By now you’ve heard how important it is to promote your Skillshare class, but we want to make sure you know the best way to do so. There are a few built-in marketing tools that make it easier for you to share your class, but there’s one in particular that has the most bang for the buck (literally): your referral link.
Every class has its own referral link. You can find your referral link in the Promote section of your class creator, in the pop-up box that appears when you click the email button under your video lessons, and on the left-hand side bar when you view your class (don’t worry if the links look slightly different, they all work in the same way). This link is some sort of Skillshare magic. With it, you can have your friends, family, and followers sign up for a free month of Premium Membership for access to your class (and all classes on Skillshare), and you earn an extra $10 for each person you refer. This link is available to you as soon as you publish your class. In fact, you can copy and paste your link right now to start earning more revenue.
You might be wondering how and why this all works, so we’re going to break it down.
Skillshare is a thriving community of millions of students — some of these students discovered Skillshare on their own and others were recommended by their friends, some of whom are teachers like you. We implemented the class referral link to help facilitate this organic interaction. We want to make it easier and more rewarding to share Skillshare with your own community as a teacher.
The class referral link benefits both you and those you refer. As a teacher, it’s important to build your student following. Inviting your existing community of family, friends, newsletter readers, Instagram followers, and whoever else appreciates your work is the best way to see success on Skillshare. It’s easier to tap into the community that already supports you and ask them to watch your class using your referral link. Each person that signs up with your link and watches your class will become one of your student followers and will earn you a $10 referral bonus.
Every new student who signs up for Skillshare Premium Membership with your referral link will have access to your class and all of Skillshare’s classes for free for two months. That does mean they will need to enter their credit card when they sign up for an account, but there is virtually zero risk. Students can cancel their Premium Membership at any time. Even if a student decides to cancel before the end of the month, you’ll still get your $10 referral bonus.
Your referral link really is the best way to promote your Skillshare class. Aside from sharing an incredible deal with your community, think of the potential revenue you can earn. Say, for example, you have 500 followers on Instagram. Even if only 5% of your followers signed up with your referral link, you’d also earn an extra $250! And that’s revenue in addition to your monthly royalty earnings.
Of course, there are other tools you can use to promote your class, including a link called the free access link. This link allows someone to sign up for Skillshare without a credit card, for free. This link does not give you a referral bonus, and students that sign up with your free access link will only be able to take your class. This link is helpful for when you want to share your class out of goodwill or if you want to host a contest or work with a major blog or brand that agrees to promote your class. That said, we still think it’s best to try using your referral link first and if you find there is pushback from your community, you can always offer the free access link later.
Above all, we can’t stress enough how important it is to share your class with your community. We think the best way to do so is through your referral link, as it offers the most benefits to you and your students. There are a ton of ways to promote your class and encourage folks to use your referral link. So long as you are spreading the word about your class and inspiring your own community to signup, you not only do yourself a favor but you also help keep Skillshare the flourishing community of engaged learners that it is!
