Psychology for a Better World: Heal Your Emotions

We live in a crazy world today! We build huge skyscrapers and we send people to the moon, but we don’t know how to resolve our differences, or how to work together to create a better world.

We have big screen TVs, fancy computers and all the latest technology, but we don’t know how to be healthy and happy. We have email, Facebook, I-phones and Twitter, but we don’t know how to have deep friendships or how to connect heart-to-heart. We study trigonometry and ancient history in high school, but we don’t learn the psychological skills for having healthy marriages or healthy, loving families.

Albert Einstein was totally correct when he said “It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity.”

I’m Kari Joys. I’m a psychotherapist, an author and an educator. I’m here today because I have a dream for a more loving, supportive and harmonious humanity. Like Martin Luther King, JR, I believe in my heart that with a little work and effort, our world could be much better than it is today.

I’d like to live in a world where people feel less harried and stressed but more valued and cared about. I’d like a world where there is less anxiety and depression, but more love and support.

I’d like to live in a world where there is less family conflict and divorce, but more joy and laughter and more happy family get-togethers. I’d love a world where there is less alcoholism or addiction to drugs but more exercise and healthy food.

I’d love a world where there are less negativity and ugliness, but more music and laughter and dancing in the streets. I’d like to live in a world where there is less hopelessness and unemployment but more creativity, motivation and personal responsibility.

I’d like a world where there is a decrease in violence and crime, and less need for new jails, but more safety and protection for our children. I’d love a world where there is less focus on selfishness and materialism, but more education about what it takes to be healthy and happy.

So do you think I’m describing something that’s completely impossible? I understand!

What you probably didn’t notice is that everything I’ve mentioned that needs work and change in our world relates in some way to the psychology of our emotional health. What I know from my work as a psychotherapist is that when people are able to heal their emotional issues, they naturally become healthier and happier in every way.

People who heal their emotional issues learn healthy ways of expressing their feelings, rather than acting them with negative behaviors. They realize that healing your emotions is no longer something to be ashamed of; but rather something to esteem and admire. They learn to change their negative thoughts, beliefs and expectations because they know there really is a light at the end of the tunnel.

People who heal their emotional issues transform their marriages and families by communicating in loving, supportive ways with each other. They become more motivated and more interested in developing their natural talents and working together to create a better world.

People who deal with their emotional issues are happier, healthier, more productive citizens. Overcoming their own emotional wounds makes them more willing to be kind and supportive of others who may still be struggling.

Let me tell you a little bit about my history. I was a hippie in the 1970s. In those days we fought openly for love and peace. We organized rallies and marches against war and violence and we started natural food stores and community organizations.

We experimented with drugs and we meditated on mountain tops to achieve altered states of consciousness. We laughed a lot and we danced in the streets, creating happy community events everywhere we went.

But when we graduated from college, it all changed. We had to find jobs and support ourselves financially in that same crazy world we had just been protesting about. It was a challenging time in our lives!

We found jobs in many different professions. Some of us gave up and joined the establishment, while others went incognito, but continued to work for a better world. For some of us it took many years before we could actually make a difference in the profession we had chosen, and often the difference we made was not as big or as dramatic as we had hoped.

Yet, in the end, our dreams were not lost. Even though it’s taken many years to accomplish our goals, some of us never stopped our efforts to change the world for the better.

So, still today, I have that dream for love and peace. My dream today involves creating more opportunity for emotional health in our world.

What I’ve learned over the years is that every challenging issue in our culture in some way comes back to the psychology of our emotional health. Whether it is our lack of self-esteem, our broken marriages, our estranged families, our materialism, or our lack of lack of focus on what really matters, it all comes down to our emotional health.

I believe that if we want to change the world, it has to start by each of us facing our emotional issues and resolving them, so that we can love ourselves, and love each other, and work together to create a better world!

In closing, I’d like to quote the words from John Lennon’s beautiful song “Imagine.” “You may say that I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one, I hope someday you’ll join us, and the world will live as one!”
