a bit more advanced and a whole topic in itself. For now, let's keep things simple and move on to the align to pixel grid option, which you can turn on if you're creating a Web graphic elements like I am in this case, so I will turn it on. So as soon as I hit OK, I am creating a symbol, and the object used to create it turns into a symbol. Innocents, which can have an individual name set in the control panel right here. Now what's important to understand is that now I can just drag a symbol onto the art award to create a symbol. Instance. I could also just go to the panel menu and choose place symbol instance. But what if I changed my mind and I want the symbols to look differently? How can I added this symbol to edit a symbol? Let's double click on its icon and we get redirected to the isolation mode. And now we can, for instance, change the background of the button and notice that we change the background off all the symbol instances as well. So it's something like a parent child relationship. Water parent does the child mimics. But what if I want to change the background off just one symbol innocence, Not all of them. To do that, you need to break the link between the symbol and the instance, and you can do it in the control panel. Now. This symbol instance, has become a regular object, not a symbol. Instance. Before you move onto the symbolism tools, there's just one handy piece of information I wanted to share with you. The objects you can turn into symbols can be very complex. For instance, weaken, grab all these elements and turn them into one big symbol. And now, every time I want to just add a contact for you, I element I can do to quickly and easily. So this was a brief introduction to symbols. I hope by now to understand what symbols are and what practical benefits they offer in the next video, we'll talk about the symbolism tools, so stay tuned. 3. How To use The Symbolism Tools: the symbolism tools let you create and modify sets off symbol instances. So you create a simple set using the symbols prayer tool. And then you can use the other symbolism tools to change the density, color, location, size, rotation, transparency and style. Off the instances in the set, you can create mixed sets off symbol instances, but using the symbols prayer toe with one symbol and then using it again with another symbol from December. Spritle is the first tool in the symbolism group and has a default short cut off the shift , plus as combination to every symbol. With this tool, we need to select this symbol from the symbols panel. So it's had there in the symbols, pal. We can open up the symbols libraries right here. The symbol sprayer tool is great for adding multiple objects like snowflakes or grass blades. So from the libraries, I will choose nature, and then I will choose a grass symbol. Now what? The symbols prayer till we can collect toe every symbol or click and drag to add multiple instances off. So if you finish creating a set, but you decided that you'd like to add some symbol, Stewart First, you need to select the set and then click to add symbol instances. Of course, you don't have to limit your set to just one kind of symbols. You can choose another symbol and click on a selected symbol set to add those newly chosen symbols. So this time I will choose another symbols library. Maybe the flowers this time felt start adding flour symbols. And if you want to delete some symbol instances, just hold down the altar option key and start clicking or clicking. And Dragon two deleted the symbols. The next symbolism till we got at our disposal is the symbol shifter tool that sits right beneath that symbols prayer. This tool will simply move the symbol around. Remember to have the symbol instance or the symbols that selected, and you can also change the stacking order of the symbols by either shift, clicking on a symbol instance to bring it up in the second order or alter option blast shift clicking only symbol instance. To bring it down the next symbolism tool. The symbols cruncher can either scatter or gather symbol instances, so if you just click with it on a selected symbol, set it will gather this symbol instances, and if we alter option click, we will scatter with symbol instances, pushing them away from each other. Now, in the next video, we will talk about the next symbolism told, so stay tuned. 4. How To Use The Symbolsim Tool Continued: the next symbolism tool is the symbol size Ertl, which could make the symbols as the name suggests, bigger or smaller by default. If we just click and drag, we will make the symbols bigger. But holding down the altar option key while clicking and dragon will make the symbol smaller. Also, remember that only the symbols selected in the symbols panel will get affected. And this goes toe all the symbolism. Metals except, of course, for the symbols prayer. So, for instance, with the symbol spinner tool we can rotate on lee. The symbol instances we select not all the symbols within the whole set and if you want to change the color of a symbol used. This symbol, Stainer, to no stating a symbol instance, changes the huge toward the tent color while preserving the original luminosity and depends on the filled color you have currently selected. The result in color is a mixture off the luminosity off the original color, which is the color of the symbol and the hue of the color selected as the film. Now, the more you click on a symbol innocence with Symbolist, Stainer told the more intense If the color is going to get, and the more you click on it oil holding down the altar option key, the more off the original color will show through notice, though, that this technique won't add colors to black or white objects, as there is no luminosity value in them. With the symbols screener tool, we can increase or decrease the amount of transparency, and we can do it by clicking or clicking and dragon to decrease the transparency or by clicking or all clicking and dragging to increase transparency. The last symbolism tool is called the symbol Styler. With this silicon, add a graphic styles to symbol instances. First, you need to select the graphic style from the graphic Styles panel and then just click on a symbol instance to apply the graphic style or all options, click to decrease the amount of this style. Added notice, though, that this technique can be a bit unpredictable and it's significantly slows down your computer, so you might want to go easy on applying graphic styles to symbol instances in a set. So there you go. These are the symbolism tools in its very first, quite a handful of them, but learning them can prove to be very helpful when you want to create lots and lots off small graphic elements and you want to save time doing it. So as always, have a nice design, and I will see you in the next class.
