1. Graphic Design for Lunch 10 Layer Tips in 10 Minutes Introduction: Hello, I'm Helen Bradley. Welcome to this episode of graphic design for lunch, 10 Adobe Illustrator layer tips in 10 minutes or less. Today we're looking at layers in Illustrator, things like moving objects around layers. What coloring layer is all about, understanding appearances and layers, finding things in layers, creating templates, creating clipping masks and a whole lot more. Now as you're watching these videos, you will see a prompt to recommend this class to others. Please, if you're enjoying the class, do two things for me. Firstly, answer yes to recommend it to others, and secondly, write just a few words about why you're enjoying the class. These recommendations help other students to say that this is a class that they too might enjoy. If you'd like to leave a comment or a question for me, please do so. I read and respond to all of your comments and questions, and I look at and respond to all of your class projects. So if you're ready now let's get started with our 10 layer tips in 10 minutes. 2. Before We Begin: Before we get into the tips in this Illustrator class, there are a few things that I'm assuming you already know. One of them is that you already know that there is a Layers Palette in Illustrator and you can view it by clicking here on this icon or choose we know layers. You can also press function key F7 to view the Layers Palette. I'm also assuming that you understand that all shapes and objects in Illustrator must be inside a layer. You just can't have objects free-floating. Everything is at the very least inside layer one. In this particular document which we're going to use throughout this class where it's appropriate, I have two layers. I have a layer up the top here which contains all the gray scale objects and I have a second layer underneath it which contains these colored objects. The order of things in the layers palette reflects this stacking order in the document. This text objects shapes here, which is here in the last palette is behind absolutely everything. Then it has this red rectangle on top and then the green circle and so on. So you can read a document from bottom to top or from top to bottom via the Layers Palette. In addition, you can turn the visibility of an object on or off by clicking it's eyeball icon here. Here, we're turning this star on and off. You can select an object inside the document by clicking on this little button here, it's actually called a Meatball Icon. Click on an object's meatball icon and you can select that object within the document. Now if you want to set up your Layers Palette so you can see nice big objects like I've got shown here, click the fly-out menu and choose Panel Options, select Other. In this case, I'm working on a fairly large monitor, so I've set mine to 60 pixels. So that's giving me a nice big preview of the objects inside the layers in Illustrator.
