By the end of class, you'll understand the basic difference between spreadsheets, SQL, and NoSQL database management systems (buzzwords include: Excel, CSV, MySQL, Postgres, MongoDB, CouchDB, and more). You'll have dabbled in set theory, and you'll know enough code to read data from any SQL database.

Vanessa Hurst has been writing SQL for 9 years and dreaming in spreadsheets for decades.
She is the founder of CodeMontage, where coders go to improve their skills while improving the world. She also co-founded of Girl Develop It, an organization dedicated to improving software development by providing low-cost, supportive learning environments. Vanessa previously led the data and analytics efforts at Paperless Post, a customizable online invitation startup that redefines the tradition of stationery. Before entering the startup world, Vanessa worked in business intelligence at The Ladders and financial data at Capital IQ.
Vanessa founded and organizes Developers for Good, a meetup of technologists who want to use their skills to further social missions. She also serves as a technical advisor to a number of non-profits and startups, including Ohours. Vanessa holds a B.S. in Computer Science with a minor in Systems & Information Engineering from the University of Virginia.
