1. 15How To Use The Blend Tool In Illustrator Pomo Video: Hi there. My name is David. Too risky, and I wanted to thank you for choosing this course. I know that there's a lot, of course, is out there. That is why I am so grateful that you chose this one. Welcome to another episode of the every illustrator to explain Siris in this particular class, you'll learn how to use the blend to in illusory. So if you want to know how to mix colors together, using the blend to how to create those fantasy color transitions and how to create the ever so popular long shadow of fact enrolled in the class because it is a concise source off Thora Ellis Fear knowledge. So he wrote in the class Now, and I'll see you inside 2. 1How To Use the Blend Tool: In the next few videos, we will talk about using the blend tool that the blend tool creates these series of objects blandon between the color and the shape of multiple objects. So let's see how this tool works in practice. On the blend Tool sits right here in the tools Pau and has a default short cut off the letter double view. Blending is most often used to blend colors of shapes and shapes themselves. So if you've seen my flat design icons classes, you are already familiar with the technique that uses blending to create their long shadow effect. Notice, though, that to blend in is not the same as blending options we can set in the transparency panel. These are completely different things. I got two stars right here that I want to use to demonstrate how the blend tool and the blended works and the final effect is going to lose something like a three D starburst and can be achieved very, very easily. So the blend tool selected I will click on one object and then on the other to create the smooth transition, and that is that we will get to slightly different results when we blend objects by click inside of them, and we will get two different results when we click on specific anchor points of those objects by default, Illustrator tries to create a smooth color transition by adding the number of shapes between blended objects. When we double click on the tools icon in the Tools panel, we can see the smooth color Sata's default. However, if we change it to specified steps, we will see how many instances of the objects illustrator used to create the bland. Now, in many cases, the amount of steps illustrators going toe ad will be too big. Very often we can achieve the same result with a much, much lower number of steps. And this is important because the bigger the number of steps, the more difficult it will be for you computer to render. So if you're working with some complicated plants, decreasing the number of steps might make your machine work faster and not lag that much. And the last blending option is the specified distance one, and it will save you a lot of times when you will be wondering, why isn't it working properly? So let me show you what I mean. So I got to objects here that have exactly the same appearance. The filled color is the same. Capacity is the same. Everything is completely identical. So let's say that you want to blend between these two. You want to create a unique color transition that would basically creating new object. So let's try to do that. So notice that when I clicked on the first object and then on the 2nd 1 illustrator is given us on Lee one shape in between. So what's wrong? Well, nothing, really. It's just the way illustrator interprets what you're trying to do here or other misinterprets. It basically doesn't understand the purpose of blending two identical objects because remember that by default it wants to create a smooth color transition. So when you want to blend objects with the same appearance used to specified steps or even better, the specified distance option and the smaller the value here, the smaller the gap between the steps of the bland. Usually one pixel will suffice, but you can go down as low as 1/10 of a pixel. Of course, blending doesn't have to happen between just two objects. We can have more than two and create Bland's just like we did before, between objects and between ankle points. Now, before we move on to the next video, there's just one thing worth mentioning here. If you want, you can bland objects not just by using the blend tool, but also may go into the object menu and then blend, which has a handy short cut off alter or option plus command control plus B. There are other options here as well, but we will talk about them in the next video. 3. 2How To Edit the Blends: Every time you create a blend, ill zero needs to put a line between objects in relation to which the blend is being applied. So that line is called a spine, and we can see it best when we go to the outline mode. We can also see it and targeted easily in the Layers panel. What's great about it is that even though it kind of like sits in the bland weaken, still manipulated just like any other path in illustrator. But we have to do it with a direct selection tool, so I will make sure that it is active by pressing the A key on my keyboard. We're gonna grab an anchor point I want and move it around. I can even converted to smooth or to corner, and each change makes the blend re calculate itself on the fly. But what if we decide that we need a completely different flow off the bland? What if you wanted to band or we've, for instance, so if that's the case, we can always replace the existing spine with a different one. Let's quickly created curve here, so I'll create a simple line. Add an anchor point so we're in the middle of it and convert it with their convert anchor points still to create a curve. Now I will make sure that both the bland and the newly created line are selected. I'll go to the object bland menu and choose replace spine. Now the newly created line gets mixed in with the bland, which is flowing along the curved line. Now, as long as you don't expand the bland, you can freely change it's appearance, For instance, you can move blended objects around and notice that I am using the direct selection tool to target the parts of the bland. You could move their ankle points, as we've already seen, and you can also go back to the blend options and Jews reverse spine to essentially reflect the bland. In this case, you can also grab a whole object and change its color to make the whole bland look differently. But when you're using the blend option to add instances of certain objects, instead of creating a smooth color transition, you can reorient their positioning. So let me show you what I mean by that. I got some leaves blended here. You can notice that I just added copies of the leaves between the two initial ones. When you double click on the blends, likening the tools panel, you'll be able to change the orientation off the bland. And you can choose between a line to page, which orients the blend perpendicular to the X axis of the page and aligned towpath, which orients the blend perpendicular to the path, which is the spine. So this is how you can add it. The blends. In the next video, we will take a look at creating that long shadow effect I mentioned earlier, so stay tuned. 4. 3How To Create the Long Shadow Effect with the Blend Tool: as I mentioned before, creating a long shadow effect is best achieved when you're using the specified a distance option. You don't have to worry about the right amount of steps to make the bland smooth. All you gotta do is toe enter one pixel for the distance value, and that will make the bland, super smooth. I got this simple text here that is put against a colored background. What I want to do is to create a long shadow effect which will give the tax day vintage comic book effect before we start creating the long shadow of factors. Of course, one thing we need to do we need to have the objects we want to blend together, Right. So I'm gonna just grab this. Will this tax David's long shadow that I'm simply going to copy it and then I'm going to baste it in back. Of course, we could use the control or command plus B shortcut as well. So what I have right now is I have two copies off the same text, and what I'm gonna do right now is I'm going to simply lock this top taxed, so I'm simply going to go to the object menu. Then look and then selection. Now, what I'm gonna do is ever going to grab the underlying text, and I'm going to clone it down here. So I'm moving it and holding down the altar or option if you're on a Mac somewhere here. Now, what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna grab both these pieces of text and I'm gonna make them. Maybe not necessarily black, but something really dark. Maybe this dark, dark, gray color just like so. So we have one piece off very dark color. Very, very dark, dark gray color right here. Dark text and another one here. So with both these guys selected, I'm going to go to the object menu. Then I'm gonna go to blend, and I'm gonna hit make, and you can see illustrator has created their long shadow effect for us. Now, if you want to make it even even smoother, you could always just go to the bland options and changed this specified distance value to something lower. Just remember that the lower the value, the more intense is going to get on your on your system. So if you have a better computer, you can go into well, you could create or set the lower values here, but if not to, you can maybe want to stick with some other some higher values, like one pixel, for instance. So I'm just going to click. OK, it was great about this technique. And of course, it sometimes needs some time to render what's great about about the sickening, that it's still a life effect. So if I want to change it, I can maybe change the text to something like, I don't know, maybe just a long shadow and notice that it will take some time to recalculate. But it's still a live effect, So if I want, I can still change the tax. And of course, I can still change the text up here if I want to, and it's it's simply a live fund. But there's a few things we can do with this plan. Of course, we can change its its color if you want to, so we can just create well at a new film. Maybe, like maybe this color, let's see what it looks like and we can maybe changing, backed if the color it wells just like so and Of course, we can always say change its opacity if you want to or weaken changes, blending mode so we can maybe turn its opacity down to 46% and notice that were affecting the whole blend right here. Or we could simply change her on the blending mode to maybe soft light and then maybe just bring back the opacity up, just like so. Of course you can play around with it a whole afternoon. You can change. The opacity can change the blending modes. Usually, what I usually do is I just leave the blending mode to normal and maybe turned the opacity , but down to something like 75% maybe something like that. And we could always just grab one piece off our bland so we can just Gramp with a direct selection toe. This bottom attacks to this bottom David's long shadow tax, and we can manipulate it separately so we can maybe change its opacity and bring it down all the way to zero to get this kind of a this kind of in effect if you want to. So once you are happy with their with their lump shadow effect, you can simply grab the blend. Just go to the object menu, bland and then just hit expand. So right now, our bland has been expanded into a simple well, not that simple cause we got. We get a lot, a lot, a lot of anchor points right here, but instead we live effect instead of a blend. It's now a simple path. So there you go. This is how you can use the blend tool and the blend options inside. It's fair. I encourage you to test these options yourself, because blending is one of the nicest effects to work with inside elsewhere. So I'll see you in the next glass of the Siri's. 5. Class project: So for the class project, I'd like you to follow the steps you saw me taking when I was creating the long shadow effect. I want you to type in your name, your pets, name your favorite word, your favorite dish, your favorite travel destination and then just create a long shadow effect out of it. So just copy the text twice, and the movement beneath on the top taxed and then just used the blending in the blending options to create the long shadow effect. And after you are done, it would be great if you just saved it as a J pic fire or a PNG so we could go to the safer Web command just like so and then just entered the size you want. In my case, it's 99 60 by 5 40 it's usually is okay for the class Project engine, then just hit, save and enter it and entered uploaded in the class action project. So I hope you like the class.
