Envy Your Ruby on Rails Environment: A Development Setup Workshop

, A School for Passionate People

Every programmer hates debugging setup and environment issues. But setting up a stable Ruby and Rails environment locally requires years of experience with the language, framework, and dependencies. In this 2 hour workshop (though you are free to leave the second that your environment works and you are comfortable developing), I will go through the proper steps for setting up the perfect Ruby on Rails environment with all the bells and whistles. Software and Libraries covered include:

  • Ruby Versions Manager (RVM)
  • ruby-1.8.7-p302
  • ruby-1.9.2-p136
  • RubyGems 1.7.2
  • Rails 3.0.9
  • Rails 2.3.11
  • pow and powder
  • Homebrew
  • mysql 5.1.49
  • MongoDB 1.8.1
  • freeimage, imagemagick, rmagick, image_science (which basically cover all the image processing libs
  • memcached (gem and server
  • git
  • XCode 3.2.1 (maybe 4)
  • A bunch of gems including the most popular ones listed on ruby toolbox

I'll also be helping you configure some fancy shmancy .dotfiles like .irbrc and .bash_profile to make sure your prompts and console are good looking and efficient.

If after the end of the workshop you are not satisfied with your development environment, you can have a refund (minus skillshare/paypal fees).

If there is enough demand for linux (Ubuntu) or Windows (7 / Vista), I can probably make that happen too.

The price for this class is going to be $75-$100 per setup.
