GOALS
  1. Understand how websites fundamentally work by briefly exploring the technologies behind them.
  2. Understand the relationship between HTML, CSS, and Javascript in a website.
  3. Build a website from scratch!
  4. Discover resources for continued learning.
DESCRIPTION

It's no secret that the internet is full of some good (but mostly bad) information, tutorials, and forums exploring nearly every last corner of web development and design. You, however, are not interested in every last corner of web development and design. You simply want to learn a solid, practical, and fundamental basis for building websites. You don't know Java from Javascript. You are that person at dinner who pulls out your phone to check your email yet again because your friends are talking in code… again.

Fear not, young padawan*, for I will teach you the way of the web developer. The internets are more friendly than you think, and soon you'll be speaking HTML, CSS, and Javascript with your eyes closed… and you will understand just how bad those jokes that your friends keep telling are. By the end of the course you will have a functional website comprised of HTML, CSS, and Javascript. No experience is necessary (in fact, no experience is preferred!), and you’ll be up and running in no time!

* Jedi mind tricks not included

PREPARATION

Please bring a laptop equipped with an installation of MAMP [Mac] or WAMP [Windows] (The free version is what you want. No need for any addons or anything). Follow the installation instructions and make sure that it is working properly. This will allow you to build websites directly on your computer during class. Though each class builds on the previous classes, you are welcome to sign up for any subset of the classes that you are interested in.

DISCLAIMER

The class on April 26, 2012 is at the Venture Cafe located at the Cambridge Innovation Center, One Broadway, 4th Floor. Visitors must comply with Venture Cafe attendance policies.

    GOALS
    1. Understand how websites fundamentally work by briefly exploring the technologies behind them.
    2. Understand the relationship between HTML and CSS in a website.
    3. Build a basic HTML/CSS website from scratch!
    DESCRIPTION

This class is roughly 25% Lecture, 75% Workshop, and 100% Q&A! I will give a whirlwind survey of how websites work on a fundamental level, from topics such as the LAMP stack all the way to web design and everything in-between (well, obviously not everything!). We will then dive into building your own custom HTML/CSS website! My classes are very hands-on, so get ready to get your hands dirty!

    GOALS
    1. Understand the relationship between HTML, CSS, and Javascript in a website.
    2. Understand the basics of how jQuery works as a replacement* for Javascript.
    3. Add Javascript functionality to a HTML/CSS website.

    * jQuery is technically an abstraction of Javascript, allowing easier implementation. Consequently they are cross-compatible, and more robust applications will often use both for different things since jQuery is only at-best as fast as Javascript. It's like having a translator. It's easier than learning the language, but it's at-best as literal as the original message.

    DESCRIPTION

Ever wonder how Facebook shows you new posts without refreshing the whole page? Or how Grooveshark can keep playing a song while still going to a different URL? Javascript is a crucial web technology that allows all sorts of dynamic website functionality, and this class aims to introduce you to it!

This class is roughly 25% Lecture, 75% Workshop, and 100% Q&A! The class starts with an introduction to dynamic functionality on websites and the relationship between Javascript code and other static web components like the HTML and CSS markup. We then learn how to use a specific abstraction of Javascript, jQuery, to implement Javascript easily and quickly. Lastly, we incorporate some cool dynamic functionality into our own website! My classes are very hands-on, so get ready to get your hands dirty!
