This year, the holidays are different for many of us as we won’t be able to spend time with friends or family like we’re used to.  As children, many of us made gifts for those we love, but as adults, many of us dropped that tradition.  This year is a great time to pick the tradition of making gifts back up, not only to surprise friends and families with a custom touching gift but also to give you a creative outlet that will lead to joy for those you love.

Gift Idea #1 – A Music Playlist

When a memorable song plays, you can find yourself reminiscing about exactly where you were, who you were with, and what you were doing.  And what better way to ignite memories of joy, laughter, and connectedness with your recipient than to create a playlist of both of your favorite songs!?  Perhaps it’s a playlist of your favorite band or group, or maybe it’s a playlist of songs that played at a concert you went to together.  Either way this gift is sure to invoke joy, laughter, and maybe even some dancing.

Gift Idea #2 – Handwritten Note

In a world that’s become so technological, most of us haven’t received a handwritten note in some time.  Because it’s so rare, its value has gone up and it’s a really special gift that your recipient will most likely hold on to for some time.  And if you’re not the poetic type and can’t think of anything to write, perhaps write to them about what you wish you could be doing with the recipient and what you look forward to when you’re together again.  Whether you share how much you care about the recipient or share what you look forward to, it’s sure to be a surprise that your recipient will really enjoy.

Gift Idea #3 – Plant Cutting

If you happen to have a green thumb, which a lot of us have tried out this year while spending more time at home, and have a plant or two in your home, gifting one of your plant cuttings is an awesome gift!  Plant cuttings can survive a few days in the mail if wrapped in wet paper towels and placed in a bag!  And in this Skillshare Staff Pick: Gardening 101 you can learn about propagation and how to easily cut a trimming off of a plant that will allow your gift recipient to grow their own plant!  A gift that keeps on giving.

The magic of gift giving is that it reminds those we love that we pay attention to what they enjoy, that we’re thinking about them, and that we want to let them know they matter to us.  When we use our creativity to bring joy through our gift giving, we give ourselves an outlet to be innovative but we also get to give our loved ones something one of a kind and special that they weren’t expecting.
